Owing to their inherent semi-solid property and lubricant ability, organogels manifest various unique characteristics and serve as promising candidates for antifouling. However, the poor mechanical properties of organogels often limit their practical applications. Herein, we report a simple and effective method to prepare organogels with reinforced mechanical performance and surface lubricant ability with the synergistic roles played by oleophobic and oleophilic chains. The rigid oleophobic chains have a poor affinity to lubricating solvent, which gives rise to high oleophobic interactions between polymer networks; the soft oleophilic chains possess a high affinity to the low surface energy solvent, which lead to high solvent content to maintain the satisfactory lubricant capacity. The organogel of oleophobic methyl methacrylate (MMA) and oleophilic lauryl methacrylate (LMA) is chosen as a representative example to illustrate this concept. With the optimal composition, the as-prepared organogels offer satisfactory tensile fracture stress, fracture strain, Young's modulus, toughness, and tearing fracture energy of 480 kPa, 550%, 202 kPa, 1.14 MJ m −3 , and 5.14 kJ m −2 , respectively, which are far beyond the classical PLMA organogels. Furthermore, the biofouling resistance tests demonstrate 4 to 9-fold reduction of protein and bacteria adhesion on the reinforced organogels surface in comparison to the glass substrate and solvent-free dry organogels. This simple and effective approach to toughen organogels, we hope, can be applied in various fields with different practical functional requirements in the future.

Osteoarthritis is a prevalent degenerative joint disease characterized by progressive articular cartilage loss and destruction. The resultant increase in friction causes severe pain. The collagen I matrix (COL I) has been used clinically for cartilage repair; however, how COL I acts at cartilage surfaces is unclear. Here, we studied adsorption and lubrication of synovial fluid components, albumin, γ-globulin, and the phospholipid DPPC, on COL I under physiological conditions using surface plasmon resonance and an in situ sensing surface force apparatus. Our results revealed COL I had poor lubrication ability, a fairly high coefficient of friction (COF, μ = 0.651 ± 0.013), and surface damage under a 7 mN load. DPPC formed an improved lubricating layer on COL I (μ = 0.072 ± 0.016). In sharp contrast, albumin and γ-globulin exhibited poor lubrication with an order of magnitude higher COF but still provided benefits by protecting COL I from wear. Hence, DPPC on COL I may help optimize COL I implantation design.

Attapulgite is a layered silicate with good friction-reduction and self-repairing properties. In order to further improve its tribological properties, the present work mainly focuses on the preparation of attapulgite/La2O3 nanocomposite and study on its tribological behaviors. The tribological properties of mineral lubricating oil (150SN) containing attapulgite/La2O3 nanocomposite were investigated through an Optimal SRV-IV oscillating friction and wear tester. The rubbing surfaces and generated tribofilms were characterized by SEM, EDS, XPS and nanoindentation. Results indicated that the friction-reducing ability and antiwear property of the oil were both remarkably improved by attapulgite/La2O3 nanocomposite. A tribofilm mainly composed of Fe, Fe3C, FeO, Fe2O3, FeOOH, SiO, SiO2 and organic compound was formed on the rubbing surface under the lubrication of oil with attapulgite/La2O3 nanocomposite. The tribofilm possess excellent self-lubricating ability and mechanical properties, which is responsible for the reduction of friction and wear.

Intraarticular injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) for viscosupplementation is a nonsurgical therapy for osteoarthritis (OA). However, HA fails to lubricate under a significant load and tends to be depolymerized by the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in inflammation. Here, we for the first time reported that fullerene-like MoS2 (F-MoS2) nanoparticles are efficient lubricants and antioxidants for artificial synovial fluid. A model of arthrosis was built, to evaluate the tribological behavior of F-MoS2 nanoparticles. The tests showed that they significantly improve the antiwear and friction-reducing abilities of the artificial synovial fluid. More importantly, the F-MoS2 nanoparticles possess intrinsic dual-enzyme-like activity, mimicking superoxide dismutases (SOD) and catalases (CAT) under physiological conditions (pH 7.4, 25 °C). By coupling of these unique properties, a self-organized cascade catalytic system was constructed, which includes the disproportionation of superoxide radicals (O2•–) to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and subsequently the disproportionation of H2O2 into oxygen (O2). The effectiveness of the detox system was evaluated by human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) models exposed to oxidative stress. After that, F-MoS2 nanoparticles were used to regulate the ROS level in artificial synovial fluid containing HA. Relative viscosity measurements showed the excellent protective effect of F-MoS2 nanoparticles against HA oxidative damage offered by O2•–. These results indicate that F-MoS2 nanoparticles are promising candidates for treatment of OA and other diseases caused by lubrication deficiency or oxidative stress.

Background Mechanical and biological complications associated with implant systems happen frequently in the clinic. Purpose To develop a chitosan (CS)-based thermosensitive hydrogel for sealing and lubricating purposes in dental implant system. Materials and Methods In this study, a thermosensitive hydrogel made up of CS, β-glycerophosphate pentahydrate (β-GP), and povidone-iodine (PVP-I), called CS/β-GP/PVP-I thermosensitive hydrogel, was fabricated. Three experimental groups with different volume ratios of CS to β-GP were prepared, namely 16/4, 13/7, and 10/10 groups. The surface topography of the different groups and their physicochemical characteristics were examined by SEM, FTIR, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The cytotoxicity of the hydrogel was examined by CCK-8 test. In vitro antibacterial efficiency was analyzed by the spread plate method. Sealing ability was detected by incubating two-piece implants in Escherichia coli suspension. Lubricating ability of the hydrogel was evaluated by the removal torque test with a calibrated digital torque meter. Results The CS/β-GP/PVP-I thermosensitive hydrogel was fabricated and showed a highly porous structure under SEM. An in vitro cytotoxicity test demonstrated that 13/7 group displayed no cytotoxicity. Furthermore, all three groups showed obviously antibacterial effects. In the sealing ability test, 16/4 group showed the best sealing ability. The removal torque of 16/4 group and 13/7 group was significantly greater than control group. Conclusions Based on our findings, it could be concluded that the thermosensitive and antibacterial CS/β-GP/PVP-I hydrogel with sealing and lubricating ability was successfully prepared. The hydrogel had better sealing and lubricating effects when the volume ratio of CS to β-GP was 16/4.
