Electrochemical oxidation has been demonstrated to be a useful method for removing biorefractory organic pollutants in mature landfill leachate but suffers from low efficiency in eliminating ammonium because of its resistance to being oxidized by HO• or free chlorine (FC) at decreased pH. Here, we propose a new bipolar membrane-electrochlorination (BPM-EC) process to address this issue. We found that the BPM-EC system was significantly superior to both the undivided and divided reactors with monopolar membranes in terms of elevated rate of ammonium removal, attenuated generation of byproducts (e.g., nitrate and chloramines), increased Faradaic efficiency, and decreased energy consumption. Mechanistic studies revealed that the integration of BPM was helpful in creating alkaline environments in the vicinity of the anode, which facilitated production of surface-bound HO• and FC and eventually promoted in situ generation of ClO•, a crucial reactive species mainly responsible for accelerating ammonium oxidation and selective transformation to nitrogen. The efficacy of BPM-EC in treating landfill leachates with different ammonium concentrations was verified under batch and continuous-flow conditions. A kinetic model that incorporates the key parameters was developed, which can successfully predict the optimal number of BPM-EC reactors (e.g., 2 and 5 for leachates containing 589.4 ± 5.5 and 1258.1 ± 9.6 mg L–1 NH4+-N, respectively) necessary for complete removal of ammonium. These findings reveal that the BPM-EC process shows promise in treating ammonium-containing wastewater, with advantages that include effectiveness, adaptability, and flexibility.

This study rigorously assessed the efficacy of gas-permeable membrane (GPM) technologies in recovering ammonia from landfill leachate, focusing on polypropylene (PP) and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membranes within in-situ (INS) and shell-tube (ST) configurations. The research spanned an array of determinants, including influencing factors, sustained operational efficiency, fouling dynamics, and recovery product purity. It was established that the INS-ePTFE configuration demonstrated formidable recovery capabilities and durable performance after fouling cleaning, with ammonia removal efficiency resurging to its initial state and stabilizing at 93 % post-maintenance. In contrast, the ST-PP configuration experienced an unrecoverable drop in removal efficiency to 83 %. Fouling analysis indicated that ePTFE membranes retained structural stability against organic and inorganic deposition, with humic substances and metal carbonates as predominant constituents. Conversely, PP membranes exhibited a decline in hydrophobic properties and structural integrity upon contamination. Furthermore, pH elevation significantly enhanced ammonia nitrogen mass transfer coefficients without increasing osmotic water transfer in INS systems. The INS system also showed promise for synergistic phosphorus recovery within the pH of 9 to 10. Then, NO 3 – , SO 4 2- and humic acid did not impede ammonia translocation, whereas a 1.5 % mass fraction of Ca 2+ incurred a roughly 30 % reduction in ammonia mass transfer coefficients across each system. The recovery of high purity (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 attested to the exceptional retention capabilities of GPMs for organics and ions, with rejection rates surpassing 99.6 %. The comprehensive analysis underscored the operational superiority of the INS-ePTFE configuration in ammonia recovery.

Electrochemical technology is a promising technique for separating ammonia from mature landfill leachate . However, the accompanying migration and transformation of coexisting pollutants and strategies for further high-value resourceful utilization of ammonia have rarely received attention. In this study, an electrochemical separation- Rhodopseudomonas palustris electrolysis cell coupled system was initially constructed for efficient separation and conversion of nitrogen in mature landfill leachate to microbial protein with synchronously tracking the transport and conversion of coexisting heavy metals accompanying the process. The results revealed that ammonia concentration in the cathode increased from 40.3 to 49.8% with increasing the current density from 20 to 40 mA/cm 2 , with less than 3% of ammonia transformation to NO 2 − -N and NO 3 − -N. During ammonia separation, approximately 95% of HM-DOMs (Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were released into the anolyte due to humus degradation and further diffused to the cathode. A significant correlation was observed between the releases of HM-DOMs. Cu-DOMs accounted for 70.2% of the total Cu content, which was the highest proportion among the heavy metals (HMs). Among the HMs in anolyte, 57.4% of Pb, 52.5% of Ni, and 50.6% of Zn diffused to the cathode, and most of the HMs were removed in the form of hydroxide precipitations due to heavy alkaline catholyte . Compared with the open-circuit condition, the utilization efficiency of NH 4 + -N in the R. palustris electrolysis cell increased by 445.1% with 47% and 50% increases in final NH 4 + -N conversion rate and R. palustris biomass, respectively, due to bio-electrochemical enhanced phototrophic metabolism and acid generation for buffering the strong alkalinity of the electrolyte to maintain suitable growth conditions for R. palustris .

Leachate from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration harbors a plethora of contaminants, including antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the understanding of such leachate is markedly scant in comparison to that of landfill leachate. In this study, the distribution and removal of 8 sulfonamides (SAs), 4 quinolones (FQs), and 4 macrolides (MLs) antibiotics in leachate from 14 MSW incineration plants in representative cities across different regions of China were investigated. In addition, potential factors affecting the contamination levels of antibiotics and ARGs in fresh leachate were evaluated. The results showed that the total concentration of target antibiotics in fresh leachate ranged from 4406.1 to 14,930.6 ng/L. Notably, the antibiotic distribution in leachate exhibited regional disparities, influenced by economic status, climatic conditions, and waste separation policies. The absolute abundance of total ARGs ranged from 1.3 × 10 7 –4.0 × 10 8 copies/mL, with the mobile genetic elements intl1 facilitates the dissemination of qnrS, sul1 and sul2. No distinct regional distribution of the ARGs was observed among different cities. Antibiotic and ARGs distributions were significantly correlated with total organic carbon, pH, ammonia nitrogen, heavy metals, and microbial communities. Moreover, SAs were identified as contributors to the proliferation and spread of corresponding ARGs. Fourteen typical "anaerobic-anoxic/aerobic-anoxic/aerobic-ultrafiltration-nanofiltration " treatment processes removed the target antibiotics effectively (76.1 %-97.0 %). Biodegradation was considered to be the dominant antibiotic removal pathway, removing 62.0 %-90.9 % of antibiotics, while sludge adsorption removed only 1.0 %-11.7 %. This research furnishes valuable insights into the fate of antibiotics in MSW incineration leachate.

Herein, we report an integrated coagulation/ photo-Fenton (CPF) process for advanced treatment of mature landfill leachate using nascent aluminum ions as coagulant and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) as oxidant for Fenton reaction , which were in-situ produced by a novel chlorine and nitrogen co-doped aluminum-graphite (Cl, N-Al-Gr) composite. The coagulation of the MBR-treated landfill leachate was performed by nascent aluminum ions generated in Cl, N-Al-Gr/O 2 system; and the resulting coagulation effluent was treated by photo-Fenton oxidation in the presence of ultraviolet (UVA). The Cl, N-Al-Gr composite exhibited excellent performance for in-situ H 2 O 2 production (813.9 mg/L). The humic substances in landfill leachate could promote the cycle of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ , and the removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) and color was 88.1% and 97.6%, respectively under the optimized condition. The current study suggested that “coagulation + Fenton” process using nascent Al 3+ as coagulant and in-situ generated H 2 O 2 for Fenton oxidation could be a new way for wastewater treatment .

Leachate from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incineration plants contains multiple antibiotics. However, current knowledge of antibiotics in such leachate is very limited compared to landfill leachate . In this study, the distribution, removal and ecological risks of 8 sulfonamides (SAs), 4 quinolones (FQs), and 4 macrolides (MLs) antibiotics in leachate from three MSW incineration plants in Shanghai were investigated. The results showed that 12 types of target antibiotics were detected at high concentrations (7737.3–13,758.7 ng/L) in the fresh leachate, exceeding the concentrations reported for landfill leachate. FQs were the dominant antibiotics detected in all three fresh leachates, accounting for >60 % of the total detected concentrations. The typical “anaerobic-anoxic/aerobic-anoxic/aerobic-ultrafiltration” treatment process removed the target antibiotics effectively (89.0 %–93.4 %), of which the anaerobic unit and the primary anoxic/aerobic unit were the most important antibiotic removal units. Biodegradation was considered to be the dominant removal mechanism, removing 78.11 %–92.37 % of antibiotics, whereas sludge adsorption only removed 1.02 %–10.89 %. Antibiotic removal was significantly correlated with leachate COD , pH, TN, and NH 3 -N, indicating that they may be influential factors for antibiotic removal. Ecological risk assessment revealed that ofloxacin (OFX) and enrofloxacin (EFX) in the treated leachate still posed high risks to algae and crustaceans. This research provides insights into the fate of antibiotics in leachate.

The leachate from municipal solid waste transfer stations has a complex composition of pollutants, contains high concentrations of organic matter, and produces odors. The anaerobic digestion of leachate generates excessive volatile organic acids (VFAs), acidifying the digestate and destabilizing or even collapsing the anaerobic process. To solve these issues, we set up a facultative anaerobic system with air exposure and an obligate anaerobic system without air exposure to explore the impact of anaerobic degree on intermediate accumulation and anaerobic process stability. When the organic loading raised from 0.6 to 6.0 kg COD/(m3·d), VFA accumulation in the facultative system peaked at 3.30 g COD/L, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate dropped from 95% to 60%. By contrast, the obligate system remained stable, with VFA concentrations below 0.50 g COD/L and COD removal rates between 85% and 99%. Microbial sequencing shows that VFA-oxidizing bacteria enhanced VFA degradation, such asSyntrophomonasandSmithella, which increased from 4.62% and 0.76% in the facultative system to 17.64% and 0.88% in the obligate system, respectively. Coenzyme F420 concentration as an indicator of methanogenic activity was 50% higher in the obligate system. Therefore, an obligate anaerobic system is promising to alleviate acidification for stable anaerobic digestion of leachate. Keywords:anaerobic digestion;anaerobic degree;loading fluctuation;VFA accumulation;fresh leachate

Landfill leachate contains high levels of refractory organic compounds that pose significant environmental risks. The treatment of landfill leachate through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is an effective method for removing these compounds. However, the presence of chloride ions (Cl − ) might lead to the formation of chlorinated organics. In this study, we compared the formation of chlorinated organics during the removal of refractory organic compounds from landfill leachate treated by a membrane bioreactor (MBR) through UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PDS processes with different oxidant dosages. The relationship between the formation of chlorinated organics and the concentration of organics was explained via ultraviolet visible spectra, three-dimensional excitation and emission matrix spectra, and total organic carbon. The results revealed that the concentration of chlorinated organics increased with increasing oxidant dosage. Under the oxidant dosage of 40 mM and a reaction time of 90 min, the cumulative concentration of the 4 chlorinated organics in the UV/H 2 O 2 process reached 482.8 μg/L, and those of the 8 chlorinated organics reached 34,370.2 μg/L in the UV/PDS process. Concentrations of chloroacetaldehyde, chloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid produced in the UV/H 2 O 2 process and concentrations of chloroacetaldehyde, dichloroacetaldehyde and dichloroacetonitrile produced in the UV/PDS process were significantly and positively correlated with the concentrations of aromatic organic compounds. In the UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PDS processes, the concentration of Cl − affects the conversion of reactive chlorine species, such as Cl • and Cl 2 •– , and the reactive species, such as HO • , SO 4 •– , Cl • and Cl 2 •– generated in the process react with organic compounds to form intermediates through hydrogen extraction, addition and electron transfer processes that gradually open ring structures to form small molecules. Cl • and Cl 2 •– further react with these small-molecule intermediates to form chlorinated organics through chlorine substitution. The toxicity evaluation of chlorinated organics revealed that haloacetaldehydes were the main source of chlorinated organic toxicity in both the UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PDS processes. This study provides theoretical support for reducing the formation of chlorinated organics during refractory organic compound removal processes from landfill leachate via advanced oxidation processes such as UV/AOPs.

The leachate generated from the sanitary landfill or incineration poses serious environmental threats and it's difficultly disposed due to its complexity containing high concentration of organic matters and inorganic salts etc. Membrane technology stands out as a potential solution for leachate because of its beneficial advantages. Nanofiltration (NF) can reject organic compounds and separate divalent ions from mixed salts, which alleviates fouling and increases separation efficiency and flux of reverse osmosis (RO) in the popular combined processes (MBR-NF/RO) applicable for leachates. However, NF is often subject to low water permeance and membrane fouling for traditional polyamide thin film composite (PA-TFC) membranes. This work develops a high-performance NF membrane by grafting bipyridinium derivative monomer (BBD), an alternative antibacterial by interfering with the bacterial metabolism and reproduction and a hydrophilic compound endowing membrane hydrophilicity, onto PA-TFC membranes through the esterification reaction toward the leachate treatment. Resultantly, the BBD-TFC membrane achieves a reasonably high pure water permeability of 31.6 ± 2.1 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , ∼ 4 times higher than that of the pristine polyamide membrane. Notably, the resultant membrane exhibits excellent antifouling and antibacterial properties in the treatment of the leachate benefiting from the more hydrophilic surface and negative potential on BBD-TFC. Meanwhile, high rejection ratio of divalent ions and organic matter (R > 95%) was also attained companying with high separation efficiency of divalent/monovalent ions. The current work may provide an effective strategy to design high performance NF membranes for the leachate treatment or other wastewater treatment .

Treatment of landfill leachate and recovery of recycled water in photothermal activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) process using iron nanoparticles/MXene-coated polyurethane sponge module (Fe NPs/MXene@PU) were investigated from lab to pilot scale for the first time. In the module preparation process, nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) and iron oxides were in situ generated on Ti 3 C 2 MXene surface. Fe NPs/MXene@PU module reached the 147.7 °C interfacial temperature due to the synergistic effect of MXene and in-situ generated Fe NPs. Sulfate radical (SO 4 •- ) and hydroxyl radical (HO • ) were generated in photothermal activation of PDS process. Under optimized reaction conditions, almost complete removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 – ), ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N) and total phosphorus (TP) of landfill leachate was achieved after about 40 d pilot-scale experiment in the open air. The recycled water collected by natural condensation was also purified, which contained ultralow concentrations of COD, NH 3 -N, NO 3 – , TP and heavy metals and met the discharge limits of various countries. This study provides an eco-friendly and energy-efficient technology for treatment of landfill leachate and recovery of recycled water.

ABSTRACT A novel composite coagulant of MFPAC was prepared from Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and polyaluminum chloride (PAC). Landfill leachate was pretreated by MFPAC coagulation combined with mineralized refuse adsorption. Higher COD and color removals were achieved by using the MFPAC magnetic coagulant than by adding the coagulant PAC alone. Under the working conditions of 1:3 Fe 3 O 4 /PAC mass ratios, 1.5 g/L MFPAC dosage, and pH 7.5, the removal rates of COD and color reached 63% and 67%, respectively. Infrared spectra showed that MFPAC is a type of hydroxyl-containing ligand with a nano-Fe 3 O 4 multi-core and a hydroxyl polymer of aluminum and iron that is similar complex valence and crystal structure as that of PAC. The effluent of MFPAC coagulation was further treated using mineralized refuse adsorption. Under the working conditions of <2 mm particle size of mineralized refuse, 700°C roasting temperature, 40 mg/L adsorbent dosage, and pH 9.0, the removal rates of COD and ammonia nitrogen reached up to 57% and 68%, respectively, after 12 h of treatment. Infrared spectra analysis revealed that OH, C=O, and C–O played key roles in the adsorption process. After the landfill leachate was treated with the combined process, the removal rates of COD, color, and ammonia nitrogen were enhanced to 84%, 80%, and 74%, respectively. The encouraging results demonstrated that the combined process could provide a viable alternative to the pretreatment of landfill leachate.

The treatment of landfill leachate concentrate poses significant environmental challenges, particularly in the separation and recovery of valuable humic substances from high salt concentrations. In this study, a novel loose nanofiltration (LNF) membrane was fabricated using 0.5 wt% triethanolamine (TEOA) and 0.1 wt% trimesoyl chloride (TMC) via interfacial polymerization for the accurate separation of humic substances from inorganic salts in landfill leachate concentrate. The optimized TEOA membrane exhibited high permeate flux about 67.6 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 and over 90 % transmission for ions, while achieving the rejection of humic substances above 92 %. The effects of operating conditions were investigated. Results showed that increasing inorganic salt concentration led to a notable decrease in inorganic salt rejection due to intensified concentration polarization and weakened electrostatic interactions. Rising humic substance concentration further intensified membrane fouling and concentration polarization, resulting in reduced flux and increased humic substance and inorganic salt rejections. Higher temperatures and alkaline pH increased flux and maintained stable rejections. In addition, a two-stage membrane filtration process was subsequently applied to actual landfill leachate concentrate samples. The humic substance concentration was enriched from 1.5 to 37.4 g L −1 , achieving a recovery rate over 60 % at a concentration factor of 12.5. The recovered humic substances complied with the standards of water-soluble fertilizers containing humic-acids (NY1106-2010), highlighting the LNF membrane's potential in sustainable landfill leachate concentrate management and resource recovery.
