Water residue and replacement difficulty cause insufficient adhesive infiltration in demineralized dentin matrix (DDM), which produces a defective hybrid layer and thus a bonding durability problem, severely plaguing adhesive dentistry for decades. In this study, we propose that the unique properties of a highly hydrated interface of the porous DDM can give rise to 1 new type of interface, confined liquid water, which accounts for most of the residue water and may be the main cause of insufficient infiltration. To prove our hypothesis, 3 metal ions with increasing binding affinity and complex stability (Na+, Ca2+, and Cu2+) were introduced respectively to coordinate negatively charged groups such as -PO43−, -COO− abundant in the DDM interface. Strong chelation of Ca2+ and Cu2+ rapidly released the confined water, significantly improving penetration of hydrophobic adhesive monomers, while Na+ had little effect. A significant decrease of defects in the hybrid layer and a much decreased modulus gap between the hybrid layer and the adhesive layer greatly optimized the microstructure and micromechanical properties of the tooth–resin bonding interface, thus improving the effectiveness and durability of dentin bonding substantially. This study paves the way for a solution to the core scientific issue of contemporary adhesive dentistry: water residue and replacement in dentin bonding, both theoretically and practically.

As the most widely used material for dental tissue repair, dental resin composites face durability challenges, whose longevity critically depends on the hybrid layer's integrity. Incomplete adhesive infiltration within the demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) creates structural defects in this layer, rendering it vulnerable to stress concentration, enzymatic degradation, and bacterial invasion. These factors contribute to secondary caries, the predominant complication of resin-based restorations. Enhancing both adhesive infiltration and the hybrid layer’s antibacterial capacity is thus pivotal to extending restoration lifespan. Previous studies revealed that strong metal ion chelation can mobilize confined water to facilitate hydrophobic monomer infiltration, significantly improving dentin bonding efficacy and durability. In this study, leveraging the dual advantages of Ag⁺—potent chelation and antibacterial activity—we treated DDM with Ag⁺. A brief 20-second application enabled confined water release, enhanced adhesive infiltration, and conferred durable antibacterial functionality to chemically modified DDM. Additionally, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activated during bonding were effectively inhibited. Crucially, subsequent light irradiation reduced Ag⁺ to metallic silver, enhancing structural stability by orders of magnitude. This approach successfully established a low-defect hybrid layer with intrinsic, long-lasting antimicrobial properties. The strategy offers a clinically viable solution for achieving durable dentin restoration with integrated antibacterial defense.

The lithium metal anode is a desirable choice owing to its high theoretical specific capacity. Despite their promising potential, lithium metal batteries (LMBs) face significant challenges in practical applications, such as uncontrolled growth of lithium dendrites and an unstable interface that occurs during repeated deposition and exfoliation of the lithium anode Therefore, this study employs a simple chemical immersion method, which can not only construct a Li-Ca alloy protective layer to improve lithium-ion transport but also provide a LiF-rich interface to further enhance the mechanical strength of the protective layer. The obtained Li-Ca alloy-LiF hybrid layer shows improved performance of the lithium anode. The results indicate that the Li-Li symmetric cell composed of the treated Li can undergo stable cycling over 3000 h under various cycling conditions and also exhibit excellent cycle performance in the Li-LiFePO 4 cell.

Lead sulfide colloid quantum dots (PbS QDs) offer great opportunities to revolutionize large-area short-wave infrared (SWIR) detection technologies due to high absorption coefficients and spectral selectivity. However, a critical issue for QDs-based SWIR detectors is high dark current noise due to thermal carriers and the large amounts of surface defect states induced by the ligand exchange process, which hinders the improvement of the room temperature detectivity and linear dynamic range. Herein, it is demonstrated that these dilemmas can be overcome by adopting a novel hybrid-layered phototransistor device architecture composed of a self-assembly high-mobility organic conduction channel and a bulk heterojunction infrared absorber containing PbS QDs as sensitizers. Strong photo absorption in the photoactive layer creates photogenerated charges that are transferred to the conduction channel, where they recirculate many times due to the long trapped-electron lifetime in the photoactive layer and the high carrier mobility of the channel. Therefore, low dark current noise and high photoconductive gain are achieved by both electrical gating and photodoping for carrier-density modulation of phototransistors. Finally, an optimized SWIR phototransistor device with a low room-temperature dark current of 7 pA and a high detectivity of 8 × 10 12 Jones under 1650 nm light illumination is demonstrated.

Li metal anode is considered to be the most potential battery anode due to its high theoretical capacity and low potential. However, Li dendritic growth hinders its practical application. Here, a stable Li-metal anode with a fluorinated hybrid layer is fabricated by a simple chemical-modification strategy. The stabilization of Li metal is attributed to the formation of chemical and mechanical stability hybrid protective layer consisting of bulk alloy and Li fluoride, which can effectively minimize the side reactions and suppress Li dendrite growth. With these advantages, the LiF/Li3Mg7-protected Li electrodes enable the Li||Li symmetric cell to maintain a stable overpotential of 25 mV at a capacity of 1 mAh cm–2 over 1800 h and enable the Li||LiFePO4 cell to a capacity of 134.5 mAh g–1 at 1 C for 200 cycles; the capacity retention rate is 98.6%.

In order to improve the interfacial strength and toughness of aluminum alloys and CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) hybrid laminates, modified resin with lower porosity was prepared by adding nano silica treated with silane coupling agent into epoxy resin. Al/CFRP hybrid laminates with modified resin were prepared by physical liquid deposition method and hot-press process. The strength and toughness of Al/CFRP hybrid laminates with modified resin were evaluated by tensile shear test and end notch fracture (ENF) test. The experimental results showed that the interfacial shear strength of Al/CFRP hybrid modified resin laminates is 18.8 ± 0.8 MPa and the fracture energy is 1546.33 ± 10.26 J /m 2 , which is 28.76 % and 15.38 % higher than that of Al/CFRP hybrid laminates with raw resin, respectively. The well-dispersed silicon nanoparticles effectively mitigate internal stress during the cross-linking process of the modified resin, thereby diminishing the dimensions of microcracks within the modified resin. The transition layer of the modified resin interface formed a cooperative and smooth structure. This structure can ensure that the transition of elements in the interface layer is smooth, and it is not easy to cause stress concentration. The formation of new bonds (C-Si bonds) at the interface of the modified resin indicates an enhancement of bonding strength at the interface, superimposing upon van der Waals forces, thereby enhancing the adhesive strength of the modified resin interface.

Objective: This paper aimed to assess the impact of the acetone wet-bonding (AWB) technique on dentin bonding and to investigate its potential underlying mechanisms. Materials and Methods: Caries-free third molars were sliced, ground, etched, water-rinsed. Then the specimens were randomly allocated to four groups according to the following pretreatments: 1. water wet-bonding (WWB); 2. ethanol wet-bonding (EWB); 3. 50% (v/v) acetone aqueous solution (50%AWB); 4. 100% acetone solution (AWB). Singlebond universal adhesive was then applied and composite buildups were constructed. The microtensile bond strength (MTBS), failure modes and interface nanoleakage were respectively evaluated after 24 h of water storage, 10,000 times of thermocycling or 1-month collagenase ageing. In situ zymography and contact angle were also investigated. Results: Acetone pretreatment preserved MTBS after thermocycling or collagenase ageing ( p < 0.05) without affecting the immediate MTBS ( p > 0.05). Furthermore, AWB group manifested fewer nanoleakage than WWB group. More importantly, the contact angle of the dentin surfaces decreased significantly and collagenolytic activities within the hybrid layer were suppressed in AWB group. Conclusion: This study suggested that the AWB technique was effective in enhancing the dentin bond durability by increasing the wettability of dentin surface to dental adhesives, removing residual water in the hybrid layer, improving the penetration of adhesive monomer, and inhibiting the collagenolytic activities. Clinical significance: The lifespan of adhesive restorations would be increased by utilization of acetone wet-bonding technique.

Accurate understanding of diffusion of anionic radionuclides in different clays is significant to predict long-term performance of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) repositories. The importance of electrical double layer (EDL) on anionic tracer diffusion in different clays has been studied by both through-diffusion experiments and pore-scale simulations in this work. The through-diffusion experiments measured the effective diffusion coefficient and the accessible porosity of Re (VII) in compacted montmorillonite, Na-bentonite, and illite/smectite mixed layer (I/S) at different salinities. The results showed that the accessible porosity and the effective diffusion coefficient of Re (VII) in montmorillonite and Na-bentonite were similar but lower than those in I/S under the same conditions. For mechanism analysis and predictions, a pore-scale modeling was implemented to simulate the diffusion of anions in compacted clays. In the simulations, the characteristics (porosity, density, and total surface area) of microstructures of montmorillonite and I/S were used to regenerate three-dimensional pore structures numerically by a Quartet Structure Generation Set method. The Re (VII) diffusion was then simulated by directly solving coupled Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations via the lattice Boltzmann method. The diminished effect of EDL was therefore calculated and compared with Donnan and multiporosity models. As EDLs overlap in compacted clays, the Donnan model overestimates the influence of EDL on Re (VII) diffusion, while the multiporosity model underestimates it. The pore-scale modeling, which captures the structure of overlapping EDLs automatically, can simulate the diffusion of anionic radionuclides in compacted clays without any fitting parameters. Key Points A method to link through-diffusion experiments and a pore-scale modeling Prediction of Re (VII) diffusion in montmorillonite, Na-bentonite, and illite/smectite mixed layer Effect of the electrical double layer on Re (VII) diffusion in illite/smectite mixed layer decreases compared with that in montmorillonite

Solution-processed organic–inorganic hybrids composing of MoO3 nanoparticles and PEDOT:PSS were developed for use in inverted organic solar cells as hole transporting layer (HTL). The hybrid MoO3:PEDOT:PSS inks were prepared by simply mixing PEDOT:PSS aqueous and MoO3 ethanol suspension together. A core–shell structure was proposed in the MoO3:PEDOT:PSS hybrid ink, where PEDOT chains act as the core and MoO3 nanoparticles connected with PSS chains act as the composite shell. The mixing with PEDOT:PSS suppressed the aggregation of MoO3 nanoparticles, which led to a smoother surface. In addition, since the hydrophilic PSS chains were passivated through preferentially connection with MoO3, the stronger adhesion between MoO3 nanoparticles and the photoactive layer improved the film forming ability of the MoO3:PEDOT:PSS hybrid ink. The MoO3:PEDOT:PSS hybrid HTL can therefore be feasibly deposited onto the hydrophobic photoactive polymer layer without any surface treatment. The use of the MoO3:PEDOT:PSS hybrid HTL resulted in the optimized P3HT:PC61BM- and PTB7:PC61BM-based inverted organic solar cells reaching highest power conversion efficiencies of 3.29% and 5.92%, respectively, which were comparable with that of the control devices using thermally evaporated MoO3 HTL (3.05% and 6.01%, respectively). Furthermore, less HTL thickness dependence of device performance was found for the hybrid HTL-based devices, which makes it more compatible with roll-to-roll printing process. In the end, influence of the blend ratio of MoO3 to PEDOT:PSS on photovoltaic performance and device stability was studied carefully, results indicated that the device performance would decrease with the increase of MoO3 blended ratio, whereas the long-term stability was improved.

An effective and easily-handled strategy for enhancing the interfacial adhesion of CF/PEEK-titanium hybrid laminates was proposed, which was achieved by introducing micro-nano layers with multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) networks between titanium and PEEK layers via electrophoretic deposition . The optimal deposition condition was explored by setting different concentrations of MWCNTs and times of deposition. Short beam shear tests were conducted at room temperature to characterize the interlaminar shear strength of the hybrid laminates. The results showed that the optimum parameters of deposition were 0.75 mg/mL of MWCNTs concentration and 90 s of deposition time , leading to a 47.8% increase of interlaminar shear strength compared with the sandblasted-only case. The mechanisms for enhancement were explained by micromorphology, apparent contact angle , and roughness analyses, which could be utilized to guide the preparation of CF/PEEK-Ti hybrid laminates with interfacial reinforcement by MWCNTs. Besides, multiple failure modes occurred at the metal-composites interface including a mixed mode of interfacial and cohesive failures , and a large amount of PEEK and carbon fibers remaining on the surface of titanium sheet proved the excellent interlaminar properties of the hybrid laminates.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid layered perovskites (HLPs) have attracted extensive attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Herein, we successfully prepared high-quality Mn-doped BDACdBr4 (BDA = NH2(CH2)4NH2, butylene diammonium) HLP single crystals (SCs). The incorporation of Mn2+ ions modulates the electronic band structure of BDACdBr4 perovskites and tailors the energy transfer process of excited states. A near-unity photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 96% from the Mn2+ emission at 608 nm is achieved. Excitation wavelength-dependent spectroscopic characterizations help to clarify the energy transfer mechanism of Mn-doped BDACdBr4, in which competing PL from the 3Eg → 1A1g transition of Cd2+ and the 4T1(G) → 6A1(S) transition of Mn2+ dopants is observed. Temperature-dependent PL spectroscopic characterizations indicate that the efficient energy transfer from BDACdBr4 perovskite host to Mn2+ dopants requires thermal activation to overcome a potential barrier. This work provides new insight into the photophysics and optical properties of 2D HLPs, especially the influence of Mn2+ doping on competing energy transfer in hybrid luminescent materials.

The activation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) is responsible for degradation of the hybrid layer . The effect of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) on biodegradation of the hybrid layer remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of 10-MDP and its Ca salt on MMP-9 activity and dentin-bonding durability. 10-MDP-Ca salt was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The effects of chlorhexidine (CHX), 10-MDP, and 10-MDP-Ca salt on MMP activity were evaluated by in-situ zymography, MMP-9 inhibition assay, and hydroxyproline (HYP) assay. Dentin-resin bonded specimens were fabricated with using CHX or 10-MDP, including Single Bond 2 (Ctr), CHX + Single Bond 2 (CHX), 10-MDP + Single Bond 2 (10-MDP), and SBU (SBU). Micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) and nanoleakage tests were performed after 24-h or two-years water storage. XRD and NMR confirmed the presence of 10-MDP-Ca salt. The relative inhibition percentages of recombinant MMP-9 for 10-MDP and 10-MDP-Ca salt were 8.04 ± 0.83% and 55.96 ± 1.82% respectively. HYP assay showed that 10-MDP, CHX, and 10-MDP-Ca salt conditioning decreased collagen degradation. Water storage weakened μTBS of all the groups, with the Ctr and CHX groups showing more significant decreases ( P < 0.05). After aging, the Ctr and CHX groups also presented more nanoleakage, and the CHX group showed more in-situ zymography fluorescence than the 10-MDP and SBU groups. The capacity to inhibit MMP-9 activity, decrease HYP release, and reduce nanoleakage of 10-MDP and its salt contribute to improvement of dentin-bonding durability.
