Tendon-inspired fibers from liquid crystalline collagen as the pre-oriented bioink

Feng Deng,Yuan Dang,Lele Tang,Tianshuo Hu,Cuicui Ding,Xiaoqing Hu,Hui Wu,Lihui Chen,Liulian Huang,Yonghao Ni,Min Zhang

Nature provides rich bionic resources for the construction of advanced materials with excellent mechanical properties. In this work, inspired by animal tendons, a bionic collagen fiber was developed using collagen liquid crystals as the pre-oriented bioink. The texture of liquid crystalline collagen observed from polarized optical microscopy (POM) showed the specific molecular pre-orientation. Meanwhile, the collagen spinning liquids exhibited a minimal rise in viscosity upon increasing concentration from 60 to 120 mg/mL, indicating the feasible processability . The collagen fiber, which was prepared via wet spinning without being denatured, exhibited the favorable orientation of fibrils along its axis as observed with FESEM and AFM . Thanks to the synergistic effects between pre-orientation and shearing orientation, the maximum tensile strength and Young's modulus of collagen fibers reached 9.98 cN/tex (219.29 ± 22.92 MPa) and 43.95 ± 1.11 cN/tex (966.20 ± 24.30 MPa), respectively, which were also analogous to those of tendon. In addition, the collagen fiber possessed a desirable wet strength . Benefiting from the natural tissue affinity of collagen, the as-prepared bionic collagen fiber possessed excellent wound suture performance and biodegradability in vivo , which offers a new perspective for the potential of widespread applications of collagen fibers in biomedical fields .

Nanofibrous Kevlar Aerogel Threads for Thermal Insulation in Harsh Environments

Zengwei Liu,Jing Lyu,Dan Fang,Xuetong Zhang

Aerogel with low density, high porosity, and large surface area is a promising structure for the next generation of high-performance thermal insulation fibers and textiles. However, aerogel fibers suffer from weak mechanical properties or complex fabricating processes. Herein, a facile wet-spinning approach for fabricating nanofibrous Kevlar (KNF) aerogel threads (i.e., aerogel fibers) with high thermal insulation under extreme environments is demonstrated. The aerogel fibers made from nanofibrous Kevlar render a high specific surface area (240 m2/g) and wide-temperature thermal stability. The flexible and strong KNF aerogel fibers are woven into textiles to illustrate the excellent thermal insulation property under extreme temperature (−196 or +300 °C) and at room temperature. COMSOL simulation is applied to calculate the thermal conductivity of a single aerogel fiber and find an effective way to improve the thermal insulation property of the aerogel fiber. Furthermore, a series of functionalized fibers or textiles based on KNF aerogel fibers, such as phase-change fibers, conductive fibers, and hydrophobic textiles, have been prepared. Such KNF aerogel fibers represent a promising direction for the next generation of high-performance fibrous thermal-insulation materials.

Controllable assembly of continuous hollow graphene fibers with robust mechanical performance and multifunctionalities

Lei Shi,Hongbo Dai,Qinqqing Ni,Xiaoming Qi,Wei Liu,Rui He,Zhangyi Chi,Yaqin Fu

Macroscopic conformation of individual graphene sheets serves as the backbone of translating their intrinsic merits towards multifunctional practical applications. However, controllable and continuous assemblies of graphene-based nanomaterials to create stable macroscopic structural components are always in face of great challenge. We have developed a scalable converging-flow assisted wet-spinning methodology for continuously fabricating hollow graphene fibers (HGFs, the newest variation of solid graphene fibers) with high quality. The degradable silk thread is selectively utilized as the continuous hollow structure former that holds the coaxially stacked graphene sheets aligned through the converging-flow modulating process. For the first time, we have created the longest freestanding HGF in length of 2.1 m. The continuous HGFs are in an average diameter of 180 μm and with 4–8 μm adjustable wall thicknesses. The optimal HGF demonstrates an average tensile strength of 300 MPa and modulus of 2.49 GPa (comparable to typical solid graphene fibers, but the highest among the reported HGFs in literature) and an exceptional failure elongation of 10.8%. Additionally, our continuous HGFs exhibit spontaneous resistive response to thermal and strain stimuli (in form of large deformations and human motions), offering great potential for developing multifunctional sensors. We envision that this work demonstrates an effective and well-controlled macroscopic assembly methodology for the scaled-up mass production of HGFs.

Electric-Assisted Coaxial Wet Spinning of Radially Oriented Boron Nitride Nanosheet-Based Composite Fiber with Highly Enhanced Piezoelectricity

Cheng Siyi,Zhang Han,Chen Xiaoming,Wang Yijie,Cheng Fangyi,Sun Pengyuan,Li Youyou,Yang Zhengjie,Zhang Jie,Sun Jianxu,Shao Jinyou,Lu Bingheng

Piezoelectric filler-based composite fiber sensors have emerged as promising candidates for wearable textiles due to their self-powered capability and excellent sensing performance. However, current spinning fabrication methods face significant challenges in achieving uniform distribution and optimal orientation of piezoelectric fillers within polymer matrices, which limits their sensing performance. To address these issues, an innovative electric-assisted coaxial wet spinning method is developed to fabricate piezoelectric composite fiber (denoted as P-B fiber), which was composed of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) as piezoelectric fillers and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a piezoelectric polymer matrix. The radial electric field applied during spinning promotes the radial orientation of BNNSs, leading to enhanced stress transfer efficiency and, as a result, improved piezoelectricity. Moreover, the radial electric field enables the simultaneous in-situ polarization of BNNSs and PVDF during spinning process, further improving the piezoelectric performance. As a result, the P-B fiber exhibits an exceptional piezoelectric sensitivity of (186.4 ± 1.1) mV/N, approximately sixfold higher than that of fibers produced without electric field assistance. Accordingly, the P-B fiber demonstrates remarkable capability in detecting tiny mechanical loads, such as pulse waves and respiration, making it particularly suitable for wearable physiological monitoring textiles, providing a promising strategy for developing high-performance piezoelectric fiber sensors. Preparation of high-strength, high-modulus PVA fiber by synthesis of syndiotacticity-rich high molecular weight PVA polymers with VAc and VBz via emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization

Huajun Wang,Junwei He,Liming Zou,Chao Wang,Yan Vivian Li

Different vinyl acetate (VAc) and vinyl benzoate (VBz) monomer ratios have been chosen as monomers to create high polymerization degree ( P n ) and high syndiotacticity-diad content ( S-diad ) poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymers via emulsifier-free polymerization in order to address the problem of limited mechanical capabilities of PVA fibers prepared with low P n and low S-diad polymer. The variations in hydrogen bonding, P n , S-diad , and viscosity of different PVA polymers were investigated and evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and a viscosity tester. Moreover, various PVA fibers with high strength and modulus have been manufactured using a synthetic polymer as the raw material for dry-wet spinning. The effect of P n and S-diad on the mechanical and thermal characteristics of PVA fibers is evaluated using a variety of characterization techniques, such as the scanning electron microscope, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analyzer, X-ray diffraction, and tensile tester. As the ratio of VBz monomer increased, the results suggested that VBz may have a considerable impact on the P n and S-diad of PVA polymers, the  OH vibration absorption peak reduced from 3491 to 3442 cm −1 ; the P n increased from 2112 to 17,704; and the S-diad rose from 51.2% to 60.1%. In addition to the fact that P n and S-diad significantly increased the fibers' strength and modulus, the crystallinity increased from 41.8% to 51.7%, and the orientation degree rose from 87.5% to 91.7%, as P n and S-diad increased; the tensile strength and highest elastic modulus increased from 9.71 ± 0.3 cN/dtex to 12.74 ± 0.5 cN/dtex (increased of 31.2%) and 264.52 ± 9.3 cN/dtex to 338.41 ± 8.6 cN/dtex (increased of 27.9%); the elongation at break decreased from 5.63 ± 0.3% to 2.92 ± 0.2%.

Highly thermo-conductive but electrically insulating filament via a volume-confinement self-assembled strategy for thermoelectric wearables

Kai Wu,Yongzheng Zhang,Feng Gong,Dingyao Liu,Chuxin Lei,Qiang Fu

Polymer-based 1D materials with excellent axial thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity are highly demanded for thermal management in wearable electronics. In the last decades, boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) were commonly introduced into polymer-based materials for improving their thermal conductivity, while they were mainly focused on 2D papery film or 3D bulk composite materials. 1D polymer/BNNS composite filaments are far from a rapid development, and their axial thermal conductivity is still restricted to a low value (<5 W/m K), mainly because of insufficient orientation and low addition of BNNS. Herein, a highly thermo-conductive but electrically insulating regenerated cellulose (RC)/BNNS composite filament is fabricated by a volume-confinement self-assembled method in a wet-spinning procedure, in which large-sized BNNS are mandatorily confined within the limited region among adjacent RC nanofibers at BNNS loading of 60 wt%. Attributed to its highly anisotropic conformation, the as-prepared composite filament exhibits an ultra-high thermal conductivity of 9.22 W/m K, about 4.5-fold of non-confined RC/BNNS counterpart. After being weaved into a textile and integrated with a thermoelectric generator (TEG), it enables TEG to efficiently harvest energy from body heat and continuously self-power some wearable electronics, demonstrating a significant proof of concept for its extraordinary wearable thermal management applications.

Bio-Inspired Thermal Conductive Fibers by Boron Nitride Nanosheet/Boron Nitride Hybrid

Jiajing Zhang,Pingyuan Zhang,Chunhua Zhang,Jiahao Xu,Leyan Zhang,Liangjun Xia

With the innovation of modern electronics, heat dissipation in the devices faces several problems. In our work, boron nitride (BN) with good thermal conductivity (TC) was successfully fabricated by constructing the BN along the axial direction and the surface-grafted BN hybrid composite fibers via the wet-spinning and hot-pressing method. The unique inter-outer and inter-interconnected hybrid structure of composite fibers exhibited 176.47% thermal conductivity enhancement (TCE), which exhibits good TC, mechanical resistance, and chemical resistance. In addition, depending on the special structure of the composite fibers, it provides a new strategy for fabricating thermal interface materials in the electronic device.

Solvent Regulation Approach for Preparing Cellulose-Nanocrystal-Reinforced Regenerated Cellulose Fibers and Their Properties

Zeming Jiang,Lan Tang,Xin Gao,Wentao Zhang,Jiwei Ma,Liping Zhang

An electrolyte and aprotic solvent mixture were used to prepare cellulose solutions containing cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). All-cellulose composite fibers were then produced by dry–wet spinning these solutions. The presence of CNC in the all-cellulose fibers was demonstrated, and the effects of the CNC on the fiber properties were investigated. The all-cellulose fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and electronic tensile measurements. These results showed that CNCs were present in the mixture and that their structure was maintained in the all-cellulose fibers. No compatibility problems between the CNC and cellulose II matrix were observed. Introducing CNC enhanced the crystallinity, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the composite fibers.

Effects of spinning conditions on structure and properties of aramid-based hollow fiber blend separation membranes

Hongbin Li,Wenying Shi,Haixia Zhang,Xiaohong Qin

The rigid-rod-like poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA), as the raw material of aramid 1414, has the characteristics of high modulus and hydrophilicity. The flat sheet poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/PPTA blend separation membranes with improved hydrophilicity and enhanced modulus have been successfully prepared using in situ polycondensation method in our previous study. In this study, PPTA/PVDF hollow fiber blend separation membranes with enhanced hydrophilicity and mechanical strength were fabricated through the dry–wet spinning technique. Monomers of PPTA were polymerized in the PVDF solution, and the polymerization system was directly used as the spinning solution to fabricate the hollow fiber blend membrane. The effects of spinning conditions including the air-gap distance; the composition of core fluid; and composition of coagulation bath on the structure and properties including the separation properties, surface hydrophilicity, and mechanical properties of PPTA/PVDF hollow fiber blend membranes were well investigated. Membrane surface and cross-sectional morphologies were observed through scanning electron microscope. The enhancements of these spinning conditions weakened the phase separation process as a result of the formation of a small pore structure. The pore size distribution, water flux, and solute rejection varied accordingly. Different spinning conditions have different effects on the mechanical and hydrophilic properties of the hollow fiber blend membranes. Compared with pure PVDF hollow fiber membrane, blend membranes fabricated under different spinning conditions exhibited enhanced surface hydrophilicity and tensile properties. Finally, the change rates of the pure water flux and the solute rejection with different spinning conditions were calculated to further analyze and compare the statistically significant effects.

Fabrication and characterization of novel hollow fiber catalytic packing of PFSA–PES–ZrO2 (shell)–TiO2 (core) solid superacid via wet-spinning method

Chen-Hao Ji,Shuang-Mei Xue,Zhen-Liang Xu,Xiao-Hua Ma

In this work, a novel hollow fiber catalytic packing (HFCP) was fabricated of ZrO 2 (shell)/TiO 2 (core) (TZ) solid superacid nanoparticles , perfluorinated sulfonic acid resin (PFSA) and polyethersulfone (PES) via wet-spinning method. TZ was a homemade binary solid superacid nanoparticles with core–shell structure using superfine titania (5   nm) as the core and mesoporous tetragonal phase zirconia as the shell. It was synthesized through the hydrolysis of zirconium oxychloride in the presence of titania nanoparticles and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) hexagonal crystals covered on the titania core and followed by calcination and acidification. HFCPs demonstrated well catalytic performance in the esterification test of ethanol and acetic acid due to the superacid sites on the surface of TZ and PFSA polymer chain. And the superacid sites on the PFSA polymer chain could be sufficiently exposed by the embedding of the nanoparticles. At the same time, HFCPs also showed ultrahigh recovery which was more than 99.5% in 6 runs because of the well integrality benefited from the wet-spinning method. The specific surface area (SSA) and pore size distribution were analyzed by N 2 adsorption–desorption, the result showed that the SSA of HFCPs decreased with the increasing of the PFSA additive amount. The SSA of the HFCP with the best catalytic performance could be up to 90.60   m 2 /g, in which the PFSA weight proportion was 13%. The XRD pattern and HRTEM image showed the HFCPs i.e. the zirconia shell of TZ formed uniform tetragonal phase. Other characterizations such as FT-IR, XPS, SEM and TEM were utilized to determine the chemical composition and morphology of the HFCPs and TZ, the results showed the novel catalytic packing was a suitable catalyst for the acid catalyzed reactions.

Topological Polymer Networks-Enabled Mechanically Strong Polyamide-Imide Aerogel Fibers for Thermal Insulation in Harsh Environments

Yuyao Li,Wang Cui,Xin Wang,Shuming Zhang,Qinghan Du,Jie Fan,Yong Liu

Aerogel fibers have sparked substantial interest as attractive candidates for thermal insulation materials. Developing aerogel fibers with the desired porous structure, good knittability, flame retardancy, and high- and low-temperature resistance is of great significance for practical applications; however, that is very challenging, especially by using an efficient method. Herein, mechanically strong and flexible aerogel fibers with remarkable thermal insulation performance are reported, which are achieved by constructing stiff-soft topological polymer networks and a multilevel hollow porous structure. The combination of polyamide-imide (PAI) with stiff chains and polyurethane (PU) with soft chains is first found to be able to form a topological entanglement architecture. More importantly, multilevel hollow pores can be constructed synchronously through just a one-step and green wet-spinning process. The resultant PAI/PU@340 aerogel fibers show an ultrahigh breaking strength of 94.5 MPa and superelastic property with a breaking strain of 20%. Furthermore, they can be knitted into fabrics with a low thermal conductivity of 25 mW/(m·K) and exhibit attractive thermal insulation property under extremely high (300 °C) and low temperatures (−191 °C), implying them as promising candidates for next-generation thermal insulation materials.

The Ablation Performance of Silicon Nitride/Boron Nitride Fibrous Monolithic Ceramics under an Oxyacetylene Combustion Torch

Qingqing Chen,Yuan Zhang,Yu Zhou,Daxin Li,Guobing Ying

In this study, Si3N4/BN fibrous monolithic ceramics were successfully prepared by wet spinning extrusion and hot pressing, and the effects on its ablation performance and microstructure were studied. The samples were burned in an oxyacetylene flame for 60 s×30 to evaluate the ablation resistance. With the increase in ablation time, the fibrous monolithic ceramics exhibited specific mass and linear ablation rates, which show a trend of first increasing, then decreasing, and then increasing again. When the ablation time is 60 s×10, 60 s×20, and 60 s×30, the mass ablation rates of the fibrous monolithic ceramics are 1×10−5mg/s, −8.3×10−6mg/s, −6.7×10−7mg/s, respectively; the linear ablation rates are 4.7×10−5μg/s, −1.2×10−5μg/s and 1.7×10−6μg/s. After 60 s×30 of ablation, the surface oxides of the species are washed away by the oxyacetylene flame, revealing a porous coral-like structure with many cracks. A glass phase layer, predominantly constituted by sintering aids, envelops the Si3N4ceramic surface on the ablated sample, serving as an effective barrier against additional ablation.
