Hydro-actuation of hybrid carbon nanotube yarn muscles

Xiaogang Gu,Qingxia Fan,Feng Yang,Le Cai,Nan Zhang,Wenbin Zhou,Weiya Zhou,Sishen Xie

Hybrid hydro-responsive actuators are developed by infiltrating carbon nanotube yarns using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate). These actuators demonstrate impressive rotation and contraction in response to water due to volumetric expansion of the helical arrangement of carbon nanotubes. The total torsional stroke is 3720 revolutions per m and the simultaneously generated contractive strain reaches 24% at a paddle-to-yarn mass ratio of 350. The contraction output can furthermore be significantly enhanced by constraining the rotational motion and it reaches 68% with an applied stress of 1 MPa. Additionally, hybrid yarns exhibit an approximately linear response to humidity changes and show extra capability of electrical actuation, which, combined with the excellent hydro-actuation performance, endow them with great potential for a variety of applications including artificial muscles, hydro-driven generators, moisture switches and microfluidic mixers.

Super-Flexible Water-Proof Actuators

Wei Liu,Xi Yang,Guilong Yan,Li Wang,Jingjuan Lai,Zhenyu Li,Chunxia Zhao,Dong Xiang,Hui Li,Yuanpeng Wu

Humidity-responsive materials hold broad application prospects in sensing, energy production, and other fields. Particularly, humidity-sensitive, flexibility, and water resistance are pivotal factors in the development of optimized humidity-responsive materials. In this study, hydrophobic linear polyurethane and hydrophilic 4-vinylphenylboronic acid (4-VPBA) form a semi-intercross cross-linking network. This copolymer of polyurethane exhibits excellent humidity-sensitive, mechanical properties, and water resistance. Its maximum tensile strength and maximum elongation can reach 40.56 MPa and 543.47%, respectively. After being immersed in water at various temperatures for 15 days, it exhibited a swelling ratio of only 3.28% in water at 5 °C and 9.58% in water at 70 °C. While the presence of 4-VPBA network imparts humidity-sensitive, reversible, and multidirectional bending abilities, under the stimulus of water vapor, it can bend 43° within 1.4 s. The demonstrated material surpasses current bidirectional humidity actuators in actuating ability. Based on these characteristics, automatically opening waterproof umbrellas and windows, as well as bionic-arms, crawling robots, and self-propelled boats, are successfully developed.

Bionic Diffractive Meta-Silk Patch for Visually Flexible Wearables

Kaiyi Dong,Meng Wei,Qian Zhou,Bingfang He,Bingbing Gao

Rapid humidity response contributes tremendously to visually flexible wearables. However, sluggish response, infrequent reproducibility, and biotoxicity restrict the development of wearable humidity response devices. Here, inspired by the changes in the color of Dynastes hercules , a flexible wearable, rapid response, stretchable, rewritable meta-silk fibroin diffractive film (mSFD) is presented. The film is generated by spin-coating silk protein and polyurethane (PU) cross-linking, followed by hot pressing of meta-structures. Owing to the diffraction and stable combination of the SF β -structure and PU hydrogen bond, mSFDs exhibit excellent coloration, rapid response, and erasability. Notably, the microcolumns and microporous structures on the meta-membrane endow the membrane with unparalleled rapid response features. Fast color disappearance and reappearance are observed under high humidity conditions (response time <2 ms, cycle in 1 s). In particular, the rapid humidity responsiveness of mSFP induces a change in the color of the membrane, which enables its application in real-time biomonitoring (wound management, mask regulation) and anticounterfeiting (medicine storage, fingerprint recognition). These properties endow bioinspired mSFD P with high potential in the field of robotic skin.

Strong and anti-freezing alginate-based hydrogel with humidity response and wide-temperature-range strain sensing ability

Lin Zou,Xiang Liu,Hongmin Liu,Xiaozhen Zhang,Eric Euchler,Chuntai Liu,Baobao Chang

To get strong and anti-freezing hydrogel with multiple contact and non-contact sensing performance, a facial method is proposed in this work using multiple physical bonding crosslinking and glycerol (GL) immersing strategy. The obtained hydrogels show a tensile stress at break of 5.4 MPa, an elongation at break of 1420 %, and a compression strength of 12.2 MPa at 80 % strain. Additionally, benefiting from the GL immersing the hydrogel shows superior anti-freezing (no ice formation at −60 °C) and water retention ability (water loss less than 17 % after storing at 50 °C for 7 h). Furthermore, the volume resistance of hydrogels exhibits excellent responses against humidity, temperature, strain, and stress. The variation of the resistance against temperature can be well described by the Arrhenius equation with an activation energy of 501.3 meV, verifying a band-gap dominated diffusion hopping conductive mechanism of the hydrogel. The sufficient humidity and temperature responses make the hydrogel applicable as a non-contact sensor, and the wide temperature strain sensing (−40 to 50 °C) and stress sensing capability ensures that the hydrogel can be used as a contact sensor, ensuring that the hydrogel can be used as perfect flexible sensor for monitoring human motion and physiological signals.

Smart Ti3C2Tx MXene Fabric with Fast Humidity Response and Joule Heating for Healthcare and Medical Therapy Applications

Xing Zhao,Li-Ya Wang,Chun-Yan Tang,Xiang-Jun Zha,Yong Liu,Bai-Hai Su,Kai Ke,Rui-Ying Bao,Ming-Bo Yang,Wei Yang

An increasing utilization of flexible healthcare electronics and biomedicine-related therapeutic materials urges the development of multifunctional wearable/flexible smart fabrics for personal therapy and health management. However, it is currently a challenge to fabricate multifunctional and on-body healthcare electronic devices with reliable mechanical flexibility, excellent breathability, and self-controllable joule heating effects. Here, we fabricate a multifunctional MXene-based smart fabric by depositing 2D Ti3C2Tx nanosheets onto cellulose fiber nonwoven fabric via special MXene–cellulose fiber interactions. Such multifunctional fabrics exhibit sensitive and reversible humidity response upon H2O-induced swelling/contraction of channels between the MXene interlayers, enabling wearable respiration monitoring application. Besides, it can also serve as a low-voltage thermotherapy platform due to its fast and stable electro-thermal response. Interestingly, water molecular extraction induces electrical response upon heating, i.e., functioning as a temperature alarm, which allows for real-time temperature monitoring for thermotherapy platform without low-temperature burn risk. Furthermore, metal-like conductivity of MXene renders the fabric an excellent Joule heating effect, which can moderately kill bacteria surrounding the wound in bacteria-infected wound healing therapy. This work introduces a multifunctional smart flexible fabric suitable for next-generation wearable electronic devices for mobile healthcare and personal medical therapy.

Bio-inspired synergistic humidity-responsive photonic system for security printing and information encryption

Jia He,Yuming Zang,Huateng Li,Jia Guo,Changchun Wang

The proliferation of counterfeiting necessitates an urgent need for enhanced technique to safeguard the authenticity of sensitive items. Inspired by the elytra of Tmesisternus isabellae beetles, we designed a new synergistic humidity responsive photonic system (SHRPS) for security printing based on high quality photonic paper and active ink. The photonic paper itself is not sensitive to humidity; only the targeted areas activated by the active ink exhibit humidity responsiveness. We investigated factors influencing humidity responsiveness, including monomer composition, pH of active ink, and treatment period. We found the optimal monomer mixture contains 40% acrylic acid, and the active ink pH is 13. We also applied a scalable method to fabricate photonic paper, successfully overcome the challenge of large-scale fabrication of photonic crystals at room temperature. By integrating the perfect pair of SHRPS and inkjet printer, concealed information with various sizes and resolutions can be printed, invisible in ambient humidity and revealed by blowing air, presenting various humidity responsive ability of SHRPS for multilevel information encryption, which opens a new window for security printing system.

Hygro-responsive, Photo-decomposed Superoleophobic/Superhydrophilic Coating for On-Demand Oil–Water Separation

Wenting Kong,Feiran Li,Yunlu Pan,Xuezeng Zhao

The superoleophobic/superhydrophilic material has attracted considerable interest due to the incomparable property of it for the oil–water separation. However, it is a challenge to make the prepared surface superoleophobic and superhydrophilic at the same time since the oleophobic surface tends to repel water. Herein, a hygro-responsive superoleophobic/superhydrophilic coating was fabricated by liquid-phase deposition of TiO2 with perfluorooctanoic acid. The wettability of the coating could complete the transformation from superoleophobicity/superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity, both of which exhibit excellent selective superwettability under the air, underwater, salt, alkali, and acid conditions. The hygro-responsive coating can separate different types of oil–water mixtures, and the separation efficiency could be over 99% using different capillary forces acting on the oil and water phases before and after wettability transformation. Last but not least, long-chain perfluoroalkyl substances on the coating could be decomposed by UV irradiation, which could reduce the harm to the environment and human beings. It is anticipated that the developed superoleophobic/superhydrophilic coating provides a feasible solution for the application of oil–water separation.

Moisture-responsive ultralow-hysteresis polymer ionogels for adhesion-switchable strain sensing

Yichen Zhou,Xing Zhang,Ying Zheng,Junfeng Liu,Yongzhong Bao,Guorong Shan,Chengtao Yu,Pengju Pan

Adhesion-switchable ultralow-hysteresis polymer ionogels are highly demanded in soft electronics to avoid debonding damage and signal distortion, yet the design and fabrication of such ionogels are challenging. Herein, we propose a novel method to design switchable adhesive ionogels by using binary ionic solvents with two opposite-affinity ionic components. The obtained ionogels exhibit moisture-induced phase separation, facilitating switchable adhesion with a high detaching efficiency (>99%). Moreover, before and after phase separation, the viscoelastic behavior of the ionogels is maintained in the rubbery plateau region within common frequency ranges with ultralow mechanical hysteresis (∼3%) under large strain, enabling accurate and stable strain and pressure sensing. Accordingly, the ionogel films can be used as functional elements in a smart clamp to realize flytrap-like selective activation, based on high sensitivity to the vibration intensity from the targeted prey. This work may inspire future research on the development of advanced soft electronics.

Hydrophilic domains compose of interlocking cation-π blocks for constructing hard actuator with robustness and rapid humidity responsiveness

Yicheng Li,Mengqi Du,Li Yang,Yunjia Bao,Yewei Xu,Qiang Yin,Yang Lan,Guanjun Chang

Biomimetic actuators have seemingly infinite potential for use in previously unexplored areas. However, large stresses and a rapid water response are difficult to realize in soft actuators, owing to which their practical applicability is currently limited. In this paper, a new method for designing and fabricating humidity-responsive sturdy hard actuator. By combining a rigid matrix and hydrophilic water domains consisting of dynamic interlocking cation-π blocks, high-performance polymer actuator was synthesized that swell rapidly in response to a water gradient in their environment, resulting in unprecedentedly large stresses. More critically, the strong interlocking cation-π blocks reform and the intermolecular distance is reduced when the water is removed, allowing the deformed actuator to revert its original shape. The proposed design principle can potentially be extended to produce different types of sturdy actuators with rapid water responsiveness.

Three birds with one stone: Design and synthesis of polyurethane actuator for executing heat, light and humidity triggered deformation

Xiaolei Yue,Chen Dong,Yucheng Wang,Zhishuai Cui,Zhihui Ren,Zheng-Hui Guan

Intelligent actuation materials are widely utilized as parts of soft robots, smart sensors and other applications, due to their response to external stimuli (such as heat, light, magnetism, humidity, etc.). Yet preparing a single polymer material with multi-stimuli responsive functions remains challenging and less explored. Herein, we have explored a novel multi-stimuli responsive intelligent actuating polyurethane material, AzoPU50, through one-pot co-polymerization of 4,4′-bis (6-hydroxy-hexoxy) azobenzene (BHHAB), polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) and 4,4′-methylene bis (phenyl isocyanate) (MDI) at a ratio of 1:1:2. This novel material can respond to three types of stimuli to trigger shape deformation movements. The intrinsic microphase separation structure of polyurethane can afford thermal responsive shape memory performances. Furthermore, the variation in the configuration of azobenzene units endows the polyurethane film with good light-responsive deformation. Most importantly, this polyurethane actuator can also achieve humidity-responsive movements including flipping motion on a wet filter paper, bending deformation driven by the palm and finger, etc. In addition, a biomimetic device that integrated the heat, light and humidity stimuli together to imitate human gestures of praise was successfully assembled. This work provides a new strategy for constructing actuators with triple-functions and will pave a way for further development of multi-stimuli-responsive smart actuating devices and other intelligent materials/systems.

Transfer-Printing Hydrogel-Based Platform for Moisture-Driven Dynamic Display and Optical Anti-Counterfeiting

Manchun Zheng,Yang Shen,Lin Zheng,Xiaoyi She,Chongjun Jin

Humidity-responsive materials offer a promising approach to achieving tunable metasurface systems due to their fast and reversible swelling responses to moisture, which enables many important applications, such as real-time humidity sensing, optical switches, dynamic displays, and optical information encryption. However, the humidity-responsive structural coloration generally cannot provide a high spatial resolution and requires a complex patterning process. Here, we present a scalable moisture-driven color-changing Fabry–Pérot (FP)-like cavity composed of a polyvinyl alcohol layer sandwiched between an upper gold nanoparticles assembly and a bottom gold mirror. Through nanoparticle contact printing, we pixelated these cavities with sub-micrometer sizes without crosstalk and achieved an ultrahigh display resolution of ∼400 nm. Meanwhile, these nanoparticle-based FP (NBFP) cavities exhibit more vibrant colors than those of conventional film-based ones due to broadband absorption of the disordered nanoparticle assembly. Moreover, the NBFP cavities exhibit a rapid response (<300 ms), benefiting from the membrane pores formed in the gaps between the adjacent nanoparticles. Finally, we demonstrated the applications of the NBFP cavities in optical anti-counterfeiting and dynamic multi-color printing. These results suggest that our approach will help to realize a colorful, fast, and ultrahigh-resolution dynamic display device in optical security and colorimetric sensing.

Biomimetic Photonic Elastomer Exhibiting Stress/Moisture Reconfigurable Wrinkle-Lattice for Reversible Deformation Information Storage

Ruicheng Lin,Donghui Kou,Lei Gao,Shi Li,Zhaoyong Gao,Xuefen Li,Wei Ma,Shufen Zhang

Photonic elastomers, capable of converting imperceptible deformations into visible colors, show significant potential in smart materials. However, instantaneous deformation is arduous to record accurately due to the disappearance of optical information after deformation recovery. Herein, inspired by the folding structures of iridocytes in cephalopods, a stress- and moisture-triggered wrinkling and erasure effect is proposed to be introduced in the construction of a photonic elastomer. Implemented in a dual-network polymer framework with modulatable locking, it allows for reversible deformation storage. The photonic elastomer comprises a surface one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC) and a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrate. The deformed 1DPC lattice transforms into a wrinkled state due to a substrate deformation mismatch, preserving strain-induced structural color information through interchain hydrogen bonding and crystalline shape-locking in dual-network polymers. Reading the color provides multidimensional information about the instantaneous deformation degree and distribution. Moreover, the moisture-induced shape-memory feature of the 1DPC can be triggered with a minute amount of water, like fingertip perspiration or humidity change (35% to 80%), to restore the original color. This stress/moisture-responsive photonic elastomer, with its dynamically reconfigurable wrinkle-lattice, holds great promise for applications in mechanical sensing, inkless writing, and anticounterfeiting, significantly enhancing the versatility of photonic materials.
