Environmental pollution and clean water production are challenges to the development of human society. In this paper, devices consisting of a superhydrophobic Ni-CoFe2O4foam layer (floating layer), a hydrophilic channel and a superhydrophilic Ni-CoFe2O4foam layer (photothermal conversion layer) were designed. The light energy was converted into heat on the photothermal layer, for which the hydrophilic channel provided a small amount of water. The superhydrophobic layer ensured the floating and selective adsorption of organic solvents on the water surface, whose contact angle reached 157°, and the steam production rate reached 1.68 kg·m−2·h−1. Finally, the LSV curve demonstrated that the Ni-CoFe2O4foam prepared had a minimum starting potential, achieving the multifunctionality of the Ni foam. Keywords:superhydrophobic;oil–water separation;clean water production

Current problems of existing heavy metal-removing technologies, especially for nanomaterials-based ones, are typically single metal ion-specific, high-cost and collected difficult. Herein, facile modification of commercial sulfur creates a versatile adsorbent platform to address challenges. The versatile adsorbent can be easily prepared through solvothermal treatment of a saturated commercial sulfur solution, followed by water precipitation on a commercial foam that eliminates the need for separation. Interestingly, the solvothermal treatment endows the resulting nanosulfur with sulfate acid groups (hard Lewis base), sulfur anions (soft base), and sulfite groups (borderline base), promising the coordination of all types of heavy metal ions (Lewis acids). As such, this versatile adsorbent with well-distributed adsorption sites exhibits highly effective heavy metal adsorption capacity towards diverse heavy metal ions for both single-component and multi-component adsorption, including soft, hard, borderline Lewis metal ions, with ultra-high adsorption ability (e.g., 903.79 mg g −1 for Cu 2+ ). These findings highlighted the potential of this low-cost sulfur-based adsorbent to address the arising challenges in ensuring clean water.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation co-generation (SDIE-CG) technology can effectively solve problems such as low latent heat utilization in the evaporation process, which provides a reliable solution to the problem of hydropower shortage in remote areas. Herein, we report a tea residue microcrystalline cellulose (TMCC) aerogel (abbreviated as TCA), in which TMCC is regenerated by dissolution through the co-solvent method, and microcrystalline cellulose is rearranged by the directional slow freezing technique to get a TCA with a directional aligned pore structure, resulting in a good mechanical and salt-resistant property. Due to the internal doping of carbon black particles, the TCA has an average ultra-high absorbance of 97.46 %. The evaporation rate of TCA is up to 3.066 kg m −2 h −1 under 3 kW m −2 illuminations. The maximum output voltage of the TCA is 44.801 mV under 2 kW m −2 illuminations through the introduction of a suitable wind-assisted hydropower generation device. In addition, the TCA can effectively purify the wastewater containing traditional Chinese medicine, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) value in wastewater shows a significant decrease after treatment. It is worth noting that TCA can maintain structural integrity and stable evaporation performance in saltwater under extreme pH conditions (2

Solar interfacial water evaporation based on photothermal materials presents great potential in tackling global water scarcity and environmental pollution. However, existing photothermal materials still suffer from performance deficiencies like insufficient evaporation rate and unreliable long-term stability, as well as single-function limitations leading to incomplete removal of contaminants from wastewater, severely hindering their practical applications. Herein, we develop a novel, cost-effective, highly porous hydrogel composite integrated with synchronous photothermal and photocatalytic effects by a facile two-step immobilization approach. This method involves an initial sonication-induced pre-polymerization of acrylamide to produce a viscous solution that uniformly disperses TiO 2 nanoparticles and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), followed by a secondary in-situ free radical polymerization to achieve stable homogeneous TiO 2 /SWCNTs/polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel composite with an ultrahigh porosity of 88.40 %. Remarkably, the resultant hydrogel composite simultaneously exhibits excellent bifunctional photothermal and photocatalytic performances, including exceptional sunlight absorption of 99.35 %, high evaporation rate of 3.53 kg m −2 h −1 , and high photodegradation efficiency of 84.27 % for methylene blue. Furthermore, the water evaporator fabricated with such hydrogel demonstrates consistent desalination performance over 40-day continuous monitoring with salt ion removal rates over 95 %, positioning it as a promising bifunctional material for coherent sewage purification and clean water generation.

Human industrial activities have led to increasing pollution to the oceans and seas, resulting in significant changes in local marine environments. In this paper, an interface evaporation system based on superhydrophobic silicone aerogel and polypyrrole-fixed carbon nanotubes was developed. The water contact angle (WCA) of the superhydrophobic layer reached 160.5°, which showed good water-repellent property. Importantly, the floating layer had the effects of oil/water mixture and emulsion separation. In addition, to balance the efficient steam production flux and stability, the strategy of polypyrrole-fixed carbon nanotubes was proposed, generating the steam speed of 1.49 kg•m −2 •h −1 . In general, the novel evaporator enables clean steam production in the presence of salt, floating solvents and soluble dyes, achieving environmental remediation.

The scarcity of fresh water resources necessitates us to develop an efficient technique for sustainable production of clean water from seawater and wastewater. Here, we constructed the 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA (polyaniline) as a photothermal material for purification of seawater and wastewater to produce clean water through interfacial evaporation by virtue of sunlight. 1 T-MoS 2 has a higher evaporation capacity of water than 2 H-MoS 2 , which was selected to prepare 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite for photothermal conversion. As expected, 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite offers a higher evaporation rate of water than both 1 T-MoS 2 and PDA , which owes to an excellent light absorbance, low light reflectance and good wettability . Under irradiation of 1 sun, the evaporation rate of water over the 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite in pure water reached 1.51 kg m −2 h −1 , and the photothermal conversion efficiency reached 92%. Encouragingly, 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite can be well used to treat real seawater and various wastewater such as organic dye solution and heavy metal ion solution, in which the evaporation rate of water is close to pure water, and the quality of water is better than the standard of drinking water established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Besides, 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite still maintain an excellent evaporation performance after treatment of acidic solution and alkaline solution, indicating an excellent durability. This work provides a feasible solution for producing clean water by solar-driven interfacial evaporation from seawater and wastewater.

Interfacial evaporation is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to obtain clean water. However, organic pollutants, especially volatile organic compounds (VOCs), can enter the vapor with solar drive and ultimately remain in the condensed water, significantly affecting the widespread application of solar-driven interfacial evaporation. In this study, a 3D interfacial evaporator, designed based on laser induced porous graphene and photocatalysts, has been developed to achieve high evaporation rates and excellent organic compound decomposition simultaneously, thereby obtaining clean water resources. The nano photocatalysts are introduced into porous graphene through hydrothermal and laser induced transfer technology. Due to the excellent photothermal performance of laser induced graphene and the 3D design of device, the solar driven evaporation efficiency of the interfacial evaporator can reach to 2.13 kg m −2 h −1 under 1.0 solar illumination. Moreover, thanks to the outstanding degradation performance of nano-TiO 2 , the device can decompose more than 97 % of organic pollutants (Rhodamine B and Methylene Blue) under 90 min of 1 solar illumination. Furthermore, the decomposition efficiency can reach 99.8 % under 6 h of real solar radiation. Therefore, this device can sustainably provide clean water resources in an environmentally friendly manner, especially designed for economically challenged.

Solar interfacial evaporation (SIE) is a prospective technology to overcome global freshwater shortages, but most current solar interfacial evaporators fail to treat fecal wastewater due to the presence of unpleasant volatile odors. Herein, a functional solar interfacial evaporator was developed to efficiently remove volatile fecal odors by integrating solar interfacial evaporation with Fenton oxidation in a continuous capillary-driven siphon mode. The evaporation interface was prepared by sequentially loading β-FeOOH and polydopamine-modified reduced graphene oxide (PDA-RGO) on a hydrophilic nonwoven substrate as the Fenton catalyst and photothermal material for simultaneous removal of pollutants during evaporation. Significantly, the prepared evaporator achieved a 100 % removal rate for volatile fecal odors and good removal efficiency of other organic pollutants in condensate and percolate, which was 7.29 times than that of the sole solar interfacial evaporator (13.7 %). Meanwhile, the unique capillary-driven siphon mode allowed continuous production of clean condensate and percolate without volatile fecal odors maintaining excellent stability in fifteen cycles. This development is considered to provide a feasible strategy for purifying wastewater to supply potable water without volatile fecal odors by using solar interfacial evaporation.

Solar steam generation and photocatalytic degradation have been regarded as the most promising techniques to address clean water scarcity issues. Although enormous efforts have been devoted to exploring high-efficiency clean water generation, many challenges still remain in terms of single decontamination function, relatively low efficiency, and inability to practical application. Herein, we first report the bioinspired fabrication of black titania (BT) nanocomposites with moth-eye-like nanostructures on carbon cloth for solar-driven clean water generation through solar steam generation and photocatalytic degradation. The moth-eye-like BT nanoarrays can largely prolong the effective propagation path of absorbing light and enhance the scattering of light, thereby exhibiting outstanding light absorption of 96% in the full spectrum. Such hierarchical-nanostructured BT nanocomposites not only impressively achieve solar steam efficiency of 94% under a simulated light of 1 kW m–2 but also show the prominent performance of desalination and steam generation in real life condition. In addition, 96% of rhodamine B is degraded using BT nanocomposites as a photocatalyst in 100 min. The moth-eye-like bioinspired designing concept and bifunctional applications in this study may open up a new strategy for maximizing solar energy utilization and clean water generation.

A novel carbon nitride based self-cleaning hydrogel photocatalyst (KI-PCN gel, potassium and iodine co-doped carbon nitride confined in alginate) has been successfully constructed by a facile method. Fabricated photocatalyst showed enhanced synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic degradation property on a high concentration of methylene blue (HMB) because of enhanced carrier separation efficiency and improved light adsorption capacity of KI-PCN. As expected, the KI-PCN gel showed the highest apparent rate constant value ( K app =0.0310 min −1 ), which was about 38.8 and 5.8 times as that of blank hydrogel ( K app =0.0008 min −1 ) and PCN gel ( K app =0.0053 min −1 ), respectively. Meanwhile, KI-PCN gel can continuously adsorb low concentration of MB (LMB), and the MB-adsorbed KI-PCN gel can self-clean under light irradiation. The bench-scale experiments simulating real river showed that KI-PCN gel can effectively and continuously remove LMB (0.1–20 ppm), indicating the possibility for the removal of contaminants in natural rivers. Furthermore, the possible degradation pathways were proposed by combining the density functional calculations (DFT) and intermediates identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). This work proposed a new perspective to acquire a novel self-cleaning and easily recyclable photocatalyst for treatment of wide concentration range organic wastewater as well as remediation of natural waterbody.

Reusing polluted water through various decontamination techniques has appeared as one of the most practical approaches to address the global shortage of clean water. Rather than relying on single decontamination mechanism, herein we report the preparation and utilization of paper-based composites for multifunctional solar-driven clean water generation that is inspired by the multiple water purification approaches in biological systems. The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets within such composites can efficiently remove organic contaminants through physical adsorption mechanism. Under solar irradiation, the floating rGO composites can instantly generate localized heating, which not only can directly generate clean water through distillation mechanism but also significantly enhance adsorption removal performance with the assistance of upward vapor flow. Such porous-structured paper-based composites allow for facile incorporation of photocatalysts to regenerate clean water out of contaminated water with combined adsorption, photodegradation, and interfacial heat-assisted distillation mechanisms. Within a homemade all-in-one water treatment device, the practical applicability of the composites for multifunctional clean water generation has been demonstrated.

As one of the ways to comprehensively utilize solar energy, solar-driven interfacial evaporation displays promising opportunities to alleviate both freshwater and energy shortages. However, there is always a partial impairment of solar energy utilization during evaporation, and its operation is stagnant without sunlight. In this study, a novel asymmetric evaporator is designed that achieves the maximum utilization of solar energy for clean water and power output by two-step asymmetric filtration of reduced graphene oxide/FeOOH (RGO/FeOOH)-based composites and graphene oxide (GO) on a mixed cellulose ester membrane (MCE). Under one solar irradiation , the RGO/FeOOH-based asymmetric evaporator can achieve an average output power of 51.33 mW m −2 synchronously with efficient solar evaporation. The output voltage can reach up to 640 mV with a current of approximately 84.8 μA. Furthermore, the average output power of this evaporator is 26.96 mW m −2 under ambient conditions. A light-emitting diode (LED) can be successfully lit via a series connection of electricity generators. The RGO/FeOOH-based asymmetric evaporator can function full-time with only solar energy and water, demonstrating the potential to generate steam and electricity simultaneously in sunlight; the findings also show its value as a generator on cloudy days or at night. Moreover, the RGO/FeOOH-based composites also show the photocatalytic degradation capabilities of organic pollutants in water. The simple fabrication strategy and superior thermal and electrical performance of the solution indicate that these novel RGO/FeOOH-based composites can be used for power generation , energy storage and brine and wastewater purification to achieve the maximum utilization of resources.
