Highly efficient red-emitting carbon dots as a “turn-on” temperature probe in living cells

Qin Wang,Zhihua Tang,Lihua Li,Jinxiu Guo,Lingxia Jin,Jiufu Lu,Pei Huang,Shengrui Zhang,Long Jiao

Nanothermometers, which can precisely detect the intracellular temperature changes, have great potential to solve questions concerning the cellular processes. Thus, the temperature sensors that provide fluorescent “turn-on” signals in the biological transparency window are of highly desirable. To meet these criteria, this work reported a new “turn-on” carbon dot (CD)-based fluorescent nanothermometry device for sensing temperature in living cells. The CDs that emit bright red fluorescence (R-CDs; λ max  = 610 nm in water) were synthesized with o -phenylenediamine as carbon precursor via a facile solvothermal method. The R-CDs in water were almost nonfluorescent at 15 °C. As the temperature increased, the fluorescence intensity of R-CDs exhibited a gradual increase and the final enhancement factor was greater than 21-fold. The fluorescence intensity exhibited a linear response to temperature and a high-sensitive variation of ≈13.3 % °C −1 was detected within a broad temperature range of 28–60 °C. Moreover, the R-CD thermal sensors also exhibited high storage stability, excellent response reversibility and superior photo- and thermo-stability. Due to its good biocompatibility and “intelligent” response to external temperature, the nanothermometer could be applied for sensing temperature changes in biological media.

Shell thickness-induced thermal dependence: highly sensitive core–shell CdSe/ZnS/POSS-based temperature probes

Jiannan Sun,Ke Yan,Aizhao Pan,Pan Zhang,Xuehang Chen,Xinyi Shi,Chengyu Shi

Fluorescence nanothermometry based on quantum dots is a current research hotspot for novel non-contact temperature monitoring, and is of vital significance for the modulation and design of the sensing properties of sensors. Herein, a design strategy to modulate the temperature-sensing characteristics of quantum dots based on the thickness of a shell is proposed. In this study, CdSe/ZnS quantum dot/POSS-based temperature probe films with varying fluorescence characteristics were developed, and the influence of the ZnS shell on temperature sensing was examined by varying the thickness of the ZnS shell. The temperature dependency, linearity, range of applications, and reversibility of quantum dot thin film probes were all considerably regulated by the ZnS shell, according to research on quantum dot/POSS-based films coated with various shell thicknesses. The CdSe/ZnS temperature probe with 4 monolayers (MLs) stood out among the rest due to its strong thermal stability (at least 5 cycles), large usable temperature range (20–80 °C), and excellent temperature sensitivity (R2 > 0.994). The results demonstrated that the temperature sensing performance of quantum dots was the consequence of the combined effect of multiple temperature response properties induced by the thickness of the shell, and the shell control of quantum dots to optimize the temperature sensing performance was an essential approach for the design of temperature probes. This work demonstrates the great potential of the shell in tuning the temperature sensing performance of quantum dots and provides a viable approach for the design of quantum dot temperature probes.

Temperature-dependent photoluminescence of cadmium-free Cu–Zn–In–S quantum dot thin films as temperature probes

Lan Wang,Xiaojiao Kang,Lijian Huang,Daocheng Pan

We reported temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) studies on Cu–Zn–In–S quantum dot (QD) thin films. In this paper, cadmium-free and luminescent Cu–Zn–In–S quantum dot thin films were in situ formed by thermal decomposition of molecular-based precursors in the open air, without need of the complicated quantum dot synthesis. Molecular-based precursor solutions were prepared by dissolving Cu2O, ZnO, and In(OH)3 in the ethanol solution of butylamine and carbon disulfide. The effects of sintering temperature, sintering time, and the concentration of capping agents on the photoluminescence properties of Cu–Zn–In–S QD thin films have been systematically investigated. It was found that alkali metal ions play an important role in enhancing the PL quantum yield of quantum dot thin films. The as-prepared QD thin films show composition-tunable emission in the range of 535 nm to 677 nm, and the absolute PL quantum yields can reach as high as 22.1%. All of the as-deposited QD thin films show a single-exponential decay to temperature, indicating that these cadmium-free QD thin films have high potential as temperature probes.

High-performance nanothermometry system with controlled sensitivity based on dual-emission CsPbBr3/CdTe@SiO2 core/shell nanocomposites

Jiannan Sun,Pan Zhang,Ke Yan,Aizhao Pan,Christophe Len,Weiyi Ouyang,Chengyu Shi,Xinyi Shi,Jun Hong

Quantum dots (QDs) with dual-emission property have garnered significant attention as prototype platforms for temperature measurement due to their self-calibration capabilities and high sensitivity. The assembly and property modulation of this materials hold great research value. In this work, we propose a strategy to utilize dendritic mesoporous SiO 2 core–shell spheres to encapsulate dual QDs, enabling the constructing of dual-emission fluorescent temperature sensing system. By encapsulating CsPbBr 3 and CdTe QDs in SiO 2 core–shell spheres, we developed a dual-emission temperature probe that employs two thermometry modes: peak wavelength spacing variation and fluorescence intensity ratio. This probe offers advantages such as high thermal stability, excellent fit, and high sensitivity. Additionally, inspired by the concept of series sliding resistors, we introduced a novel approach to adjust the probe’s sensitivity by treating the fluorescence intensity and peak wavelength of the dual QDs as the “sliding resistor”. This innovation results in a temperature fluorescence sensing system with tunable sensitivity. We also explored the potential applications of these probes in temperature measurement, light-emitting diodes, and fluorescent anti-counterfeiting. Our research presents an effective strategy for the rational design of high-performance dual-emission fluorescence temperature sensing systems with customizable sensitivity.

Highly sensitive temperature probe fabricated by high aspect ratio Eu-BTC nanowire

Jiannan Sun,Aizhao Pan,Ke Yan,Pan Zhang,Yinghao Chen,Wei Xiong,Xuehang Chen,Jun Hong

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great potential as a new platform for developing solid-state light-emitting temperature probes . Herein, we synthesized Eu-BTC (MOFs) with controllable nanowire and nanorod morphologies by changing solvents. Eu-BTC Nanowire was produced from DMF with a size of 15 µm and a 21.5 % photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), while the nanorods from H 2 O yielded with a size of 200 nm (PLQY=17.4 %). The Eu-BTC materials exhibited highly variable temperature properties depending on the morphology. Eu-BTC Nanowire from DMF presented better temperature dependence as a highly sensitive temperature probe owing to its higher linearity and more excellent temperature-dependent reversibility , which further demonstrated its potential for application as a temperature probe. While, the Eu-BTC nanorod from H 2 O showed a non-linear relationship with temperature and low temperature-dependent reversibility , making it unsuitable as a temperature probe. The morphologies-dependent luminescence sensing mechanism of Eu-BTCs and the heat conduction induced by surface defects mechanism were proposed. This work provides theoretical guidance for developing highly sensitive and non-contact temperature probes , especially for the morphology-dependent temperature probes.

N, S co-doped carbon dots for temperature probe and the detection of tetracycline based on the inner filter effect

Chunxi Zhao,Yang Jiao,Zhe Gao,Yaling Yang,Hong Li

Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N, S co-doped CDs) were prepared from glutathione with a hydrothermal method and developed for temperature probe as well as fluorescent sensor of tetracycline. The as-prepared N, S co-doped CDs exhibited good optical properties, stability, water solubility and high fluorescence quantum yield(17.5%). The fluorescence intensity of the N, S co-doped CDs varied with temperature in the range of 10–70 °C. Moreover, based on the inner filter effect (IFE), the nanoparticle-based sensor displayed a wide linear range of 0.1–65 μM (R 2 = 0.9916) and provided an exciting detection limit of 0.04 μM (signal-to-noise ratio of 3) for quantifying tetracycline. More strikingly, the N, S co-doped CDs sensing system could commendably resist the interference from potential foreign substances, and achieved satisfactory recoveries, which indicated the excellent selectivity and sufficient accuracy of the sensor for real milk samples analyses. As a simple and effective optical nanosensor, the proposed N, S co-doped CDs hold admirable promise to broaden the applications in food analysis and others fields.

Dual emission N-doped carbon dots as a ratiometric fluorescent and colorimetric dual-signal probe for indigo carmine detection

Yecang Tang,Xuemei Dong,Minhui Wang,Beibei Guo

Novel dual-emission fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon dots ( N -CDs) were synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method using ascorbic acid and rhodamine B as precursors and melamine as nitrogen source. The obtained N -CDs exhibited dual-emitting peaks at 435 nm and 578 nm under the single excitation of 350 nm. The fluorescence at 578 nm was more effectively quenched by indigo carmine (IC) based on the internal filtration effect and aggregation-induced emission quenching. Meanwhile, the apparent color change of N -CDs from pink to blue-purple after adding various concentrations of IC could be clearly observed with the naked eye. Therefore, a ratiometric fluorescent and colorimetric dual-signal probe based on N -CDs was developed for IC detection with high selectivity and sensitivity. The addition of IC caused the ratiometric fluorescent value ( F 435 / F 578 ) to increase linearly within the range from 0 to100 µM with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.18 µM and the colorimetric signal presented a linear response in the range of 0–133 µM with a LOD of 57.4 nM. Furthermore, the IC in juice drink, candy, and water was successfully detected. Besides, the N -CDs were also designed as a ratiometric temperature probe, and the ratiometric fluorescence signal ( F 435 / F 578 ) was linearly and reversibly responsive to temperature in the range of 20–75 °C.
