The utilization of solid particles in aqueous foam has a great potential in improving fire fighting efficiency. In this study, aqueous foam supported by micro fly-ash (FA) was prepared and its stability in a specific type of oil was characterized. Firstly, different amount of FA was added to study the influence of FA concentration on foamability. It showed that within a specific extent, foam expansion ratio increased with the increasing of FA concentration. And compared with conventional foams, oil resistance of FA stabilized foams, which was investigated by analyzing drainage rate and evolution process with a self-made apparatus, was remarkably improved when FA concentration exceed 4.8wt.%. Secondly, SiO2 and Al2O3 particles with different median sizes were used to study the effect of particle size on stability. However, the smaller hydrophilic particles didn’t behave better as expected. Moreover, the foam stability in three hydrocarbons was evaluated in the same way. The results indicated that the short chain hydrocarbons had much stronger detrimental effect to both two-phase foam and three-phase foam. But overall, the three-phase foam stabilized by FA exhibited much better oil resistance, so it can be used as a promising material for pool fire extinguishing and prevention.GRAPHICAL

The present work reports on the promoting effects of rare earth elements (La, Ce and Y) to FeK/Al 2 O 3 catalysts on liquid hydrocarbons from CO 2 hydrogenation. The addition of La, Ce and Y can both improve the selectivity of C 5+ hydrocarbons and reduce the selectivity of CH 4 . The C 5+ selectivity can enhance to about 60 % with CH 4 selectivity of around 11 % at CO 2 conversions above 20 %. N 2 adsorption–desorption, in situ XRD, H 2 –TPR, CO 2 /H 2 –TPD, HRTEM and XPS are used to characterize the FeK/Al 2 O 3 and FeK/M-Al 2 O 3 (M = La, Ce, Y) catalysts. The results show that the introduction of rare earth elements into the FeK/Al 2 O 3 catalyst obviously reduces the adsorption of H 2 , which suppresses the CH 4 formation. On the other hand, rare earth elements also promote the adsorbed CO 2 species, which leads to the enhanced liquid hydrocarbons selectivity. Finally, the tailored CO 2 /H 2 ratio of CO 2 and H 2 adsorption on the catalyst surface can influence the catalyst activity and the product selectivity evidently.

Designing Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalysts to selectively produce liquid hydrocarbon fuels is a crucial challenge. Herein, we selectively introduced Co nanoparticles (NPs) into the micropores and mesopores of an ordered mesoporous MFI zeolite (OMMZ) through impregnation, which controlled the carbon number distribution in the FTS products by tuning the position of catalytic active sites in differently sized pores. The Co precursors coordinated by acetate with a size of 9.4 × 4.2 × 2.5 Å and by 2,2 ‘ -bipyridine with a size of 9.5 × 8.7 × 7.9 Å, smaller and larger than the micropores ( ca. 5.5 Å) of MFI , made the Co species incorporated in OMMZ's micropores and mesopores, respectively. The carbon number products synthesized with the Co NPs confined in mesopores were larger than that in micropores. The high jet and diesel selectivities of 66.5% and 65.3% were achieved with Co NPs confined in micropores and mesopores of less acidic Na-type OMMZ, respectively. Gasoline and jet selectivities of 76.7% and 70.8% were achieved with Co NPs confined in micropores and mesopores of H-type OMMZ with Brönsted acid sites, respectively. A series of characterizations revealed that the selective production of diesel and jet fuels was due to the C–C cleavage suppressing of heavier hydrocarbons by the Co NPs located in mesopores.

Direct hydrogenation of CO 2 to liquid hydrocarbons via modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis represents an appealing and sustainable route for efficient CO 2 utilization. However, the selective production of liquid hydrocarbons remains a significant challenge. In this work, we designed a series of carbon-coated K/Fe-C catalysts with various K loadings (ranging from 0 to 8 wt%) that enhance C 5+ hydrocarbon selectivity during CO 2 hydrogenation. It is found that the 4 K/Fe-C catalyst exhibits the highest C 5+ selectivity of 54.78 % at CO 2 conversion of 32.40 % and good stability within 100 h time-on-stream. This is attributed to the high dispersion of the Fe nanoparticles and the confinement effect of porous carbon matrix on the aggregation of Fe nanoparticles, resulting in high catalytic activity and selectivity. Meanwhile, the well dispersed K on the porous carbon matrix can reduce the particle size of Fe nanoparticles and promote the production of iron carbide active species for CO 2 -FTS, thus facilitating the selective formation of C 5+ hydrocarbons. Moreover, we also discussed a possible reaction mechanism for the direct hydrogenation of CO 2 to C 5+ hydrocarbons over the K/Fe-C catalysts. This study provides deep insights into the design of efficient Fe-C catalysts for converting CO 2 to liquid hydrocarbons.

The exploitation of bimetallic catalysts to lignin for sustainable aviation biofuels remains a daunting challenge due to the low selectivity of aviation biofuel-range hydrocarbons and inconsistent reaction mechanism. Herein, bimetallic supported on SiO 2 catalysts were prepared and their hydrodeoxygenation reactivity during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis was explored. Approximately 100 % selectivity toward aviation-range hydrocarbons were achieved using eugenol as model compound under relatively mild conditions with the presence of NiMo/SiO 2 . For lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis, the yield of liquid hydrocarbons and the selectivity of aviation-range hydrocarbons was 21.99 wt% and 70.50 %, respectively. High mass balance (89.66 %) was verified by scale-up experiments in a continuous flow high-pressure reactor system. The reactivity of demethoxylation reaction, dehydroxylation reaction, and benzene ring hydrogenation reaction with the presence of bimetallic catalysts were analyzed. The density functional theory calculation and verification experiments revealed the evolution pathway of aromatic hydrocarbons and cycloalkanes from lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis. The proposed reaction mechanism can provide guidance for the regulation of aviation biofuel components from lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis.

Conventional fractionation of liquid hydrocarbons relies on energy-intensive distillation. While organic solvent reverse osmosis provides an energy-efficient alternative, the challenge lies in engineering membranes with accurately tailored molecular differentiation for complex hydrocarbons. Here, we develop diverse fluorinated polyimide membranes featuring programmable polymer chain architectures for efficient hydrocarbon separation. By stoichiometry-controlled polycondensation, the chain packing and microporosity of synthesized polyimides are finely regulated, verified by molecular simulations. The corresponding asymmetrical membranes with defect-free thin layers of 100 to 250 nanometers are prepared via solution casting and thermal annealing steps. Such programmed membranes enable tunable permselectivity for hydrocarbons with less than 40 carbon atoms. The fractionation of kerosene-paraffin mixture in toluene is demonstrated through a two-stage process containing the optimized membranes. The cascade process remarkably enriches the C 10 -C 13 hydrocarbons from 50% up to 97%. The demonstrated polyimide membranes with on-demand molecular discrimination capability provide a potential candidate for the membrane-based hydrocarbon fractionation.
