A prevalent group of disinfection by-products (DBPs), i.e., haloacetic acids (HAAs), have raised significant public concern due to their high frequency of occurrence, considerable concentrations and potent toxicity. This study investigated the environmental occurrence of HAAs and the corresponding predicted human exposure to two important water matrices where humans are frequently and long-term exposed, i.e., swimming pool waters (SPWs) and drinking waters (DWs), in Shanghai, China. The sum of five HAAs in SPWs was 241 μg L−1 on average (dominated by dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA)), four times as much as its maximum contaminant level (MCL) regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in DWs. The maximum HAA concentration in DWs was 35 μg L−1, with chloroacetic acid (CAA) as the most dominant compound. The higher concentrations (reflected by total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and UV254) and more categories (body fluids and personal care products in addition to natural organic matter) of organic contaminants and the higher chlorine in SPWs should be responsible for the differentiated HAA yield and speciation. The qualification rates of samples have been evaluated. The power function models correlating HAAs with multiple water quality parameters were developed with correlation coefficients of 0.614 and 0.798 for SPWs and DWs respectively. These models may provide the preliminary insights on how to minimize HAA formation by grasping the relative importance of each parameter and how to build the framework to predict HAA formation in untreated source water or SPWs subjected to chlorination. The predicted carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of humans exposed to SPWs and DWs with HAAs were within the acceptable levels.

To discover an applicable technology for urea abatement from swimming pool water (SPW), this study compared the performances of seven ultraviolet (UV)-based technologies on urea removal, including UV alone, UV coupled with hydrogen peroxide (UV/H 2 O 2 ), sulfite (UV/Na 2 SO 3 ), potassium persulfate (UV/K 2 S 2 O 8 ), a combination of UV and vacuum UV (UV/VUV), and UV/VUV in tandem with either H 2 O 2 (VUV/H 2 O 2 ) or potassium persulfate (VUV/K 2 S 2 O 8 ). Among them, UV and UV/Na 2 SO 3 showed little removal ability, and UV/H 2 O 2 removed only 12.8% of urea within 3-h experiments, while UV/VUV degraded 71.7% of urea without introducing substantial total dissolved solids (TDS). Therefore, UV/VUV was considered as a promising technology for further exploration. In comparison, although UV/K 2 S 2 O 8 exhibited higher urea removal than UV/VUV, it caused dramatic increases of TDS, which made the regulatory threshold for the TDS increment difficult to maintain. Within UV/VUV studies, some common components in SPW (e.g., cyanuric acid , humic acid , nitrate, and bicarbonate) inhibited the removal process, whereas chloride and sulfate facilitated it, while free chlorine at doses ≤ 3 mg-Cl 2 /L and pH levels from 6.8 to 8.0 imposed little impact on urea degradation. Overall, UV/VUV degraded 40.0% and 22.2% of urea from tap water and SPW, respectively; both were lower than the efficiency observed in ultrapure water. As for reaction byproducts, urea phototransformation via UV/VUV yielded nitrate and ammonia as the key products with the mass balance of nitrogen element being met. However, the contents of organic carbon decreased at a rate slightly lower than urea degradation, suggesting that urea was mostly mineralized and slightly converted to unknown organic compounds. The results hence demonstrate that UV/VUV is an effective alternative for urea removal from SPW.

Swimming pool disinfection by-products (DBPs) have aroused widespread concern in many countries due to their adverse human health effects. In this study, the concentration levels of several kinds of DBPs including trihalomethanes, haloacetonitriles and trichloronitromethane were determined in 35 outdoor swimming pools in Hunan, China. The main water parameters investigated in this study included free residual chlorine, total organic carbon, pH, urea, UV254, total nitrogen and temperature. The management and operation of pools were comprehensively investigated as well. The results showed that the mean concentrations of trihalomethanes, haloacetonitriles and trichloronitromethane in the swimming pools were 21 ± 14 μg L−1, 2.1 ± 1.4 μg L−1 and 0.91 ± 0.51 μg L−1, respectively. Chloroform was the most predominant DBP species detected, and dichloroacetonitrile was the most predominant nitrogenous DBP (N-DBP) species detected. Free residual chlorine and pH might be critical factors in controlling the occurrence of DBPs. Showering before entering the pool could reduce the organic matter from swimmers, and this practice seemed to be an effective way to reduce the formation of DBPs. It is worth noting that urea, as one of the most predominant organic nitrogen compounds in human sweat and urine, had a high concentration in the investigated swimming pool samples. The cancer risks of DBPs in these outdoor swimming pools were lower than the US EPA guidelines in general, while the harm of DBPs couldn't be overlooked at high concentrations.

Quantification of regulated and emerging disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in swimming pool water, as well as the assessment of their lifetime health risk are limited in China. In this study, the occurrence of regulated DBPs (e.g., trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids) and emerging DBPs (e.g., haloacetonitriles, haloacetaldehydes) in indoor swimming pool water and the corresponding source water at a city in Eastern China were determined. The concentrations of DBPs in swimming pool water were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that in source water. Lifetime cancer and non-cancer risks of DBPs stemming from swimming pool water were also estimated. Inhalation and dermal exposure were the most significant exposure routes related to swimming pool DBP cancer and non-cancer risks. For the first time, buccal and aural exposure were considered, and were proven to be important routes of DBP exposure (accounting for 17.9%-38.9% of total risk). The cancer risks of DBPs for all swimmers were higher than 10 −6 of lifetime exposure risk recommended by United States Environmental Protection Agency, and the competitive adult swimmers experienced the highest cancer risk (7.82 × 10 −5 ). These findings provide important information and perspectives for future efforts to lower the health risks associated with exposure to DBPs in swimming pool water.

A reversed-phase isocratic elution high-performance liquid chromatography method coupled with fluorescence detection has been developed to determine urea concentration via online postcolumn derivatization. Swimming pool water samples were filtered through 0.20 μm syringe filters. When the temperature of reaction coil was 40°C, urea was derivatized well with xanthydrol methanol solution (0.1 g/L) containing 0.50% hydrochloric acid with a flow rate of 0.20 mL/min. Successful separation was achieved by using Shim-pack VP-ODS C18 (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) column, with a mobile phase containing phosphoric acid solution (0.01 mol/L) at a flow rate of 0.80 mL/min. Retention time and external standard method were used for qualitative and quantitative urea analysis, respectively. Under the established conditions, the limit of detection, linear range, correlation coefficient, recovery and relative standard deviation was 0.09 mg/L, 1.0–100.0 mg/L, 0.9998, 87.0–105.3% and 0.95–4.8%, respectively. Ammonia, thiourea and trichloroisocyanuric acid did not interfere with urea analysis. The method showed satisfactory results with high precision, accuracy, recovery, as well as sensitivity, for the determination of urea in swimming pool water.

A novel porphyrin-based magnetic covalent organic framework (PCOF) was first reported by using a facile synthetic procedure. The Fe 3 O 4 @NH 2 @PCOF nanospheres were utilized to effectively extract personal care products in a wide polarity range (log K ow values from 1.96 to 7.60). The successful magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of target analytes could be ascribed to the sufficient oxygen-, nitrogen- and phenyl-containing functional groups of the COF layer, which are demonstrated to be of good compatibility with pollutants exhibiting different polarities by using molecular dynamics simulations , independent gradient model analysis and various characterizations. The MSPE extraction efficiency was enhanced by optimizing key parameters. The findings indicated that the method had a wide linearity range (1–500 ng mL −1 for parabens and UV filters) and low detection limits (0.4–0.9 ng mL −1 for parabens and 0.2–0.6 ng mL −1 for UV filters). The accuracy was reflected by recoveries ranging from 74% to 114%. Satisfactory intra- and inter-day precisions from 3.0% to 9.8% and 0.5%–9.1% were obtained. Overall, the proposed MSPE-HPLC method is accurate and reliable for identifying parabens as well as UV filters in wastewater and swimming pool water. The potential of the method for evaluating human exposure risk was unfolded.

In China, urea degradants are often used in combination with chlorine in swimming pool water to remove urea. Here we report the first study about the impacts of urea degradants on urea degradation, disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation and estimated DBP-associated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Firstly, four groups of typical DBPs from six real indoor swimming pools were analyzed. The concentration of DBPs in swimming pool waters was about 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that source tap water. Notably, a rapid increase in DBPs was observed after urea degradant treatment. Simulated processes of urea removal using three commonly used urea degradants were therefore conducted in laboratory. Neither urea degradant nor chlorine alone removed urea effectively within 48 h. When applied in combination, urea degradant with sufficient chlorine rapidly removed urea by 100% within 3 h, and anti-chlorourea oligomer in urea degradants was the main contributor. Meanwhile, a remarkable increase in DBPs, especially brominated DBPs, was observed due to bromide introduction by urea degradants. For this reason, bromine incorporation factor (BIF) of DBPs dramatically increased. For instance, the BIF of dihaloacetic acids increased by 2665%-4025% after applying three urea degradants. As the highly toxic brominated DBPs were generated, attention should be paid into the potential DBP-related health risks from the use of urea degradants together with chlorine.

Human body fluids related pollutants (BFPs) are primary precursors to disinfection by-products (DBPs) in swimming pool water (SPW). This study evaluated the degradation efficiency of ultraviolet/vacuum ultraviolet (UV/VUV) technology for the removal of three typical BFPs: urea, creatinine, and hippuric acid. The results showed that UV/VUV irradiation significantly enhanced the removal of these pollutants compared to UV alone. In addition, the observed rate constant (k obs ) of the UV/VUV system was 1.9–8.0 times higher than that of the UV/H 2 O 2 system, accompanied by a substantial 89.6 % reduction in the electrical energy per order (EEO). Urea degradation primarily involved the cleavage of C-N and C-H bonds within the urea molecule induced by VUV photolysis, whereas the degradation of creatinine and hippuric acid was mainly driven by a series of reactions (including decarboxylation, demethylation, hydroxylation, and ring opening) initiated by •OH. pH variations within the range of 6.8–8.2 exerted minimal impact on pollutant removal. However, NO 3 , humic acid, and cyanuric acid obviously inhibited the removal of BFPs. Employing UV/VUV system as a pretreatment step prior to chlorination disinfection led to a noteworthy reduction of 63.6 %-69.1 % of the adsorbable chlorine in actual SPW. Results of this study presented a green, chemical-free, and operationally simple method to mitigate DBPs formation in SPW.

Trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) is a popular disinfectant for swimming pools in China. However, the occurrence and importance of regulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in TCCA-disinfected swimming pools are less understood. This study analyzed 12 regulated DBPs (4 trihalomethanes (THMs), 5 haloacetic acid (HAAs), bromate , chlorate, and chlorite) in 85 swimming pool water samples and 17 input tap water samples from one swimming pool for 17 days continuously. Considering water temperature, pH, free chlorine, total chlorine, and urea, most of swimming pool water samples were within the water quality limits for China. Total concentrations of THMs, HAAs, and inorganic DBPs of 20.4–42.2, 82.0–229, and 100–729 μg/L in the swimming pool, and 16.6–28.3, 8.2–12.8, and 64.4–95.6 μg/L in the tap water, indicating inorganic DBPs are the dominant swimming pool and drinking water pollutants. Cancer risk values of regulated DBPs in swimming pools and input tap water are 2.7E-05 and 8.1E-05, respectively, and exceed the US EPA's threshold (1.0E-06). The non-cancer risk is below the US EPA's threshold. Following TCCA disinfection, the concentration and calculated cytotoxicity of regulated DBPs had a 3.6-fold and 1.9-fold increase, respectively. Inorganic DBPs contribute to the calculated concentration and cancer risks of DBPs in swimming pools and tap water at sufficient concentrations warranting regulation. This study provides data on 12 regulated DBPs in TCCA-disinfected indoor swimming pools, highlighting the importance of inorganic DBPs from evidences of concentration, cytotoxicity, and cancer risk for the first time.

2,4,6-trihalorophenol disinfection by-products (DBPs) have strong toxicity to be needed for monitoring. In this study, two kind of molecularly imprinted polymeric fibers were prepared using 2,4,6-trichlorophenol as template and tricuronic phloroglucinol (MOP) as pseudo-template, respectively. The two fibers were assembled as solid phase microextraction (SPME) fiber to extract 2,4,6-trihalophenol DBPs from water and detect them by gas chromatography coupled to electron capture detector (GC-ECD). The results of F-test and t-test stated that there are significant difference in the analytical results of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol between using the fiber based on 2, 4, 6-trichlorophenol as template and MOP as pseudo-template. It was found that the carry-over of template (2,4,6-trichlorophenol) leaked from the fiber in GC thermal desorption, resulting in the wrong quantitative analytical result for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in water. Hence, molecularly imprinted polymeric fibers based on MOP as pseudo-template was applied for the determination of 2,4,6-trihalophenol DBPs in water combined with GC-ECD. The selectivity of the fiber for 2,4,6-trihalophenol DBPs was investigated and demonstrated. Under the optimized condition, the method has much lower limit of detection (0.5–1.1 pg mL −1 ) than most reported methods. The method was applied for the determination of 2,4,6-trihalophenol DBPs in environmental water and the relative recoveries were found to be in the range from 77.1% to 105.6% and the relative standard deviation was 0.5–9.4%. 2,4,6-tribromophenol was found at concentration of 0.054 ng mL −1 in a swimming pool.

The increasing demand for trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) in swimming pool disinfection highlights the need to evaluate its applicability in terms of disinfection by-product (DBP) formation. Nevertheless, there is limited understanding of DBP formation and control during TCCA disinfection, particularly concerning the effects of various management parameters. This study aimed to fill this knowledge gap by comprehensively investigating DBP formation during TCCA chlorination, with a particular focus on assessing the contribution and interaction of influencing factors using Box-Behnken Design and response surface methodology. Results indicated that the concentrations of trichloroacetaldehyde, chloroform, dichloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and dichloroacetonitrile produced by TCCA disinfectant were 42.5%, 74.0%, 48.1%, 94.7% and 42.6% of those by the conventional sodium hypochlorite disinfectant, respectively. Temperature exhibited the most significant impact on chloroform formation (49%), while pH played a major role in trichloroacetaldehyde formation (44%). pH 2 emerged as the primary contributor to dichloroacetic acid (90%) and trichloroacetic acid (93%) formation. The optimum water quality conditions were determined based on the minimum total DBPs (pH = 7.32, Temperature = 23.7 °C, [Cl − ] = 437 mg/L). Chlorine dosage and contact time exhibited greater influence than precursor concentration on chloroform, dichloroacetonitrile, trichloroacetaldehyde, trichloroacetic acid, and total DBPs. Although the interaction between water quality parameters was weak, the interaction between disinfection operating parameters demonstrated substantial effects on DBP formation (8.56–19.06%). Furthermore, the DBP predictive models during TCCA disinfection were provided for the first time, which provides valuable insights for DBP control and early warning programs.
