Renewable hemicellulose with a unique structure exhibits a wide range of potential applications. However, it has been a formidable challenge to isolate hemicellulose with an intact structure from lignocellulosic materials. In this study, LiBr·3H2O (LBTH) was used as a green solvent for the effective fractionation of hemicellulose from bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) under mild conditions (25–85 °C). It was found that hemicellulose in BHKP can be dissolved in LBTH with ease and high selectivity owing to the breaking of hydrogen bonds between hemicellulose and cellulose, and the dissolved hemicellulose can be regenerated with a high degree of polymerization (DP) in the range of 240–264 using ethanol precipitation. The highest removal rate of hemicellulose from BHKP was as high as 95.2%, and the corresponding yield of pure hemicellulose reached 84.3%. Moreover, simultaneously obtained undissolved cellulose pulp through LBTH treatment had a high content of α-cellulose (96.7%), high DP (880), and trace levels of Fe (2 ppm), which met the standard requirement for dissolving pulp for the production of lyocell. In addition, LBTH can be easily recycled to guarantee a green and sustainable process. This work provides a new approach for highly selective fractionation of hemicellulose and cellulose from commercial BHKP based on an efficient and environmentally friendly LBTH treatment, which could be very promising for better valorization of hemicellulose and cellulose in many advanced applications.

Lyocell fiber has emerged as a new generation of green fiber due to its preparation process and unique properties in comparison with viscose fiber. The raw material for the preparation of Lyocell fiber has a great impact on the quality of the finished product. However, unlike viscose-grade dissolving pulp, there is no evaluation system for Lyocell-grade dissolving pulp, making it difficult to assess the quality of the raw material. This study examined the approach to upgrade the paper-grade pulp to dissolving pulp for the preparation of the raw material for Lyocell fiber. Under the sequence of caustic extraction, acid treatment, and enzymatic treatment, the pulp was prepared with competitive properties compared to the commercial Lyocell-grade dissolving pulp. The assessment of prepared pulp was also accomplished by characterizing the pulp properties, the dissolution properties, and the spinnability and stability of Lyocell solution using the prepared sample. In addition, the dissolution mechanism and influencing factors of pulp in the system were elucidated, providing a theoretical basis for upgrading paper-grade pulp to dissolving pulp for Lyocell fiber production. Keywords:dissolving pulp;Lyocell fiber;assessment;dissolution properties;spinnability

This study aimed to produce high-performance dissolving pulps from corn stalks using a combination of cold caustic extraction (CCE) and deep eutectic solvent (DES) method. Results showed that CCE not only removed hemicelluloses but also altered the structure of cellulose, increasing its polymerization degree and influencing the Fock reactivity of the dissolving pulp (reduced to 10.55%). Subsequent treatment with DES effectively dissolving the remaining hemicelluloses while disrupting the cellulose crystallinity and improving the Fock reactivity of the dissolving pulp (increased to 72.14% from 10.55%). The study implied that the hydrogen bond donor in DES played a crucial role in breaking the cellulose chains and improving the reactivity of the dissolving pulp. The dissolving pulp produced from corn stalks using through the combination of CCE and DES method exhibited the cellulose content of 94.46% and the Fock reactivity of 72.14%, providing a new strategy for the high-value utilization of stover resources.

The aim of this study was to investigate an effective approach for improving the dissolving pulp properties for making specialty fiber. The caustic and enzymatic treatment of the properties of dissolving pulp was conducted by analyzing the macromolecular structure and chemical composition. The results showed that the enzymatic treatment was more effective on influencing the macromolecular properties, while the caustic treatment had more influence on structural changing, mainly cellulose crystal structure and crystallinity. Meanwhile, to maintain a higher purity and higher brightness, caustic treatment would be beneficial in comparison with enzymatic treatment. The performance of caustic treated sample was evaluated in regarding to chemical composition and acetylation reaction performance, using commercial pulp as reference. The competitive feature of treated sample suggested its potential in future application.

The development of effective separation of hemicelluloses from fully bleached cellulosic pulp fibers is conducive to the development and utilization of high value-added cellulose products. In this study, Turkey Red Oil (sulfonated castor oil) (TRO), a renewable source, was proposed to facilitate hemicelluloses separation from chemical pulp in cold caustic extraction (CCE). As expected, TRO application can significantly promote hemicelluloses separation in the CCE process. By contrast to the traditional CCE process, TRO/CCE could decrease the hemicelluloses content from 9.1 to 6.1%, while the hemicelluloses removal selectivity increased from 72.5 to 82.3% and efficiency, increased from 52.4 to 68.1%. Moreover, without sacrificing hemicelluloses removal, the TRO utilization can reduce the alkaline consumption and therefore preserve the cellulose I crystal from conversion to cellulose II. Additionally, the TRO/CCE procedure made the cellulose fiber more flexible and more accessible to react with CS 2 and therefore a high Fock reactivity.

High-grade dissolving pulp was prepared from radiata pine by the pre-hydrolysis Kraft process. The effect of the P-factor in the pre-hydrolysis stage on the properties of wood chips was investigated. With an increasing P-factor, hemicellulose was selectively removed from wood chips, and the crystallized index of the pre-hydrolyzed wood chips increased owing to the dissolution of the amorphous phase in the substrates. Further, sugars in hemicellulose could be rapidly hydrolyzed; whereas, their release became slower with a further increase in the P-factor. Comparatively, arabinose and galactose were readily removed during pre-hydrolysis for its accessibility. Additionally, accumulations of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) were detected via acid-catalyzed dehydration of pentose and hexose, respectively. HMF can be further converted into formic and levulinic acid by acid-catalyzed dehydration. After pre-hydrolysis, the chips were subjected to Kraft cooking, and the optimal P-factor (480) for the production of dissolving pulp and the optimal H-factor (1500) in terms of the Kappa number, viscosity, and α-cellulose of the pulp were obtained. Then, the Kraft pulp was bleached using the (OO)D 0 E OP D 1 D 2 sequence, and a final ISO brightness of 91.0% was achieved with negligible loss in α-cellulose. The described technique and parameters are important for the industrial production of high-grade dissolving pulp using radiata pine.

Lithium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Li) is a promising novel water-based binder for lithium-ion batteries. The direct synthesis of CMC-Li was innovatively developed using abundant wood dissolving pulp materials from hardwood (HW) and softwood (SW). The resulting CMC-Li-HW and CMC-Li-SW binders possessed a suitable degree of substitutions and excellent molecular weight distributions with an appropriate quantity of long- and short-chain celluloses, which facilitated the construction of a reinforced concrete-like bonding system. When used as cathode binders in LiFePO 4 batteries, they uniformly coated and dispersed the electrode materials, formed a compact and stable conductive network with high mechanical strength and showed sufficient lithium replenishment. The prepared LiFePO 4 batteries exhibited good mechanical stability, low charge transfer impedance, high initial discharge capacity (∼180 mAh/g), high initial Coulombic efficiency (99 %), excellent cycling performance (<3% loss over 200 cycles) and good rate capability, thereby outperforming CMC-Na and the widely used cathode binder polyvinylidene fluoride.

Regenerated cellulose (RC) films have numerous separation and purification applications. However, the mechanical properties of RC films are poor. Because of their very similar chemical structures and excellent compatibility, chitosan (CS) particles were chosen to reinforce bamboo-derived dissolving pulp (BP)-based films. BP/CS blend solutions were obtained by mixing BP and CS particles at different weight percentages into N-methyl-morpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) solvent. The BP/CS composite films prepared by the traditional phase transformation method formed a physically cross-linked network with high packing density for the water evaporation after air-drying. Due to the strong hydrogen bonding between CS and BP revealed by rheological properties and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) data, the CS particles dispersed uniformly in the matrix, and the compatibility of the reinforcement with the matrix was excellent, which was further confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV–vis transmittance data. As the weight percentage of CS increased from 9.09 wt% to 14.24 wt%, the crystallinity of cellulose II increased from 32.20%–38.59%, and the tensile strength of the BP/CS composite films increased from 662.20 MPa to 865.53 MPa, respectively. These results indicate that the tensile strength of the BP/CS composite films was increased by nearly 250.83 %–358.56 % compared with that of the regenerated BP film (188.75 MPa). Moreover, the elongation at break was increased by 51.16 %-41.63 %. These findings provide a new way to prepare ultra-high-strength RC composite films.

High-purity dissolving pulp is essential for synthesizing advanced cellulose derivatives such as cellulose acetate (CA). However, conventional pulping and bleaching methods often involve energy-intensive, high-temperature, and lengthy processes that hinder sustainable production. This study explored four green pulping systems—choline chloride/lactic acid, benzyltriethylammonium chloride/formic acid (BTEAC/FA), p-toluenesulfonic acid, and γ-valerolactone—to sustainably produce high-quality bamboo dissolving pulp, enhancing lignin valorization and solvent recovery. Among these, the BTEAC/FA system (130 °C, 2 h) yielded crude pulp that, after simple two-step bleaching, produced high-grade dissolving pulp with 0.14% hemicellulose, 97.36% cellulose, and 90.20% Fock reactivity. The resulting CA exhibited a high degree of substitution (2.92) and excellent spinning dope transparency (hazen value of 21.5), outperforming bleached kraft-based and commercial CA. Simultaneously, the by-product lignin, with high purity (90.76%) and abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups (3.28 mmol g−1), was readily self-assembled into uniformly dispersed spherical lignin nanoparticles (∼34.89 nm) that effectively stabilized Pickering emulsions. After four cycles, the bleached BTEAC/FA-prepared pulp retained 85.11% α-cellulose. Meanwhile, nanoparticles derived from recycled lignin formed highly durable Pickering emulsions, maintaining droplet sizes of 10.93 μm after 105 days. Additionally, the fourth-recycled DES was valorized into a high-strength wood adhesive, enabling a closed-loop and green processing. Overall, the integrated process provides a mild, low-emission route to produce acetification-grade dissolving pulp while simultaneously offering the strategic employment of the by-product lignin and DES waste liquids, which promote the development of sustainable biorefinery.

Dialdehyde nanocellulose (DANC), obtained via periodate oxidation, has been widely used in foods, cosmetics, and biomedical fields due to its unique characteristics. However, the high-crystallinity and tight structure of cellulose retards the efficiency of periodate oxidation for producing DANC. Herein, a novel sustainable and clean approach with less energy consumption and low cost was developed through LiBr·3H2O (LBTH) non-dissolving pretreatment, which can shorten the oxidation time of the followed periodate oxidation and reduce the oxidant consumption. It was shown that the cellulose Iβ structure of hardwood dissolving pulp (HDP) was largely transformed into an amorphous structure after LBTH non-dissolving pretreatment for 30 min, and the corresponding crystallinity of HDP was reduced from 83.2 to 48.7%. After pretreatment for 60 min, the aldehyde group content of the obtained DANC increased by around 30% compared to the control without pretreatment while the operational cost was reduced by 45%. Moreover, the fabricated DANC showed strong antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. LBTH was recovered and reused, and the pretreatment effectiveness was also maintained. This study provides a sustainable, cost-effective, and clean approach for the preparation of DANC and will promote the application of cellulose nanomaterials.

In this work, a simple synthetic method was used to prepare a new type of magnetic dissolving pulp (MDP) @polydopamine (PDA) fibers. The hydroxyl groups of the fibers were converted into carboxyl groups after succinylation. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were grown in situ on the fibers. The prepared MDP@PDA fibers have catalytic reduction efficiency and adsorption performance for methylene blue organic dyes, and it has been thoroughly tested under various pH conditions. Fe3O4@PDA fibers have high reusability, are easy to separate, and regenerate quickly. The catalytic and adsorption efficiency barely decreases after repeated use. The surface of dissolving pulp fibers with a functionalized multifunctional PDA coating is used to create multifunctional catalysts and adsorbent materials. This study presents a very useful and convenient method for the synthesis and adjustment of MDP@PDA fibers, which have a wide range of potential applications in catalysis and wastewater treatment.
