The protein structure, gel changes, and chewing properties of low-sodium myofibrillar protein (MP) prepared by compound chloride salts (KCl/MgCl 2 , KCl/CaCl 2 , and KCl/MgCl 2 /CaCl 2 ) and different substitution degrees (10%, 25%, and 40%) at same ionic strength (0.6 M) were investigated. The results revealed that the low-sodium MP gels containing CaCl 2 manifested more liquid loss and less moisture content accompanied by obvious morphological shrinkage, while KCl/MgCl 2 contributed to the gel juiciness. At high substitution degree of 40%, KCl/CaCl 2 substitution rendered the gel with dense structure and highest strength, but worse water retention capacity. Using other compound chloride salts influenced the chewing efficiency, and CaCl 2 substitution made the gel relatively hard to chew. The inhomogeneous structure accompanied by cluster blocks in KCl/CaCl 2 -substituted MP gel accelerated the overall fracture rate. During heating process, more proteins in CaCl 2 -substituted MP did not participate in gel formation, intervening the final gel properties. The chloride salt mixtures containing MgCl 2 , rather than CaCl 2 , avoided or alleviated the liquid loss and shrinkage of low-sodium MP gel within the substitution degree of 10%–40%, and substitution degree not exceeding 25% was more reasonable for the controlled qualities.

The use of a mixed-salt substrate (sodium chloride-choline bromide-1-ethyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium bromide; molar ratio: 1:1:1) has been proposed for hydrodistillation of essential oils. Tree peony ‘Taiping Hong’ (Paeoniaceae), a cultivated essential oil-bearing plant, was investigated. After using the salt substrate, distillation time decreased from 140 to 40 min, essential oil yield increased from 0.48 % to 0.69 % and the pseudo-first-order rate constant increased from 0.0233 to 0.123 min-1. Potential mechanisms are (1) osmosis effect and hydrogen-bond interactions, which improve cell wall rupture; (2) the increase in polarity of aqueous distillation media, which prevents emulsification. The essential oil composition was influenced by an increase in oxygenated compound content (32.9 % to 49.0 %) and a decrease in hydrocarbon content (65.3 % to 49.6 %). Furan linalool oxide (cis and trans), linalool and α-terpineol contents increased by 400 %, 250 % and 200 %, respectively. (E,E)-α-farnesene, α-muurolene and octadecane contents decreased by 50 %, 46 % and 38 %, respectively. Possible mechanisms are: (1) improved cell rupture, which significantly facilitates extraction of oxygenated compounds; (2) hydrogen bonding with oxygenated compounds, which enhances their transfer from the inside of cells to bulk solution; (3) salting-out effect, which decreases dissolution of oxygenated compounds and improves their distillation. The essential oil obtained was mainly composed of phloroglucinol trimethyl ether (21.9 %), nerol (10.2%), tricosane (9.1 %), nonadecane (9.0 %), α-muurolene (5.0 %) and furan linalool oxides (3.0 %). Target prediction analysis indicated that it has potential applications in aromatherapy. In conclusion, the use of the mixed-salt substrate combined with hydrodistillation can result in efficient isolation of essential oils.

The rising prominence of energy security and climate change issues necessitates the advancement of sustainable energy development and energy storage technologies. Enhancing the capabilities of mesoporous composite phase change materials (CPCMs) has gained considerable research interest. CPCM’s heat storage and release performance is largely determined by its thermal conductivity. While the existing literature has documented the individual effects of the composition ratio of mixed molten salts, scale effects, and interfacial effects on thermal conductivity, no studies have been found that investigate the competitive interplay among these three factors with respect to their impact on thermal conductivity. This study aims to gain a deeper insight into the thermal conductivity changes of CPCM consisting of mixed molten salts as the phase change material (PCM) and mesoporous skeleton. A combination of molecular dynamics simulations and experimental investigations was employed to explore how interface effects, scale effects, and the proportion of mixed salts contribute to the thermal conductivity of CPCM. The findings indicate that augmented thermal conductivity, resulting from interface effects, supersedes the diminishing effects of interionic interactions. Compared to mixed salt ratios, interface effects primarily result in variations in the thermal conductivity of CPCM. The thermal conductivity of mixed nitrates escalates alongside scale increases. In the 3–4 nm range, the scale effect and mixed nitrate proportions do not notably compete in terms of influence on thermal conductivity, interface effects are more profound than scale effects. In the 4–9.5 nm range, the scale effect is more profound than mixed nitrate ratios. If the skeleton transitions from SiO 2 to Al 2 O 3 , the impact of the interface effect on thermal conductivity is greater influential than the scale effect. While transitioning the interface from Al 2 O 3 to ceramic, the effect of the interface is less than or equal to that of the scale effect on the thermal conductivity.

A green ternary (NaCl/KCl/ZnCl 2 ) mixed salt-assisted carbonization of spirulina residues was proposed to produce the nitrogen-doped biochar (NBC) with a hierarchical porous structure for the application of supercapacitors . Modifying the ratio of mixed salt to residues and the carbonization temperature allows it to control the specific surface area (SSA) of biochars, the type and content of functional groups, and the graphitization of the carbon skeleton. Here, the eco-friendly mixed salt functioned for a multifunctional purpose by acting as both a pore regulating agent and the reaction medium. The optimal 650–5 sample, produced by a reaction temperature of 650 °C and ratio of 5, exhibited remarkable specific capacitance of 215 F/g and 207 F/g at 0.2 A/g in 1 M H 2 SO 4 and 6 M KOH electrolytes, respectively, and the composed symmetrical capacitors showed excellent cycling stability in the four aqueous electrolytes (plus 1 M Na 2 SO 4 and 15 mol/kg LiTFSI), with capacitance retention rate all ≥90 % after 10,000 cycles. In the LiTFSI system, the energy density was 25.28 Wh/kg at 375.04 W/kg. Furthermore, experiments using recycled salt confirmed the sustainability of this approach.

The discharge of discarded organic phases often carries the risk of polluting the environment. The recycling and utilization of organic phases can reduce the negative impact on the environment and the consumption of natural resources. This manuscript reports a method for preparing biomass porous carbon using discarded mungbean pods and applying it to capacitive deionization (CDI) technology for organic phase regeneration. During the preparation process, porous carbon was prepared using potassium carbonate as an activator, NaCl/KCl mixed salt as a template and flux, and dopamine as a nitrogen source. The biomass-graded porous carbon prepared has a high specific surface area (2862.36 m 2 g −1 ), rich pore structure, and good electrochemical performance (specific capacitance of 480.5 F g −1 at a current density of 1A g −1 ), making it suitable for ion adsorption and desorption processes in CDI technology. The CDI regeneration extraction organic phase experiment verified that the extraction ability of the regenerated extracted organic phase of the material in the extraction experiment can reach 99.6% of that of the fresh extractant. The results indicate that biomass-graded porous carbon has high ion adsorption capacity and good regeneration performance, which can achieve the recycling of organic phase.

Supercritical water oxidation efficiently degrades organic waste but faces challenges from salt deposition due to the low solubilities of salts in supercritical water (SCW). This study investigated the characteristics and mechanisms of dissolution and deposition of mixed sulfate and chloride salts in SCW. At low water densities the common ion effect was observed in Na 2 SO 4 /K 2 SO 4 mixtures. Na + tended to occupy the junctions between SO 4 2- , while K + tended to occupy the cluster endings. Due to the weaker electrostatic interaction between K + (with larger ionic radius) and SO 4 2- , large and medium-sized clusters were more prone to decomposition in K + -rich solutions. K 2 SO 4 induced a “salting-in” effect on Na 2 SO 4 , whereas Na 2 SO 4 exerted a “salting-out” effect on K 2 SO 4 at high water densities. Both sulfates exhibited heterogeneous nucleation, depositing on heated sidewalls as nucleation sites, with Na 2 SO 4 proving more difficult to remove than K 2 SO 4 . In KCl/Na 2 SO 4 mixtures, homogeneously nucleated chloride salts created many preferential nucleation sites for Na 2 SO 4 deposition.
