La doped AlPO-5: Enhenced NH3 sensing properties, thermodynamic investigation and humidity-enhanced effect

Luyu Wang,Yunling Wu,Junkuo Gao,Jia Song

Solid AlPO-5 and La doped AlPO-5 (La/AlPO-5) were synthesized by a hydrothermal treatment followed by crystallization and calcination . The ammonia (NH 3 ) sensing properties of AlPO-5 and La/AlPO-5 were evaluated by using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) platform to work out the enhanced effect of La doping treatment. La/AlPO-5 possessed a higher response to NH 3 than that of AlPO-5 with same concentration. In addition to the favorable sensitivity, La/AlPO-5 based sensor also showed prominent repeatability and selectivity. We also explored the thermodynamics and humidity-enhanced effect in the NH 3 sensing process.

Sensitive Breath Acetone Detection Based on α-Fe2O3 Nanoparticles Modified WO3 Nanoplate Heterojunctions

Chenyang Yu,Jianhong Liu,Hongchao Zhao,Mengqing Wang,Jing Li,Xiaopeng She,Yi Chen,Yangjie Wang,Bochao Liu,Cheng Zou,Yong He,Yong Zhou

Acetone plays a critical role in environmental protection and human healthcare, thus necessitating sensitive and selective detection. In this regard, a resistive microelectromechanical system (MEMS) acetone sensor featuring a sensing layer of $\alpha $ -Fe2O3 nanoparticles modified tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanoplates is utilized in this work. After optimizing the composition proportion and operating temperature, the Fe/W:0.2 sensor delivered a wide detection range (0.05–80 ppm), and an approximately sevenfold higher response of 40.6 toward 10 ppm acetone at $217~^{\circ }$ C than pure WO3 analog. In addition, a limit of detection (LoD) of 50 ppb was achieved, which ranks among the lowest cases thus far. Together with excellent repeatability, selectivity, and long-term stability, the sensor also showed a humidity-enhanced response. This work offers an alternative strategy to realize trace acetone detection within high-humidity conditions and showcases a huge application potential in exhaled breath-involving diabetes monitoring in the future.

Performance enhanced triboelectric nanogenerator by taking advantage of water in humid environments

Dong Liu,Jinmei Liu,Maosen Yang,Nuanyang Cui,Haoyu Wang,Long Gu,Longfei Wang,Yong Qin

Improving the performance of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) in environment with high humidity is critical for their applications in blue energy, humidity sensing, implantable nanodevice etc. Here, we report a kind of humidity-resisting TENG (HR-TENG) by using polyvinyl alcohol/lithium chloride (PVA/LiCl) as the triboelectric layer, the output of which is much enhanced (~5 times) with the increase of relative humidity (RH, from 20% to 99%). Abundant hydroxyl groups in PVA can fix water molecules to form more tribo-positive surface polarity, and LiCl can regulate the water absorption ability of PVA/LiCl film. The combined effect brings in numbers of wrinkle microstructure on its surface and synchronously decreases its modulus, enabling more efficient contact. Charge density of the HR-TENGs are higher than 115 μC/m 2 in a wide range of RH (from 60% to 99%), especially, reaches a maximum value of 244 μC/m 2 in 90% RH, which is much larger than the highest value 110 μC/m 2 among reported HR-TENGs (RH>50%). Moreover, the PVA/LiCl based TENGs can be acted as power source in high RH (93%) condition and respiratory monitoring sensor for human physiological monitoring. These results provide an efficient way for TENG with high output in high humidity environments.

Moisture-Permeable, Humidity-Enhanced Gas Barrier Films Based on Organic/Inorganic Multilayers

Jiajie Wang,Xiaozhi Xu,Jian Zhang,Mengting Chen,Siyuan Dong,Jingbin Han,Min Wei

Gas barrier films with water-vapor-permeability have exhibited broad application prospects in gas separation and dehumidification. Herein, multilayer films comprised of layered double hydroxides (LDH) nanosheets and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) were fabricated via layer-by-layer assembly. The resulting (LDH/CMC)n films show excellent gas barrier properties, which are ascribed to the significantly increased pathway for gas permeation originating from the large aspect ratio and high orientation of two-dimensional LDH nanosheets. Unlike traditional gas barrier films with nonselective blocking effect for various gases (including water vapor), the (LDH/CMC)n films exhibit an unusual moisture permselective property. The moisture-permeable property was related to the hygroscopicity of CMC and hydrophilicity of LDH, which can enrich the water molecules from the surroundings and aggrandize the osmotic pressure for water vapor, resulting in an uncommon improvement of water vapor transmission. It is interesting to find that the (LDH/CMC)n films exhibit enhanced gas (O2, CO2, CH4, and N2) barrier properties upon treatment in a humid environment, due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the infiltrated water molecules and hydrophilic groups in CMC, thus padding the interstitial space of the CMC molecular chains and increasing the gas transmission path. The reduction of free volume and extension of the gas transmission path further enhance the gas barrier properties of (LDH/CMC)n films. Moreover, the (LDH/CMC)n films represent the water vapor permselective property in mixed gas (including O2, CO2, CH4, N2, and water vapor), while maintaining the barrier for other gases, which can be potentially applied in air dehydration and dehumidification of natural gas.

A Wearable Fiber Sensor Employing MXene/In2O3 Composites for NH3 Detection in Kidney Disease Diagnosis

Jiabei Li,Shuo Li,Lijuan Xie,Ziyao Wang,Xi Yang,Donghang Li,Xiaohong Li

Continuous and reliable monitoring of ammonia (NH 3 ) biomarkers in exhaled breath holds critical significance for the diagnosis of kidney diseases. However, existing NH 3 sensors often suffer from interference by ambient water molecules, limiting their applications in monitoring exhaled breath with high humidity. In this work, a water-vapor-assisted sensing mechanism is proposed, and a humidity-enhanced flexible NH 3 sensor capable of detecting NH 3 at concentrations as low as 250 ppb in exhaled breath is developed. By integrating hydrothermally synthesized indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles with delaminated monolayer MXene (Ti 3 C 2 ) nanosheets, a stable heterojunction structure is constructed, which underpins the sensor's performance. Through a streamlined integration strategy, the MXene/In 2 O 3 composite is combined with cotton fibers to fabricate a flexible and wearable NH 3 sensor. This device demonstrates superior gas-sensing characteristics under ambient temperature and high-humidity conditions, yielding a response of 70.64% and a response time of 178 s. Furthermore, the flexible sensor is embedded into a KN95 mask to develop an intelligent breath analysis system. By applying machine learning algorithms to model and classify breath samples, a detection accuracy of 94% in real-world clinical testing is achieved. These results underscore the sensor's substantial potential for non-invasive early screening and home-based diagnosis of kidney diseases.
