Mimicking multiple perceptions of human skin is a basic requirement for artificial intelligence electronic skin (e-skin) perception. Despite significant advances in e-skin for multifunctional sensing, achieving self-powered and truly distinguishing between different stimulus signals still remain challenges. Here, we developed a flexible self-powered temperature-pressure dual functional e-skin (STPES) based on the coupling triboelectric and thermoelectric effects. It can effectively convert temperature and pressure stimuli into two independent voltage signals without signal interference. In addition, the temperature sensing process is powered by natural temperature gradient , with the resolution of 0.5 K and the sensitivity of 220 µV K −1 . The self-powered pressure sensor based on triboelectric effect can detect the pressure over a wide range (1 Pa-100 kPa) with the maximum sensitivity of 1.394 V kPa −1 . The dual-parameter e-skin attached to the robotic arm is demonstrated to detect the weight and temperature of water cup simultaneously. This work provides a promising prototype for passive multi-parameters e-skin, which has great potential for application in wearable health monitoring systems and artificial intelligence perception.

Skin-like sensors have attracted considerable attention in recent years owing to their important applications in intelligent robots, advanced medical equipment, and bionic technologies. However, most sensing skins are based on electronic systems that have many constraints and application limitations since their electronics-based structures have the disadvantages of complex structure, cannot withstand harsh environments, power supply needed, and so on. In this study, a transparent phosphorescence-based, flexible temperature-tactile multi-functional sensing skin was developed by arranging temperature-sensitive and mechanoluminescent microparticles in a polyimide . Based on the thermal-quenching of phosphorescence and mechanoluminescence, the temperature and stress signals are sensing wirelessly in the form of light. And due to the different phosphor materials, the temperature and stress signals are optically sensed and separated by wavelength. To enhance the sensitivity of tactile sensing, a unique sensor structure with protruding was constructed based on the tension effect of the polyimide solution to achieve effective tactile sensing. The temperature and tactile sensing functions of the skin were successfully demonstrated. In addition, its application to robot skin has also been verified. The current study shows the potential of the phosphorescence- based flexible sensing skin, indicating that it is a possible development direction for flexible sensing skin.

Tactile sensors with multimode sensing ability are cornerstones of artificial skin for applications in humanoid robotics and smart prosthetics. However, the intuitive and interference-free reading of multiple tactile signals without involving complex algorithms and calculations remains a challenge. Herein a pressure–temperature bimodal tactile sensor without any interference is demonstrated by combining the fundamentally different sensing mechanisms of optics and electronics, enabling the simultaneous and independent sensing of pressure and temperature with the elimination of signal separation algorithms and calculations. The bimodal sensor comprises a mechanoluminescent hybrid of ZnS–CaZnOS and a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) thermoresistant material, endowing the unambiguous transduction of pressure and temperature into optical and electrical signals, respectively. This device exhibits the highest temperature sensitivity of −0.6% °C–1 in the range of 21–60 °C and visual sensing of the applied forces at a low limitation of 2 N. The interference-free and light-emitting characteristics of this device permit user-interactive applications in robotics for encrypted communication as well as temperature and pressure monitoring, along with wireless signal transmission. This work provides an unexplored solution to signal interference of multimodal tactile sensors, which can be extended to other multifunctional sensing devices.

The perception of temperature and pressure of skin plays a vital role in joint movement, hand grasp, emotional expression, and self-protection of human. Among many biomimetic materials, ionic gels are uniquely suited to simulate the function of skin due to its ionic transport mechanism. However, both the temperature and pressure sensing are heavily dependent on the changes in ionic conductivity, making it impossible to decouple the temperature and pressure signals. Here, a pressure-insensitive and temperature-modulated ion channel is designed by synergistic strategies for gel skeleton's compact packing and ultra-thin structure, mimicking the function of the temperature ion channel in human skin. This ion-confined gel can completely suppress the pressure response of the temperature sensing layer. Furthermore, a temperature-pressure decoupled ionic sensor is fabricated and it is demonstrated that the ionic sensor can sense complex signals of temperature and pressure. This novel and effective approach has great potential to overcome one of the current barriers in developing ionic skin and extending its applications.

Sensing pressure and temperature are two important functions of human skin that integrate different types of tactile receptors. In this paper, a deformable artificial flexible multi-stimulus-responsive sensor is demonstrated that can distinguish mechanical pressure from temperature by measuring the impedance and the electrical phase at the same frequency without signal interference. The electrical phase, which is used for measuring the temperature, is totally independent of the pressure by controlling the surface micro-shapes and the ion content of the ionic film. By doping the counter-ion exchange reagent into the ionic liquid before pouring, the upper temperature measuring limit increases from 35 to 50 °C, which is higher than the human body temperature and the ambient temperature on Earth. The sensor shows high sensitivity to pressure (up to 0.495 kPa −1 ) and a wide temperature sensing range (−10 to 50 °C). A multimodal ion-electronic skin (IE M -skin) with an 8 × 8 multi-stimulus-responsive sensor array is fabricated and can successfully sense the distribution of temperature and pressure at the same time. Finally, the sensors are used for monitoring the touching motions of a robot-arm finger controlled by a remote interactive glove and successfully detect the touching states and the temperature changes of different objects.

Electronic skin (E-skin) with multimodal sensing ability demonstrates huge prospects in object classification by intelligent robots. However, realizing the object classification capability of E-skin faces severe challenges in multiple types of output signals. Herein, a hierarchical pressure–temperature bimodal sensing E-skin based on all resistive output signals is developed for accurate object classification, which consists of laser-induced graphene/silicone rubber (LIG/SR) pressure sensing layer and NiO temperature sensing layer. The highly conductive LIG is employed as pressure-sensitive material as well as the interdigital electrode. Benefiting from high conductivity of LIG, pressure perception exhibits an excellent sensitivity of −34.15 kPa −1 . Meanwhile, a high temperature coefficient of resistance of −3.84%°C −1 is obtained in the range of 24–40 °C. More importantly, based on only electrical resistance as the output signal, the bimodal sensing E-skin with negligible crosstalk can simultaneously achieve pressure and temperature perception. Furthermore, a smart glove based on this E-skin enables classifying various objects with different shapes, sizes, and surface temperatures, which achieves over 92% accuracy under assistance of deep learning. Consequently, the hierarchical pressure–temperature bimodal sensing E-skin demonstrates potential application in human-machine interfaces, intelligent robots, and smart prosthetics.

The progress from intelligent interactions requires electronic skin (E-skin) to shift from single-functional perception to multisensory capabilities. However, the intuitive and interference-free reading of multiple sensory signals without involving complex algorithms is a critical challenge. Herein, we propose a flexible multisensory E-skin by developing a highly homogeneous dispersion of BaTiO 3 nanoparticles in polydimethylsiloxane dielectric layer. The E-skin is sensitive to externally applied pressure as well as temperature and can distinguish dual synergetic stimuli by the time decoupling effect. The pressure and temperature perception was achieved in an individual device, which greatly reduced the structural complexity compared with multifunctional integrated devices. The sensitivity of E-skin for pressure detection is as high as 0.0724 kPa −1 and the detection range reaches as wide as 15.625–10 MPa. The sensitivity to temperature detection is as high as −1.34°C −1 and the detection range reaches 20–200°C. More importantly, by equipping with a multilayer neural network, the evolution from tactile perception to advanced intelligent tactile cognition is demonstrated.

Human skin is the largest organ, and it can transform multiple external stimuli into the biopotential signals by virtue of ions as information carriers. Ionic skins (i-skins) that can mimic human skin have been extensively explored; however, the limited sensing capacities as well as the need of an extra power supply significantly restrict their broad applications. Herein, we develop self-powered humanlike i-skins based on gradient polyelectrolyte membranes (GPMs) that can directly and accurately perceive multiple stimuli. Prepared by a hydrogel-assisted reaction-diffusion method, the GPMs exhibit gradient-distributed charged groups across polymer networks, enabling one to generate a thickness-dependent and thermoresponsive self-induced potential in a hydrated situation and in a humidity-sensitive self-induced potential in a dehydrated/dried situation, respectively. Consequently, the GPM-based i-skins can precisely detect pressure, temperature, and humidity in a self-powered manner. The coupling of mechano-electric and thermo-electric effects inherent in GPMs provides a general strategy for developing innovative self-powered ion-based perception systems.

E-skin that can mimic the complex functions of human skin has attracted considerable interest in health monitoring and medical diagnosis. However, the accurate and reliable detection of multiple external stimuli using a sole sensing component remains challenging. Herein, we describe a flexible strain-temperature sensor fabricated by employing conductive 1D multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), 2D reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and a flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate to construct a sandwich structure. Consequently, the flexible MWCNTs@RGO hybrid film with optimized conductivity exhibits a high gauge factor (GF = 1888) at a strain up to 40 %, prominent long-term durability (8000 cycles at 25 % strain), low strain detection (0.05 %) and rapid response (57 ms). The significantly enhanced performance is attributed to the synergy of tubular MWCNTs and layered RGO, as revealed by finite element analysis. Additionally, the hybrid film sensor exhibits temperature-sensing ability with a typical negative temperature coefficient of resistance and delivers an improved sensitivity upon thermal stimulus via prestrain-induced microcracks and a thermal expansion strategy. Owing to its excellent sensing properties, it can not only detect human motions in various situations but also be adopted as a temperature warning/cooling system, supporting its feasibility for use by patients lacking temperature perception and bringing convenience to daily life.

Passive radiative cooling and solar heating have received a great deal of scholarly attention as green and sustainable ways to maintain thermal homeostasis. However, most of the current passive radiative cooling and solar heating materials are optically static and cannot adapt to seasonal dynamic weather changes. Herein, we developed an HPC/CaCl2/C dual-mode device (HCC) that autonomously senses changes in ambient temperature to switch cooling/heating modes. When the ambient temperature reaches the low critical solution temperature (LCST ≈ 37 °C) of the hydrogel, the cooling side of HCC gradually turns white to reflect sunlight and radiative cooling happens by means of a high infrared emissivity (0.97) in the atmospheric window band (8–13 μm). The heat-absorbing effect of the heated side accelerates the phase transition of the hydrogel and makes it change to the cooling mode more quickly. When the ambient temperature is higher than LCST, at an irradiance of 850 W/m2, the HCC-20 coating leads to a cavity cooling temperature of approximately 12.3 °C and the theoretical cooling power is 109.3 W/m2. When the ambient temperature is lower than the LCST, the upper hydrogel layer is transparent and HCC-20 transforms into a heating function. Under weather conditions with the irradiance of 500 W/m2 and a maximum ambient temperature of 6 °C, the average heating capacity is up to around 8 °C. The HCC dual-mode device can automatically switch between cooling and heating modes and has great application potential in fields such as buildings and automobiles, providing a favorable way to mitigate energy crises and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Human body temperature is a critical physiological indicator, reflecting metabolism and temperature regulation. Biomimetic temperature sensors with high temporal and spatial resolution are highly desired to emulate human skin's temperature perception capabilities. Here, a selective filtration method is proposed to fabricate a jointless p-n thermoelectric module, integrating p-type and n-type materials with minimal interfacial barriers. The structure enables rapid response, minimal signal variation, and a robust linear relationship between open circuit voltage and temperature difference, making it suitable as a biomimetic thermoreceptor for enhancing humanoid robots with intelligent sensing capabilities. A smart thermoelectric sensing system with a high temporal and spatial resolution is developed using with jointless p-n module as the sensing element. In temporal thermal sensing, the sensing system can timely and effectively identify the heat source, with a fast response time of <0.1 s. In addition, in spatial thermal sensing, the system reliably detects thermal stimuli within discrete regions of each measuring area of <1 × 1 cm 2 . This study provides an effective strategy for temperature sensors in thermoelectric sensing and biomimetic thermoreceptor applications.

Inspired by the interlocked biological geometry of human skin, herein, we design a flexible and transparent sensor with interlocked square column arrays with composites of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), citric acid (CA), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), which exhibit multisensory capabilities for pressure, temperature, and humidity. As a flexible pressure sensor, the interlocked AgNPs/CA/PVA sensor possesses a high sensitivity (−1.82 kPa–1), low detection limit (10 Pa), fast response (75 ms), and outstanding stability due to the high sensitivity of the contact resistance of the interlocked square column arrays to pressure. Because of the rigid dependence of the resistance of the AgNPs/CA/PVA composite on temperature, the interlocked AgNPs/CA/PVA sensor can also act as a temperature sensor, which exhibits high resolution (0.1 °C) and reliability in detecting ambient temperature. In addition, it is found that the amount of water molecules adsorbed by PVA and CA changes with the ambient humidity. Therefore, the interlocked AgNPs/CA/PVA sensor is also able to detect humidity in real time. This work proposes a simple but useful route to fabricate a flexible and transparent electrical skin sensor, which has great potential in the perception of pressure, temperature, and humidity.
