Biomimetic slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have emerged as a promising solution to solve the limitations of superhydrophobic surfaces, such as inadequate durability in corrosion protection and a propensity for frosting. However, the challenge of ensuring strong, lasting adhesion on diverse materials to enhance the durability of the lubricant layer remains. The research addresses this by leveraging amyloid phase-transitioned lysozyme (PTL) as an adhesive interlayer, conferring stable attachment of SLIPS across a variety of substrates, including metals, inorganics, and polymers. The silica-textured interface robustly secures the lubricant with a notably low sliding angle of 1.15°. PTL-mediated adhesion fortifies the silicone oil attachment to the substrate, ensuring the retention of its repellent efficacy amidst mechanical stressors like ultrasonication, water scrubbing, and centrifugation. The integration of robust adhesion, cross-substrate compatibility, and durability under stress affords the PTL-modified SLIPS exceptional anti-fouling, anti-icing, and anti-corrosion properties, marking it as a leading solution for advanced protective applications.

In recent years, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have emerged as a potential alternative to superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) due to their exceptional anti-icing properties. However, the current challenge lies in the significant lubricant consumption of SLIPSs, which poses a major obstacle to coating durability. In this study, we developed a durable anti-icing coating with stability (DASS), which combines SHSs and SLIPSs. By incorporating high adsorption particles and low cross-linking density rubber into the oil storage layer, the coating achieves an increased oil storage capacity while effectively inhibiting lubricant loss. Additionally, a superhydrophobic layer is introduced on the surface to ensure surface lubrication and prevent lubricant depletion. The three-layer structure enables the coating to maintain a low τ ice (<20kPa) during 30 icing/deicing cycles, showcasing superior de-icing durability compared to conventional anti-icing coatings. Interestingly, the original anti-icing properties of the coating can be restored through external oil replenishment. Furthermore, this coating exhibits excellent resistance against fouling, mechanical stress, chemical exposure, temperature variations, and weathering effects, making it highly suitable for practical applications in anti-icing coatings.

Inspired by Nepenthes pitcher plants, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have attracted wide attention and exhibited remarkable liquid repellency, droplet motion control and antifouling properties. However, lubricant-impregnated surfaces have poor durability, leading to loss of control of the movements of droplets during applications. Herein, WO 3 -based slippery coatings with high stability were prepared by the spray method and photocatalytic reaction. Notably, on the basis of the hierarchical structures, the strong intermolecular forces between the polydimethylsiloxane brush and silicone oil led to the formation of a stable lubricant layer on the WO 3 -based slippery coating, which can suppress lubricant loss during water collection. After a series of stability tests, such as high-speed centrifugation, long-term storage, acidic solution and multiple heating/cooling cycles, the biomimetic slippery surface still displays excellent surface-slippery stability. Furthermore, the slippery surface exhibits superior water mist capture, water droplet expansion and harvested water removal abilities, leading to good water collection performance. The silicone oil content in the collected water was 28 mg/L, demonstrating that the loss of oil was lower during the water collection process. Even under harsh environments, including multiple heating/cooling cycles, long-term storage and high shear force, lubricant-impregnated coatings can also maintain good water collection efficiency. Therefore, these slippery coatings are promising for widespread application.

Endoscopes, a minimally invasive medical tool, are susceptible to impaired visibility due to the adhesion of biological fluids. However, traditional self-cleaning coatings face limitations in terms of transparency and sustainability, making it difficult to apply them to lenses. Inspired by the phospholipid layer of the eye, a reversible lubricating layer (RL-layer) with low-adhesion and high-transparency properties is reported. Even coagulated blood can be easily removed due to the low surface tension and easy swing of the brushes. In addition, the silicon–oxygen bonds can be cleaved by fluoride ions, thereby achieving reversible modification and showing potential in sustainable usage. To prove the concept, biomimetic endoscopic lenses are employed in vivo experiments. The results indicate that it consistently maintains a clear vision in narrow spaces containing mucus and exhibits excellent biocompatibility. The reversible lubricating layer provides valuable reference significance for self-cleaning coatings in other fields.

In cold environments, natural phenomena like icing, frost, and fog can significantly impede the functionality of optical windows. Consequently, there is a growing demand for optical windows that demonstrate anti-fogging and de-icing characteristics while maintaining flexibility and transparency with high optical clarity. The development of cost-effective and straightforward anti-fogging and de-icing elements encounters various challenges. The remarkable visual acuity of polar bear eyes in challenging weather conditions can be attributed to a tear film that covers the cornea and the thermoregulatory characteristics of their eyeballs. Inspired by the anti-fogging and anti-icing properties of polar bear eyes, a new flexible, transparent surface with heating capabilities has been developed. To address the limitations of conventional slippery surfaces that solely offer anti-fouling properties, a flexible internal heating unit is integrated into the slippery surface through a layered nesting technique to emulate the homothermal features of polar bear eyeballs. The slippery property of the PDMS surface can be attributed to a gel layer containing an auto-secretory lubricant. To preserve its optical properties, a new processing method that combines liquid metal microfluidics and femtosecond laser processing is employed. This technique can create narrow channels with a high length-to-diameter ratio, thereby reducing the impact on the transmission rate. The sample demonstrates self-cleaning, resistance to dust and pollution, and efficient electrical heating properties. Testing on fogging and freezing validates the practicality and effectiveness of these substances for applications in anti-fogging and de-icing.

Lyocell fibers are currently claimed as green fibers with good application prospects, but the major problem of fibrillation restricts further promotion and application. In this study, based on the theory of hydration lubrication at the solid/liquid interface, hexamethylene-diisocyanate trimer (HDIt), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and butanone oxime (MEKO) were used to synthesize a reactive hydrophilic triblock polyurethane (RHT-PU). RHT-PU could construct a water lubrication layer on the lyocell fiber surface via H-bonding between polyoxyethylene ether and water molecules, reducing the coefficient of friction (CoF) of the fiber interface in the water. It was found that PEG molecular weight and grafting density had significant effects on the CoF of modified fabrics, with CoFs decreased with increased PEG molecular weight and grafting density. In water, the CoFs of fabrics modified by RHT-PU were reduced from 0.45 to 0.32 and maintained lower CoFs at higher temperature and higher normal loads. After mechanical friction and household washing tests, the surface abrasion of modified fabrics were significantly improved and color fading grade of fabrics raised from 3 grade to 4–5 grade. Construction of water-lubricated interfaces effectively reduced fibrillation.

The slippery liquid infused porous surface (SLIPS) with excellent anti-corrosion properties have been widely reported in recent years. Unfortunately, most of the previously reported SLIPS struggles to provide long-term effective corrosion protection for magnesium (Mg) alloys owing to the lack of effective mesoporous structure self-repairing capability. Herein, a SLIPS with a self-repair microstructure and slippery attributes was fabricated, which consisted of a MnOOH layer and a superhydrophobic active carbon/hydroxyl-modified hexagonal boron nitride (AC/BNO) coating. The abundant mesoporous structure of the AC favors the formation of a dense lubricant layer on the SLIPS. The addition of BNO as a two-dimensional filler creates a “labyrinth effect” within SLIPS, which enhances its overall corrosion resistance. In addition, MnOOH offers a self-repair microstructure and slippery attribute ability for SLIPS. Once the SLIPS is damaged, the damaged area undergoes structural and slippery attributes repair through the spontaneous reaction of MnOOH with Mg 2+ and OH − to form Mn-Mg layered double hydroxides (LDH) with mesoporous structure for restoration. Moreover, the SLIPS not only exhibited excellent mechanical stability and anti-contamination performance, but electrochemical experiments also indicated that the corrosion protection efficiency of both the original and self-repaired SLIPS was greater than 99 %, demonstrating excellent corrosion resistance. Therefore, compared with traditional SLIPS, this study not only utilizes AC as storage container to avoid the complex mesoporous structure preparation process but also provides new insights for the sustainable development of SLIPS by regenerating new mesoporous structures and restoring the slippery attributes.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) with excellent anticorrosion and scale inhibition properties has attracted extensive attention, but the unstable lubricant layer significantly limit its long-term application. Herein, a robust slippery polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/aluminum dihydrogen phosphate (ADP)/carboxylated carbon nanotube (C-CNTs)/microcapsules (MCs) composite coating was constructed by combining hierarchical micro-/nanopores, chemical anchoring and microcapsules pre-storage. The homogeneous micro-/nanopores were formed owing to the phase separation of PVDF and ADP, benefiting for the storage of lubricants. The isocyanate N3390 was sprayed as binder on the substrate to enhance the interfacial bonding strength of the composite coating through the reaction of -NCO with the -OH of ADP and Al substrate, -COOH of C-CNTs. Moreover, the microcapsules containing hydroxyfluorosilicone oil in PU@SiO 2 shell were synthesized via Pickering emulsion polymerization to repair the damaged lubricant layer and resist mechanical friction. Simultaneously, the prepared coating with oil film loss of 3.47 wt% can maintain its slippery performance after 6000 rpm high shear rotation, which can be ascribed to the covalent bonds generated by the reaction among the -OH groups of the hydroxyfluorosilicone oil, ADP and the -COOH of C-CNTs, resulting in the anchoring of oil molecules. This outstanding stability of lubricant layer property results in excellent anti-scaling property with the minimal calcium content (1.51 wt%) and corrosion resistance with a corrosion velocity of 2.33 × 10 −5 mm/year. Therefore, the exceptional stability of this slippery composite coating offers new application possibilities in corrosion protection, marine transportation and other fields.

Intelligent manipulation of fluid has aroused broad interest in the applications of freshwater harvesting, microfluidics, and energy. Despite much progress in this field, significant challenges persist in precisely controlling droplets intelligent driving and selection. Herein, inspired by shorebird beak and Nepenthes’ leaf edge, an electric-field-adaptive wrinkled surface (EFAWS) is developed for droplet driving and screening. Wrinkle geometry and lubricant thickness can dynamically regulate through electric field, enabling control trajectory and velocity by programming radial wrinkles and lubricant thickness, EFAWS achieves directional droplet transport and droplet volume-selective sorting. Theoretical models reveal relationships between surface deformation and wetting dynamics, demonstrating size-dependent directional responses governed by lubricant thickness. Volume-specific transport pathways emerge from the capillary forces generated by wrinkles, allowing intelligent screening of microdroplets. EFAWS establishes structure-field-property correlations for designing smart interfaces, with potential applications in microreactors, water harvesting and intelligent fluidic devices with multi-parameter control capabilities.

Poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC), as a highly hydrophilic as well as biocompatible material, has been widely used in biomedical applications. In this study, the friction reduction and wear resistance of HXLPE were improved by grafting PMPC on its surface. However, the PMPC will be sheared off during friction, which is difficult to meet the long-term service requirements of artificial joints. This can be achieved by improving the lubrication environment to minimize PMPC shedding. To simulate the human lubrication environment, free PMPC (lubrication factor) and Cu 2+ (transition group metal ion catalyst) were added to neonatal bovine serum (NBCS). When the friction pair consisting of grafted PMPC-modified HXLPE and Cu/ZrO 2 ceramics is rubbed therein, the grafted PMPC interacts with the free PMPC, while Cu 2+ catalyzes the oxidative hydrolysis of serum proteins into carbon-containing small molecules and adsorbs on the surface of the Cu/ZrO 2 ceramics to form a carbon-rich lubrication layer. The composite lubrication layer consisting of grafted-free PMPC and carbon-rich lubrication layer provides good load-bearing and lubrication properties at the friction interface. And the wear rate is reduced by 45% compared to rubbing in deionized water. This technique can reduce the shedding of grafted PMPC state and improve the load-bearing performance of the interfacial lubrication layer, thus reducing the wear of HXLPE and prolonging the service life of the artificial joint.
