The study of how to remove the ineffective conservation materials without damaging the mural's surface has been one of the hot issues of modern conservation science, and the reversibility problem of mural protective materials needs to be resolved instantly. In this article, we measured the reversible rates of 4 typical protective agents both on glazed tiles and model samples of Dunhuang murals, and used 3D microscopic system to observe the removal effect. The experimental results show that the cleaning agents should not contain water considering the water-soluble binding material of Dunhuang murals. All conservation materials are reversible, but their reversibilities are different. We obtained the best pairs of “conservation material-cleaning agent”, which are “silicone-acrylic emulsion-p-xylene + propylene carbonate”, “acrylic emulsion-p-xylene”, “polyvinyl acetate emulsion-p-xylene + ethyl acetate” and “Paraloid B72-p-xylene + propylene carbonate”. It is also found that the reversible rate of conservation materials declines after aging.

Petroleum hydrocarbons as pervasive pollutants pose a significant threat to soil ecology and human health. Surfactant washing as an established technique can effectively remediate soils contaminated by hydrocarbons. Biosurfactants, which combine the properties of surfactants and environmental compatibility, have attracted increasing interest. However, due to the high production cost of biosurfactants, their practical application is restricted. This study addressed these limitations by selecting two biosurfactants, β-cyclodextrin (C1) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (C2), and developed a promising cleaning agent formula through compounding and the addition of suitable additives. When the volume ratio of C1 to C2 was 8:2 and an 8 g/L mixture of sodium humate and sodium carbonate electrolyte was added, the surfactant system’s surface tension reached a minimum, yielding optimal oil removal. The formation and synergistic behaviour of mixed micelles of surfactants were explained using ideal solution theory and the Rubingh model. By optimising the oil washing process parameters – normal temperature of 25 °C, pH 11, washing time of 2 h, solid–liquid ratio of 1:5, and oscillation frequency of 200 r/min – the oil removal rate achieved 76%. This cleaning agent, characterised by low production cost, straightforward application, environmental compatibility, and rapid, significant cleaning effect, shows potential for field-scale purification of petroleum-contaminated soil.

Carvacrol, a natural plant compound with antibacterial, antioxidant, and various biological activities, serves as the basis for developing a micro-emulsion fruit and vegetable cleaner. The study found that carvacrol demonstrated a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging between 0.25 and 0.5 mg/mL against four foodborne pathogenic bacteria and three spoilage fungi. The formulated cleaner, containing 67 mg/mL of carvacrol, demonstrated superior characteristics (a particle size of 228 nm, an absolute zeta potential of 21.4 mv, and a stability coefficient of 91.2%). Remarkably, the cleaner remained stable when stored at room temperature for at least 3 months. Its efficacy against pesticides ranged from 76% to 91%. The cleaning effectively inhibited microbial colonies and the decay rate of cherry tomatoes during storage at 4 °C. Furthermore, the cleaning treatment was found to minimize changes in color and hardness. Overall, this study provides evidence that a fruit and vegetable cleaner based on carvacrol enhances the safety of the food industry effectively.

Oil from offshore oil spills may be stranded on beaches and exist for decades, requiring appropriate cleaning agents to adequately remove it. Herein, a phosphorylated cellulose nanocrystals (PCNCs) −Tween80 composite cleaning agent was developed by adding trace amounts of nonionic surfactant Tween80. Through the synergistic interaction of various components, the cleaning agent exhibited high oil removal efficiencies for the oiled sand at 25 ℃ and sea salt concentration of 3.5 wt%. The difference among the oil removal efficiencies of cleaning agents containing different components was mainly attributed to variations in the interfacial tension and the zeta potential. The oil removal efficiencies of the cleaning agent for contaminated sand containing engine oil were 81.2 % and 91.4 % at the cleaning speeds of 150 rpm and 300 rpm, respectively. Surprisingly, the composite cleaning agent reached an oil removal efficiency of 89.9 % at just 150 rpm for the real-world polluted system of the sand contaminated with crude oil. At a relatively mild cleaning speed of 150 rpm, the cleaning effect exceeded those reported in most previous studies at 300 rpm. Furthermore, the washing wastewater achieved rapid and efficient oil/water separation under flocculation of using polyaluminum chloride, which was expected to significantly reduce the discharge of wastewater and avoid secondary pollution. This work has developed a PCNCs-based cleaning agent with advantages of high efficiency, environment-friendliness, convenient preparation, low cost, and low discharge of wastewater, which can efficiently remove oil from oiled sand.
