Temperature-dependent water retention and bleeding of fresh cement-based materials with VEAs

Linan Gu,Tiejun Liu,Kai Wu,Zhenghong Yang,Zhaoyin Wen,Zhenlei Zhang,Haoxin Li

It is still uncertain whether temperature exerts some influence on the water retention (WR) and bleeding of cement-based materials with viscosity-enhancing admixtures (VEAs). Thus, WR and bleeding of cement-based materials with selected VEAs, such as sodium polyacrylate (PANA), hydroxyethoxy methoxy cellulose (HEMC) and hydroxypropoxy methoxy cellulose (HPMC), were evaluated at 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 °C, and experiments on the apparent viscosity , total organic carbon (TOC) content, hydrodynamic radius and thermogravimetry were carried out to explore the responsible mechanisms. The results show that VEAs enhance WR and reduce bleeding at room temperature to varying degrees. However, this improvement at higher temperature does not occur as at room temperature (20 °C). The decreased improvements in WR and bleeding at higher temperature are associated with the lowered apparent viscosity , TOC content, hydrodynamic radius and the increased cement hydration . Below 40 °C, the apparent viscosity, adsorption and hydrodynamic radius dominate the bleeding behaviour of mortars with HPMC and HEMC. However, accelerated cement hydration is mainly responsible for the behaviour when the temperature exceeds 40 °C.

Spontaneous water oozing of a soft drain bed via energy-free atmospheric water harvesting

Yang-Hui Luo,Xue-Ting Jin,Min Liu,Si-Wei Sun,Jie Zhao

Atmospheric water harvesting has emerged as an efficient strategy for addressing the global challenge of freshwater scarcity. However, the in being energy-consuming water-collecting process has obstructed its practicality. In this work, a soft drain bed, which was composed of hydrophilic cloth and hygroscopic gel, has been demonstrated to capture atmospheric water effectively, followed by converting it into liquid water spontaneously and sustainably, under all-weather humidity conditions. Under the optimal working condition of 30°C with a relative humidity level of 75%, the bed can provide a spontaneous water oozing ability of 1.25 g (liquid water) /hour within the 8 h of working time. More importantly, after 5 working cycles, 80% of the oozing ability can be reserved, suggesting the high potential for practical freshwater supply application. The proposed design strategy is expected to provide new hints for the development of future energy-saving decentralized freshwater supply systems.

Extracellular-matrix-mimicked 3D nanofiber and hydrogel interpenetrated wound dressing with a dynamic autoimmune-derived healing regulation ability based on wound exudate

Liheng Gao,Xingxing Liu,Wenshuo Zhao,Chaojin Li,Fujun Wang,Jing Gao,Xinqin Liao,Lei Wei,Hao Wu,Yuanjin Zheng,Lu Wang

Dynamic regulation of wound physiological signals is the basis of wound healing. Conventional biomaterials delivering growth factors to drive wound healing leads to the passive repair of soft tissues because of the mismatch of wound healing stages. Meanwhile, the bioactivity of wound exudate is often restricted by oxidation and bacterial contamination. Herein, an extracellular matrix mimicked nanofiber/hydrogel interpenetrated network (NFHIN) was constructed with a 3D nanofibrous framework for cell immigration, and interfiled aerogel containing cross-linked hyaluronic acid and hyperbranched polyamidoamine to balance the wound microenvironment. The aerogel can collect wound exudate and transform into a polycationic hydrogel with contact-killing effects even against intracellular pathogens (bactericidal rate > 99.9% in 30 min) and real-time scavenging property of reactive oxygen species. After co-culturing with the NFHIN, the bioactivity of fibroblast in the ex vivo blister fluid was improved by 389.69%. The NFHIN showed sustainable exudate management with moisture–vapor transferring rate (6000 g m−2 ×24 h), equilibrium liquid content (75.3%), Young's modulus (115.1 ± 7 kPa), and anti-tearing behavior similar to human skin. The NFHIN can collect and activate wound exudate, turning it from a clinical problem to an autoimmune-derived wound regulation system, showing potential for wound care in critical skin diseases.

Crosslinked carboxymethyl starch nanofiber mats: Preparation, water resistance and exudates control ability

Zhili Luan,Hui Zhang,Junli Hu,Jiantao Zhang,Yichun Liu

The highly hydrophilic carboxymethyl starch (CMS) is promising for exudates control of highly exuding wounds. Its water intolerance hindered its application as wound dressings. This research has developed a new type of nanofiber mat with high hydrophilicity and water-resistance. The electrospun CMS nanofiber mats were crosslinked with the periodate oxidation – adipic acid dihydrazide crosslinking strategy. The crosslinked CMS nanofiber mats show wet mechanical strength between 1 and 5 MPa, can maintain good nanofibrous morphology and 90% of their initial mass after being incubated in simulated body fluid for 4 weeks, and have good biocompatibility. As wound dressings, they can evaporate exudates at speed between 0.30 and 0.34 g/(cm 2 ·24 h) and absorb 10–20 times exudates rapidly. The crosslinked CMS nanofiber mats are promising dressings for the treatment of highly exuding wounds.

Aggregation of positively charged polystyrene nanoplastics in soil–root systems

Chen Jiao,Ma Ruoxin,Shi Qingdong,Mei Aoxue,Xu Zijun

The occurrence of nanoplastics in agricultural land is a potential threat to human health and food security, yet the fate of nanoplastics is soil–root systems is poorly known. Here we investigated the aggregation behavior of polystyrene nanoplastics bearing different charges in cucumber root exudates and soil leachate, and in the presence of common environmental Ca 2+ ions. Results show an increase in the aggregation size of positively charged amino-modified polystyrene nanoplastics, whereas negatively charged nanoplastics did not aggregate and showed no significant changes in particle size. This is possibly due to the adsorption of organic acids from soil leachates and root exudates onto the surfaces of nanoparticles. We observed that the critical condensation concentrations of Ca 2+ for negatively charged nanoplastics increased by more than 1.4 times in root exudates and soil leachates compared with that in deionized water. Our findings suggest that root exudates and soil leachates can reduce the aggregation of negatively charged nanoplastics in Ca 2+ solutions.

Chronic wound management: a liquid diode-based smart bandage with ultrasensitive pH sensing ability

Wang Xueqi,Cheng Jing,Wang Han

Chronic wounds, which require prolonged healing periods, pose significant impacts on individuals with diabetes, vascular diseases, and high blood pressure. Simultaneous drainage and monitoring of wound exudate are vital for advanced wound management. However, recently reported smart dressings either lack integration of wound cleaning and monitoring functions or fail to achieve dynamic in situ monitoring of wound status, which hinders their ability to meet the demands of wound care. In this study, a smart bandage is introduced, which integrates a biocompatible liquid diode membrane with an ultrasensitive 3D polyaniline mesh (M-PANI)-based pH biosensor. The smart bandage allows for unidirectional drainage of wound exudate while dynamically sensing the wound pH environment. Specifically, the proposed smart bandage effectively cleans excessive wound exudate while providing real-time information on the wound status during the drainage process. The M-PANI-based pH biosensor demonstrates a high sensitivity of 61.5 mV/pH and a wide pH detection range from 4.0 to 10.0, encompassing the pH range of normal and infected wounds. Moreover, the sensing module exhibits excellent stability after 48 hours of dynamic testing and 28 days of storage, with only a 4.8% decline in the detected signal, and high repeatability with a device-to-device relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.1%. To evaluate the practicality of this smart bandage, simulated skin and rats have been employed, and the results indicate the immense potential of this smart bandage for clinical applications. In conclusion, the present smart bandage demonstrates considerable promise for wound exudate cleaning and monitoring in advanced wound care and offers a promising method for home-based wound management.

Effects of antibacterial coating on monomer exudation and the mechanical properties of denture base resins

Dan Feng,Haihuan Gong,Jiahui Zhang,Xiaowei Guo,Min Yan,Song Zhu

Statement of problem Denture base resin may be exposed to different conditions for long periods, resulting in the loss of monomer by exudation and a decrease in mechanical properties. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate monomer loss by exudation from denture base resins doped with antibacterial coatings and their mechanical properties after long-term water immersion. Material and methods Four kinds of dental base resin materials were used as experimental materials. The specimens of each resin were divided into an experimental group (coated) and a control group (uncoated). Monomer exudation was tested at 7 and 28 days by gas chromatography after materials were immersed in distilled water or a solution of 75% alcohol/distilled water. Flexural strength and elastic modulus were tested with a universal testing machine after immersion for 2 and 180 days. The surface morphology was characterized with atomic force microscopy . The data were analyzed using 3-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey-Kramer honest significant difference test (α=.05). Results In both of the immersion media, each of the 3 factors (materials, coating, and immersion time) significantly affected the monomer exudation ( P <.05). In addition, the interaction between any 2 of those factors or among the 3 factors had a significant interaction effect on the monomer exudation of the denture base ( P <.05). The mechanical properties of the tested materials were different, and the immersion time had a significant effect on the flexural properties ( P <.05). For flexural strength, a significant interaction effect occurred among the 3 factors (material, coating, and immersion time) ( P <.05). The coating has a significant effect on the elastic modulus of denture base resin ( P <.05) and on the interaction between the material and immersion time ( P <.05). Conclusions The silver-loaded mesoporous silica antibacterial coating can effectively reduce monomer exudation and enhance the flexural properties of denture base resin after immersion.

A Fully Integrated Wearable Biomimetic Microfluidic Wound Tracker for In Situ Dynamic Monitoring of Wound Exudate Oxygen

Wei Deng,Mimi Sun,Mengzhu Cao,Chong-Bo Ma,Xiangjie Bo,Jing Bai,Ming Zhou

Wearable wound exudate sensors hold great promise for providing dynamic measurements of valuable biomarkers. However, no existing sensors are able to achieve the fully integrated, skin-on, and dynamic detection of raw wound exudate oxygen (O2), which is closely related to wound conditions and also essential for wound healing. Here, we report a fully integrated wearable biomimetic microfluidic wound tracker, capable of skin-on biomimetic microfluidic wound exudate sampling, dynamic monitoring of wound exudate O2 in addition to wound exudate uric acid, lactate, pH, and temperature, and wireless control through the seamless integration of specially designed microfluidic, sensing, and electronic modules. We test the performance of the device in both bacterium-inoculated and uninoculated wounds using mouse models. We further assess its potential for wound management in the healing process of infected diabetic mouse wounds through controlled experiments related to local hyperbaric O2 treatment.

Construction and Performance Study of an Injectable Dual-Network Hydrogel Dressing with Inherent Drainage Function

Xiaoxiao Ma,Lizhi Lin,Kelin Peng,Qianqian Zheng,Yongqiang Feng,Yu Chen

With the widespread utilization of moist wound dressings, the extended healing time and increased risk of wound infection caused by excessively moist environments have garnered significant attention. The development of hydrogel dressings that can effectively control the wound moisture level and promote healing is very important. Inspired by the pore-opening perspiration effect of the skin, this study constructed an injectable dual-network hydrogel, CMCS-OSA/AG/MXene, by the composition of a dynamic covalent network of carboxymethyl chitosan and oxidized sodium alginate based on the Schiff base and hydrogen bond network of the thermosensitive low-melting-point agar with the advantage of the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) effect. Under near-infrared (NIR) light stimulation, the CMCS-OSA/AG/MXene hydrogel shows characteristics conducive to rapid removal of wound exudate while maintaining an appropriate moist environment for the wound and excellent antibacterial effects with its photothermal responses. The excellent conductivity of the hydrogel can also promote cell proliferation under external electrical stimulation (ES). Further validation through animal experiments on a full-thickness skin defect model demonstrates the excellent capability of CMCS-OSA/AG/MXene in accelerating wound healing. This work provides an innovative approach to the development of injectable hydrogel dressing materials with inherent drainage functionality and shows a new avenue to wound moisture control and wound healing promotion.

A wearable electrochemical sensor for the monitoring of neonicotinoid insecticides, salicylic acid and the pH in plant guttation

Guanglei Chu,Siping Yu,Yuhang Wang,Weifeng Zhang,Bing Xue,Jinqi Huang,Zhiwei Wang,Jianghe Luo,Xia Sun,Ming Li

Wearable plant sensors can continuously monitor the material absorption and health status of a plant, thereby providing data that can be used to provide precise crop management. Herein, we describe a noninvasive wearable electrochemical sensor designed for monitoring plant guttation that is capable of detecting trace levels of neonicotinoid insecticides, salicylic acid, and pH. The sensor electrodes are prepared using an improved laser-induced graphene (LIG) printing method, with which a single set (six sensors) can be fabricated in only 15.6 s. Leveraging the high surface area and conductivity of LIG, trace-level electrochemical testing for neonicotinoid insecticides, salicylic acid, and pH can be achieved without the need for electrode surface modification. When the sensors are combined with a guttation collection module, the repeated collection of the guttation fluid becomes possible. The sensor weighs only 0.1 g and can be connected to a portable electrochemical workstation and smartphone for real-time on-site data collection. The practical value of the sensor was validated by monitoring the guttation fluid produced by rice, placed under stress through the application of neonicotinoid insecticide, and real-time pH calibration. This noninvasive wearable sensor for monitoring plant guttation enables the real-time detection of target substances, avoids plant stress caused by sensor intrusion, and provides a new direction for the future development of wearable plant sensors.

Bioinspired nanofiber dressings with counter-transport of exudate and drug for treating heavily exuding wounds

Xuening Jin,Yihao Wu,Zizhao Chen,Zheng Chen,Fujin Zhou,Qishu Jin,Shuting Wu,Yanping Feng,Jianfeng Ma,Xiaohui Guo,Jiang Chang,Chen Yang,Botao Song

Heavily exuding wounds are difficult to heal due to the accumulation of a large amount of exudates and the difficulty in efficient delivery of drugs by conventional wound dressings. Herein, inspired by the microstructure and function of octopus sucker (OS) and tree trunk (TT), we propose a bioinspired strategy to fabricate novel bioinspired OS&TT bilayered wound dressing, assembled by a lower OS-like nanofiber membrane with concave convex arrays and an upper TT-like nanofiber sponge with vertically aligned pores. The integration of bioinspired concave arrays and vertically aligned pores endows the bioinspired OS&TT dressing with dual vertical suction property, enabling effective drainage of significant amount of accumulated liquid. Moreover, the bioinspired convex arrays facilitate distinct drug reverse delivery, achieving a drug delivery efficiency exceeding 88.27 %. In vivo heavily exuding wound treatment results indicate that, the bioinspired OS&TT dressing can alleviate tissue edema, decrease the contents of proinflammatory cytokines, and accelerate wound healing due to the unique dual vertical suction of exudates. When treating the bacteria-infected wound, benefiting from the reverse delivery of antimicrobial ε-polylysine to efficiently kill bacteria, the bioinspired OS&TT dressing shows a better wound healing effect than the dressing with inefficient drug delivery capacity.

Y-Shaping All Components in Waste Cooking Oil-Derived Epoxidized Fatty Acid Methyl Esters toward a Leaching-Resistant Bioplasticizer

Siyu Pan,Jun Yan,Xu Peng,Zhou Xu,Qi Zeng,Zhonghui Wang,Minzhong Zhao,Yi Chen

In the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) industry, waste cooking oil (WCO)-derived epoxidized fatty acid methyl esters (EFAMEs) represent a promising bio-alternative to conventional ortho-phthalate plasticizers that are being phased out due to their toxicity and nonrenewable nature. However, to improve the leaching resistance of EFAMEs, the WCO feedstock has to go through multistage distillation at particularly high temperatures under vacuum conditions for saturated component removal, resulting in intensive energy consumption, a significant waste of the feedstock, and a final bioplasticizer with a still faster leaching rate than those of ortho-phthalates. Here, we report a strategy that can Y-shape all components in WCO-derived EFAMEs with another short, polar ester chain via a nucleophilic substitution reaction of the feedstock mixture with dimethyl carbonate. This strategy entails no utilization of an energy-intensive procedure and, importantly, converts all components in the WCO feedstock into the final bioplasticizer. Relative to ordinary EFAMEs, the Y-shaped epoxidized fatty acid methyl diester exhibits a significantly suppressed leaching rate. Under certain scenarios, it even leaches at a rate equivalent to or slower than that of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), the most ubiquitously applied member of the ortho-phthalate family. With this strategy in hand, the renewable WCO may be converted into a high-performance bioplasticizer in an energy-efficient and atom-economic manner to support the phase-out of ortho-phthalates in the PVC industry.
