Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs), a class of functional bioinspired surface, have earned a position at the forefront of many areas such as anticorrosion, anti-icing, antifogging, antibacterial, anticontaminant, microflow control, and drag reduction. However, the fast self-replenishing ability of SLIPS remains extremely challenging due to limited lubricant storage capacity or microstructure impeding fluid flow. Herein, a superhydrophobic surface was prepared by spraying the sepiolite/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 hybrid material with a layered three-dimensional (3D) fibrous porous network structure on the magnesium (Mg) alloy surface. Subsequently, SLIPS with fast self-replenishing properties was obtained by injecting silicone oil on the superhydrophobic surface. The unique internal structure of SLIPS not only served as a container for storing the lubricant but also provided a channel for the flow of lubricants. In addition, the SLIPS possessed favorable self-replenishment, anticontaminant, and anti-icing properties. Moreover, compared with the superhydrophobic surface, SLIPS exhibited better corrosion resistance, which was attributed to the stable continuous lubricating oil replacing the air trapped in the rough structure and effectively blocking the invasion of corrosive ions. Significantly, the as-prepared SLIPS still maintained excellent corrosion stability on the Mg alloy after soaking in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution for 30 days. The research provides an avenue for designing green environmental protection, sustainable anticorrosion, and rapidly self-replenishing SLIPSs with great application potential.

Developing high-efficiency lubricant additives and high-performance green cutting fluids has universal significance for maximizing processing efficiency, lowering manufacturing cost, and more importantly reducing environmental concerns caused by the use of conventional mineral oil-based cutting fluids. In this study, a nanocomposite is synthesized by filling sulfurized isobutylene (T321) into acid-treated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a liquid-phase wet chemical method. The milling performance of a nanocutting fluid containing CNTs@T321 composites is assessed using a micro-lubrication technology in terms of cutting temperature, cutting force, tool wear, and surface roughness. The composite nanofluid performs better than an individual CNT nanofluid regarding milling performance, with 12%, 20%, and 15% reductions in the cutting force, machining temperature, and surface roughness, respectively. The addition of CNTs@T321 nanocomposites improves the thermal conductivity and wetting performance of the nanofluid, as well as produces a complex lubricating film by releasing T321 during machining. The synergistic effect improves the cutting state at the tool–chip interface, thereby resulting in improved machining performance.

Recently, slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) is widely utilized for anti-icing. Nevertheless, a major challenge hindering the practical applications of SLIPS is the depletion of lubricating oil, significantly deteriorating its deicing performance. Given that super-slippery effects are not required during most non-icing periods, this research introduces a novel dynamic wettability-adjustable SLIPS anti-icing coating inspired by the nepenthes. This coating-comprising modified diatomaceous earth and soft silicone rubber-releases lubricating oil only when temperatures fall below −2 °C, thus exhibiting super-slippery characteristics and effectively preventing icing. The porous modified diatomaceous earth retains lubricating oil for prolonged periods and facilitates its controlled release under external forces. The high elasticity and strength of the soft silicone rubber endow the coating with thermal expansion and contraction capabilities, enabling the active absorption and release of lubricating fluid in response to temperature variations. This coating, prepared using a straightforward strategy, demonstrates an ice adhesion strength and an oil loss rate of less than 23 kPa and 13%, respectively, after 50 icing/de-icing cycles. These findings highlight the remarkable performance of the coating, providing valuable insights for achieving long-term anti-icing on the external surfaces of equipment in extreme working conditions.

Superhydrophobic/oleophilic coating was prepared on steel via wet chemical etching, and followed by surface modification. Surface grafting was manifested to be realized mainly on the oxidized area. Slippery liquid infused porous surface(s) (SLIPS) was prepared by infusing perfluorinated lubricant into the prepared superhydrophobic coating, to repel water, coffee, kerosene, and even hexane, suggesting a transition from superoleophilicity to lyophobicity. Furthermore, the lyohobicity was accessible only when the substrate is fluorinated. Moreover, the kinematic viscosity was demonstrated to be negatively correlated to the traveling speed of the liquids on the SLIPS.

When the impact force of the droplets is low (the Weber number is low), the influence of the solid surface and the lubricating liquid cannot be ignored. Here, slippery liquid-infused surfaces were prepared by hydrochloric acid etching and low surface energy triethoxy-1H,1H,2H,2H-tridecafluoro-n-octylsilane modification on Al sheets, then infiltrated with different lubricating liquids. The bounce behavior of droplets is studied under the condition of controlling the Weber number is 19. The results show that the lubricating liquids can be locked when the roughness is sufficient. The adhesion of a slippery liquid-infused surface is related to the surface tension and viscosity, which is lower, and it is more beneficial to droplet bounce. But lubricating fluids with too low viscosity are more likely to be lost from the microstructure after being struck by droplets. It is significant for the application of slippery liquid-infused surfaces in low impact. Graphical Abstract

Slippery liquid-infused surfaces (SLISs) are developed as a potential alternative to superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) to resolve the issues of poor durability in corrosion protection and wear resistance. In this work, we used a simple laser processing technology to prepare a SLIS on the aluminum alloy (7075) surface. The superhydrophobicities of the modified surface and the oil film formed by liquid injection make the corrosive medium difficult to directly contact the surface and thus have a significant effect on corrosion resistance. The water and oil repellent SLIS exhibits durable corrosion resistance and excellent tribological properties compared with the SHS. The anticorrosion and wear resistance performances provided by the composite film have been assessed by multiple methods including the electrochemical test, immersion test, and friction wear test. The results indicate that compared to the bare surface, laser-ablated surface (LAS), and fluoroalkyl silane-modified SHS, the SLIS composite coating has better corrosion resistance and wear resistance, which is of great significance to expand the potential applications of 7075 aluminum alloys. The work provides a research basis for expanding the practical application of SLISs in complex environments.

In spite of superior magnetic properties, neodymium–iron–boron (Nd-Fe-B) applications in harsh environments have been greatly hindered by their susceptibility to corrosion, humidity, mechanical, and temperature attacks. Herein, a construction strategy of robust slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) coatings is proposed via the multi-dimensional design of surface, bulk coating, and interface. The manipulation of colloidal states of silica particles by chemical hydrophobization allows for building a dense polymer network, enhancing interfacial adhesion and locking lubricant film effectively. The resulting coating is demonstrated to be extremely stable, endowing the magnet with excellent liquid repellency, anti-corrosion, and anti-icing properties. Strikingly, no trace of corrosion is detected after 136-day immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution and the impedance modulus at 0.1 Hz can be maintained as the initial of 3.31 × 10 8 Ω·cm 2 even after 132-day immersion, which is far superior to that of commercial Ni-Cu-Ni, Zn, and EP coatings. Additionally, anti-icing performance at low temperatures is evidenced by the delayed icing time and decreased ice adhesion strength. Importantly, the self-healing property offers the surface intensified durability even after mechanical damage. This work demonstrates a construction strategy of robust SLIPS coatings with a multi-dimensional design, enabling the practical applications of Nd-Fe-B magnets in extreme environments like offshore wind turbines.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have received growing attention as promising icephobic materials. In this study, SLIPS were prepared on aluminum alloys by combining anodization and infusion of common silicone oil. An SLIPS with low ice-adhesion strength (6 kPa) was obtained by optimizing the anodizing time parameters (10 min). In addition, the frosting process and freezing of water droplets on the as-prepared SLIPS at −10 °C were delayed for 2000 s and 4800 s, respectively. Simultaneously, the as-prepared SLIPS also exhibited excellent anti-icing performance in glaze ice, since the supercooled water drips/ice slipped from the surface. The ice weight of the as-prepared SLIPS was significantly lower than that of the bare aluminum surface and the anti-icing-fluid-coated aluminum surface, which was reduced by 38.2%–63.6% compared with the bare aluminum surface. The ice weight increased with decreased temperature and inclination angle. This work proposes a method suitable for large-area preparation of SLIPS that achieves excellent anti-icing performance and significantly reduces the weight of glaze ice. Keywords:slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces;anti-icing;glaze ice;ice-adhesion strength

Recently, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have attracted extensive attention due to their excellent anti-icing performance. However, the unsatisfactory durability resulting from the loss of lubricant hinders its practical application. Here, a micro/nanointegrated lubricant-infused surface combining microcone hole array and TiO 2 porous nanostructure (P-SLIPS) was fabricated, where its inverted pyramid-shaped microgroove can protect the nanoporous structure from being damaged. Experimental results show that with the aid of microcone hole array, the sanding repelling properties of P-SLIPS have dramatically improved with the significantly decreased ice adhesion strength after 7 sanding cycles. In the process of droplet scouring and dynamic icing, the icing phenomenon in P-SLIPS did not occur even after 10 sanding cycles, while this value is 3 sanding cycles in SLIPS. All of these could be attributed to the introduction of microcone array structure, which makes the coating not be completely damaged during the icing/deicing and sanding polishing processes. Thus, the anti-icing durability of the P-SLIPS can be greatly improved.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) possess great potential in antifouling and anti-corrosion applications owing to their remarkable liquid repellency. However, ensuring their long-term durability remains a challenge. Herein, long-term durable SLIPS coatings were prepared through constructing a micro/nano bimodal porous structure via plasma spraying of nano-agglomerated ceramic powders, followed by chemical modification and lubricant infiltration. The pore structure of SLIPS was tailored by varying spraying power. The bimodal porous-structured SLIPS exhibited long-term durability under various rigorous conditions including high shear stress, dynamic immersion, extensive water jet impact, and mechanical abrasion. Particularly, SLIPS-27 coating obtained at a spraying power of 27 kW displayed the most impressive stability and durability, which maintained great slipperiness with slightly increased sliding angle and 72.6 % lubricant retention even after dynamic immersion for 20 days. Additionally, after 10 days of bacterial adhesion assay and 20 days of algae adhesion assay, the SLIPS-27 coating demonstrated reduction rates of 87 %, 92 %, and 94 % with respect to settlements of E. coli , Chlorella , and P. tricornutum , respectively. Besides, after 10 days of immersion, the corrosion current density of SLIPS-27 was nearly two orders of magnitude lower than that of bare substrate, whereas the charge transfer resistance R ct possessed an increase by two orders of magnitude. The exceptional long-term antifouling and anti-corrosion performance of SLIPS-27 was due to the optimal incorporation of micro/nano bimodal pores, eventually endowing the coating with outstanding lubricant locking and lubricant storage abilities. This work paves a new way to facilely prepare SLIPS with remarkable and durable antifouling and anti-corrosion performance, as well as to advance their practical applications.

The depletion of lubricants in (slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces) SLIPS poses a significant challenge to their long-term functionality. While line-shaped rough structures can mitigate lubricant loss to some extent, they often fail to provide the stability required for sustained performance. In this study, we present a novel porous nanoflower aluminum alloy slippery liquid-infused surface (P-NF-AA SLIPS), which integrates a porous framework with a rough nanoflower structure. This synergistic design offers dual benefits of enhanced oil storage and retention, leading to superior stability and durability. Remarkably, after centrifugation at 7000 rpm, the silicone oil retention of P-NF-AA SLIPS remains between 70–75 % of its pre-centrifugation mass. The surface demonstrates excellent adaptability to prolonged use under varying temperatures and pH levels. In fog collection, P-NF-AA SLIPS demonstrates rapid water droplet capture and detachment, achieving a fog collection efficiency of approximately 0.4 g·min −1 ·cm −2 within 10 min—an improvement of 185.7 % and 68.4 % over the original aluminum alloy (OAA) and superhydrophobic aluminum alloy (SHB-AA), respectively. Additionally, P-NF-AA SLIPS delays icing by 560 s at −15 °C and 231 s at −30 °C, offering remarkable anti-icing and de-icing performance. Furthermore, it demonstrates excellent self-cleaning properties against contaminants such as sand, coffee powder, and dye solutions. P-NF-AA SLIPS has advanced research on SLIPS and supports the application of biomimetic slippery surfaces in fields such as self-cleaning materials, anti-icing and anti-frost coatings, droplet control and transport, as well as biomedical applications.

Newly developed slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) are highly promising for a broad range of applications. However, a major challenge remains in developing generalized methods to manufacture SLIPSs on versatile substrates. Herein, we report a simple and inexpensive method for forming SLIPSs by infusing a lubricating liquid into a nanoparticle–polymer film. We show that a stable liquid interface can repel various liquids (e.g., water, oil and ethanol) and maintain low contact angle hysteresis (<5°). The resulting gel-like porous film is mechanically robust. The repellency of the as-prepared SLIPSs is maintained even after exposure to continuous flow for several hours. By comparing the friction on a normal surface and on the SLIPSs at different flow velocities, we demonstrate that the as-prepared SLIPSs exhibited a drag reduction of ∼7% at a low wall shear rate. This study not only presents a convenient approach to create SLIPSs on arbitrary materials but also shows a drag-reducing effect and self-cleaning properties. We envision that our findings will be helpful in designing SLIPSs for broad applications, such as low-cost water transportation and oil pipelines.
