Advanced Janus Membrane with Directional Sweat Transport and Integrated Passive Cooling for Personal Thermal and Moisture Management

Yang Peng,Ju Yanshan,He Jiajun,Xia Zhengcai,Chen Liang,Tang Shaochun

Passive cooling holds tremendous potential in improving thermal comfort because of its zero energy consumption and cost-effectiveness. However, currently reported radiative cooling materials primarily focus on hydrophobic polymer films, inevitably leading to sweat accumulation and limited cooling efficiency in hot-humid environments. Herein, an advanced Janus membrane with excellent temperature–moisture management capabilities is developed, which combines radiative cooling and evaporative heat dissipation. Modification with Calcium sulfite (CaSO 3 ) nanoparticles not only enhances the optical properties (state-of-the-art solar reflectance of 96.6%, infrared emittance of 96.1%) but also improves the wettability of the polylactic acid fiber membrane. Especially 15% emittance improvement is achieved due to the strong infrared radiation ability of CaSO 3 . The membranes with opposite wettability realize the directional sweat transport (high one-way transport index of 945%). Excellent radiative cooling capability is demonstrated with sub-ambient cooling of 5.8 °C in the dry state. The Janus membranes covering sweaty skin exhibit a 46% shorter drying time and a 2 °C lower average evaporation temperature compared to cotton fabric, indicating highly efficient thermal and moisture management. This work provides an efficient route to achieving smart textiles that enable the human body to adapt to complex environmental conditions. Graphical Abstract

Simple post-treatment of cotton fabric for efficient personal moisture management

Maorong Zheng,Jiatai Gu,Hongxia Zhang,Xinyang He,Mantang He,Liming Wang,Xiaohong Qin

Wet comfort is an important indicator for evaluating human wearing comfort, and personal moisture management fabrics can quickly transfer sweat from the skin surface to meet the human body's requirements for wet comfort. Although cotton fabrics have an excellent water absorption capacity, the inability of moisture to transfer quickly causes the fabrics to cling to the skin and causes discomfort. Here we demonstrate personal moisture management cotton fabric by two-step grafting treatments, which are relatively simple and usually do not fall off as easily as a simple coating process. Moreover, unlike traditional double-layer or sandwich structures that absorb water and grow heavy, the fabric's quick-drying qualities are accomplished by expanding the area of water evaporation. According to the results of liquid moisture management and water evaporation rate tests, this fabric's moisture diffusion radius is 5 mm larger than that of pure cotton fabrics, and its evaporation rate can reach 0.2082 g/(m2 · d). In addition, it is also suitable for high-volume apparel fabrics. This work paves the way for personal moisture management cotton fabric.

An All-Nanofiber-Based Customizable Biomimetic Electronic Skin for Thermal-Moisture Management and Energy Conversion

Hao Yi,Zhang Yuxin,Li Jie,Guo Alan J.X.,Lv Pengfei,Wei Qufu

Developing electronic skin (e-skin) with extraordinary sensing capabilities through biomimetic strategies holds significant potential for distributed wearable electronics in the Internet of Things and human–machine interaction. However, moisture accumulation at the surface between e-skin and human skin severly affects the stability and accuracy of sensing signals. Thermal-moisture comfort and stable functional interfaces of e-skins are still great challenges that need to be addressed. Herein, inspired by the dual-sided structure of lotus leaf, we demonstrate an unidirectional water transport e-skin (UWTES) by constructing a gradient structure of porosity and hydrophilicity using one-step electrospinning thermoplastic polyurethane/poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (TPU/PVDF-HFP) with an alloyed liquid metal-based (LM-Ag) electrode. A UWTES textile-based triboelectric nanogenerator (UT-TENG) exhibits a maximum open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and power density of 188.7 V, 18.89 μA and 4.73 mW/m 2 , respectively. Additionally, a temperature visualization system for UWTES textile (TUWTES) enables real-time monitoring and displays of body temperature during intense physical activity. Through a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN), the gait motion recognition system achieves a highly accuracy of 99.7%. This design strategy provides new insights into the development of integrated smart textiles with improved thermal-moisture comfort and user-friendliness. Graphical

Durable antibacterial cotton fabric imitating skin wet management with synchronous liquid gating and directional liquid transfer

Jianhua Ma,Jia-Horng Lin,Yulei Feng,Xiaohua Huang,Shan Chi,Yanming Liu,Ching-Wen Lou,Ting Dong

Antibacterial textiles that repel external liquids while synchronously transport internal sweat to keep comfort moisture balance are desirable. However, very limited success has been achieved to construct such textiles. Herein, a facile approach to create durable antibacterial cotton fabric with skin-like wet management was proposed. The first step involved several minutes (< 5) dip-coating subsequently with PA and Cu 2+ , which afforded Cu enriched surfaces endowing highly efficient (99.95% in 2 h for E. coli , 99.99% in 2 h for S. aureus ) and durable antibacterial activity (> 99.95% after 50 times washing treatment). The following step further paved a way of skin-like wet management by the construction of dotted wetting gradient on superhydrophobic background via transient exposure to a vapor mixture of methylchlorosilanes and successive patterned plasma etching. The liquid could only be transferred in the direction of the wetting gradient and was stopped when the fabric was faced against it, featuring synchronous antifouling and unidirectional water transmission so as to avoid wet clicking of the fabric with high air permeability even in a wet environment. This study opens a way for developing advanced fabrics which voluntarily release human sweat and meanwhile restrain microbial development obviating bacterial infection.

Customizable bio-based coating of phase-transited lysozyme-COS for durable antibacterial and moisture management on wool fabric

Ning Zhang,Xiaohui Zhu,Qiang Wang,Man Zhou,Ping Wang,Yuanyuan Yu

Textiles with efficient moisture management provide a comfortable microenvironment for human body. However, little attention has been paid to sweat-induced bacterial growth alongside. In this study, chitooligosaccharide (COS) was used to modify lysozyme (Lyz-COS) to obtain more excellent antibacterial activity . Lyz-COS could undergo an amyloid-like aggregation by reducing its disulfide bond and hydrogen bond triggered by thiourea dioxide (TD). The Phase-Transited Lyz-COS (PTL-COS) coating increases the hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties of wool fabrics, which can withstand 50 washing cycles and 100 rubbing cycles. In addition, two methods are proposed to customize Janus wool fabrics as desired. Method 1: The PTL-COS film was prepared first, and then the film was transferred to one side of the wool fabric. Method 2: Simply spray the PTL-COS solution on one side of the wool fabric. These two processes are simple to operate and can be customized on demand, enabling single transport of sweat and inhibiting sweat-induced bacterial growth. This work underlines the significance of chitooligosaccharide-modified PTL coatings for functionalization of textile surfaces and provides new insights into the development of more adaptable and smarter textiles and clothing.

Skin-Inspired Zero Carbon Heat-Moisture Management Based on Shape Memory Smart Fabric

Zou Jing,Wang Yongzhen,Yu Xiang,Liu Rulin,Fan Weiqiang,Cheng Jing,Cai Weiyi

Excessive energy consumption, especially space heating and cooling, is one of the major challenges facing mankind. Smart heat-moisture management textiles can effectively regulate heat-moisture comfort between the environment and skin, greatly reducing energy consumption; these results are in line with sustainable development goals. In this work, a skin-inspired adaptive heat-regulating fabric based on heat-responsive shape-memory ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer fibres and traditional cotton fabric is used. Furthermore, single-sided hydrophobic finishing is introduced to provide the fabric with unidirectional moisture transport. Owing to the shape memory effect, the smart fabric has an environment-adaptive and responsive dynamic structure in the form of a heat-induced gap opening and cool-induced gap closing. As a result, the heat conductivity of the smart textile can be switched from 0.086 to 0.089 W/m·K. Moreover, the air permeability and moisture evaporation can be regulated between 443.5 mm/s, 1761.81 g/(d·m 2 ) and 461.7 mm/s, 1963.8 g/(d·m 2 ), reversibly and repeatedly; the unidirectional moisture transport capacity with a unidirectional moisture index of 193.2 can also be regulated to synergistically improve the heat-moisture comfort, and the entire process results in zero carbon emission. Moreover, we demonstrate the application of the smart adaptive fabric in heat-moisture management fields, attaining a cooling effect of 4.35 °C and a breathability difference of 89.6 mm/s; these values correspond to more than 30% building cooling and heating energy savings, and these results are in line with the sustainable and zero-carbon trends. The shape memory adaptive heat-moisture management fabric will likely have broad prospects in smart thermoregulation textiles, wearable fields, electronic skin, outdoor, medical, military, and energy-saving fields. Self-Adaptive Rapid Thermal Conductive Fabrics Based on Hygroscopic Shrinkage Response for Personal Cooling and Drying

Hongkun Liu,Yanan Xiao,Yang Shen,Qiuli Liu,Jiazi Hou

Advanced fabrics with thermal wet management capability as low energy consumption media contribute to personal cooling and drying. Nevertheless, it remains a great challenge to obtain intelligent fabrics with adjustable thermal conductivity (TC) capable of bridging the supply and demand between human body temperature and self-adaptive thermal conduction. Herein, we report hygroscopic-shrinkage nanofiber-based fabrics with excellent moisture sensitivity and significant volume shrinkage, which benefits the construction of high-density thermal conductive pathways by absorbing sweat, with a maximum sweat absorption rate reaching up to 1781%. The TC of the shrunken fabric is significantly increased from the initial 0.102 to 0.731 W·m–1 K–1 with a volume shrinkage rate of 89% due to the synergistic effect of van der Waals force, capillary force, viscous resistance, and gravity. Besides, an enhanced TC of the resulting fabrics facilitates rapid heat transfer to the environments. By capturing the surface temperature variations of the fabric after shrinkage and commercially available cotton/Coolmax, we obtained the fabric that releases the same amount of heat in a shorter period of time (3.3 s). With its exceptional personal thermal and wet management properties, this study paves the way for designing new-generation intelligent fabrics capable of creating more comfortable microclimates.

Engineering Janus cellulose fabric with unidirectional water transport capability toward perspiration-induced cooling human body

Fengjie Tang,Yinghao Bi,Pengyu Pan,Haodong Sun,Renzhong Wei,Kai Liu,Liulian Huang,Jianguo Li,Lihui Chen

Traditional cellulose fabric with high hydrophilic distinction realizes personal thermal management via perspiration-induced cooling for the human body. However, such behavior is restricted in high-humidity environments, where sweat/water transports from a high-humidity environment to the human body by hydrophilic cellulose fabric. Herein, we developed an environmentally friendly, low-cost, large-scale Janus cellulose fabric via one-side hydrophobic modification of hydrophilic cellulose. Our Janus cellulose fabric comprises hydrophobic cellulose side (water contact angle of 151°) and hydrophilic cellulose side (water contact angle of 19°). Such distinction endows Janus cellulose fabric with unidirectional water-transport capability, where water molecules are inclined to transport, diffuse and evaporate on the hydrophilic cellulose (diffusion area of 50 μl water is around 0.8 cm 2 ) rather than the hydrophobic cellulose (less and even negligible diffusion area), correspondingly spontaneously leading to a 3–4 ℃ temperature drop of the human body when covering Janus cellulose fabric than pristine cellulose fabric. Janus cellulose fabric paves the way toward green, cost-effective, and cooling fabric in our sustainable society.

Tailoring Differential Moisture Transfer Performance of Nonwoven/Polyacrylonitrile-SiO2 Nanofiber Composite Membranes

Aijaz Ahmed Babar,Xianfeng Wang,Nousheen Iqbal,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Liquid moisture (sweat) transport properties of textile materials play critical role in maintaining the comfort of body which are mainly controlled by surface chemistry, structure, and morphology of substrate. Herein, a dual layer surface treated nonwoven (NW)/electrospun nanofiber membrane with excellent differential liquid moisture transport characteristics is reported. NW is used as inner layer for its high moisture releasing and low moisture absorbing features, and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as outer layer because of its decent hydrophilic nature. Wettability of NW is tailored by surface treatment with polydopamine, and the wicking characteristics of PAN nanofibers are enhanced by inducing hydrophilic SiO 2 nanoparticles (PAN-SiO 2 ). Performance of resultant surface treated NW (TNW)/PAN-SiO 2 nanofiber composite membranes is thoroughly characterized by moisture management tester (MMT). Subsequent composite membranes offer high wettability gradient which leads to their marvelous MMT performance with an outstanding one-way transport capacity of 1413%, excellent overall moisture management capacity of 0.99, and a decent water vapor transfer rate of 12.73 kg m −2 d −1 , indicating a potential candidate for faster sweat release applications.

Yang Chen,Feng Gao,Rumin Liu,Jiayi Zhao,Yaping Qu,Zheng Cao,Lina Song,Ziqiang Liu,Jianguo Lu,Xiaoli Zhan,Qinghua Zhang

Textiles capable of passive thermal management offer a sustainable approach to personal comfort and energy conservation. Despite advances in material design, achieving simultaneous thermal-moisture regulation, durability, and antimicrobial protection remains challenging. Here, a multifunctional metafabric fabricated is presented via in.situ synthesis and dip-coating, which combines high solar reflectivity (91.2%) and infrared emissivity (96.6%) for efficient radiative cooling. The fabric exhibits exceptional antimicrobial efficacy (>99.5% against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli )) without compromising thermal performance. Mechanical testing confirms outstanding durability, with minimal mass loss (<2.3%) and stable thermal properties after 120 abrasion cycles. This robust, multifunctional textile provides a practical solution for personal thermal management across diverse environments while mitigating microbial contamination risks.

Hierarchically Engineered Silk Fibroin Nanotextiles with Spectral Selectivity and Asymmetric Nanostructure for Sustainable Personal Thermal-Wet Regulation

Li Zirong,Yuan Yun,Wu Leilei,Qin Liying,Zhou Man,Yu Yuanyuan,Wang Qiang,Wang Ping

Passive cooling strategy with zero-energy consumption is effective in preventing people from heat stress. However, most of the existing radiative cooling textiles are fabricated with non-degradable hydrophobic synthetic polymers and lack the functions of sweat management. Herein, a hierarchically designed dual Janus nanofibrous textile with superior thermal-wet management capability is proposed by targeted selection of spinning solvents with different properties during electrospinning. The embedded Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles and BN nanosheets in silk fibroin nanofibers endow the textile with high solar reflectivity (97.12%) and infrared emissivity (98.69%), alongside improved in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivity (1.593 and 0.1187 W·K −1 ·m −1 , respectively). Benefiting from the asymmetric characteristics of the two sides in terms of fiber diameter and wettability, the nanofibrous textile exhibits unparalleled water transport index ( \({\text{R}}\) =1028.93%) and exceptional water vapor transmission rate (141.34 g·m −2 ·h −1 ). The textile integrates radiative cooling, rapid heat conduction, and unidirectional sweat evaporation, achieving a cooling effect exceeding 9 °C under direct sunlight when worn. Moreover, the Janus textile has good biocompatibility, satisfactory wearability and air breathability, ensuring its comfort in wearable applications. Computer simulations complement experimental results, providing insights into the deep-seated mechanisms of nanofiber formation, Mie scattering, and water transport. This innovative design offers promising prospects for the development of next-generation passive-cooling textiles. Highlights Biodegradable silk fibroin replaces petroleum polymers for passive-cooling textiles. Tunable spinnability is achieved through solvent surface tension/rheology control. Asymmetric pore structures enhance unidirectional sweat transport of Janus textiles. Heat conduction, radiation and evaporation together contribute to multimode cooling. Multiscale simulations elucidate nanofiber formation, radiative cooling, and rapid-drying mechanisms. Graphical
