In this study, the FPA90-Cl resin was magnetized with supported Fe 3 O 4 particles using a chemical co-precipitation method and its removal performance of bromate and coexisting precursors was explored. The magnetized FPA90-Cl resin was structurally characterized by SEM, FT-IR, and XRD. The effects of the initial concentrations, temperature, and resin dosage on bromate and bromide ion removal in drinking water were investigated using batch experiments. The magnetized FPA90-Cl resin exhibited a high removal efficiency for bromate and bromide ions at three initial concentrations, and the residual bromate concentrations were under the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 μg L −1 after 80 min. The adsorption data of bromate and bromide ion could be well described by a pseudo-first-order kinetic model ( R 2 ˃ 0.98). The bromate removal alone was further studied by varying the initial solution pH, temperature, and competitive anions. The results showed that the magnetized FPA90-Cl resin could be used over a wide pH range (4.0–9.0). The maximum sorption capacity of the magnetized FPA90-Cl resin for bromate reached 132.83 mg g −1 at 298 K. The Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models fit the bromate adsorption equilibrium better ( R 2 ˃ 0.99) than the Langmuir isotherm model ( R 2 ˃ 0.98). The thermodynamic analysis showed that the bromate adsorption process was endothermic. The negative ΔG and positive ΔS indicated that the process was spontaneous and that randomness increased after adsorption, respectively. The competition of coexisting anions with bromate was in the order of SO 4 2− > CO 3 2− > Cl − > NO 3 − > HCO 3 − > PO 4 3− . Additionally, the magnetized FPA90-Cl resin could maintain a high bromate and bromide ion adsorption capacity after five cycles of regeneration by a 0.1 M NaCl solution.

Iron-based materials are effective for the reductive removal of the disinfection byproduct bromate in water, while the construction of highly stable and active Fe-based materials with wide pH adaptability remains greatly challenging. In this study, highly dispersed iron phosphide-decorated porous carbon (Fe2P(x)@P(z)NC-y) was prepared via the thermal hydrolysis of Fe@ZIF-8, followed by phosphorus doping (P-doping) and pyrolysis. The reduction performances of Fe2P(x)@P(z)NC-y for bromate reduction were evaluated. Characterization results showed that the Fe, P, and N elements were homogeneously distributed in the carbonaceous matrix. P-doping regulated the coordination environment of Fe atoms and enhanced the conductivity, porosity, and wettability of the carbonaceous matrix. As a result, Fe2P(x)@P(1.0)NC-950 exhibited enhanced reactivity and stability with an intrinsic reduction kinetic constant (kint) 1.53–1.85 times higher than Fe(x)@NC-950 without P-doping. Furthermore, Fe2P(0.125)@P(1.0)NC-950 displayed superior reduction efficiency and prominent stability with very low Fe leaching (4.53–22.98 μg L–1) in a wide pH range of 4.0–10.0. The used Fe2P(0.125)@P(1.0)NC-950 could be regenerated by phosphating, and the regenerated Fe2P(0.125)@P(1.0)NC-950 maintained 85% of its primary reduction activity after five reuse cycles. The study clearly demonstrates that Fe2P-decorated porous carbon can be applied as a robust and stable Fe-based material in aqueous bromate reduction.

A sensitive and selective chemosensing system for bromate anions (BrO3− anions) is highly demand due to the serious toxicity of BrO3− anions. In this report, polymeric ethylene imine (PEI) functionalized photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs@PEI) were prepared by the thermal pyrolysis of citric acid and PEI. The as-prepared CDs@PEI were successfully employed to establish a photoluminescence (PL)-based sensing system for BrO3− anions with high sensitivity and selectivity. The experimental conditions were systemically optimized, and a linear relationship between the PL quenching rate of the CDs@PEI and BrO3− anion concentration in the range from 0.04 to 0.35 μM could be obtained, with a very low limit of detection of ca. 0.17 nM. The proposed method was further employed to determine BrO3− anions in drinking water, bottled water and lake water samples with good recoveries. This established method was also successfully employed to detect BrO3− anion content in practical pastry samples.

In this paper zinc-based metal organic framework material (ZIF-8) modified carbon ionic liquid electrode (CILE) was prepared and electrodeposited with gold nanoparticles to get a composite modified electrode, which was used as the sensing interface for the immobilization of hemoglobin (Hb) with Nafion to prepare a modified electrode (Nafion/Hb/Au/ZIF-8/CILE). Electrochemical behaviors of Hb on the modified electrode were checked by cyclic voltammetry with a pair of well-defined redox peaks appeared. The effects of pH and scan rate on direct electrochemistry of Hb were studied with electrochemical parameters calculated. The prepared electrochemical enzyme sensor showed good catalytic activity to the electroreduction of bromate and nitrite with the linear ranges from 0.5 to 10.0 mmol/L and from 0.1 to 0.8 mmol/L, respectively. The detection limits were calculated as 0.83 mmol/L and 0.03 mmol/L, and the water samples were analyzed to prove the practical application.

Nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) is a promising material for the removal of both organic and inorganic pollutants from contaminated water. This study investigates the potential of a novel composite of nZVI on a polymer-derived supporting ceramic (nZVI-PDC) synthesized via the liquid-phase reduction method for the simultaneous adsorption and Fenton-type reduction of bromate anion (BrO 3 − ) in water. The nZVI nanoparticles were effectively anchored onto the PDC by impregnating high-yield carbon in a ferrous sulfate solution . The PDC facilitated the uniform dispersion of nZVI nanoparticles due to its multiple active sites distributed within mesocarbon cavities. The developed nZVI-PDC composite exhibited a high specific surface area of 837 m 2 g −1 and an ordered mesoporous structure with a pore volume of 0.37 cm 3 g −1 . As an adsorbent, the nZVI-PDC composite exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity (q e ) of 842 mg g −1 and a partition coefficient (K H ) of 10.2 mg g −1 μM −1 , as calculated by the pseudo-second-order model. As a catalyst, the composite demonstrated a reaction kinetic rate of 43.5 μmol g −1 h −1 within 6 h at pH 4, using a dosage of 60 mg L −1 nZVI-PDC and a concentration of 0.8 mmol L −1 H 2 O 2 . Comparatively, PDC exhibited a q e of 408 mg g −1 , K H of 1.67 mg g −1 μM −1 , and a reaction rate of 20.8 μmol g −1 h −1 , while nZVI showed a q e of 456 mg g −1 , K H of 2.30 mg g −1 μM −1 , and a reaction rate of 27.2 μmol g −1 h −1 . The modelling indicated that the nZVI-PDC composite followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The remarkable removal efficiency of the nZVI-PDC composite was attributed to the synergistic effects between PDC and nZVI, where PDC facilitated charge transfer, promoting Fe 2+ generation and the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle. Overall, this work introduces a promising adsorption technology for the efficient removal of BrO 3 − from contaminated aqueous solutions, highlighting the significant potential of the nZVI-PDC composite in water purification applications.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) named HKUST-1 ([Cu 3 (BTC) 2 (H 2 O) 3 ] n , BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) were functionalized by thiol groups through a facile coordination-based postsynthetic strategy (HKUST-1-SH). HKUST-1-SH was explored as a novel adsorbent for efficient removal of bromate . HKUST-1-SH showed a remarkable adsorption capacity of 59.6 mg g −1 , approximately 5-times higher than that of HKUST-1. The bromate adsorption process of isotherms, kinetics, the effects of pH value and co-existing ions were examined, and the adsorption mechanism was also studied. The results showed the adsorption process fits the Langmuir adsorption model, and the pseudo-second-order model described the kinetics well. HKUST-1-SH works effectively for removal of bromate in a wide pH range (3–10), and in the presence of other substances such as sulfate, bromide and nitrate. The production of bromide in solution and the detection of SO 3 H groups from FT-IR spectra indicate that the main mechanism of HKUST-1-SH for bromate removal is redox reaction. The work opens up a new way for bromate removal in water.

A nanocomposite consisting of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was fabricated by a two-step chemical reduction method. Firstly, a PDDA-rGO composite was prepared by using hydrazine hydrate as a reducing agent. Subsequently, the AuNP-PDDA-rGO composite was prepared in ethylene glycol with PDDA-rGO and HAuCl 4 as raw materials using sodium citrate as a reduction agent. The resulting composite was characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical methods. This composite was then modified on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by the dropping method. The electrochemical behavior of bromate on this modified electrode was investigated. The results showed that PDDA-rGO can be used as a good carrier to obtain AuNPs with small particle sizes and good dispersion. The AuNPs and PDDA-rGO in composite enhanced the electrochemical activity of the electrode. Under the synergistic action of each component, the resulting electrode exhibited high activity for the electrochemical reduction of bromate. Based on this, an amperometric bromate sensor was fabricated in N 2 -saturated 0.10 mol/L HCl with attractive features including a wide linear range of 1.0 × 10 −7 –1.7 × 10 −3 mol/L, a low detection limit (3 s b ) of 3.2 × 10 −8 mol/L, and a high sensitivity of 2317 µA/mM/cm 2 . The sensor was successively used for the determination of bromate in drinking water. Graphical
