Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used as a tertiary treatment technology, and the addition of carbon sources can significantly improve advanced nitrogen removal. However, excessive carbon sources would lead to an increase in the effluent chemical oxygen demand in CWs, and microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can convert these into electricity. In this study, constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs) were built to achieve simultaneous nitrogen removal and electricity generation, using wetland plant litter fermentation broths as carbon sources. The total nitrogen removal in the groups with fermentation broth addition (FGs) reached 83.33%, which was 19.64% higher than that in the CG (group without fermentation broth), and the mean voltages in the FGs were at least 2.6 times higher than that of the CG. Furthermore, two main components of the fermentation broths, acetic acid (Ac) and humic acid (HA), were identified using a three-dimensional excitation emission matrix and gas chromatograph and added to CW-MFCs to explore the influence mechanism on the treatment performance. Denitrification and electrogenesis presented the same tendency: Ac&HA > Ac > CG’ (groups without Ac and HA). These results indicate that Ac and HA increased the abundance of functional genes associated with nitrogen metabolism and electron transfer. This study demonstrated that CW-MFC fermentation broth addition can be a potential strategy for the disposal of secondary effluent and bioelectricity generation.

Microplastics (MPs) are gaining attention for their widespread presence and toxicity in ecosystems. However, their role as a carbon source in urban wetland carbon sinks is still unclear. In this study, the microplastic-carbon (MP-C) was firstly quantified based on the abundance and occurrence characteristics, including MP morphology, size and type in the Sanyang Wetland, a typical urban wetland of China. MP abundances ranged from 2.4 ± 0.6–14.9 ± 1.5 items/L in surface water and 6.6 ± 1.2 × 10 3 to 46.3 ± 5.9 × 10 3 items/kg in sediment. The predominant morphological characterization of MPs was fragments smaller than 200 μm in size, consisting of PP, PE, and PET, which suggests that the main source was domestic wastewater discharge nearby. Notably, in the Sanyang wetland, the contribution of MP-C to total organic carbon (TOC) was estimated to be 0.023 0.20 % in water and 0.026 0.28 % in sediment. With the continuous production of plastics globally, these values were predicted to increase to 0.12 0.71 % and 0.83 4.12 % by 2100, respectively. Although the estimations relied on simplified geometric assumptions for MP volume and theoretical carbon content, these approaches provide a reasonable basis for understanding MP-C dynamics in wetlands under current analytical constraints. The integration of MP-C characterization during environmental monitoring and management strategies would enhance our understanding of MP pollution's role in the carbon cycle.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) or iron/manganese (hydro)oxides were important factors in the migration of Cd in sediments of wetlands. DOM and Fe oxides simultaneously affect the longitudinal and transverse migration of Cd in wetlands sediments of plants was still unclear. In this study, a 14-day rhizobox experiment was conducted and the result showed that the rhizosphere effect of Cd migration was only limited to the upper layer of sediments (− 2 to − 4 cm). Fe with fulvic acid (FA) simultaneously existed can precipitate Cd(II) from supernatant to sediments downward. Fe oxides at sediment concentration could effectively prevent Cd(II) from migrating to root surface (0.21 vs 0.02 at%). While Fe oxides with FA together at sediment concentration could effectively promoted the migration of Cd(II) to root surface (0.07 vs 0.08 at%). The formation of organo-metallic complexes of Fe in the presence of FA profoundly proved this finding (increased by ~33.0%). And the polysaccharides and aromatics in organic matter were the chief functional groups participating in the incorporation of Cd and Fe oxides. The findings reveal the migration rules of Cd(II) in sediments by FA and Fe oxides and give an insight into the mechanisms of Cd(II) migration to the root surface around wetland plants.

The role of mussels in laboratory-scale constructed wetlands (CWs) where wastewater was contaminated with five typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (three 3-ring PAHs and two 4-ring PAHs) was investigated in this study. The CWs performance and PAHs removal mechanisms were well studied. Results indicated that these five PAHs improved removal efficiencies of NO 3 -N but in the case of NH 4 -N accumulation occurred. Of the five added PAHs, the 4-ring PAHs were more refractory with higher concentrations in effluent than 3-ring PAHs. By monitoring the five PAHs concentration in water, mussels had excellent removal efficiency of the five PAHs (97%). According to the mass balance calculation, mussels promoted plant uptake of five PAHs, contributing 15.2% of five PAHs removal in CWs. The PAHs could also accumulate in mussels through ingested substrate. Thus, mussels presented a positive correlation with five PAHs purification at a depth of 0–10 cm in substrate, which was 34.7 μg/kg lower than the control group. Due to the purification and enhanced aerated degradation, mussels performed better in removing 3-ring PAHs in substrate, decreasing 8.3% for 3-ring PAHs compared to the control. A positive correlation between five PAHs addition and nirS , nrfA genes was observed. However, PAHs showed negative impact on nitrifying bacteria ( amoA ). The significant correlations between mussels and five PAHs made it possible to improve CWs for PAHs treatment with aquatic faunas.

Microplastics (MPs) are widely detected in wetlands as emerging pollutants of global concern. Co-occurrence of MPs and trace metals in wetlands is common and the vector effects of MPs on other environmental pollutants have been increasingly reported. However, the interaction of different MPs and trace metals under environmentally realistic conditions is not well understood. Here, we investigated the adsorption capacity of MPs for metals under simulated conditions of Poyang Lake wetlands in Jiang Xi, China, a Ramsar site of international importance for conservation and sustainable use. ICP-MS was used to quantify the amount of adsorbed metals onto different types of MPs. SEM-EDS and micro-FTIR were used to examine the morphological and chemical characteristics of MPs before and after metal adsorption. The influence of internal (polymer types and particle sizes of MPs) and external factors (water pH values, organic matters, ion strength, and sediment) on metal adsorption was systematically investigated. Metal adsorption equilibrium was most achieved at 72 h. The adsorption capacity of MP types to metal ions tended to decrease as PP > PE > PS, and the amount of adsorbed metals decreased as Cu > Pb > Cd. The amount of adsorbed metals generally decreased with the increase of particle size of MPs. With the increase of water pH and K + strength, the adsorption of metals by MPs showed an increasing and then decreasing trend; the adsorption capacity of MPs increased with the increase of fulvic acid. Under the simulated sedimentary conditions, the adsorption of different metals by MPs also tended to be Cu > Pb > Cd, which was mainly determined by metal concentrations in the sediments collected in situ . The results of this study improve our understanding of metal-MP interaction under simulated environmental conditions, shedding new light on the environmental behavior of MPs and metals in wetlands.

Wetland plants are proven to perform well in water treatment . However, the phytoremediation capability of wetland plants for antibiotics, especially the uptake and metabolism involved in vivo, is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the removal, uptake, and specific metabolism by Canna indica and Iris pseudacorus of five sulfonamides (SAs) using hydroponic experiments for seven days. The removal of SAs ranged from 15.2% to 98.4% in the planted groups, whereas that in the unplanted control group was much lower (12.6%–39.9%). The accumulation of SAs in plants was in a concentration-dependent manner via an active process and is not a major removal mechanism (constituted 0.31%–3.62% of the total removal load in plant system). The results also showed differences in the removal and accumulation by plant species of SAs. The acetyl conjugates (N-acetyl SA) were formed, which significantly enhanced the uptake of SAs ( P < 0.001) except sulfapyridine. The concentrations of N-acetyl SA accounted for only 0.4%–23.8% of the total SAs distribution in plants, suggesting the involvement of other metabolism pathways. Methylation and oxidation metabolites were identified in plant tissues and no SA-induced growth stress occurred, revealing that antibiotic metabolism in vivo should be associated with the ability of wetland plants to accumulate antibiotic and tolerate antibiotic stress.

Under the present investigation, removal capacities and influential factors of four heavy metals (HMs) (Cu, Pb, Cr, and Ni) by three wetland vegetations, i.e. Canna indica, Dracaena sanderiana, Cyperus alternifolius, were conducted to assess their feasibility and reliability to collocate into an ecological vegetation-activated sludge process (V-ASP) for HMs contained wastewater treatment. The maximum specific Cu, Pb, Cr, and Ni removal rate of D. sanderiana, C. indica, C. indica, and C. alternifolius was 17.6, 6.39, 19.09, and 7.05 mg/kg WW-d, respectively. Co-existence of organic and nitrogenous pollutants and their content fluctuation affected significantly on Cu, Pb, and Ni removal efficiency, and moderately on Cr removal. A weak alkaline (7.5–8.0) in bulk favored Cu and Pb removal, while a weak acidic (~6.5) was beneficial to Ni elimination. Vegetation roots had a much higher HMs concentration than their stems and leaves, and continuous HMs accumulation within vegetation decreased its photosynthesis rates, and made various morphological changes, although which would be recovered under proper conditions. Evidences of stable HMs removal by proper vegetation collocation give direct guideline for V-ASP configuration, which have profound significance for its practical application.

Micro/nano-sized plastics (MPs/NPs) existing in wastewater system are the potential threats to nitrogen (N) biotransformation. Constructed wetlands (CWs) as wastewater treatment systems are considered the important barriers preventing MPs/NPs from entering the open water. However, little is known about how the accumulation of MPs/NPs affects microbial N transformation, dynamics, assembly, and metabolism of wetland microbiota. Herein, we constructed 12 wetland systems to address the above knowledge gaps over 300-day exposure to different sizes (3 mm - 60 nm) and concentrations (10 - 1000 μg/L) of MPs/NPs. The results showed that MPs/NPs accumulation caused decrease in NH 4 + -N removal (by 7.6% - 71.2%) and microbial diversity and intriguingly altered microbiota composition (especially in the high-concentration groups) without damage on the high removal efficiency of NO 3 − -N and NO 2 − -N (66.2% - 99.8%) in all except for the nano-sized plastic-exposed wetlands. Moreover, MPs/NPs exposure induced shift in the strengths of non-random species aggregation and segregation patterns co-differentiated by the size and concentration of MPs/NPs, and MPs/NPs accumulation created size-differentiated alternative niches for nitrogen-transforming bacteria, e.g., canonical nitrifiers ( Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas ) and denitrifiers ( Thauera, Comamonas , and Aquabacterium ), which were enriched in MPs groups where denitrifying enzyme-coding genes were also enriched, suggesting potential positive impact of larger plastics on denitrification. Our study highlights MPs/NPs-induced divergence in microbiota dynamics and nitrogen transformation in CWs, and provides important insights into how microbiota structurally and functionally respond to long-term MPs/NPs disturbance.

In order to clarify the distribution, sources, and ecological risk of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments of mangrove wetland located in Shantou, twenty eight surface sediments were collected. The concentration of PAHs ranged from 79.74 to 853.17 ng g −1 dry weight. The concentration of PAHs of sediment in the high tides was higher than that in the low tides and higher in mangrove-planting area than that in non-mangrove growth zone. The spatial distribution of PAHs in the sediment of mangrove wetland was mainly influenced by input sources and tidal currents . The result of the principal component analysis-multiple linear regression model indicated that the major source of PAHs in the studied area was coal burning. However, the adverse effect of PAHs was weak to biota. Undeniably, a lot more systematic explorations are demanded in future to investigate the PAHs contamination in the mangrove wetlands in small–medium cities with the development of coastal zone economy.

The use of wetland plants in the context of phytoremediation is effective in the removal of antibiotics from contaminated water. However, the effectiveness and efficiency of many of these plants in the removal of antibiotics remain undetermined. In this study, the effectiveness of two plants— Phragmites austr alis and Iris pseudacorus —in the removal of tetracycline (TC) in hydroponic systems was investigated. The uptake of TC at the roots of I. pseudacorus and P. australis occurred at concentrations of 588.78 and 106.70 μg/g, respectively, after 7-day exposure. The higher uptake of TC in the root of I. pseudacorus may be attributed to its higher secretion of root exudates , which facilitate conditions conducive to the reproduction of microorganisms. These rhizosphere-linked microorganisms then drove the TC uptake, which was higher than that in the roots of P. australis . By elucidating the mechanisms underlying these uptake-linked outcomes, we found that the uptake of TC for both plants was significantly suppressed by metabolic and aquaporin inhibition, suggesting uptake and transport of TC were active (energy-dependent) and passive (aquaporin-dominated) processes, respectively. The subcellular distribution patterns of I. pseudacorus and P. australis in the roots were different, as expressed by differences in organelles , cell wall concentration levels, and transport-related dynamics. Additionally, the microbe-driven enhancement of the remediation capacities of the plants was studied comprehensively via a combined microbial-phytoremediation hydroponic system. We confirmed that the microbial agents increased the secretion of root exudates, promoting the variation of TC chemical speciation and thus enhancing the active transport of TC. These results contribute toward the improved application of wetland plants in the context of antibiotic phytoremediation .

Mn oxides could realize persistent organic pollutants (POPs) removal through the cycle of Mn between Mn(II) and biogenic Mn oxides in constructed wetlands (CWs) filled with Mn oxides. However, the inefficient cycle of Mn caused by the limited oxidation ability of Mn oxides inhibited its effective degradation of POPs. Ruthenium (Ru) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulfonate (ABTS) could act as electron shuttles in catalytic Mn oxides oxidation process. In this study, phenanthrene (PHE) was selected as a typical POP and biochar (BC) supported Ru (Ru/BC) and ABTS (ABTS/BC) were induced in CWs with Mn oxides (birnessite). The removal efficiencies of PHE in CWs with Ru/BC and ABTS/BC reached 94.61% and 95.51%, higher than the control (79.91%). ABTS performed best for enhancing Mn cycle based on the results of highest oxidation removal capacity and relative abundance of Mn-oxidizing bacteria. What’s more, the addition of Ru/BC contributed to the best adsorption ability and highest relative abundance of PHE degrading bacteria.

Although constructed wetland (CW) technology is widely used to eliminate emerging organic pollutants, the removal pathway of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in CW system have not been fully understood yet. This study aims to deeply probe into the fate and behavior of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in CW system. Findings indicated that the removal efficiency of PFOA by CW system was 49.69–73.63 % with initial concentrations at 100–1000 μg/L. Substrate was the main “sink” of PFOA into the CWs (46.22–50.83 %), and the plant uptake (1.99–2.48 %) accounted for a small proportion. Transformation products in the effluent of CW systems included a series of short-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs), hydrogen-containing perfluoroalkanes and other organic fluorides. Activated pathways of xenobiotics biodegradation suggested that enzyme-mediated biochemical reactions might be responsible for the PFOA transformation. The transformation pathway included enzymatic decarboxylation , hydroxylation, hydrolysis, dehydrogenation and dehalogenation, as well as non-enzymatic reactions. These discoveries provide new insights into the in-depth understanding environmental behavior of PFOA in ecosystem and lay the foundation for further ecological remediation.
