Boron nitride dots In-situ embedded in a B2O3 matrix with the long lifetime Room-Temperature phosphorescence in dry and wet states

Shenghui Han,Gang Lian,Xu Zhang,Zhaozhen Cao,Qilong Wang,Deliang Cui,Ching-Ping Wong

Developing metal-free room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with ultralong lifetimes in dry and wet states simultaneously has been widely concerned due to their potential applications, which is also a tough challenge up to now. Herein, a smart construction strategy is proposed to in-situ embed boron nitride dots (BNDs) into an isogenous B 2 O 3 matrix. The BND-based materials exhibit unexpected bluish-green RTP in solid and various wet conditions (water, oxidants, organic solvents, strong acids and bases). The RTP lifetime of them in powder is as long as ~ 1.7 s, lasting over 10 s to naked eye. B 2 O 3 matrix can not only uniformly disperse the BNDs in it, but also provide a rigid environment via forming hydrogen-bonded and covalently bonded interactions between them to strongly stabilize the triplet states excitions on the dots from nonradiative deactivation. More interestingly, RTP quenching of the BND-based powder in various solutions is effectively suppressed because the B 2 O 3 matrix is not collapsed in them. For instance, the RTP lifetime in water is as long as ~ 0.9 s. Based on the distinctive RTP properties in dry and various harsh wet states, the applications of the BND-based RTP materials in multi-level anti-counterfeiting and information encryption are demonstrated.

Deciphering the alignment of vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes in wet state using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Liwei Ding,Han Lu,Zijie Luo,Guobao He,Mingliang Jin,Xin Wang,Guofu Zhou,Lingling Shui,Eser Metin Akinoglu

Vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (VA-MWCNTs) display a structural transformation when transitioning from dry to wet states, often collapsing into angled conical structures. This study probes whether such a transition arises inherently from liquid immersion or because of the drying process. Utilizing Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) with gold caps on VA-MWCNTs tips, deposited through a modified Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD) technique, and Rhodamine 6 G as a molecular probe, we analyze the alignment dynamics of VA-MWCNTs between their wet and dry states. Comparative SERS data from freshly immersed and previously wetted-dried VA-MWCNTs revealed superior Raman enhancement in the angled conical structures. Hence, we conclude that the nanotubes largely retain their vertical stance in liquid environments but undergo an irreversible deformation during the drying process due to (partial) MWCNT severance from the substrate base. This insight is pivotal for applications sensitive to VA-MWCNTs' wet-dry transitions.

Environmental-friendly bio-based thermosetting non-isocyanate polyurethane adhesive with enhanced bonding strength

Zhaosheng Huang,Chen Qin,Hanxiang Guo,Hao Yuan,Yizhong Cao,Zhe Wang,Chunde Jin

Although Non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) is a burgeoning environmental-friendly material, however, due to the water absorption capacity of NIPU, the wet bonding strength of NIPU was often not ideal when used as an adhesive in the field of wood-based panel. Amine terminated hyperbranched siloxane (HPSi), endows the material with excellent bonding properties, while combining the superiority of the rich and adjustable terminal groups of hyperbranched polymers as well as water proof properties of siloxanes. Therefore, the addition of HPSi during the synthesis of NIPU could enhance it's wet adhesive strength to a certain extent. In the study, the NIPU modified with HPSi (NIPU.Si) adhesives were synthesized from glycerol triglycidyl ether, CO 2, bio-based diamine Priamine 1074 extracted from vegetable oil, Diethylenetriamine(DETA) and Amine-terminated Hyperbranched Siloxane (HPSi) synthesized by (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane(KH550) and Trimethoxyphenylsilane(PTMS) in a relatively sustainable synthesis route to improve the wet bonding strength of NIPU. The synthetic NIPU.Si(5 %) adhesive exhibits a good wet bonding strength of 1.93 MPa, representing a 34.0 % growth compared to NIPU.Si(0 %). Additionally, the synthetized NIPU.Si(5 %) adhesive shows wide applicability to different substrates, good adaptability to extreme cold temperatures, good adaptability to high temperatures aging as well as solvent resistance due to strong cohesion and high-density hydrogen bonds formed at the interface of the substrate. This study reports a new method to enhance the bonding performance of NIPU through introducing HPSi with high-density hydrogen bonds, avoids using any hazardous chemical raw materials and solvents, meets the criteria of cleaner production, further expands the application of NIPU in wood-based panel, cleaner production and other industries fields.

Biocompatible, transparent, and water-resistant adhesive films with high mechanical stability derived from post-facile chemical cross-linking

Dan Wang,Jianfu Zhang

Transparent surgical adhesives with excellent underwater adhesion and mechanical strength are strongly desirable for various biomedical applications such as wound closure and tissue healing. This is addressed in the present work by the development of biocompatible, transparent, and water-resistant adhesive films prepared from catechol-modified ε-poly(ʟ-lysine) and dopamine hydrochloride modified sodium hyaluronate layers successively applied using the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method. The LbL-assembled films are easily released from substrates via a mechanical exfoliation method with a blade to obtain free-standing multilayer films . The exceptional wet adhesion properties of the catechol groups yield films with excellent underwater adhesion strength . The underwater stability and mechanical strength of the free-standing multilayer films are improved via post-facile chemical cross-linking using biocompatible N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride. The post-treated free-standing multilayer films achieve a tensile strength of 0.36 ± 0.20 MPa and an elongation at break of 180.05% in water. The free-standing multilayer films exhibit a high optical transmittance greater than 55% in the visible region.

Anti-liquid-Interfering and Bacterially Antiadhesive Strategy for Highly Stretchable and Ultrasensitive Strain Sensors Based on Cassie-Baxter Wetting State

Jing Lin,Xianfang Cai,Zili Liu,Nan Liu,Min Xie,BingPu Zhou,Huaquan Wang,Zhanhu Guo

As a large number of strain sensors are put into practical use, their stability should be considered, especially in harsh environments containing water or microorganisms, which could affect strain sensing. Herein, a novel strategy to overcome liquid interference is proposed. The strain sensor is constructed with a sandwich architecture through layer-by-layer (LBL) spray-coating of a 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) bonding layer and multi-walled carbon nanotubes/graphene (MWCNT/G) conductive layers on an elastomeric polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) substrate, and is further decorated with silver (Ag) nanoparticles and the (heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetradecyl) trimethoxysilane (FAS, F in short) to obtain a F/Ag/MWCNG/G-PDMS (FAMG) strain sensor. The superhydrophobicity and underwater oleophobicity of the outer cover layer causes this FAMG strain sensor surface to exhibit stable strain sensing resistant to liquid interference upon stretching in the Cassie−Baxter wetting state, and resistance to bacterial adhesion ( Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli )). The sensor attains ultrasensitivity (with a maximum gauge factor of 1989 in the condition of liquid interference), broad strain range (0.1–170%), fast response time (150 ms), and stable response after 1000 stretching–releasing cycles. The ultrasensitivity is provided by propagation of cracks in MWCNT/G conductive layers and terminal fracture of the intermediate separating layers (APTES/MWCNT/G). The microbridge effect of MWCNTs and slippage of APTES/MWCNT/G provide a large strain range. The FAMG strain sensor is successfully used to monitor a series of human activities and an electronic bird under artificial rain and bacterial droplets, indicating the potential use of this sensor in complex environments.

The synergy between natural polyphenol-inspired catechol moieties and plant protein-derived bio-adhesive enhances the wet bonding strength

Wang Zhong,Zhao Shujun,Song Ruyuan,Zhang Wei,Zhang Shifeng,Li Jianzhang

Novel soybean meal-based biomimetic (STP) adhesives were fabricated via soybean meal (SM) and enhanced by tannic acid (TA) and polyetheylenimine (PEI) (TAPI) co-crosslinking network based on natural polyphenol-inspired chemistry. The multiple physico-chemical interactions (including intermolecular H-bonding and covalent bonding) between the TAPI co-crosslinking system and SM matrices were examined by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, solid-state 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that a dense, robust, and water-resistant adhesive layer was constructed between network-bound catechol moieties in the TAPI and SM system, endowing the STP adhesive with high wet bonding strength for plywood. As expected, TAPI-modified SM adhesives showed a 156.1% increase in wet bonding strength compared to the control SM adhesive. The adhesion meets standard requirements for interior-use plywood. Both the solid content and residual mass analysis also confirmed that the enhancement in the STP adhesive was attributable to the network crosslinking density and stiffness after integrating the TAPI system. Moreover, the thermal stability of the resultant STP adhesive exhibited a significant improvement. The proposed STP adhesive may be a promising cost-effective and wet-resistant bio-adhesive for the application in the wood composites industry.

Systematic experiments and multiscale simulation calculations reveal chemical stability differences in dry/wet nanofiltration membranes

Meng-Han Miao,Jin-Kai Qiu,Zhen-Liang Xu,Cheng Lian,Hong-Lai Liu,Jia-Hui Li,Yong-Jian Tang

This study investigated the chemical stability differences between dry and wet nanofiltration membranes when immersed in strong acid and base environments. Systematic experimental studies were conducted on both types of nanofiltration (NF) membranes, supplemented by Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The results indicate that wet NF membranes, soaked in deionized water for a week, exhibit higher chemical stability compared to dry membranes treated only with air. Traditional air heating causes membrane pore contraction and excessive crosslinking. However, after a week of immersion in water, the polyamide (PA) layer gradually becomes a loose and well-extendable PA layer. MD simulations revealed that H + and OH − ions possess lower diffusion coefficients and extended residence times in dry NF membranes, making them more prone to damage. Additionally, DFT calculations disclosed that the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) for amide bond hydrolysis in wet NF membranes, in the presence of water molecules, is elevated, significantly delaying their hydrolysis rate under extreme conditions. This study highlights the pivotal role of membrane wetness in the chemical durability of NF membranes and offers a novel perspective for improving membrane lifespan and efficiency.

Collagen-based scaffolds with high wet-state cyclic compressibility for potential oral application

Yi-Yu Wang,Jia-Ping Huang,Shu-Lei Fu,Yao Jiang,Tan Chen,Xiao-Yang Liu,En-Wei Jin,Yan Dong,Zheng-Ke Wang,Pei-Hui Ding

Soft tissue substitutes have been developed to treat gingival recessions to avoid a second surgical site. However, products of pure collagen for clinical application lack their original mechanical strengths and tend to degrade fast in vivo . In this study, a collagen-based scaffold crosslinked with oxidized sodium alginate (OSA-Col) was developed to promote mechanical properties. Compared with commercial products collagen matrix (CM) and collagen sponge (CS), OSA-Col scaffolds presented higher wet-state cyclic compressibility, early anti-degradation ability, similar hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. Furthermore, in the subcutaneous implantation experiment, OSA2-Col3 scaffolds showed better anti-degradation performance than CS scaffolds and superior neovascularization than CM scaffolds. These results demonstrated that OSA2-Col3 scaffolds had potential as a new soft tissue substitute for the treatment of gingival recessions.

The synthesis and tissue adhesiveness of temperature-sensitive hyperbranched poly(amino acid)s with functional side groups

Dedai Lu,Yongyong Zhang,Ting'e Li,Yunfei Li,Hongsen Wang,Zhiqiang Shen,Qiangbing Wei,Ziqiang Lei

The incorporation of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) residues in mussel-like biomimetic copolymers has drawn great attention due to their adhesive properties. In this work, a series of temperature-sensitive and hyperbranched poly(amino acid)s containing different functional side groups (catechol, guanidyl, mercapto and double bond) were designed and synthesized by the ring-opening polymerization of N-carboxy-α-amino acid anhydride (NCA), using a temperature-sensitive and multi-hydroxyl end pluronic L-31 as the initiator in this process. The tissue adhesive properties of these copolymers were evaluated by tensile strength tests on wet pork skin. We found that the topological structure, side groups of copolymers, adhesive temperature and cure time had influence on the wet adhesive strength, especially side groups. While only L-DOPA was incorporated into copolymeric chains, the wet adhesive strength was about 106 kPa. With guanidyl, mercapto and double bonds incorporated into copolymeric chains, an obvious increase in the wet adhesive strength was observed. Additionally, the wet adhesive strength improved by about 20 kPa at body temperature (37 °C) as compared to that at room temperature (25 °C). Meanwhile, we found that it has good biocompatibility and degradability through its cytotoxicity and degradation tests.

Development and application of a high-performance underwater adhesive based on natural polyphenol/IPDI-modified epoxidized soybean oil

Jiali Kong,Yuanyuan Tu,Jiyong Wu,Shuyan Yan,Runkai Wang

Achieving high-strength, durable adhesion in extreme humid or submerged environments has long been a challenge in materials science. Traditional adhesives failed to meet the requirements for rapid wetting, strong interfacial locking, and long-term stability due to issues like hydration layer interference, hydrolysis instability, and curing difficulties. This study proposed a novel ternary design using polyphenol/IPDI-modified epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) to develop a polyphenol-based soybean oil adhesive modified by gallic acid, tea polyphenols, and tannic acid (GTSO), as well as its IPDI-introduced crosslinked derivative (GTSO-I), for underwater adhesion. This system offers environmentally friendly properties, strong interfacial compatibility, high adhesion strength, rapid curing, and long-term stability. The system incorporates three natural polyphenols—gallic acid (GA), tea polyphenols (TP), and tannic acid (TA)—to form synergistic hydrogen bonds, coordination bonds, and hydrophobic interactions at the underwater interface. These polyphenols enable a ring-opening reaction with the epoxy moiety of epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), creating a chemical framework that provides strong adhesion to wet substrates. IPDI was then introduced to form a dense crosslinked network, enhancing curing speed and stability. Experimental results showed that GTSO-I achieved a shear strength of 4.50 MPa on steel substrates, surpassing most reported underwater adhesives. After 30 days of immersion, it retained over 93 % of its initial adhesion strength and maintained a shear strength of over 3.2 MPa across a broad pH range (1-13) and in 2.0 mol/L NaCl solution. The adhesive showed rapid curing underwater and was compatible with various substrates, demonstrating potential for applications in pipeline sealing, hull repair, and biomedicine.

Tuning Dry and Wet Adhesion with a Branched Supramolecular Polymer Solution

Huan Yu,Runlin Zhang,Yong-Guang Jia,Yunhua Chen,Xuetao Shi

Endowing adhesives with both dry and wet adhesion to surfaces from hard substrates to soft biological tissues is challenging. Herein, a branched supramolecular polymer is introduced in dry- and wet-crosslinking forms to adaptively achieve dry and wet interfacial adhesion. The branched supramolecular polymer (PAMU) with multiple pendant functional moieties is prepared by one-pot reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The PAMU polymer solution can firmly adhere to glass sheets after the water evaporates. The aqueous solution of PAMU polymer with residual double bonds can be further polymerized to form a wet crosslinking network. The hydrogen bonding moieties endow the supramolecular network with self-healing properties, while the in situ polymerization of the PAMU polymer leads to stable adhesion to wet tissues. This study provides a promising approach to develop supramolecular adhesives for versatile adhesion applications.

Okara cellulose-based multifunctional sponge with wet elastic deformation recovery for antibacterial, hemostatic, and antioxidant properties

Zongyu Li,Jiaxin Zhao,Jiawei Fang,Xiaoyun Li,Xiaoying Wang

In the battlefield and emergencies, uncontrolled hemorrhage remains a primary cause of trauma-related deaths, while hemostatic materials still face technical bottlenecks in achieving multifunctional properties such as hemostasis and antibacterial activity. To address this issue, a multifunctional medical sponge was prepared using okara, a cellulose-rich agricultural by-product. First, Tempo oxidation technique was used to prepare oxidized okara cellulose (TOC). Subsequently, with TOC as a reducing and stabilizing agent, cerium oxide-nanosilver composite (CeO 2 @Ag) was synthesized. Finally, the TOC was crosslinked with N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide and introduced into a composite antibacterial agent (CeO 2 @Ag) to prepare a novel multifunctional sponge (TOC/N/CeO 2 @Ag). Furthermore, the sponges featured excellent porous structure (pore size 30–120 μm) and excellent elasticity (shape recovery 87.8 %) at wet state. The blood clotting index of the sponge was 13.6 %, and its hemostatic properties were significantly better than that of the commercially available PVF sponge (49.2 %). The inhibition rates of sponges for S. aureus and E. coli were 95.3 % and 96.4 %, respectively. Moreover, the composite sponge represented excellent blood, cell compatibility and antioxidant activity. This study can be used in fields such as rapid hemostasis and offers a sustainable and effective strategy for the high-value utilization of agricultural by-products.
