Fire-retardant anti-microbial robust wood nanocomposite capable of fire-warning by graded-penetration impregnation

Wenbo Che,Zehui Li,Siqi Huo,Toan Dinh,Min Hong,Cristian Maluk,Youming Yu,Yanjun Xie

Wood, renowned for its sustainability, specific strength , and thermal insulation , stands as a highly sought-after sustainable structural material. However, the inherent flammability , decay susceptibility, and inadequate mechanical strength hinder its practical applications in high-rise buildings. Here, we report a groundbreaking solution to fabricate multi-functional fire-retardant wood (M-FRW) through a coupled delignification/impregnation procedure followed by densification treatment. The GO/BA created a hybridized network on the M-FRW surface, while BA molecules penetrated the wood cell. As-created M-FRW exhibits a superior flame retardancy due to the physical barrier and catalytic charring effect of GO/BA, as reflected by an ultrahigh limiting oxygen index value of >75 % and an 85 % reduction in the peak of heat release rate compared to natural wood. Furthermore, the GO/BA layer of M-FRW has a sensitive fire alarm response and ultralong alarm time (∼11280 s). More impressively, M-FRW exhibits an exceptional ability to inhibit decay fungi, mold fungi, and common bacteria due to the superimposed anti-microbial effect of GO and BA. Additionally, M-FRW shows desirable mechanical and thermal insulation properties . This work provides a facile strategy to fabricate a multi-functional advanced wood nanocomposite , making them hold great potential for various engineering applications , such as intelligent buildings .

Constructing “π–π” Reinforced Bridge Carbon Nanofibers with Highly Active Co-N/C@pyridine N/C@CNTs Sites as Free-Standing Bifunctional Oxygen Electrodes for Zn–Air Batteries

Lu Tuo,Xu Nengneng,Guo Liyuan,Zhou Benji,Dai Lingyu,Yang Woochul,Liu Guicheng,Lee Joong Kee,Qiao Jinli

Rechargeable Zn–air batteries (ZABs) have received extensive attention, while their real applications are highly restricted by the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions (ORR/OER). Herein, we report a “bridge” structured flexible self-supporting bifunctional oxygen electrode (CNT@Co-CNF F50-900 ) with strong active and stable Co-N/C@pyridine N/C@CNTs reaction centers. Benefiting from the electron distribution optimization and the advantages of hierarchical catalytic design, the CNT@Co-CNF F50-900 electrode had superior ORR/OER activity with a small potential gap (ΔE) of 0.74 V. Reinforced by highly graphitized carbon and the “π–π” bond, the free-standing CNT@Co-CNF F50-900 electrode exhibited outstanding catalytic stability with only 36 mV attenuation. Impressively, the CNT@Co-CNF F50-900 -based liquid ZAB showed a high power density of 371 mW cm −2 , a high energy density of 894 Wh kg −1 , and a long cycling life of over 130 h. The assembled quasi-solid-state ZAB also demonstrated a high power density, attaining 81 mW cm −2 , with excellent charge–discharge durability beyond 100 h and extremely high flexibility under the multi-angle application. This study provides an effective electrospinning solution for integrating high-efficiency electrocatalysts and electrodes for energy storage and conversion devices. Graphical Abstract

Efficient Bifunctional NiFe-LDH@Co9S8 Nanoflower Electrocatalysts Anchored with Pt Nanocrystal for Flexible Quasi-solid Rechargeable Zinc Air Battery

Jiongyu Chen,Zhi Liu,Yuchen Liu,Zhen Cheng,Jingze Zhang,Qinghong Zhang,Yaogang Li,Chengyi Hou,Kerui Li,Hongzhi Wang

Efficient and affordable electrocatalysts are a crucial part of rechargeable zinc air batteries (ZAB) to address the problems caused by the sluggish activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the cathode. Anchoring noble metals on transition-metal-based substances is a promising strategy to reinforce electrochemical activity and reduce the cost. Herein, we have developed a subsequent spontaneous-redox strategy to load Pt nanoparticles with 3.75% containing NiFe-LDH nanoflakes to boost the ORR activity. After that, NiFe-LDH@ Co9S8 is constructed as a rational design for bifunction catalysis. In the ORR process, the half-wave potential of the obtained catalyst, Pt-anchored NiFe-LDH@Co9S8, is 0.83 V vs RHE, showing better catalytic activity than Pt/C. In the OER process, the obtained catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 280 mV, which is superior to that of RuO2. Notably, aqueous ZAB and quasi-solid-state ZAB achieve peak power densities of 164.3 and 78.4 mW cm–2, respectively. Furthermore, quasi-solid-state ZAB exhibits a long cycle lifespan for 240 cycles in 80 h, and a remarkable stability after bending for 50 cycles. This work paves the way for the design of the NiFe-LDH nanostructure by vacancy engineering.

Hollow-Co3O4@CoP/NS-RGO Heterojunction Structure Derived from ZIF-67 Promotes Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Bifunctional Catalysis

Bin Liu,Songlin Xue,Shifeng Tan,Duxin Zhang,Zhao Deng,Hongfei Pan,Wenmao Tu,Ruiming Zhang,Haining Zhang,Yadong Wang

In this work, a two-step calcination method to fabricate Co3O4@CoP hollow nanoparticles embedded in N, S-co-doped reduced graphene oxide substrates is reported. The electrocatalyst is synthesized through a hydrothermal-calcination method of adding graphene oxide using ZIF-67 as a template followed by an annealing process in the presence of NaH2PO4·H2O. In the designed electrocatalyst, the formed hollow nanoparticles had an average diameter of 100 nm. The synthesized electrocatalyst displays a hydrogen evolution reaction overpotential of 54 mV at 10 mA cm–2 current density in 0.5 mol L–1 H2SO4 solution at room temperature, comparable to Pt/C catalysts. The oxygen evolution reaction overpotential in 1 mol L–1 KOH electrolyte is 288 mV, which is almost equivalent to that of IrO2. Stated thus, the as-prepared composite catalysts are promising candidates for bifunctional catalysts for water splitting technology, relieving the limitation of commercial catalysts caused by their single catalytic performance.

Crystalline-amorphous Co/Co3O4 derived from a low-temperature etching of ZIF-67 for oxygen-invovled catalytic reactions

Shifeng Tan,Meiling Fan,Wenmao Tu,Duxin Zhang,Qi Li,Ziyi Xu,Xiaoyu Yang,Hongfei Pan,Haining Zhang

Development of a simple method for synthesizing transition metal-based bifunctional catalysts is of great importance in the context of oxygen-involved electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. In this effort, electrochemical catalysts consisting of amorphous cobalt and cobalt oxides on graphene oxide (GO) were fabricated using a solvothermal process followed by etching ZIF-67 with oxygen-rich functional groups on GO (≈ 29 at. %) in a weak reduction atmosphere at 400 ℃. During the calcination process forming the ZIF-67@GO-based materials, exposed cobalt metal centers are created by partial vaporization and oxidation of ZIF-67. Also, metal ions are reduced to form Co and partially combine with oxygen from GO to generate amorphous Co 3 O 4 . Moreover, the porous framework structure of ZIF is retained under the mild calcination temperatures used. Benefiting from their porous framework and heteroatoms-doped composition, the ZIF-67@GO-based materials have low overpotentials of 319 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and high catalytic activities toward the oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions in an alkaline electrolyte. In addition, the liquid zinc-air battery assembled with the ZIF-67@GO composite produced at a calcination temperature of 400 ℃ displays a high performance. Overall, the results demonstrate that the ZIF-67@GO composites have the potential to be high-performing catalysts in energy conversion devices. The readily controllable and high-yielding calcination method in this study is expected to serve as a model for new strategies to synthesize low-cost and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Electronic structure optimizing of Ru nanoclusters via Co single atom and N, S co-doped reduced graphene oxide for accelerating water electrolysis

Ziyi Xu,Meiling Fan,Shifeng Tan,Rui Wang,Wenmao Tu,Xiege Huang,Hongfei Pan,Haining Zhang,Haolin Tang

The development of efficient and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is impending for the advancement of water-splitting. In this study, we developed a novel electrocatalyst consisting of highly dispersed Ru nanoclusters ameliorated by cobalt single atoms and N, S co-doped reduced graphene oxide (Co SA Ru NC @NSG). Benefitted from the optimized electronic structure of the Ru nanoclusters induced by the adjacent single atomic Co and N, S co-doped RGO support, the electrocatalyst exhibits exceptional HER performance with overpotentials of 15 mV and 74 mV for achieving a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline and acidic water. The catalyst outperforms most noble metal-based HER electrocatalysts . Furthermore, the electrolyzer assembled with Co SA Ru NC @NSG and RuO 2 demonstrated an overall voltage of 1.56 V at 10 mA cm −2 and an excellent operational stability for over 25 h with almost no attenuation. Theoretical calculations also deduce its high HER activity demonstrated by the smaller reaction energy barrier due to the optimized electronic structure of Ru nanoclusters . This strategy involving the regulation of metal nanoparticles activity through flexible single atom and GO support could provide valuable insights into the design of high-performance and low-cost HER catalysts.
