Triboelectric Nanogenerator as a Probe for Measuring the Charge Transfer between Liquid and Solid Surfaces

Jinyang Zhang,Shiquan Lin,Mingli Zheng,Zhong Lin Wang

The phenomenon of triboelectricity involves the flow of charged species across an interface, but conclusively establishing the nature of the charge transfer has proven extremely difficult, especially for the liquid–solid cases. Herein, we developed a self-powered droplet triboelectric nanogenerator (droplet-TENG) with spatially arranged electrodes as a probe for measuring the charge transfer process between liquid and solid interfaces. The information on the electric signal on spatially arranged electrodes shows that the charge transfer between droplets and the solid is an accumulation process during the dropping and that the electron is the dominant charge-transfer species. Such a droplet-TENG showed a high sensitivity to the ratio of solvents in the mixed organic solution, and we postulated this is due to the possibility of generation of a hydrogen bond, affecting the electric signal on the spatially arranged electrodes. This work demonstrated a chemical sensing application based on the self-powered droplet triboelectric nanogenerator.

Establishment of Gas–Liquid–Solid Interface on Multilevel Porous Cu2O for Potential-Driven Selective CO2 Electroreduction toward C1 or C2 Products

Changjiang Liu,Hu Zang,Xin Liu,Haiyan Lu,Nan Yu,Baoyou Geng

Copper-based catalysts demonstrate distinctive multicarbon product activity in the CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR); however, their low selectivity presents significant challenges for practical applications. Herein, we have developed a multilevel porous spherical Cu2O structure, wherein the mesopores are enriched with catalytic active sites and effectively stabilize Cu+, while the macropores facilitate the formation of a “gas–liquid–solid” three-phase interface, thereby creating a microenvironment with an increasing water concentration gradient from the interior to the exterior. Potential-driven phase engineering and protonation synergistically optimize the reaction pathway, facilitating a switch between CO and C2H4. At a low current density of 100 mA cm–2, the faradaic efficiency (FE) for CO reaches an impressive 96.97%. When the current density increases to 1000 mA cm–2, FEC2H4 attains 53.05%. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that at lower potentials, the pure Cu2O phase diminishes the adsorption of *CO intermediates, while weak protonation inhibits hydrogen evolution reactions, thereby promoting CO production. Conversely, at more negative potentials, the Cu0/Cu+ interface and strong protonation generate locally elevated concentrations of *CO and *COOH intermediates, which enhance C–C coupling and deep hydrogenation, ultimately improving selectivity toward C2+ products. This study provides novel insights into the rational design of copper-based catalysts for customizable CO2 electroreduction products.

Flow Interface Regulates Charge and Reactivity of Bulk Liquid

Yunlong Yu,Zixuan Song,Boran Xu,Yunxin Tang,Qiangqiang Sun,Shaobing Zhou

Flow alters the charge distribution at the solid–liquid interface. However, the property change in bulk liquids in the flow has received little attention. In this article, we show that the charge separation between liquid and solid surfaces is controllable, and interfacial chemistry is changed to make electrostatically charged and reactive water. We designed a pipeline with unequal cross-sectional diameters at both ends to enhance the pressure difference between the two ends of the pipeline. By adjusting the flow rate, pipeline length, and cross-sectional diameter of the conical port, we achieved flexible control of the amount of liquid charge. To further regulate the liquid charge, we grafted charged molecular brushes onto the inner wall of the pipeline. In particular, the polarity of liquid charges is opposite to the polarity of the pipeline’s inner wall surface. Finally, we demonstrated the chemical activity of charged water through oxidative degradation of methylene blue and reduction of chloroauric acid.

Electrostatic breakdown at liquid-solid-gas triple-phase interfaces owing to contact electrification

Cuiying Ye,Di Liu,Yikui Gao,Fan Liu,Hongxuan Xu,Tao Jiang,Zhong Lin Wang

Electrification at water-solid interfaces, which enhances interfacial physical and chemical reactions, plays a crucial role in energy fields. However, the fundamental limits on charge transfer due to contact electrification (CE) at these interfaces remain poorly understood. Here, we first demonstrate electrostatic breakdown (EB) in the vicinity of liquid-solid-gas interfaces, which is attributed to the enhanced electric field in the gas close to the triple-phase contact line. Furthermore, we discover the significant impact of distant conductors on the interface electric field depending on their locations and grounding statuses and observe two types of breakdowns. Guided by an established physical model of breakdown, we achieve a record-high charge density of 1.36 mC m −2 in CE at water-insulator interfaces. Finally, we show the broad impact of EB on energy harvesting, surface wettability, and droplet motion at water-insulator interfaces. This previously unexplored EB phenomenon could offer new insights into interfacial charge and energy exchange at water-solid interfaces.

Probing Contact-Electrification-Induced Electron and Ion Transfers at a Liquid–Solid Interface

Jinhui Nie,Zewei Ren,Liang Xu,Shiquan Lin,Fei Zhan,Xiangyu Chen,Zhong Lin Wang

As a well-known phenomenon, contact electrification (CE) has been studied for decades. Although recent studies have proven that CE between two solids is primarily due to electron transfer, the mechanism for CE between liquid and solid remains controversial. The CE process between different liquids and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film is systematically studied to clarify the electrification mechanism of the solid–liquid interface. The CE between deionized water and PTFE can produce a surface charges density in the scale of 1 nC cm −2 , which is ten times higher than the calculation based on the pure ion-transfer model. Hence, electron transfer is likely the dominating effect for this liquid–solid electrification process. Meanwhile, as ion concentration increases, the ion adsorption on the PTFE hinders electron transfer and results in the suppression of the transferred charge amount. Furthermore, there is an obvious charge transfer between oil and PTFE, which further confirms the presence of electron transfer between liquid and solid, simply because there are no ions in oil droplets. It is demonstrated that electron transfer plays the dominant role during CE between liquids and solids, which directly impacts the traditional understanding of the formation of an electric double layer (EDL) at a liquid–solid interface in physical chemistry.

Studying the droplet sliding velocity and charge transfer at a liquid–solid interface

Xuejiao Wang,Jinyang Zhang,Xin Liu,Shiquan Lin,Zhong Lin Wang

The contact electrification between liquid and solid has attracted widespread attention in the fields of energy, physics and chemistry, but its basic mechanism still remains unclear, especially for charge transfer at a liquid–solid interface. Here, the droplet triboelectric nanogenerator (droplet-TENG) was used as a probe to measure the charge transfer at different sliding speeds of a moving droplet. By varying the sliding speed and concentration of the moving droplet, the transferred charges generated at a liquid–solid interface are found to be highly dependant on the sliding velocity of the droplet on the hydrophobic surface: the faster sliding speed leads to more transferred charges. However, such effect is not obvious when the droplet has higher concentration, which provides direct evidence of a “two-step” model for the formation of the electric double-layer (EDL): where electron transfer occurs when the liquid droplet contacts a hydrophobic surface for the very first time, and then ion adsorption follows. The process of surface charge transfer is probed by droplet-TENG. This work is significant for better understanding of the charge transfer at a liquid–solid interface, and devises a method to maximize tribocharging in droplet-TENG, describing a concept potentially suitable for velocity sensing applications based on the self-powered droplet-TENG.

Unveiling Contact-Electrification Effect on Interfacial Water Oscillation

Zhen Tang,Shiquan Lin,Zhong Lin Wang

Water is crucial for various physicochemical processes at the liquid–solid interfaces. In particular, the interfacial water, mediating the electric field and solvation effect along with the solid, corporately determine the electrochemical properties. Understanding the interaction between solid properties and the interface water holds significant importance in interfacial dynamics. However, the impact of alterations in the charged state of solid surfaces induced by contact electrification on interfacial water remains unknown. Here, the evolution of atomic-level resolution maps of hydration layers are reported on charged surfaces using 3D atomic force microscopy (3D-AFM). These findings demonstrate that electrostatic interactions can reinforce, distort, or collapse the characteristic structure of hydration layers. More importantly, these interactions exhibit interlayer differences and sample specificity in hydration layer structures of different substrates. In addition, similar oscillations of the hydration layer are observed at the electrochemical interface under different voltage biases. This suggests that contact-electrification has the potential to serve as a novel method for manipulating and regulating chemical reactions at the interface.

Resonant-Cantilever-Detected Kinetic/Thermodynamic Parameters for Aptamer–Ligand Binding on a Liquid–Solid Interface

Xuefeng Wang,Yarong Cheng,Shengran Cai,Jianzhong Chen,Pengcheng Xu,Ying Chen,Haitao Yu,Tiegang Xu,Sen Zhang,Xinxin Li

Nucleic acid aptamers have been widely used as recognition elements on various biosensing interfaces, but quantitative kinetic/thermodynamic analysis for revealing the aptamer–ligand binding mechanism, which occurs on a liquid–solid interface, has not been realized due to a lack of usable biophysical tools. Herein we apply a resonant microcantilever sensor to continuously record the frequency shift according to the binding-induced mass change on the liquid–solid interface. The frequency-shift curve is used for tracing the reaction process and is fitted with classic equations to calculate a set of kinetic/thermodynamic parameters, such as rate constants (ka = 902.95 M–1 s–1, kd = 0.000141 s–1), equilibrium constants (KD = 1.55 μM), the Gibbs free energy (ΔG° = −32.57 kJ/mol), and the activation energy (Ea = 38.03 kJ/mol) for the immobilized aptamer and free ATP. This quantitative analysis method is label-free, calibration-free, and highly sensitive. The kinetic/thermodynamic parameter detection method provides new resolution to the in-depth understanding of the ligand–aptamer interaction on the liquid–solid interface for biosensing or lab-on-a-chip applications.

Stretchable shape-adaptive liquid-solid interface nanogenerator enabled by in-situ charged nanocomposite membrane

Fei Liang,Xue Jiao Zhao,Hua Yang Li,You Jun Fan,Jin Wei Cao,Zhong Lin Wang,Guang Zhu

Wearable and portable electronics for water environment application are of paramount significance, however restricted by its power source component. It remains a great challenge to simultaneously achieve ultra stretchability and high electric output performance for most energy harvesters in water. Herein, we report a high-performance stretchable liquid-solid contact electrification-based nanogenerator (S-LSNG) that enables water wave energy harvesting and subtle motion monitoring in water by an in-situ charged nanocomposite membrane . Notably, the effectively charged PTFE nanoparticles (100 nm) in this novel membrane can highly promote the output of S-LSNG. For the first time, the excellent stretchability (tensile strain, 200%), high output performance (open-circuit voltage of 120 V and short-circuit current of 18 μA) and ultra-thin device structure (300 μm) were achieved simultaneously for a liquid-solid contact electrification-based nanogenerator. Besides, the output performance of S-LSNG barely changed even after 100000 submerging-emerging cycles. In addition, the application of motion monitoring for human body in water was also demonstrated, such as single finger motion sensing and complex motion sensing of multiple-fingers. Because of the excellent stretchability, output performance and durability, the S-LSNG would be extensively applied to a sustainable energy supplier for the stretchable and wearable electronics in water.

Toward Unified Mechanism of Bias-Dependent Switching in Reactive Self-Assembly Systems

Nianyue Zhang,Shuilong Kang,Meng Zhang,Sifan You,Xiang Hu,Guangyuan Feng,Kunal S. Mali,Steven De Feyter,Oleksandr Ivasenko,Lifeng Chi,Yuan Fang

Reversible transitions of surface-adsorbed molecules under external stimuli hold great promise for advancing nanotechnology. Electric fields, in particular, can provide highly localized and tunable forces, enabling on-demand manipulation of molecular assembly and reactivity. However, despite extensive studies, the mechanism governing bias-induced phase transitions in surface-confined systems, particularly those involving neutral molecules like boronic acids, remains ambiguous. Addressing this gap is crucial for the rational design of tunable molecular assemblies. Here, we employ a competitive adsorption strategy to investigate the electric field-mediated switching of multicomponent systems comprising boronic acids and an inert reference compound at the liquid–solid interface. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we uncovered distinct bias-dependent behaviors, including reversible dynamic exchange and phase transitions. Our findings identify partial ionization as a key mechanism driving the dynamic exchange and structural transformations of boronic acids.

Surfactant-assisted self-assembly and fractal evolution of the aluminosilicate species with insights into clinoptilolite nucleation and selective CO2/CH4 adsorption

Ming Liu,Nan Sun,Ruohan Xu,Tallat Munir,Shiyang Bai,Jihong Sun

The surfactant involvement in hydrothermal synthesis system of clinoptilolite (CP) is an effective strategy for regulating self-assemble of the aluminosilicate species. Herein, using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant, the CTAB-assisted influences on nucleation behavior of CP were demonstrated via various characterizations. Especially, small angle X-ray scattering patterns were used to investigate the fractal structural evolutions of aluminosilicate species in their sol-gel phase. The results indicated that the primary building structural units with 8- and 10-membered rings appeared in the early induced stage gradually aggregated into the worm-liked particles with the prolonged crystallization time. Among them, the nucleation process was initiated by reorganization via the solution-mediated transport and thereafter appeared the pseudo-layered structures with the core (aluminosilicate species)-shell (CTAB) features at the liquid-solid interfaces. The irregulated lamellas with the heulandite structures increased in size of around 70 nm until reaching the maximum of 90 nm, then followed the occurrences of the re-dissolving and repaid growth. Especially, the lamellar nuclei growth showed the transformations from loose mass fractals to dense surface fractals with the extensions of the induced time. In which, the interfacial solvation layer thickness increased from 1.04 to 2.87 nm for CTAB-assisted CP, thicker than that (0.63–2.08 nm) for pure-CP. These demonstrations suggested that the additive CTAB in the induced stage inhibited the agglomeration of the aluminosilicate species and following growth of the crystal nuclei via the solvated attachments pathway. Finally, using the irregulated particle as an adsorbent, the CO 2 adsorption and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity were preliminarily explored.
