Tough adhesive hydrogels that can tightly bond to wet tissue/polymer/ceramic/metal surfaces have great potentials in various fields. However, conventional adhesive hydrogels usually show short-term and nonreversible adhesion ability, as the water component in a hydrogel readily transforms to vapor or ice in response to fluctuation of environment temperature, hindering their applications in extreme conditions such as in freezing Arctic and roasting Africa. For the first time, urushiol (UH), a natural catechol derivative with a long alkyl side chain, is used as a starting material to copolymerize with acrylamide for fabricating adhesive hydrogels, which contain hydrophobic/hydrophilic moieties, antifreezing agent, and adhesive catechol groups. The antifreezer/moisturizer glycerol/water binary solvent dispersed in the hydrogel endows it with antifreezing/antiheating property. The hydrophobic association and π–π interaction from UH moieties of the copolymer greatly improve its mechanical strength (tensile stress: ∼0.12 MPa with strain of ∼1100%, toughness: ∼72 kJ/m3, compression stress: ∼6.72 MPa at strain of 90%). The hydrogel can strongly adhere to various dry/wet biological/polymeric/ceramic/metallic substrates at temperatures ranging from −45 to 50 °C. Under ambient conditions, its adhesion force to porcine skin, glass, and tinplate may reach up to 160, 425, and 275 N/m, respectively. Even stored at −45 or 50 °C for 30 d, the hydrogel still maintains good flexibility and robust adhesion force. It also shows repeatable underwater adhesion to biological tissue, glass, ceramic, plastic, and rubber. This novel antifreezing/antiheating adhesive hydrogel may be applied in extremely cold or hot environments and in underwater conditions.

We suggest a simple idea of bio-based adhesives with strong adhesion even under water. The adhesives simply prepared via polycondensation of 3,4-dihydroxyhydrocinnamic acid (DHHCA) and lactic acid (LA) in one pot polymerization. Poly(DHHCA-co-LA) has a hyperbranched structure and demonstrated strong dry and wet adhesion strength on diverse material surfaces. We found that their adhesion strength depended on the concentration of DHHCA. Poly(DHHCA-co-LA) with the lowest concentration of DHHCA showed the highest adhesion strength in water with a value of 2.7 MPa between glasses, while with the highest concentration of DHHCA it exhibited the highest dry adhesion strength with a value of 3.5 MPa, which was comparable to commercial instant super glue. Compared to underwater glues reported previously, our adhesives were able to spread rapidly under water with a low viscosity and worked strongly. Poly(DHHCA-co-LA) also showed long-term stability and kept wet adhesion strength of 2.2 MPa after steeping in water for 1 month at room temperature (initial strength was 2.4 MPa). In this paper, Poly(DHHCA-co-LA) with strong dry and wet adhesion properties and long-term stability was demonstrated for various kinds of applications, especially for wet conditions.Keywords:bio-based;wet adhesion;bio-inspired;hot melt adhesive

Tooth defects are regarded as “wounds” on the tooth. While remineralization therapies aim to rebuild tooth structures, challenges remain in protecting defects and delivering remineralization templates due to the wet and dynamic oral environment. Drawing from wound dressing, this study intends to construct a tooth dressing for the oral environment. Tannic acid (TA) was screened to crosslink fibroin protein (SF) and form internal anchoring through hydrogen bonding to fabricate a SF-TA (ST) tooth dressing matrix. Assisted by the drainage effect of the SF hydrophobic side chain on the interface, the system forms external anchoring to the tooth surface via phenolic hydroxyl groups and side chains. Notably, the bidirectional anchoring effect can be enhanced by calcium-phosphorus-enriched saliva, ensuring effective wet adhesion in the oral cavity. Loaded with an octuplet repeat of aspartate-serine-serine (8DSS) as a remineralization template, the SF-TA-8DSS (ST-8DSS) “tooth band-aid” maintains strong wet-adhesion to tooth surface under liquid contamination (bursting pressure above 780 mmHg) and delivers 8DSS into dentinal tubules (up to 100 µm over 14 days), promoting dentin remineralization. The proposed tooth band-aid offers an effective strategy for repairing tooth defects, combining mechanical reinforcement and wet adhesion through bidirectional anchoring for sustained mineralization under fluid contamination.

Although many tissue adhesives with good biocompatibility are currently available, their lack of wet adhesion capacity significantly hinders their clinical application. Therefore, further development and exploration of new medical adhesives are necessary. Inspired by the adhesion mechanism of marine mussels, through modifying gelatin protein with gallic acid (GA) for wet adhesion and cross-linking gelatin (Gel) molecular chains with tea polyphenols (TP), the adhesive TP-GA/Gel was developed. The adhesive exhibited an adhesion strength of up to 130.47 kPa to porcine skin tissues and maintained a high adhesion state in various aqueous environments, demonstrating excellent and reproducible adhesion. Additionally, TP-GA/Gel possessed outstanding antimicrobial, antioxidant, and biocompatibility properties. In an in vivo wound healing study with SD rats, the wound area treated with TP-GA/Gel adhesive decreased from 10.3 mm2to 0.9 mm2after 15 days, promoting effective and scarless wound healing. These results highlight the promising clinical potential of TP-GA/Gel as a medical adhesive.

Hydrogels find extensive application in sutureless wound closure and healing. For relying solely on the natural recovery rate of skin or tissue often results in prolonged healing periods due to the gradual process of wound contraction facilitated by cell migration, our approach involves the integration of two distinct layers to create a cohesive and innovative body-temperature responsive hydrogel tape (TRAT). The shape memory layer of P (PTHF-co-PEG-co-PETMP) owns excellent mechanical properties and adjustable temperature-responsive characteristics. Upon integration with the adhesive layer of consisting of a silk fibroin semi-interpenetrating network and poly (acrylic acid) covalent network, the resulting TRAT composite maintains remarkable body temperature responsive shape memory attributes while retaining robust wet surface adhesion capabilities (~150 kPa). In virtue of the exceptional temperature-responsive and wet-adhesion features, TRAT is capable of achieving varying degrees of wound contraction, and spontaneously unfolds from an initial folded state and securely attaches to the inner esophageal surface upon temperature stimulation. This holds promising implications for the development of anti-migration trachea stents, bordering TRAT's potential in this application.

Implantable flexible electronic has attracted significant research interest in various fields. However, it still faces the challenge of simultaneously achieving tight adhesion to tissues in a mildly wet environment and possessing excellent biocompatibility to reduce immune rejection reactions after implantation. Here, a degradable wet-adhesive flexible electronic device based on liquid metal and ultrathin gelatin film is developed. The ultrathin gelatin film forms numerous hydrogen bonds with tissue in a slightly humid environment, rapidly constructing a wet-adhesive interface without damaging tissue structure. Inkjet printing is utilized to pattern the mixture of liquid metal and PVP on the surface of the ultrathin gelatin to create flexible patch. With the excellent conductivity of liquid metal, low toxicity, and similarity to natural tissue components of gelatin, flexible patch exhibits outstanding biocompatibility and fatigue resistance. It can be implanted in the body for up to 6 weeks, retaining monitoring capabilities and resisting 1 000 000 cycles of bending fatigue. This study provides a novel strategy for the future development of implantable flexible electronics.

The hexagonal epithelial cells covered with mucus are believed to be responsible for the superior adhesion ability of tree frogs under dry and wet conditions. In spite of good progress made in the past years, many questions about the mechanism of wet adhesion remain to be addressed. Here, a tree frog-inspired wet adhesive, termed structured hydrogel adhesive, with poly(acrylamide)/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel to mimic the hexagonal epithelial cells and glycerol–water mixture to mimic the mucus is reported. The combined analysis of adhesion force and work of adhesion reveals the major contribution of direct solid–solid contact in wet adhesion. The contributions of capillarity and viscosity of liquid are qualitatively decoupled by regulating the fluid components and the temperature. The study offers an excellent model system and a great opportunity to gain deep insight into wet adhesion of animals, like tree frogs, which may pave the way for the design of adhesives for wet environments.

The undesired adhesion between the dura mater and surrounding tissues is a great challenge in the clinical treatment of spinal stenosis and disc herniation, and this condition can typically lead to failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) and persistent or recurrent lumbosacral pain or sciatica. Here, a protein-based supramolecular adhesive featured with wet adhesion and on-demand anti-adhesion via non-covalent interactions between anionic glycyrrhizic acid (GA) nanofibers and N-α-lauroyl-arginine ethyl ester hydrochloride (LAE) dispersed zein colloid (zein-LAE). By controlling the crosslinking density of the zein-LAE/GA supramolecular polymers, the adhesion and anti-adhesion could be conveniently regulated. In detail, suitable amount of GA improved the adhesion strength of the zein-LAE/GA supramolecular adhesives, whereas excessive GA caused the surface curing and anti-adhesion. It was proposed that the anti-adhesion outcome was attributed to the enhanced cross-linking density and Young’s modulus of the supramolecular polymers, and the declined freedom of the binding groups. The excellent biocompatibility and biodegradation enabled the zein-LAE/GA supramolecular polymers to function as easy-to-implement Janus implants for the in vivo prevention of postoperative epidural adhesion in a rat model. In conclusion, the physical barrier of the Janus implant together with the anti-oxidation and anti-inflammatory effects of the GA component played a synergistic role in achieving epidural anti-adhesion.

Skin electronics provides remarkable opportunities for non-invasive and long-term monitoring of a wide variety of biophysical and physiological signals that are closely related to health, medicine, and human-machine interactions. Nevertheless, conventional skin electronics fabricated on elastic thin films are difficult to adapt to the wet microenvironments of the skin: Elastic thin films are non-permeable, which block the skin perspiration; Elastic thin films are difficult to adhere to wet skin; Most skin electronics are difficult to work underwater. Here, a Wet-Adaptive Electronic Skin (WADE-skin) is reported, which consists of a next-to-skin wet-adhesive fibrous layer, a next-to-air waterproof fibrous layer, and a stretchable and permeable liquid metal electrode layer. While the electronic functionality is determined by the electrode design, this WADE-skin simultaneously offers superb stretchability, wet adhesion, permeability, biocompatibility, and waterproof property. The WADE-skin can rapidly adhere to human skin after contact for a few seconds and stably maintain the adhesion over weeks even under wet conditions, without showing any negative effect to the skin health. The use of WADE-skin is demonstrated for the stable recording of electrocardiogram during intensive sweating as well as underwater activities, and as the strain sensor for the underwater operation of virtual reality-mediated human-machine interactions.

Establishing the adhesion between soft yet wet materials remains challenging due to the interfacial water, the dilution of polymer strands, and the lubrication of the interface. Herein, nanohesives based on the grape seed protein and tannic acid (GSP-TANHs) were reported to adhere various hydrogels (including polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, poly 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane-sulfonic acid, and chitosan) with each other. Due to the rapid formation of widely available short-range forces between nanoparticles and hydrogel surfaces, GSP-TANHs could establish the initial adhesion around 10 s. Additionally, they served as universal hesives to a wide range of substrates without chemical modifications or pretreatments for adherents, such as plastics, cardboard, glass, iron, and rubber. The adhesion force for cardboard reached 11.37 N. Meanwhile, the adhesion force could be easily regulated by varying nanoparticle sizes and specific surface area. Thanks to the sensitivity of hydrogen bonding to heating, on-demand debonding was realized after increasing the temperature to 45 °C. Because of the reversible interactions, the adhesion was also repeatable. Due to the merits of grape seed protein and plant polyphenol, it could be completely biodegraded within 7 days. Bearing several merits, this strategy has promising applications in new implantable devices, E-skin, and biofabrication processes.

With the increasing demand in fields such as wearable sensors, soft robotics, tissue engineering, and wound dressings, the development of hydrogels with strong adhesion in wet environments has become a critical focus of research. However, most existing adhesive materials lack the ability to transition rapidly and reversibly between the adhesive and nonadhesive states, and their adhesion is often limited to a single wet environment. In this study, a smart interfacial adhesive hydrogel with tunable adhesion properties across diverse liquid environments is presented. By tailoring interchain interactions and leveraging electrostatically induced traction between hydrophilic and hydrophobic chain segments, the hydrogel achieves reversible adhesion modulation in response to temperature changes while maintaining strong wet adhesion. Notably, its adhesive strength at elevated temperatures (45 °C) is approximately three times greater than at lower temperatures (5 °C). The adhesive hydrogel exhibits an adhesive strength of 227 kPa in aqueous environments and 213 kPa in oil-containing environments. This innovative design strategy enables the hydrogel to exhibit broad switchable, and dynamic wet adhesion capabilities, unlocking significant potential for a wide range of applications.

Stretchable conductors with the combination of high elasticity and electric conductivity have long been pursued in soft electronics. Liquid metals (LMs), whose mechanical properties match well with the elastomeric matrix, have been successfully applied in soft robotics, electronic skins and wearable devices. But it remains challenging to develop conductive composite elastomers of LMs with reversible adhesion and self-healing. Herein, EGaIn droplets are uniformly dispersed into elastomer, which contain dynamic disulfide to endow the composite elastomer with thermal processability, recyclability, reversible wet adhesion, and self-healing. With the EGaIn content of ≥40 vol.%, the resultant composite elastomer shows the electric conductivity of 1.3 × 104 S m −1 , self-healing in 8.0 h, and reversible wet adhesion strength up to 670 kPa after curing for 2.0 h. When serving as conductive adhesive, it can easily adhere to the metal electrode to light up the LED even when stretched to 50%. When serving as self-adhesive bioelectrode, it can also detect human electromyography signals. Thus, not only may this study provide a new platform of designing self-adhesive, self-healing, and conductive composite elastomers of liquid metals, but their reversible wet adhesion and self-healing also promise the facileness of building damage-endurable soft electronics and applying to human–machine interfaces.
