Catalytic Ozonation of Formaldehyde with an Oxygen-Vacancy-Rich MnOx/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst at Room Temperature

Yulin Sun,Yiwei Zhang,Baoqing Hou,Yong He,Wubin Weng,Yanqun Zhu,Zhihua Wang

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is known as one of the important indoor organic pollutants. How to remove and decompose the low concentration of formaldehyde at room temperature is important for indoor environments. Catalytic ozonation is an efficient method to thoroughly remove HCHO at room temperature, with high efficiency and few byproducts. A series of MnOx/γ-Al2O3catalysts were prepared in this work via the impregnation method and treated with different reagents (acid, alkali, and H2O2) to evaluate their catalytic activity for HCHO removal. The results showed that MnAl-II (acid treatment) performed well in activity tests, reaching a nearly 100% HCHO conversion at an O3/HCHO of 2.0 and attaining a CO2selectivity of above 95% at an O3/HCHO of 3.0 at 30 °C, with almost no ozone residual existing. The larger specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, and higher number of acid sites contributed to the excellent performance of MnAl-II. Stability and H2O resistance tests of MnAl-II were also conducted. To reveal the intermediate product formation and further investigate the reaction mechanism of HCHO ozonation, in-situ DRIFTS measurement was carried out combined with DFT calculations.

Lithium-based water-absorbent hydrogel with a high solar cell cooling flux

Haoran Li,Jiahui Ma,Wei Yan,Jingrui Lan,Wenpeng Hong

The lifetime and photovoltaic conversion efficiency of the solar cell will decline as the temperature rises. Herein, a versatile hydrogel allowing atmospheric water harvesting and evaporative cooling is introduced to passively reduce the working temperature of the solar cell. As a flexible substrate, the lithium-rich and highly absorbent polyacrylamide hydrogel is employed to satisfy these specifications. Preferentially, the water-saturated hydrogel, which is bonded to the backside of the solar cell, collects the waste heat produced by the cell and dissipates it into the atmosphere by water evaporation. Importantly, the hydrogel naturally gathers atmospheric vapor at night or on overcast days to revive its cooling ability. This configuration endows the PV cell with a cooling flux of up to 529 W m −2 and thus reduces the working temperature of a polycrystalline silicon cell by 26 °C at 1 sun (=1 kW m −2 ) illumination. More importantly, the hydrogel arrangement supports 6.2 % and 17 % improvements in average open-circuit and maximum power output (or photovoltaic efficiency), respectively. This is devoid of limits on access to liquid water resources, making it a potential option for efficient and sustainable solar cell power generation.

Application of Solvent-Assisted Dual-Network Hydrogel in Water-Based Drilling Fluid for Lost Circulation Treatment in Fractured Formation

Xin Zheng,Zhifeng Duan,Yan Zhuang,Shifeng Zhang,Xinying Cui,Donghui Qin

During oil and gas well construction, lost circulation caused substantial nonoperation time and extra costs, and hydrogel, resilient and environmentally friendly, was one of the major types of material for lost circulation treatment. To migrate the weak bonding and hydrothermal degradation of conventional single network hydrogels, dual network (DN) hydrogel was prepared and immersed in solvents of polyethylene glycol (PEG), ethylene glycol, and glycerol. The swelling of DN gels at different temperatures was studied with water content and swelling rate tests, and the gel structural and morphology was characterized with attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) and scanning electron microscopy test. Then, the compression test and fracture plugging performance test were conducted to study the strength of the gel. The results show that compared to those in ethylene glycol and glycerin, DN gel after immersion in PEG (DN-PEG) exhibits greater compression strength and better plugging performance even at high temperatures. The compression strength of DN-PEG was twice that of DN hydrogel before immersion, and its fracture plug breaking pressure can reach over 10.0 MPa. After undergoing hydrothermal treatment at 90 °C, the compression strength of the DN-PEG was nearly 20 times that of the DN hydrogel, and the fracture plug breaking pressure was still 2.81 MPa. According to ATR-IR spectroscopy, as the molecular weight of the solvent increases, more hydroxyl groups in the PEG have better ability to bind with hydrogen bonds, which greatly inhibits the swelling and polymer chain breakage, thereby reducing hydrothermal degradation in the strength of the dual-network hydrogel. Our work proposed an effective method to reduce the degradation of hydrogel in water at high temperature, and the prepared DN-PEG hydrogel was a promising material for lost circulation treatments in fractured formation.

High temperature degradable pullulan microsphere/polymer composite for filtration loss control of water-based drilling fluids

Zhengwen Lin,Fang Li,Xinyu Liu,Junlin Su

The effective control of water-based drilling fluid filtration rates in deep and ultra-deep wells poses a significant challenge. This study introduced a novel approach utilizing pullulan microsphere (PM) grafted with N,N-dimethylacrylamide, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride as a filtrate reducer (PM-DAD). The polymer's structure was analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Structural characterization confirmed the successful polymerization and good thermal stability of PM-DAD. PM-DAD showed the pH response characteristics of particle size decreasing with the increase of alkalinity and the temperature response characteristics of degradation into nanoparticles after high temperature aging. The filtration loss and rheological properties of PM-DAD were assessed in accordance with the American Petroleum Institute standards. The rheological evaluation results indicated that PM-DAD could effectively maintain optimal rheological properties of the base mud after aging. PM-DAD showed remarkable filtration loss reduction ability. After aging at 200 °C, the filtration loss of the base mud was 4.7 mL, and that of the base mud containing 15 wt% NaCl was 8.2 mL. The filtration reduction mechanism of PM-DAD was investigated through mud cake analysis, particle size distribution, and X-ray diffraction. The filtration loss reduction mechanism showed that degraded nano PM-DAD intercalated between smectite clay minerals, creating electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonds with the smectite surface, thereby facilitating the formation of a dense filter cake This research not only presents a novel approach for the utilization of pullulan but also offers a new path for controlling high-temperature filtration in water-based drilling fluids.

Highly efficient low-temperature biodegradation of polyethylene microplastics by using cold-active laccase cell-surface display system

Ailin Zhang,Yanhua Hou,Yatong Wang,Quanfu Wang,Xuejing Shan,Jianan Liu

To eliminate efficiency restriction of polyethylene microplastics low-temperature biodegradation, a novel InaKN-mediated Escherichia coli surface display platform for cold-active degrading laccase PsLAC production was developed. Display efficiency of 88.0% for engineering bacteria BL21/pET-InaKN-PsLAC was verified via subcellular extraction and protease accessibility, exhibiting an activity load of 29.6 U/mg. Cell growth and membrane integrity revealed BL21/pET-InaKN-PsLAC maintained stable growth and intact membrane structure during the display process. The favorable applicability was confirmed, with 50.0% activity remaining in 4 days at 15 °C, and 39.0% activity recovery retention after 15 batches of activity substrate oxidation reactions. Moreover, BL21/pET-InaKN-PsLAC possessed high polyethylene low-temperature depolymerizing capacity. Bioremediation experiments proved that the degradation rate was 48.0% within 48 h at 15 °C, and reached 66.0% after 144 h. Collectively, cold-active PsLAC functional surface display technology and its significant contributions to polyethylene microplastics low-temperature degradation constitute an effective improvement strategy for biomanufacturing and microplastics cold remediation.

Boron particles acting as antioxidants for fluorosilicone rubber due to their radical scavenging activity

Anna Zheng,Yongkang Huang,Yang You,Jian Hu,Dafu Wei,Xiang Xu,Yong Guan

The heat resistance enhancement of fluorosilicone rubber (FSR) can make it more suitable for cutting-edge applications and extreme conditions. This paper focused on the antioxidant properties of boron particles for FSR and the corresponding mechanism. The thermal stability of FSR and FSR/boron composites was characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), isothermal degradation and thermal-oxidative ageing. The results showed that boron significantly improved the thermal stability of FSR. In particular, the FSR/boron (100/10) composite retained 95% of its weight after isothermal degradation at 350 °C for 12 h, while the FSR lost 55% of its weight within the initial 1 h. The antioxidant mechanism of boron was further investigated by chemiluminescence (CL), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and vulcanization curves. It was shown that boron has powerful radical scavenging activity (RSA) and inhibited the oxidation scission of the side groups. Moreover, boron revealed no RSA towards the tert-butoxy radical, ensuring the good vulcanization of the FSR/boron composites.

Low Temperature and Efficient Catalytic Depolymerization of Polyethylene Terephthalate Waste

Yunjin Zhong,Lu Zhang,Kuanrong Xue,Tianzhong Wu,Xianming Zhang,Rui Yu,Hua Xin,Yun Qu

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), one of the most extensively manufactured and utilized polyester materials, has inflicted irreversible harm on the ecological environment due to inadequate management. While glycolysis is considered the most attractive chemical recycling strategy for waste PET, existing research faces persistent challenges including high temperatures, strong dependence on metal catalysts, and slow reaction rates. In this work, a low-temperature, highly efficient metal-free catalytic system was designed. Acetonitrile was employed as a cosolvent; the activation energy required for the reaction was effectively reduced, enabling the green and efficient depolymerization of waste PET bottles through optimizing the ethylene glycol/acetonitrile (EG/ACN) ratio. The results demonstrated that this catalytic system attained 99.9% PET conversion at just 130°C within 3 h, yielding 81% crystalline bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) with 97% purity. Furthermore, the use of an organic base catalyst eliminated metal contamination, further enhancing product quality. Consequently, this catalytic system simultaneously fulfills the requirements of low-temperature, high efficiency, and metal-free conditions, exhibiting substantial potential for industrial-scale applications.

Highly Efficient and Complete Degradation Strategy of Polyethylene Terephthalate Fibers Using a Synergistic Deep Eutectic Solvent/Alkali System Under Mild Conditions

Zhang Lele,Sun Yi,Yang Haiwei,Sun Wanlin,Kuai Long,Wang Zongqian

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) textile waste, which is resistant to degradation, contributes significantly to environmental pollution. Currently, traditional methods, such as high-temperature and high-pressure treatments, microwave heating, etc. exhibit low initial degradation rates for polyester fibers while also facing challenges such as high energy consumption, complex degradation products, and difficulties in subsequent reuse. Thus, research on efficient recycling and sustainable development of PET waste has become imperative. Here, we report a novel method to degrade PET fibers completely at low temperatures within 1 h. A synergistic hydrolysis system consisting of a deep eutectic solvent (ChCl–EG DES) composed of choline chloride and ethylene glycol, along with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was used to facilitate the highly efficient and complete degradation of polyester fibers under mild conditions. The degradation process can be conducted at temperature below 100 °C, achieving a degradation rate of up to 100%, with the degradation product being sodium terephthalate, which exhibits a high purity of 99.85% and can be directly reused as a raw material without complex treatments and purification steps. The degradation kinetic of polyester fibers fits first-order reaction, with an activation energy of 108.59 kJ/mol. Overall, this study provides a green, low-cost, and energy-saving strategy with practical application value for efficient degradation and recycling of polyester fibers.

Gummy-inspired natural eutectogels with high adhesiveness, toughness and humidity response

Zhiyang Li,Zhaolin Ge,Qize Chen,Yifei He,Jin Wu,Zhuang Xie

Biogel-based ionic devices have emerged as versatile platforms for broad applications in wearable electronics, healthcare monitoring and bioelectronic interfaces. Electronic functions derived from fully edible natural soft materials are particularly attractive to allow low cost, green, biocompatible and biodegradable devices in biomedical areas as well as smart food package. This work presents a gummy-inspired protein eutectogel by simply soaking gelatin hydrogels into solutions of natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) consisting of sorbitol and citric acid to allow solvent exchange. Compared with the gelatin hydrogel, this natural eutectogel (NEG) exhibited anti-drying and anti-freezing performance, remarkably improved adhesiveness, room temperature degradability, as well as high mechanical toughness. The soaking conditions were investigated to tune the softness and ionic conductivity of the NEG, which revealed that the water content and acid ratio could significantly impact on the gel properties. Additionally, the eutectogel thin film exhibited good humidity sensing capability with a wide linear detection range (22%–98% RH), in which a soft patch was further demonstrated for breath test to detect various respiration frequencies. Thus, we believe the concept of NEG combining biopolymers and NADES can be explored in a broad range of soft devices for sensing, bio-adhesives, energy supply or drug delivery. Graphical
