Recognizing Functional Groups of MES/APG Mixed Surfactants for Enhanced Solubilization toward Benzo[a]pyrene

Liyuan Wu,Yaxin Liu,Xin Wang,Mengrui Li,Jingya Li,Xiaoran Zhang,Dawen Gao,Haiyan Li

Benzo[a]pyrene is difficult to remove from soil due to its high octanol/water partition coefficient. The use of mixed surfactants can increase solubility but with the risk of secondary soil contamination, and the compounding mechanism is still unclear. This study introduced a new approach using environmentally friendly fatty acid methyl ester sulfonate (MES) and alkyl polyglucoside (APG) to solubilize benzo[a]pyrene. The best result was obtained when the ratio of MES/APG was 7:1 under 6 g/L total concentration, with an apparent solubility (Sw) of 8.58 mg/L and a molar solubilization ratio (MSR) of 1.31 for benzo[a]pyrene, which is comparable to that of Tween 80 (MSR, 0.95). The mechanism indicates that the hydroxyl groups (−OH) in APG form “O–H···OSO2–” hydrogen bonding with the sulfonic acid group (−SO3–) of MES, which reduces the electrostatic repulsion between MES molecules, thus facilitating the formation of large and stable micelles. Moreover, the strong solubilizing effect on benzo[a]pyrene should be ascribed to the low polarity of ester groups (−COOCH3) in MES. Functional groups capable of forming hydrogen bonds and having low polarity are responsible for the enhanced solubilization of benzo[a]pyrene. This understanding helps choose suitable surfactants for the remediation of PAH-contaminated soils.

Interaction of inhalable volatile organic compounds and pulmonary surfactant: Potential hazards of VOCs exposure to lung

Qun Zhao,Yingjie Li,Xiaolong Chai,Linzhen Xu,Linfeng Zhang,Ping Ning,Jianhong Huang,Senlin Tian

Exposure of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) towards lung leads to pulmonary dysfunctions and various lung diseases. However, the interaction of VOCs with pulmonary surfactant (PS) that directly comes into contact with inhaled VOCs is unknown. Here, simulated PS extracted from porcine lungs (EPS) was used to study the interaction with BTEX (i.e., benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and p -xylene) as representatives of VOCs. Surface pressure-area (π-A) isotherms showed that in the presence of individual BTEX, EPS monolayer’s phase conversion from gas to liquid expanded phase was dramatically influenced and its collapse pressure decreased greatly compared to those of EPS alone, which was attributed to the alteration of EPS monolayer’s microstructure characterized by atomic force microscopy and Brewster angle microscopy. Solubilization experiments manifested that EPS and its major components (dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine, DPPC; bovine serum albumin, BSA) exhibited obvious solubilization effects on individual BTEX. The solubilization capacity followed an order: EPS > DPPC > BSA, which was positively correlated with hydrophobicity of individual BTEX. Synergistic solubilization test unveiled that the mixed phospholipid components were largely responsible for the solubilization capacity of EPS. These findings indicate that VOCs exposure may induce potential pulmonary health risk due to the alteration of gas-liquid interfacial properties of PS.

Enhanced solubilization and reductive degradation of 2,2′,4,4′- tretrabromodiphenyl ether by PAC-Pd/Fe nanoparticles in the presence of surfactant

Li Haijie,Huang Guofu,Wang Mianmian

2,2′,4,4′-Tretrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47) is known as a typical polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) due to its high environmental abundance, ecological toxicity, and bioaccumulation. In this study, the influences of three typical surfactants (CTAB, SDS, and TX-100) on BDE47 solubilization and degradation by the polyanionic cellulose–stabilized Pd/Fe (PAC-Pd/Fe) nanoparticles were investigated. The results showed that BDE47 solubilities increased linearly when surfactant concentrations were above their critical micelle concentrations (CMCs), and the solubilization capacities of surfactants for BDE47 followed the order of TX-100 > CTAB > SDS. The appropriate dosages of surfactants were favorable for BDE47 degradation due to enhancing solubilization and accelerating mass transfer, while excessive surfactants inhibited BDE47 degradation due to excessive and thicker micelles formed, but still higher than no surfactant. The influences of various factors (PAC-Pd/Fe nanoparticle dosage, solution pH, and temperature) on BDE47 degradation in TX-100 solution were also tested. The results showed that BDE47 degradation followed the pseudo first-order kinetics model. The degradation rates of BDE47 increased as PAC-Pd/Fe nanoparticle dosage and temperature increased. Weak acidic condition (pH 5.5) was favorable for BDE47 degradation with 96.8% BDE47 was removed within 7.5 min, while alkaline condition (9.0) was not conducive to the degradation of BDE47. The degradation of BDE47 by PAC-Pd/Fe nanoparticles was a catalytic reductive debromination process via active H-species attack, wherein the sequential debromination was the dominant reaction. This study suggests that in the presence of moderate surfactant, PAC-Pd/Fe nanoparticles may be potentially employed to eliminate BDE47 in contaminated water.

Equilibrium and Dynamic Surface Properties of Cationic/Anionic Surfactant Mixtures Based on Carboxylate Gemini Surfactant

Yan Li,Lu Lai,Ping Mei,Sheng-Jin Li,Li Cheng,Zhao-Hua Ren,Yan-Cheng Zheng,Yi Liu

The equilibrium and dynamic surface properties of cationic/anionic surfactant mixtures of carboxylate gemini surfactant (CGS12) and quaternary ammonium salts with different alkyl chain lengths were investigated, and the synergistic properties and solubilization capacity toward phenanthrene of these mixtures were evaluated. Results show that all cationic/anionic surfactant mixtures exhibit negative interaction parameters, indicating the strong synergistic effects in the reduction of surface tension and the formation of micelles. When the mixing ratio is 1:1, the surface tension reaches the minimum value. Moreover, as the alkyl chain length increases, the interaction parameters become more negative. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters suggest that the formation of mixed micelles is exothermic with a positive change in entropy. The tendency of dynamic surface tension curves of these mixtures is similar to that of pure CGS12. At the same concentration, these mixtures exhibit a higher adsorption rate than pure surfactants, and a lower adsorption potential barrier than cationic surfactants. However, for the CGS12/stearyltrimethylammonium bromide mixture, the drop rate constant of surface tension is lower than that of either component. Compared with the pure surfactant solutions, the cationic/anionic surfactant mixtures exhibit higher solubilization capacity toward phenanthrene. As the length of the alkyl chain increases, the solubilization capacity of the mixed cationic/anionic surfactant increases.
