Carbon black densified matrix graphite to enhance its anti-infiltration capability against molten salt

Haoran Wang,Lihua Guo,Yajuan Zhong,Jun Lin,Jian Zhang,Xiaojian Mao,Shiwei Wang

A novel graphite matrix was prepared by adding carbon black (CB) as a densification agent to traditional matrix A3-3 graphite preparation. The particle size of CB densifier we chose was approximately 50–150 nm, which was smaller than the pore diameter of densified matrix graphite (500-1000 nm). Five different mass fractions of CB were mixed and compared with as-received A3-3 by various characterization methods, which indicated that CB can effectively fill the pores of A3-3 and improve its anti-infiltration capability against molten salt (fluoride salt for molten salt reactor and heat storage salt). Meanwhile, considering the requirements for A3-3 graphite in scenarios of solid fuel molten salt reactor and thermal energy storage system, all the samples were compared as well before and after purification. The results showed that purification treatment resulted in slight increase of the pore size and open porosity of graphite and thus weakened its anti-infiltration capability against molten salt, but the thermal properties of graphite improved inversely. However, the addition of excessive CB could cause the significantly decline of thermal properties of A3-3. Comprehensively considering the anti-infiltration effect and requirements of thermal properties, adding 5 % CB was the most preferrable choice for the matrix graphite before and after purification.

Synergistic photothermal-osmotic energy harvesting via hierarchical Ti4O7/cellulose membrane for solar-powered freshwater-electricity cogeneration

Xiang Liu,Mingxue Xiang,Peiduo Zhao,Zhixin Wang,Yu Wang

Osmotic energy is a promising clean and sustainable resource for osmotic power generation. However, scaling up reverse electrodialysis technology for osmotic energy harvesting is constrained by limited output power density, primarily due to the dependence of passive ion transport on the concentration gradient. Interfacial solar evaporators yield freshwater and highly concentrated brine. But inevitable heat losses reduce the solar energy utilization efficiency. This study was to construct a multilayer mesh composite membrane with tunable pore sizes via Ti 4 O 7 ceramic fibers and nanocellulose fibers, which adaptable to varying salt concentration environments. Solar radiation can be introduced for seawater desalination coupled with the osmotic energy conversion process to achieve more efficient solar energy utilization. The nanoconfined domains within the multilayer composite membrane enable an efficient interfacial solar water evaporation at a rate of 5.97 kg m −2  h −1 . The effective utilization of heat conduction energy losses elevates the osmosis power generation density to 7.60 W m −2 , which is increased by 198 % compared to conventional device models. This provides a novel design approach for applying ceramic fibers in osmosis power generation and for developing efficient, integrated freshwater-electricity cogeneration systems.

Different hydrophilic bilayer membranes for efficient osmotic energy harvesting with high-concentration exfoliation

Tiancheng Gu,Junjie Xu,Fengdan Zhu,Zhengmao Ding,Yunjun Luo

Sustainable, clean, seawater-river interface osmotic energy shows great potential in replacing traditional fossil fuel sources. Two-dimensional (2D) nanofluidic channels, known for their high throughput, high integration density, and excellent scalability, render practical applications feasible for osmotic energy harvesting. However, 2D nanofluidic channels face challenges such as high internal resistance and high costs, which keep the ultimate goal of large-scale osmotic energy harvesting distant. Herein, a novel method to regulate ion transport resistance by constructing different hydrophilic asymmetric nanofluidic channels using bilayer membrane of vermiculite and MXene is proposed. Vermiculite nanosheets are prepared via polymer-assisted exfoliation method utilizing polyethyl-phosphate glycol ester. After simple stirring and maturation process, the exfoliation concentration can reach 20 phr within 8 h, which is 20 times higher than the previously reported maximum. The internal resistance of the bilayer membrane decreased from 24.1 kΩ to 15.0 kΩ as the direction of ions transport changes. Oxygen plasma assistance enabled the bilayer membrane to reach a maximum power density of 4.66 W m −2 . The high-efficiency preparation method of vermiculite nanosheets and the emphasis on membrane surface properties offer new insights into practical osmotic energy harvesting.

Stable MXene/cellulose nanofiber membranes as osmotic energy generators

Ruoyang Sun,Yumeng Xia,Mengyuan Peng,Yinghui Wang,Jinming Zhang,Qingtao Liu,Shouwei Zhang,Jinfeng Wang

Osmotic energy is a clean and renewable alternative resource to non-renewable fossil fuel. Harvesting this “blue” energy typically required ion-selective membranes. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are ideal scaffolds for constructing nanofluidic ion-selective membranes in osmotic energy conversion. However, the 2D membranes were often fragile and instable in solutions because of the weak van der Waals interactions between two-dimensional nanosheets. Here, stable MXene nanofluidic membranes were constructed by incorporating cellulose nanofiber (CNF) in MXene. The CNF was used as binder to enhance the mechanical stability in solutions. The resulted MXene/CNF membranes were investigated in terms of structure, ion selectivity and osmotic energy generation. The results showed that the MXene/CNF membranes exhibited excellent cation selectivity due to the negative charged carried by MXene and CNF, benefiting the osmotic energy conversion. The maximum power output density reached up to 1.32 and 0.338 W m −2 at 1000-fold KCl and 50-fold NaCl concentration gradient, respectively. Moreover, this MXene/CNF energy generator exhibited a long-term output stability. This work demonstrated the great potential of nanofluidic generators based on the two-dimensional material and the biomass material cellulose for osmotic energy conversion processes.

Two-Sided Asymmetric Nanofluidic Membrane for Enhanced Ion Transport and Osmotic Energy Harvesting

Qijun Zheng,Yue Shen,Junjian Lu,Yan Xu,Xing-Hua Xia,Chen Wang

Nanofluidic membranes holds great potential for osmotic energy conversion. Creating high-efficiency ion-permselective membranes with well-fit channel structure continues to pose a persistent challenge. In this work, we design a novel dual asymmetric nanofluidic membrane with MXene and Nafion separately on the two sides of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) for enhanced ion selective transport. Driven by osmosis, cations are initially separated by Nafion layer with rich negative charges, then followed by accelerated transport due to the interface potential abruptness between AAO channels and MXene layer. Following that, MXene layer acts as the second cation selective layer and further achieve ion charge separation. Benefiting from the dual ion selectivity and accelerated ions transfer, high cation transfer number of 0.95 can be realized using the present membrane. In addition, photo-thermal property of MXene could generate an additional thermal gradient under light irradiation, further promoting ions transfer. Taking advantages of the present two-sided asymmetric nanofluidic membrane, the output power could be up to 65.6 W m-2 at 500-fold NaCl salinity gradient, which is much higher than the majority of previously reported RED membranes (3.0~35.0 W m-2). The present work opens up a new strategy for constructing novel asymmetric nanofluidic devices for enhanced ion transport and osmotic energy harvesting.

Serosa-Mimetic Nanoarchitecture Membranes for Highly Efficient Osmotic Energy Generation

Zengming Man,Javad Safaei,Zhen Zhang,Yizhou Wang,Dong Zhou,Peng Li,Xiaogang Zhang,Lei Jiang,Guoxiu Wang

Osmotic energy stored between seawater and freshwater is a clean and renewable energy source. However, developing high-efficiency and durable permselective membranes for harvesting osmotic energy remains a longstanding bottleneck. Herein, we report that a nanocomposite membrane with a biological serosa-mimetic structure can achieve high-performance osmotic energy generation through the coupling of two-dimensional (2D) sulfonated covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheets and anion-grafted aramid nanofibers (ANFs). As verified by theoretical calculations and experimental investigations, the 2D COF nanosheets not only provide abundant one-dimensional (1D)/2D nanofluidic channels to synergistically benefit an ultrafast ion migration but also enable high cation permselectivity via the covalently tethered anions. The grafted ANFs increase the mechanical strength of the membrane and further improve the ion diffusion/rectification. When it was applied in an osmotic power generator, the biomimetic membrane delivered a power density of 9.6 W m–2, far surpassing the commercial benchmark of 5.0 W m–2. This work could boost the viability of osmotic energy conversion toward a sustainable future.

Thermoenhanced osmotic power generator via lithium bromide and asymmetric sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)/poly(ether sulfone) nanofluidic membrane

Sun Yue,Wu Yadong,Hu Yuhao,Zhu Congcong,Guo Hao,Kong Xiang-Yu,Luo Ercang,Jiang Lei,Wen Liping

Osmotic energy, existing between solutions with different concentrations, is a sustainable and ecofriendly resource for solving energy issues. However, current membrane-based osmotic energy conversion technologies focus on electricity generation from an “open” system by directly mixing salt (NaCl) solutions at room temperature. For the integrated utilization of thermal energy and higher power output performance, we demonstrate thermoenhanced osmotic energy conversion by employing highly soluble lithium bromide (LiBr) solutions, asymmetric sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)/poly(ether sulfone) (SPEEK/PES) membranes, and LiMn 2 O 4 /carbon nanotube (LMO/CNT) electrodes. The thin top layer of this heat-resistant membrane contains hydrophilic groups (i.e., the sulfonated groups in SPEEK) that are beneficial for ion-selective transport. The thermal effect on each solution is investigated, and osmotic energy conversion can be improved by regulating the heat gradient. The power density is ~16.50 W/m 2 by coupling with a temperature gradient (30 °C). This work is a step forward for promoting the performance of osmotic energy conversion with thermal energy assistance and provides the basis for a closed-loop system with regenerated osmotic energy from other energy forms. Moreover, the external field-osmotic hybrid energy conversion system shows powerful potential in the energy harvesting field.

Harvesting osmotic energy from proton gradients enabled by two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXene membranes

Huan Qin,Haoyu Wu,Shu-Mao Zeng,Fan Yi,Si-Yong Qin,Yue Sun,Li Ding,Haihui Wang

Osmotic energy is a kind of blue energy that has recently been identified as an additional source of clean energy. Using a membrane-based reverse electrodialysis (RED) process, this blue energy can be obtained from acidic industrial wastewater with different proton concentration gradients. However, this process demands high-performance membrane that can withstand harsh environments, possessing the advantages of wide pH tolerance, high-temperature resistance and chemical stability, developing such membranes remain a challenge. Herein, we report a two-dimensional (2D) lamellar Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membrane-based RED device for osmotic energy capturing from proton gradients. Such a membrane exhibits a typical surface-charge-governed ion transport feature. Moreover, the MXene membrane-based energy harvesting device holds the merits of outstanding pH and temperature resistance. It exhibits an output power density of 6.5 W/m 2 and also demonstrates stability over 200 h at pH = 0, which is 30% higher than the commercialization benchmark (5 W/m 2 ). The osmotic power density can be further enhanced to 11.1 W/m 2 at 330 K, demonstrating excellent thermal and chemical stability. This work can help better understand protons' transport behaviors in MXene membranes and open new avenues for applications in sustainable power conversion and wastewater treatment.

Interfacial Super-Assembly of Intertwined Nanofibers toward Hybrid Nanochannels for Synergistic Salinity Gradient Power Conversion

Abuduheiremu Awati,Shan Zhou,Ting Shi,Jie Zeng,Ran Yang,Yanjun He,Xin Zhang,Hui Zeng,Dazhang Zhu,Tongcheng Cao,Lei Xie,Mingxian Liu,Biao Kong

Capturing the abundant salinity gradient power into electric power by nanofluidic systems has attracted increasing attention and has shown huge potential to alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution problems. However, not only the imbalance between permeability and selectivity but also the poor stability and high cost of traditional membranes limit their scale-up realistic applications. Here, intertwined “soft-hard” nanofibers/tubes are densely super-assembled on the surface of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) to construct a heterogeneous nanochannel membrane, which exhibits smart ion transport and improved salinity gradient power conversion. In this process, one-dimensional (1D) “soft” TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are wrapped around “hard” carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to form three-dimensional (3D) dense nanochannel networks, subsequently forming a CNF-CNT/AAO hybrid membrane. The 3D nanochannel networks constructed by this intertwined “soft-hard” nanofiber/tube method can significantly enhance the membrane stability while maintaining the ion selectivity and permeability. Furthermore, benefiting from the asymmetric structure and charge polarity, the hybrid nanofluidic membrane displays a low membrane inner resistance, directional ionic rectification characteristics, outstanding cation selectivity, and excellent salinity gradient power conversion performance with an output power density of 3.3 W/m2. Besides, a pH sensitive property of the hybrid membrane is exhibited, and a higher power density of 4.2 W/m2 can be achieved at a pH of 11, which is approximately 2 times more compared to that of pure 1D nanomaterial based homogeneous membranes. These results indicate that this interfacial super-assembly strategy can provide a way for large-scale production of nanofluidic devices for various fields including salinity gradient energy harvesting.

Efficient osmosis-powered production of green hydrogen

Liang Qirui,Huang Yanan,Guo Yaxin,Zhang Xin,Hu Xiaomeng,Zeng Hui,Liang Kang,Zhao Dongyuan,Jiang Lei,Kong Biao

Hydrogen, a clean energy carrier, has emerged as a promising solution to decarbonize the power sector and move towards a more sustainable future. However, the heavy dependence of its production on fossil fuels highlights the pressing need to prioritize the acquisition of green hydrogen from renewable sources, ideally without any additional energy input. Here we utilize the osmotic energy between seawater and freshwater to generate hydrogen directly. With a tandem of high-performance ion exchange membrane and electrocatalytic electrode, our design serves to harvest osmotic energy and drive hydrogen production. Notably, the integrated device demonstrates a consistent alkaline hydrogen evolution rate exceeding 300 l m −2  h −1 for more than 12 days under the artificial salinity gradient. Our study presents a viable pathway for hydrogen production through renewable sources.

Enhancing osmotic energy conversion with functionalized UiO-66-NH2-based heterogeneous membrane

Chenling Yao,Huan Zeng,Caiqin Wu,Di Wang,Wenbo Ma,Guilong Li,Jialing Zhou,Jian Wang

Converting the salinity gradient between seawater and river water into osmotic energy is one of the direct and effective ways to alleviate the energy crisis. High selectivity and permeability are two contradictory aspects in the design of composite membranes , and balancing the relationship between the two is the key to achieving efficient osmotic energy harvesting . Herein, a series of heterogeneous membranes consisting of UiO-66-NH 2 intercalated with poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) were designed to enhance the osmosis power generation capacity. The asymmetry of pore size, surface charge, and wettability of the composite membrane makes it behavior like a diodes-like ionic current rectification (ICR). The addition of PSS changes the ion selectivity and permeability of the composite membrane, thus enhancing the energy harvesting performance. The maximum power density of 6.32 W/m 2 is obtained under a 50-fold salinity gradient, which is 4.94 times that of the original composite membrane. This study provides a reasonable preparation strategy for functionalized MOF-based composite membranes for ion transport and efficient osmotic energy conversion.

Scalable fabrication of integrated covalent organic framework membrane with selective ion transport for efficient salinity gradient energy harvesting

Xiaojun Sun,Mengting Di,Li Gao,Xiaobin Jiang,Xuehua Ruan,Xiaoming Yan,Gaohong He

Interfacial polymerization (IP) is a promising approach for preparing covalent organic framework (COF) membranes in energy storage and conversion applications. However, it is a great challenge for traditional IP with water-organic phase to obtain pre-designable and robust COF membranes. Herein, a "one-pot" organic-organic IP/in situ integration approach, constructing three typical β-ketoenamine COF composite membranes with a maximum area of > 600 cm 2 , are reported. The dual organic phases exhibit comprehensive solubility to precursors, facilitating the synthesis of more types of COFs. In this "one-pot" approach, the porous supporting substrate is in situ formed underneath the COF layer via variable-temperature evaporation of two organic solutions without transfer process. It makes some substrate polymers embedded into the COF layer and accomplishes the interlock of two layers at the interface, producing a robust composite membrane. The prepared COF composite membrane exhibits effective sieving capability for Na + /Mg 2+ and achieves a maximum power density of over 1 W m −2 in the reverse electrodialysis power generation , even using the Na + /Mg 2+ mixed solution. This approach allows for preferably customization of membrane structures, which can expand the applications of COF membranes in separation.
