Highly sensitive multifunctional flexible capacitive ionogel sensor for proximity, pressure and temperature perception

Tao Lv,ZeWen Li,ChunYu Lv,XinYu Zhang,Ye Li,Mengying Xie

Flexible sensors with a single tactile sensing function have been extensively studied, however, the development of highly sensitive multifunctional sensors remains a significant challenge in the realm of wearable technology. In this paper, a multifunctional flexible capacitive sensor with integrated proximity, pressure and temperature perception is developed. The dielectric layer of the sensor is obtained by spontaneous polymerization of polyvinyl alcohol and the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide at room temperature. The electrode structure is optimized by leveraging the capacitive fringing field effect, and the designed hole-circle shaped 4 × 4 electrode array achieves optimal proximity sensitivity with a maximal capacitance drop of 0.54 pF to human hand and a detection distance of 30 mm. Besides, the prepared microcone structure sensor exhibits high pressure sensitivity of 4.822 kPa-1(0-5 kPa), rapid response time (<100 ms), a broad detection range (~200 kPa), and excellent stability over 3000 cycles of loading/unloading tests. By exploiting the temperature dependence of the ionic liquid, the sensor also exhibits high temperature sensitivity of 80.6%°C-1(25-80°C). Finally, we verified the successful application of this sensor in dynamic finger trajectory recognition, multi-touch and robotic grasping state detection, paving the way for its use in artificial intelligence, healthcare, and intelligent robotics.

Microfluidic manipulation by spiral hollow-fibre actuators

Li Sitong,Zhang Rui,Zhang Guanghao,Shuai Luyizheng,Chang Wang,Hu Xiaoyu,Zou Min,Zhou Xiang,An Baigang,Qian Dong,Liu Zunfeng

A microfluidic manipulation system that can sense a liquid and control its flow is highly desirable. However, conventional sensors and motors have difficulty fitting the limited space in microfluidic devices; moreover, fast sensing and actuation are required because of the fast liquid flow in the hollow fibre. In this study, fast torsional and tensile actuators were developed using hollow fibres employing spiral nonlinear stress, which can sense the fluid temperature and sort the fluid into the desired vessels. The fluid-driven actuation exhibited a highly increased response speed (27 times as fast as that of air-driven actuation) and increased power density (90 times that of an air-driven solid fibre actuator). A 0.5 K fluid temperature fluctuation produced a 20° rotation of the hollow fibre. These high performances originated from increments in both heat transfer and the average bias angle, which was understood through theoretical analysis. This work provides a new design strategy for intelligent microfluidics and inspiration for soft robots and smart devices for biological, optical, or magnetic applications.

Engineering Self-Adaptive Multi-Response Thermochromic Hydrogel for Energy-Saving Smart Windows and Wearable Temperature-Sensing

Long Xie,Xuechuan Wang,Xiaoliang Zou,Zhongxue Bai,Shuang Liang,Chao Wei,Siyu Zha,Manhui Zheng,Yi Zhou,Ouyang Yue,Xinhua Liu

Buildings account for ≈40% of the total energy consumption. In addition, it is challenging to control the indoor temperature in extreme weather. Therefore, energy-saving smart windows with light regulation have gained increasing attention. However, most emerging base materials for smart windows have disadvantages, including low transparency at low temperatures, ultra-high phase transition temperature, and scarce applications. Herein, a self-adaptive multi-response thermochromic hydrogel (PHC-Gel) with dual temperature and pH response is engineered through “one-pot” integration tactics. The PHC-Gel exhibits excellent mechanical, adhesion, and electrical conductivity properties. Notably, the low critical solubility temperature (LCST) of PHC-Gel can be regulated over a wide temperature range (20–35 °C). The outdoor practical testing reveals that PHC-Gel has excellent light transmittance at low temperatures and radiation cooling performances at high temperatures, indicating that PHC-Gel can be used for developing energy-saving windows. Actually, PHC-Gel-based thermochromic windows show remarkable visible light transparency ( T lum ≈ 95.2%) and solar modulation (△ T sol ≈ 57.2%). Interestingly, PHC-Gel has superior electrical conductivity, suggesting that PHC-Gel can be utilized to fabricate wearable signal-response and temperature sensors. In summary, PHC-Gel has broad application prospects in energy-saving smart windows, smart wearable sensors, temperature monitors, infant temperature detection, and thermal management.

Dopamine-Triggered Hydrogels with High Transparency, Self-Adhesion, and Thermoresponse as Skinlike Sensors

Chao Zhang,Yongsen Zhou,Haijie Han,Huanxi Zheng,Wanghuai Xu,Zuankai Wang

Mussel-inspired conductive hydrogels are attractive for the development of next-generation self-adhesive, flexible skinlike sensors. However, despite extensive progress, there are still some daunting challenges that hinder their applications, such as inferior optical transparency, low catechol content (e.g., poor adhesion), as well as limited sensation performances. Here, we report a dopamine-triggered gelation (DTG) strategy for fabricating mussel-inspired, transparent, and conductive hydrogels. The DTG design leverages on the dual functions of dopamine, which serves as both polymerization initiator and dynamic mediator to elaborate and orchestrate the cross-linking networks of hydrogels, allowing for pronounced adhesion, robust elasticity, self-healing ability, excellent injectability and three-dimensional printability, reversible and tunable transparent-opaque transition, and thermoresponsive feature. These preferable performances enable DTG hydrogels as self-adhesive, flexible skinlike sensors for achieving multiple sensations toward pressure, strain, and temperature, even an extraordinary visual perception effect, making it a step closer in the exploration of future biomimetic skin.

A Microphase-Separated Design toward an All-Round Ionic Hydrogel with Discriminable and Anti-Disturbance Multisensory Functions

Xue Liu,Xinyi Ji,Rongjie Zhu,Jianfeng Gu,Jiajie Liang

Stretchable ionic hydrogels with superior all-round properties that can detect multimodal sensations with excellent discriminability and robustness against external disturbances are highly required for artificial electronic skinapplications. However, some critical material parameters exhibit intrinsic tradeoffs with each other for most ionic hydrogels. Here, a microphase-separated hydrogel is demonstrated by combining three strategies: (1) using of a low crosslinker/monomer ratio to obtain highly entangled polymer chains as the first network; (2) the introduction of zwitterions into the first network; (3) the synthesis of an ultrasoft polyelectrolyte as the second network. This all-round elastic ionic hydrogel exhibits a low Young's modulus (< 60 kPa), large stretchability (> 900%), high resilience (> 95%), unique strain-stiffening behavior, excellent fatigue tolerance, high ionic conductivity (> 2.0 S m⁻ 1 ), and anti-freezing capability, which have not been achieved before. These properties allow the ionic hydrogel to operate as a stretchable multimodal sensor that can detect and decouple multiple stimuli (temperature, pressure, and proximity) with excellent discriminability, high sensitivity, and strong sensing-robustness against strains or temperature perturbations. The ionic hydrogel sensor exhibits great potential for intelligent electronic skin applications such as reliable health monitoring and accurate object identification.

A Robust Core-Shell Nanofabric with Personal Protection, Health Monitoring and Physical Comfort for Smart Sportswear

Peiqi Wu,Jianfeng Gu,Xue Liu,Yichen Ren,Xiaoqian Mi,Weiqing Zhan,Xinmin Zhang,Huihui Wang,Xinyi Ji,Zhao Yue,Jiajie Liang

Smart textiles with a high level of personal protection, health monitoring, physical comfort, and wearing durability are highly demanded in clothing for harsh application scenarios, such as modern sportswear. However, seamlessly integrating such a smart clothing system has been a long-sought but challenging goal. Herein, based on coaxial electrospinning techniques, a smart non-woven textile (Smart-NT) integrated with high impact resistance is developed, multisensory functions, and radiative cooling effects. This Smart-NT is comprised of core-shell nanofibers with an ionic conductive polymer sheath and an impact-stiffening polymer core. The soft smart textile, with a thickness of only 800 µm, can attenuate over 60% of impact force, sense pressure stimulus with sensitivity up to 201.5 kPa −1 , achieve temperature sensing resolution of 0.1 °C, and reduce skin temperature by ≈17 °C under a solar intensity of 1 kW m −2 . In addition, the stretchable Smart-NT is highly durable and robust, retaining its multifunction features over 10 000 bending and multiple washing cycles. Finally, application scenarios are demonstrated for real-time health monitoring, body protection, and physical comfort of smart sportswear based on Smart-NT for outdoor sports. The strategy opens a new avenue for seamless integration of smart clothing systems.
