Evaluation of food additive sodium phytate as a novel draw solute for forward osmosis

Jiaqi Huang,Shu Xiong,Qingwu Long,Liang Shen,Yan Wang

Proper draw solution is a crucial factor to generate a high performance in FO process. In this study, a phytic acid and its salt (PA-Na) were evaluated as novel draw solutes in FO process. The effects of the solution pH and concentration on the physicochemical properties were investigated systematically. Using 0.45 M PA-Na draw solution (pH = 7) and DI water feed solution, a relative high water flux of 19.02 LMH and a low solute flux of 0.51 gMH can be obtained, with HTI-TFC membrane in the PRO mode. An even better performance of a 30.35 LMH water flux and a 0.61 gMH solute flux can be achieved using the self-made HPAN-TFC membrane. The comparison of PA-Na and NaCl draw solutions shows that PA-Na draw solution has a much lower draw solute leakage and a competitive water flux. In addition, the application of PA-Na draw solution for the brackish water desalination was explored. The diluted PA-Na draw solution after FO may be used directly in food production by further dilution. In general, the non-toxicity and satisfactory FO performance of this food additive demonstrate its great potential as a draw solute for FO applications.

Preparation and Characterization of the Forward Osmosis Membrane Modified by MXene Nano-Sheets

Yuqi Nie,Chaoxin Xie,Yi Wang

The Forward Osmosis (FO) membrane was the core of FO technology. Obtaining a high water flux while maintaining a low reverse solute flux has historically been considered the gold standard for a perfect FO membrane. In a thin-film composite FO membrane, the performance of the membrane was determined not only by the material and structure of the porous support layer but also by the structural and chemical properties of the active selective layer. Researchers have selected numerous sorts of materials for the FO membranes in recent years and have produced exceptional achievements. Herein, the performance of the modified FO membrane constructed by introducing new two-dimensional nanomaterial MXene nano-sheets to the interfacial polymerization process was investigated, and the performance of these modified membranes was investigated using a variety of characterization and testing methods. The results revealed that the MXene nano-sheets played an important role in improving the performance of the FO membrane. Because of the hydrophilic features of the MXene nano-sheets, the membrane structure may be tuned within a specific concentration range, and the performance of the modified FO membrane has been significantly enhanced accordingly. The optimal membrane water flux was boosted by around 80%, while its reverse solute flux was kept to a minimum of the resultant membranes. It showed that the addition of MXene nanosheets to the active selective layer could improve the performance of the FO membrane, and this method showed promising application prospects. Keywords:forward osmosis membrane;MXene nano-sheets;water flux;reverse solute flux

Polyvinyl chloride/quaternized poly phenylene oxide substrates supported thin-film composite membranes: Enhancement of forward osmosis performance

Ke Zheng,Shaoqi Zhou,Zuqin Cheng,Guoru Huang

Quaternized poly phenylene oxide (QPPO) was synthesised and used as a modifier material to blend with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to cast the substrate for thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membranes. The addition of QPPO improved the porosity, hydrophilicity , and morphology of the substrate, thereby weakening the internal concentration polarisation of TFC membranes . Furthermore, the introduction of QPPO improved the structure of the active layer , which led to higher water permeability. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the TFC membranes were significantly improved after the introduction of QPPO. As a result, introducing QPPO significantly increased the FO performance. In addition, the TFC membrane based on a 40% QPPO blend ratio exhibited optimal FO performance: a high water flux of 71.21 L h −1  m −2 and an extremely low specific reverse solute flux of 0.079 g L −1 under the active layer facing the draw solution (DS) mode by utilising 1 M NaCl as the DS and deionised (DI) water as the feed solution; this FO performance remained fairly stable during long-term operation. This study suggests that introducing QPPO into the substrate is a sensible strategy for fabricating high-performance TFC FO membranes.

Preparation and Characterization of a Thin-Film Composite Membrane Modified by MXene Nano-Sheets

Yi Wang,Yuqi Nie,Chunhong Chen,Hongjie Zhao,Ye Zhao,Yujin Jia,Jun Li,Zhanguo Li

MXene nano-sheets were introduced into a thin-film composite membrane (TFC) to reduce the mass transfer resistance (concentration polarization) and improve the membrane performance. The process entailed dissolving the MXene nano-sheets in a membrane casting solution using the blending method and introducing them into the porous support layer to prepare a modified thin-film composite forward osmosis (TFC-FO) membrane. The results showed that the water contact angle decreased by about 16%, indicating that the hydrophilicity was strengthened, and the O/N ratio of the active selective layer decreased by 13%, indicating an increased degree of crosslinking, thereby demonstrating that the introduction of MXene nano-sheets changed the properties of the membrane and played a positive role in its physicochemical properties. In contrast to the unmodified TFC-FO membrane, the modified membrane had a slightly higher reverse solute flux, while its water flux increased by about 80%. Its specific reverse osmosis flux was also significantly optimized (only 0.63 g/L). In conclusion, adding MXene nanosheets to TFC-FO membranes led to the modified membranes with better mass transfer, lessened internal concentration polarization (ICP), and better osmotic separation.Keywords:TFC-FO membrane;MXene nano-sheets;internal concentration polarization

Mechanism for regulation of a forward osmosis membrane by the SA/UiO-66-NH2 composite interlayer and the resulting lithium ion concentration performance

Miaolu He,Yushuang Li,Leihao Feng,Jiaqi Wang,Ze Liu,Lei Wang,Jin Wang,Rui Miao,Xudong Wang

The traditional thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membrane has problems such as poor water permeability and low lithium concentration selectivity because the separation layer is too thick and has many defect pores. In this study, a thin and dense separation layer was obtained by constructing a sodium alginate (SA)/UiO-66-NH 2 interlayer to control the attachment amount and diffusion rate of m-phenylenediamine (MPD), which enhanced the performance of the membrane. This paper studies the effect and mechanism of the interlayer on the structure and separation performance of the FO membrane, and explores the lithium ion concentration performance of the interlayer membrane. According to the results, based on the strong interaction between the interlayer and MPD, the equilibrium concentration of MPD available for interfacial polymerization was increased and the diffusion rate of MPD was slowed, resulting in the generation of a thin and dense separation layer. Since the interlayer restricted the escape of bubbles formed in the interfacial polymerization, the separation layer showed a leaf-like structure with increased filtration area and water storage space. Due to the reduced thickness of the separation layer and its leaf-like structures, the water flux increased significantly, and the water flux of the interlayer membrane was 47.9% greater than that of the original membrane. Drawing upon the heightened density of the separation layer and secondary separation of the interlayer, the reverse solute flux was lowered by 37.4%. The interlayer membrane exhibited efficient Li + rejection (R>93%) and the concentration ratio of Li + was close to its theoretical concentration ratio at 1.46 ± 0.03.

Fe3+-modified polyamide membrane with a porous network structure: Rapid permeation and efficient interception of trace organic compounds

Jinze Li,Yingying Zhu,Yifan Zhou,Jinyuan Zhu,Geng Chen

Forward osmosis (FO) is a promising technology in the treatment of trace organic substances. However, the development of this technology is limited by membrane material selection and the long-term chemical stability and durability of the membrane. Whereas ibuprofen, a representative trace organic substances that is hydrophobic and negatively charged, poses potential environmental hazards due to its bioactivity. In this work, polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were modified with iron metal complexes via chelation reactions to achieve high rejection rates for ibuprofen. The Fe 3+ -modified composite FO membrane increased the ibuprofen rejection rate to 98.3 % compared to less than 80.0 % for the original PES membrane. Additionally, the modified membrane enhanced water flux by at least 25.0 % and reduced reverse solute flux to a maximum of 73.0 % of that of the polyamide composite membrane, while significantly improving anti-fouling capabilities. Membrane characterization results revealed that the significant enhancement in the ibuprofen retention rate was due to the addition of a negative charge by forming complexes with Fe 3+ , which increased intermolecular interactions. Additionally, the dense network structure developed by the Fe 3+ -EDTA-2Na modification also contributed to the enhanced membrane performance.

Enhancing Milk Concentration Process Using Conductive Forward Osmosis Membranes: A Study on Membrane Fouling Mitigation

Kun Li,Yuxuan Xue,Meng Li,Ammara Arooj,Xuan Zhang

Mass concentration using conventional forward osmosis (FO) membranes has experienced critical issues including membrane fouling and internal concentration polarization effects. In this study, we designed a conductive FO membrane for milk concentration using the proposed electro-FO system. Specifically, the conductive layer, with a thickness of approximately 1 μm, was constructed through in situ polymerization of pyrrole on the surface of a symmetric polyoxadiazole-co-hydrazide FO membrane. This unique structural design promoted an FO membrane (named PPy-PODH) with a high water flux (12.7 L m–2 h–1) and exceptional reverse flux selectivity (115,000 L mol–1), 3 orders of magnitude higher than those of commercial FO membranes. At an external voltage of 2 V, the conductive FO membrane could maintain a substantial operation (water flux maintained at approximately 6 L m–2 h–1), achieving a high concentration factor of 2.6 toward skim milk. Moreover, high flux recovery ratios of >94.3% were obtained for the PPy-PODH membrane in a “concentration-cleaning” loop experiment, in contrast to 55% for the commercial FO membrane. Overall, this study presents a promising strategy to achieve efficient mass concentration using conductive FO membranes coupled with an electro-FO system.

Organic Solvent Forward Osmosis of Graphene Oxide-Based Membranes for Enrichment of Target Products

Ziqiang Tong,Hongyu Guo,Xiufeng Liu,Baoquan Zhang

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes with GO sheets of different sizes were prepared on porous nylon substrates. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to explore the size effect of GO sheets on the microstructure of GO membranes. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was utilized to observe the membrane morphology and thickness. The effects of GO sheets, membrane thickness, draw solution concentration, and solvent parameters on organic solvent forward osmosis (OSFO) performances were studied in methanol solution. Using pure methanol as the feed solution and 1 M citric acid methanol solution as the draw solution, a 240 nm thick highly laminated GO (HLGO) membrane achieves 4.18 L m–2 h–1 methanol flux with a moderate reverse solute flux. In the enrichment of target products via the OSFO of HLGO membranes, model solutes and atorvastatin calcium were, respectively, employed as target molecules. The solutions containing target products could be successfully concentrated with high solvent fluxes and ideal rejection rates.

High performance forward osmosis cellulose acetate (CA) membrane modified by polyvinyl alcohol and polydopamine

Song Hai-ming,Zhu Li-jing,Zeng Zhi-xiang,Xue Qun-ji

Cellulose acetate (CA) is a low cost and readily available material widely used in forward osmosis (FO) membranes. However, the performance of pure CA membranes is not good enough in salt separation and the traditional modification methods are generally multistep and difficult to control. In this paper, we reported high performance cellulose acetate (CA) composite forward osmosis (FO) membranes modified with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polydopamine (PDA). PVA was first cross-linked onto the surface of CA membranes, and then PDA was coated with a rapid deposition method. The membranes were characterized with respect to membrane chemistry (FTIR and XPS), surface properties comprising wettability (by water contact angle), and osmosis performance. The modified membrane coated by PVA and PDA shown better hydrophilicity and exhibited 16.72 LMH osmotic water flux and 0.14 mMH reverse solute flux with DI water as feed solution and 2.0 M NaCl as draw solution and active layer facing the feed solution. This simple and highly effective modification method makes it as an excellent candidate for further exploration for FO.

Polyamidoamine dendrimer grafted forward osmosis membrane with superior ammonia selectivity and robust antifouling capacity for domestic wastewater concentration

Xian Bao,Qinglian Wu,Wenxin Shi,Wei Wang,Huarong Yu,Zhigao Zhu,Xinyu Zhang,Zhiqiang Zhang,Ruijun Zhang,Fuyi Cui

Developing a forward osmosis (FO) membrane with superior ammonia selectivity and robust antifouling performance is important for treating domestic wastewater (DW) but challenging due to the similar polarities and hydraulic radii of NH 4 + and water molecules. Herein, we investigated the feasibility of using polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer to simultaneously enhance the ammonia rejection rate and antifouling capacity of the thin-film composite (TFC) FO membrane. PAMAM dendrimer with abundant, easily-protonated, terminal amine groups was grafted on TFC-FO membrane surface via covalent bonds , which inspired the TFC-FO membrane surface with appreciable Zeta potential (isoelectric point: pH = 5.5) and outstanding hydrophilicity (water contact angle: 39.83 ± 0.57°). Benefiting from the electrostatic repulsion between the protonated amine layer and NH 4 + -N as well as the concentration-induced diffusion resistance, the introduction of PAMAM dendrimer endowed the grafted membrane with a superior NH 4 + -N rejection rate of 98.23% and a significantly reduced the reverse solute flux when using NH 4 Cl solutions as feed solution. Meanwhile, the perfect balance between the electrostatic repulsion to positively-charged micromoleculer ions (metal ions and NH 4 + -N) and the electrostatic attraction to negatively-charged macromolecular organic foulants together with the hydrophilic nature of amine groups facilitated the enhancement of the grafted membranes in antifouling capacity and hence the NH 4 + -N selectivity (rejection rate of 91.81%) during the concentration of raw DW. The overall approach of this work opens up a frontier for preparation of ammonia-selective and antifouling TFC-FO membrane.
