The practical implementation of Zn-based flow batteries encounters the challenges associated with uneven deposition of Zn ions and undesirable side reactions. Here, a hybrid Zn-based electrolyte system composed of ZnBr 2 , ethylene glycol (EG), H 2 O and potassium gluconate (KGlu) is developed as anolyte to modulate the solvation structure and interface engineering for a sustainable Zn-based flow battery. The EG molecules could exclude water molecules outside the solvation structure, inhibiting the water-induced side reactions and Zn corrosion. Moreover, the incorporation of potassium gluconate constructs an artificial stable anionic interface for dendrite-free Zn deposition. Chemical stability and hydrogen evolution potential tests demonstrate that the activity of water molecules could be suppressed in the EG-containing hybrid electrolyte. Deposition morphologies and Zn//Zn symmetric flow battery tests also reveal that gluconate anions preferentially adsorbed on zinc anode could effectively facilitate uniform zinc deposition. As a result, the Zn-based flow battery with the proposed hybrid electrolyte delivers a stable cycling performance over 200 cycles and high reversibility with an average CE of over 97.4 % at 20 mA cm −2 , exhibiting a peak power density of 103.2 mW cm −2 . This work provides a universal electrolyte design strategy for realizing a sustainable Zn-based flow battery.

Electrolytes with high-efficiency lithium-ion transfer and reliable safety are of great importance for lithium battery. Although having superior ionic conductivity (10 −3 –10 −2 S·cm −1 ), traditional liquid-state electrolytes always suffer from low lithium-ion transference number \(({t_{{\rm{L}}{{\rm{i}}^ + }}},\,\, < 0.4)\) and thus undesirable battery performances. Herein, the deep eutectic solvent (DES) is vacuum-filtered into the ∼ 1 nm interlayer channel of vermiculite (Vr) lamellar framework to fabricate a quasi-solid electrolyte (Vr-DES QSE). We demonstrate that the nanoconfinement effect of interlayer channel could facilitate the opening of solvation shell around lithium-ion. Meanwhile, the interaction from channel wall could inhibit the movement of anion. These enable high-efficiency lithium-ion transfer: 2.61 × 10 −4 S·cm −1 at 25 °C. Importantly, the \({t_{{\rm{L}}{{\rm{i}}^ + }}}\) value reaches 0.63, which is 4.5 times of that of bulk DES, and much higher than most present liquid/quasi-solid electrolytes. In addition, Vr-DES QSE shows significantly improved interfacial stability with Li anode as compared with DES. The assembled Li symmetric cell can operate stably for 1000 h at 0.1 mA·cm −2 . The lithium iron phosphate (LFP)∣Vr-DES QSE∣Li cell exhibits high capacity of 142.1 mAh·g −1 after 200 cycles at 25 °C and 0.5 C, with a capacity retention of 94.5%. The strategy of open solvation shell through nanoconfinement effect of lamellar framework may shed light on the development of advanced electrolytes.

High-performance, cost-efficient electrolyte systems are sought after for high-energy-density multivalent metal batteries. However, the expensive precursor and complex synthesis process hinders exploration of cathode electrode/electrolyte interfaces and solvation structures. Here we developed a universal cation replacement method to prepare low-cost, high-reversibility magnesium and calcium electrolytes derived from a zinc organoborate solvation structure. By rationally adjusting the precursor chain length and F-substitution degree, we can fine tune anion participation in the primary solvation shell. A completely dissociated Mg organoborate electrolyte enables high current endurance and enhanced electrochemical kinetics, whereas the Ca organoborate electrolyte with strong coordination/B–H inclusion offers a stable solid–electrolyte interphase with high coulombic efficiency. A rechargeable 53.4 Wh kg −1 Mg metal prototype is achieved with a 30 μm Mg anode, a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio (E/S = 5.58 μl mg −1 ) and a modified separator/interlayer. This work provides innovative strategies for reversible electrolyte systems and high-energy-density multivalent metal batteries.

The zinc anode mainly faces technical problems such as short circuits caused by the growth of dendrite, low coulomb efficiency, and a short cycle life caused by side reactions, which impedes the rapid development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Herein, a common ionic liquid, 1,1-Spirobipyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate ([SBP]BF4), is selected as a new additive for pure ZnSO4electrolyte. It is found that this additive could regulate the solvation sheath of hydrated Zn2+ions, promote the ionic mobility of Zn2+, homogenize the flux of Zn2+, avoid side reactions between the electrolyte and electrode, and inhibit the production of zinc dendrites by facilitating the establishment of an inorganic solid electrolyte interphase layer. With the 1% [SBP]BF4-modified electrolyte, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell delivers an extended plating/stripping cycling life of 2000 h at 1 mA cm−2, which is much higher than that of the cell without additives (330 h). As a proof of concept, the Zn‖V2O5battery using the [SBP]BF4additive shows excellent cycling stability, maintaining its specific capacity at 97 mAh g−1after 2000 cycles at 5 A g−1, which is much greater than the 46 mAh g−1capacity of the non-additive battery. This study offers zinc anode stabilization through high-efficiency electrolyte engineering.
