Wide-Humidity Range Applicable, Anti-Freezing, and Healable Zwitterionic Hydrogels for Ion-Leakage-Free Iontronic Sensors

Yiqian Zhao,Na Yang,Xu Chu,Fuchang Sun,Muhammad Umair Ali,Yuan Zhang,Biao Yang,Yulu Cai,Manyu Liu,Nicola Gasparini,Jiaxin Zheng,Chaohong Zhang,Chuanfei Guo,Hong Meng

Hydrogels have entered the spotlight for applications in soft electronics. It is essential and challenging to obtain hydrogels that can function properly under varying environmental circumstances, that is, 30–90% relative humidity (RH) and −20 to 40 °C due to their intrinsic nature to lose and absorb water upon variations in humidity and temperature. In this work, a green solvent, solketal, is introduced into poly 3-dimethyl-2-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy)ethyl azaniumyl propane-1-sulfonate (poly(DMAPS)) zwitterionic hydrogels. Compared to glycerol, solketal endows hydrogels with greater possibility for further modification as well as improved water content and mechanical performance consistency over 30–90% RH. Encouragingly, the optimized hydrogel demonstrates its unique merits as a dielectric layer in iontronic sensors, featuring non-leaky ions, high sensitivity (1100 kPa −1 ), wide humidity, and temperature range applicability. A wide-humidity range healable and stretchable electrode is attained by combining the hydrogel substrate with Ag paste. A full-device healable and highly-sensitive sensor is developed. This study is a pioneering work that tackles the broad humidity range applicability issue of hydrogels, and demonstrates the ion-leakage-free ionic skins with zwitterionic dielectrics. The outcomes of the study will considerably promote advancements in the fields of hydrogel electronics and iontronic sensors.

Toward sustainable and eco-efficient novel catalytic distillation process for production of solketal using seepage catalytic packing internal

Xingang Li,Jianing Lai,Haifeng Cong,Chang Shu,Runnan Zhao,Yiwei Wang,Hong Li,Xin Gao

The initial aim of this paper is to dramatically improve the post-treatment stage of biodiesel production, which converts problematic glycerol to solketal (SK), by introduction of an eco-efficient integrated reactive and dividing wall distillation process. To overcome the chemical equilibrium limitations and the long post-treatment process with the high energy consumption and waste water emission, this study provides the potentially, sustainable and novel reactive distillation (RD) process for cleanly catalytic synthesis of SK, taking into account costs and environmental impact. The ketalization kinetics experiments were carried out to provide a basis for subsequent experiments and simulations. A reliable model was established for further RD technological design and validated by the pilot-scale experiments. Through sensitivity analysis, the effects of multiplex parameters in RD process were determined. The advanced intensification of SK production by reactive dividing wall column (RDWC) achieves reduction in energy, total annual cost (TAC) and CO 2 emissions of 13.9 %, 18.2 % and 16.4 % (as oil resources), respectively, compared to the optimal SK production by RD process. This proposed technology is also compared with the conventional industrial route of ketalization with 18.7 % energy saving.

Experimental Investigation, Process Design, and Optimization Analysis on the Production of Solketal in the Reactive Dividing Wall Column

Yingbin Liu,Xingang Li,Haifeng Cong,Hong Li,Xin Gao

This paper aims at intensifying the synthesis process of solketal by the reactive dividing wall column (RDWC) through experiments and simulation optimization and proposes a high-efficiency production process of solketal. A lab-scale RDWC was set up to verify the feasibility of synthesizing solketal in the RDWC. The effects of different operating parameters, such as reflux ratio, liquid split ratio, molar ratio of acetone to glycerol, feeding method, and the mass flow rate of side stream, on the experimental process have also been demonstrated and analyzed. Furthermore, an equilibrium-stage model developed by Aspen Plus and verified through comparison with experiments was used for the following simulation to optimize and analyze the solketal synthesis process. The response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the multiobjective problem in RDWC. As a result, a novel competitive solketal synthesis process with an upper partition position RDWC was put forward, which could obtain 99.78% conversion and 99.22 wt % solketal product purity at a 2:1 molar ratio of acetone to glycerol and had a lower energy consumption per unit mass product of 2509.2 J·g–1 compared with other processes. The achievements of this research provide a new way to produce solketal and a significant guideline for the industrial applications of solketal synthesis in the reactive dividing wall column.

Preparation of the WOX/MCM-41 Solid Acid Catalyst and the Catalytic Performance for Solketal Synthesis

Yixuan Huang,Guangcai Zhang,Qinhui Zhang

In the present work, an efficient and stable WOX/MCM-41 solid acid catalyst was prepared by the wet impregnation method. The characterization of powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet–visible, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms confirmed that the impregnation amount and calcination temperature of WOX speciation affected the dispersity and acidity of the resulting catalyst. This WOX/MCM-41 solid acid catalyst was subsequently applied in the ketalization reaction of glycerol and acetone to produce solketal. By catalyst screening and reaction condition optimization, WOX/MCM-41 obtained by impregnating 20 wt % and calcining at 350 °C exhibited the highest solketal yield and catalytic stability.
