Three-dimensional flexible thermoelectric fabrics for smart wearables

He Xinyang,Shi Xiao-Lei,Wu Xiaoyun,Li Chengzu,Liu Wen-Di,Zhang Honghua,Yu Xuliang,Wang Liming,Qin Xiaohong,Chen Zhi-Gang

Wearable thermoelectric devices, capable of converting body heat into electrical energy, provide the potential driving power for the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and soft robotics. However, critical parameters have long been overlooked for these practical applications. Here, we report a three-dimensional flexible thermoelectric device with a structure featuring an inner rigid and outer flexible woven design. Such a structure includes numerous small static air pockets that create a stable out-of-plane temperature difference, enabling precise temperature signal detection (accuracy up to 0.02 K). Particularly, this structure exhibits excellent multi-signal decoupling capability, excellent elasticity (>10,000 compression cycles), ultra-fast compression response (20 ms), stable output signal under 50% compressive strain, high breathability (1300 mm s −1 ), and washability. All these metrics achieve the highest values currently reported, fully meeting the requirements for body heat and moisture exchange, as demonstrated in our designed integrated smart mask and smart glove systems based on vector machine learning technology. This work shows that our three-dimensional flexible thermoelectric device has broad applicability in wearable electronics.

NIR II Light-Response Au Nanoframes: Amplification of a Pressure- and Temperature-Sensing Strategy for Portable Detection and Photothermal Therapy of Cancer Cells

Sha Liu,Siyu Lu,Shihao Sun,Jun Hai,Genping Meng,Baodui Wang

Quantitative detection of cancer cells using portable devices is promising for the development of simple, fast, and point-of-care cancer diagnostic techniques. However, how to further amplify the detection signal to improve the sensitivity and accuracy of detecting cancer cells by portable devices remains a challenge. To solve the problem, we, for the first time, synthesized folic-acid-conjugated Au nanoframes (FA-Au NFs) with amplification of pressure and temperature signals for highly sensitive and accurate detection of cancer cells by portable pressure meters and thermometers. The resulting Au NFs exhibit excellent near-infrared (NIR) photothermal performance and catalase activity, which can promote the decomposition of NH4HCO3 and H2O2 to generate corresponding gases (CO2, NH3, and O2), thereby synergistically amplifying pressure signals in a closed reaction vessel. At the same time, Au NFs with excellent peroxidase-like activity can catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce TMB oxide (oxTMB) with a strong photothermal effect, thereby cooperating with Au NFs to amplify the photothermal signal. In the presence of cancer cells with overexpressing folate receptors (FRs), the molecular recognition signals between FA and FR can be converted into amplified pressure and temperature signals, which can be easily read by portable pressure meters and thermometers, respectively. The detection limits for cancer cells using pressure meters and thermometers are 6 and 5 cells/mL, respectively, which are better than other reported methods. Moreover, such Au NFs can improve tumor hypoxia by catalyzing the decomposition of H2O2 to produce O2 and perform photothermal therapy of cancer. Together, our work provides new insight into the application of Au NFs to develop a dual-signal sensing platform with amplification of pressure and temperature signals for portable and ultrasensitive detection of cancer cells as well as personalized cancer therapy.

Adiabatic kinetics calculations considering pressure data

Huanhuan Chen,Liping Chen,Wenqian Wu,Zichao Guo,Xiaoqiao Zhao,Wanghua Chen

Pressure and temperature play an important role in the adiabatic decomposition of hazardous materials. In this article, Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC) was used to study adiabatic decomposition of 40 wt% dicumyl peroxide (DCP) solution,20 wt% di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) solution and 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT). Based on the temperature and pressure signals, the kinetic constants of 40 wt% DCP and20 wt% DTBP were calculated separately. It is found that the temperature and gas production kinetics of the 40 wt% DCP solution are in good agreement with each other, but the temperature and gas production kinetics of 20 wt% DTBP solution are significantly different. The adiabatic decomposition of 2,4-DNT under different pressure conditions was experimentally investigated. The experimental results indicated that pressure promoted the adiabatic decomposition of 2,4-DNT. Accordingly, new kinetic equations were developed to describe the adiabatic decomposition of 2,4-DNT under different pressure conditions. These works provide a new insight into adiabatic kinetics calculations .

Wirelessly detecting of spatiotemporal mechanical stimuli by a bio-inspired neural sensor via temperature signals

Peidi Zhou,Zhonghua Zheng,Jian Lin,Wansong Gu,Zhiling Luo,Yingying Zhang,Luzhuo Chen

Traditional artificial sensory systems, inspired by biological sensory nervous systems, require the integration of distributed units and wired connections to realize the perception of external mechanical stimuli, which brings disadvantages such as complex connections, complicated structures, and interference between signals. Herein, we propose a bio-inspired artificial neural sensor with a highlighted ability of wirelessly detecting spatiotemporal mechanical stimuli, which is fabricated by carbon nanotube and polymer composites. Because the resistance of the sensor varies in respond to external mechanical stimuli, the consequential temperature changes caused by Joule heating effect can be wirelessly detected, realizing the recognition of different mechanical stimuli and multi-positional sensing. The great durability (>1400 cycles) allow the sensor to withstand long-lasting mechanical stimuli. In addition, the artificial neural sensor enables programmable design in device shapes and functions, and it needs no energy consumption without stimulus. We demonstrate a series of touch-interaction applications based on the neural sensor, such as human–computer interaction, encrypted information transmission, and remote control. We hope that this artificial neural sensor will facilitate the development of complex bionic sensing systems, virtual reality, and metaverse.

Liquid density measurement of n-decane with a random temperature signal cross-correlation densimeter at high temperatures and pressures

Song Feng,Qincheng Bi,Wenlin Liao

A novel densimeter based on a random temperature signal cross-correlation method was designed and constructed. Liquid densities of n -decane were measured at T  = (293.2–493.5) K and p  = (0.1–20.0) MPa. The expanded uncertainties in liquid density measurements are 1.16%, with a confidence level of 0.95 ( k  = 2). This experimental study provides new n -decane densities to examine Lemmon's equations' accuracy at high temperatures and pressures, where few experimental densities are yet to be reported. The experimental data's average absolute deviation ( AAD ) and maximum absolute deviation ( MAD ) compared to the fitted data from Lemmon's equations are 0.15% and 0.43%, respectively. The liquid densities at high temperatures and pressures were fitted with a Tait-type equation. The physical meaning and temperature behavior of the Tait correlation's parameters were discussed. The average absolute deviation ( AAD ) between the experimental and calculated data from the Tait-type equation is 0.23%.
