Preparation of Quaternized Bamboo Cellulose and Its Implication in Direct Air Capture of CO2

Chenglong Hou,Yusong Wu,Tao Wang,Xinru Wang,Xiang Gao

The substantial increase of the atmospheric CO2 concentration over the last few decades has steered toward research on direct air capture (DAC). DAC is one of the mobile-source carbon capture and storage (CCS) processes that is variant from the conventional point-source CCS in terms of easing the CO2 concentration levels and promoting negative carbon emission. We propose here a sustainable material based on the quaternization of bamboo fiber and the implication in DAC. The quaternized bamboo cellulose could adsorb CO2 at a medium relative humidity (RH) of 60–80%, with the efficiency of quaternary ammonium groups over 0.65. The CO2 capacity at higher RH strikingly decreased, which indicates the moisture-swing characteristics, and that was further validated by a desorption ratio of 0.70 under humid gas purge. The unique phenomenon that a dry atmosphere (e.g., RH < 20%) is not favored by adsorption was revealed and could be attributed to the hydrophobic feature of the sorbent inherited from natural lignocellulose. The results suggest that quaternized cellulose with a low cost may open up new possibilities for the utilization of moisture-swing CO2 adsorbents in damp circumstances.

Super-elastic smart phase change material (SPCM) for thermal energy storage

Haiquan Zhang,Zijing Liu,Junping Mai,Ning Wang,Jie Zhong,Xianmin Mai,Nan Zhang

Super-elastic phase change materials (SPCMs), as brand-novel smart materials, have a wide range of potential applications in stress induction, thermal energy storage and temperature control. Polyacrylamide-based [email protected] _12h SPCMs with an ultimate tensile ratio greater than 500% were synthesized for the first time by a popular molecular self-assembly technology. In-situ polymerized polyacrylamide (PAM) builds a reversible deformable three-dimensional network, while the filled PEG2000 PCMs form hydrogen bonds with its amino group (–NH 2 ). 260% tensile ratio is impossible to cause obvious liquid leakage for the [email protected] form-stable phase change material, even exceeding the melting temperature of the PEG2000 PCM. Reversible PAM–NH 2 ⋯O–PEG hydrogen bond can also reduce the sensitivity of the polyacrylamide-based hydrophobically associated hydrogel (HAH) to air humidity fluctuations. Volumetric deformation ratio of the as-prepared PCM gel is close to zero during water vapour adsorption/desorption, which is much lower than that of the HAH without PEG2000 (20 vol%). Water molecules entering the self-prepared SPCMs are preferentially adsorbed by the PAM 3D architecture, which significantly improves the anti-interference ability of the PEG PCMs. The outstanding comprehensive performance makes the [email protected] SPCMs have great potential in the future.

Hygroscopic-Evaporative Generator for Multiform Energy Harvesting from Environment and Food Storage

Tao Yang,Zhuorui Han,Bin Su,Xingyu Lin

Moisture-enabled electricity generation (MEG) has gained increasing attention in recent years. However, most current systems rely exclusively on ambient relative humidity, exhibiting low output power and limited operational stability under fluctuating environmental conditions. Inspired by the natural process of plant transpiration—which efficiently circulates water using environmental stimuli such as humidity, sunlight, and wind—this study reports a hygroscopic-evaporative generator (HEG) capable of constantly converting ambient moisture into electricity. The HEG consists of a Lithium-Cellulose-based hygroscopic layer rich in mobile Li⁺ ions and a high-surface-area evaporative layer. Electricity generation is driven by spontaneous water adsorption on one side and directional water evaporation on the other, establishing a Li⁺ ion flow across the device. A single HEG unit delivers a peak voltage exceeding 1.0 V, a peak current of 0.8 mA, and a maximum power density of 1.506 mW cm − 3 . By harvesting supplemental solar and wind energy, the HEG exhibits enhanced power output and stable performance even under large day-night humidity fluctuations. Furthermore, the device effectively scavenges bio-moisture from fruit respiration, enabling the generation of 1.2–1.4 V and significantly prolonging fruit shelf life, underscoring its durability and practical relevance for real-world applications.

Circadian humidity fluctuation induced capillary flow for sustainable mobile energy

Tang Jiayue,Zhao Yuanyuan,Wang Mi,Wang Dianyu,Yang Xuan,Hao Ruiran,Wang Mingzhan,Wang Yanlei,He Hongyan,Xin John H.,Zheng Shuang

Circadian humidity fluctuation is an important factor that affects human life all over the world. Here we show that spherical cap-shaped ionic liquid drops sitting on nanowire array are able to continuously output electricity when exposed to outdoor air, which we attribute to the daily humidity fluctuation induced directional capillary flow. Specifically, ionic liquid drops could absorb/desorb water around the liquid/vapor interface and swell/shrink depending on air humidity fluctuation. While pinning of the drop by nanowire array suppresses advancing/receding of triple-phase contact line. To maintain the surface tension-regulated spherical cap profile, inward/outward flow arises for removing excess fluid from the edge or filling the perimeter with fluid from center. This moisture absorption/desorption-caused capillary flow is confirmed by in-situ microscope imaging. We conduct further research to reveal how environmental humidity affects flow rate and power generation performance. To further illustrate feasibility of our strategy, we combine the generators to light up a red diode and LCD screen. All these results present the great potential of tiny humidity fluctuation as an easily accessible anytime-and-anywhere small-scale green energy resource.
