Development of a Low-Molecular-Weight Filtrate Reducer with High-Temperature Resistance for Drilling Fluid Gel System

Fengbao Liu,Jinsheng Sun,Xianbin Huang,Yuan Geng

Currently, conventional polymeric filtrate reducers with high-temperature resistance for use in drilling fluids have high molecular weights, which greatly affects the rheological properties. Therefore, to address the challenges in regulating the rheology and filtration performance of high-density drilling fluids at high temperatures, it is essential to develop low-molecular-weight filtrate reducers with high-temperature resistance. In this study, a low-molecular-weight filtrate reducer with high-temperature resistance (LMF) was prepared via free radical polymerization from acrylamide and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid as monomers, tertiary dodecyl mercaptan as a chain transfer agent, and ammonium persulfate as the initiator. LMF was then characterized by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and gel permeation chromatography. The obtained filtrate reducer exhibits a weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of 3819 and an initial thermal decomposition temperature of 300.7 °C, indicating good thermal stability. The effects of LMF dosage, temperature, and NaCl dosage on the rheology and filtration performance of mud samples were also investigated, and the mechanism of action was revealed by zeta potential, particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, and adsorption measurements. The results reveal that LMF increases the mud sample viscosity and reduces its filtration. For example, the filtration of the mud sample with 2 wt% LMF was 7.2 mL, a reduction of 70% compared to that of a blank mud sample. Further, after aging at 210 °C for 16 h, the filtration of the same sample was 11.6 mL, and that of a mud sample with 2 wt% LMF and 35 wt% NaCl after aging at 180 °C for 16 h was 22 mL. Overall, we have reported a scheme to prepare a low-molecular-weight filtrate reducer with high-temperature resistance and superior filtrate-reducing effects, laying the foundation for the investigation and development of low-molecular-weight filtrate reducers. Keywords:low molecular weight;high-temperature resistance;salinity tolerance;filtrate reducer

Novel Acrylamide/2-Acrylamide-2-3 Methylpropanesulfonic Acid/Styrene/Maleic Anhydride Polymer-Based CaCO3 Nanoparticles to Improve the Filtration of Water-Based Drilling Fluids at High Temperature

Zhichuan Tang,Zhengsong Qiu,Hanyi Zhong,Hui Mao,Kai Shan,Yujie Kang

Filtration loss control under high-temperature conditions is a worldwide issue among water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs). A core–shell high-temperature filter reducer (PAASM-CaCO3) that combines organic macromolecules with inorganic nanomaterials was developed by combining acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), styrene (St), and maleic anhydride (MA) as monomers and nano-calcium carbonate (NCC). The molecular structure of PAASM-CaCO3was characterized. The average molecular weight of the organic part was 6.98 × 105and the thermal decomposition temperature was about 300 °C. PAASM-CaCO3had a better high-temperature resistance. The rheological properties and filtration performance of drilling fluids treated with PAASM-CaCO3were stable before and after aging at 200 °C/16 h, and the effect of filtration control was better than that of commonly used filter reducers. PAASM-CaCO3improved colloidal stability and mud cake quality at high temperatures. Keywords:filtration reducer;high temperature;water-based drilling fluid;nanomaterials;calcium carbonate

Synthesis and mechanism study of an environmentally friendly filtrate reducing agent from humic acid and organic silicon

Bingqian Song,Weichao Du,Haiyan Dong,Shifeng Gao,Yuanzhi Qu,Ren Wang,Zhilei Zhang,Han Ren

In this study, organic silicon was introduced to humic acid for the first time, and set the novel polymer NaHm/AMPS/AM/TSP-L12 (HASSi) as an environmentally friendly filtrate reducing agent, which was developed by using silica modified material (TSP-L12), sodium humic acid (NaHm), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid sodium (AMPS), and acrylamide (AM) as raw materials. The molecular structure, chemical composition of HASSi has been investigated and results show that HASSi shows the chemical structure was conformed to the molecular design. Differential scanning calorimetry–thermogravimetric analysis results illustrate that thermal decomposition temperature of HASSi under nitrogen was 250°C. Though temperature resistance evaluations, HASSi could withstand temperature up to 230°C. Salt and calcium resistance evaluations confirmed its resistance of NaCl could reach up to 5% and CaCl 2 to 0.5%. The filtrate reduce mechanism of HASSi was investigated through various methods, including scanning electron microscope analysis of HASSi aqueous solution, microstructure of filter cake, measurements of zeta potential, and particle size distribution, results showed that HASSi participation in the formation of mud cakes and illustrated an excellent filtration reduction effect. In addition, HASSi was identified as an environmentally friendly filter loss reducing agent through environmental performance evaluation, which shows a great application prospect in oilfield.

Effect of reservoir characteristics and chemicals on filtration property of water-based drilling fluid in unconventional reservoir and mechanism disclosure

Li Qiang,Wang Fuling,Wang Yanling,Zhou Chang,Chen Jiashuo,Forson Kobina,Miao Rufeng,Su Yingjie,Zhang Jinyan

The research objective of this investigation is to explore the influence of filtrate reducer and reservoir characteristics on the filtration reduction of drilling fluid during the drilling process, and the filtration reduction mechanism of drilling fluids is also revealed. The results obtained that a synthetic filtrate reducer can significantly reduce the filtration coefficient than that of the commercial filtrate reducer. Moreover, the filtration coefficient of drilling fluid constructed from synthetic filtrate reducer is reduced from 4.9 × 10 −2 m 3 ·min 1/2 to 2.4 × 10 −2 m 3 ·min 1/2 with an increase in the filtrate reducer content, which is much lower than that of the commercial filtrate reducer. The weaker filtration capacity of the drilling fluid containing the modified filtrate reducer is attributed to the combined action of the filtrate reducer containing multifunctional groups adsorbed on the sand surface and the hydration membrane adsorbed on the sand surface. Furthermore, the increase in reservoir temperature and shear rate increases the filtration coefficient of drilling fluid, indicating that low temperature and shear rate are conducive to improve the filtration capacity. Thus, the type and content of filtrate reducer are preferred during drilling in oilfield reservoir, but increasing reservoir temperature and shear rate are not recommended. It is necessary to confect the drilling mud with appropriate filtrate reducer such as the chemicals prepared herein during drilling operation.

Acrylamide-Based Polymer/Laponite Composite as a Filtration Reducer in Water-Based Drilling Fluids

Ling Lin,Zheng Li,Han Gu,Guixia Xiong,Yuanhao Luo,Di Pu,Pingya Luo

With deep and ultra-deep drilling engineering, silane coupling agent KH-570 was used to modify the surface of nanolaponite, and acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP), and dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) were selected as monomers. A new fluid loss agent, YH-1, was synthesized by aqueous solution polymerization, and the copolymer was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy, TEM, molecular weight analysis, and thermal stability analysis. The results show that the synthesized product is consistent with the molecular structure design goal. The modified nanolaponite was successfully introduced and relatively uniformly distributed in the filtrate reducer, and the molecular weight distribution was wide. After hot rolling at 240 °C for 16 h, it can still maintain good apparent viscosity, plastic viscosity, and dynamic plastic ratio. When the addition amount is 1.5 wt %, the apparent viscosity can still be maintained at 40 mPa·s, and its high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) filtration loss is the lowest compared with the domestic and foreign commercial filter loss reducers. Through particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, and zeta potential analysis, the surface of the filter cake formed after adding YH-1 was smooth and shiny, and the hydration film of bentonite particles was thicker. The adsorption group is adsorbed on the surface of bentonite particles, and the hydration group ionizes a large number of negatively charged groups, which increases the thickness of the hydration film of the bentonite particles and the potential of the bentonite particles. The addition of nanolaponite enhances the plugging effect of mud cake, improves the impermeability of mud cake, and enhances the filtration performance.

Synthesis and properties of poly(acrylamide-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone-co-sodium p-styrene sulfonate) as an anionic fluid loss additive

Bai Xiaodong,Li Ke,Hu Hua,Yan Yancheng,Luo Yumei

A new anionic polymer poly(acrylamide-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone-co-sodium p-styrene sulfonate) (abbreviated as PANS) is synthesized by using acrylamide(AM), N-vinylpyrrolidone(NVP) and sodium p-styrene sulfonate(SSS) as monomers and used as filter loss agents. The optimal synthesis process conditions are explored by orthogonal experiments: molar ratio is AM:NVP:SSS = 3.5; 2; 1, the monomer concentration is 35 wt%, the initiator concentration is 0.40 wt%, the reaction temperature is 45 °C, and the reaction time is 4 h. Fourier infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy( 1 HNMR) hydrogen spectroscopy are used to characterize it. Through thermogravimetric analysis(TG) testing, its temperature resistance is tested, and it is found that it has good thermal stability before 350 °C. The performance test is carried out using American Petroleum Institute(API) evaluation criteria, and it is found that the filter loss before aging is 7.5 mL under 2 wt% addition, and only 8 mL after aging. At the same time, after the addition of PANS, the salt resistance of drilling fluid after high temperature aging is improved, and the filtration loss after aging is only 8.25 mL under the addition of 12 wt% NaCl, while the filtration loss after aging is 8.2 mL under the addition of CaCl 2 at 3 wt%. Through Zeta potential and particle size analysis, after adding PANS, the particle size of clay particles can be greatly reduced after aging, and the zeta potential value of drilling fluid is optimized under calcium salt contamination.

Core–shell structure acrylamide copolymer grafted on nano-silica surface as an anti-calcium and anti-temperature fluid loss agent

Ma Jingyuan,An Yuxiu,Yu Peizhi

The copolymer (PAAN-SiO 2 ) of acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), N -vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) and modified nano-silica (M-SiO 2 ) was synthesized by free radical polymerization in a water solution. The composition, micro-morphology and thermal stability properties of PAAN-SiO 2 were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravity analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that AM, AMPS and NVP were successfully grafted onto the surface of M-SiO 2 and formed a spherical core–shell structure copolymer. A significant reduction in the filtration volume was achieved after PAAN-SiO 2 added, and this phenomenon was even more pronounced after aging at the high temperature. The filtration volume of base slurry containing 2 wt% of calcium chloride after aging at 180 °C was reduced from 186 to 6 ml after adding 2 wt% of PAAN-SiO 2 , which exhibited a special property of anti-calcium contamination at high temperature. The interaction mechanism between PAAN-SiO 2 and bentonite and calcium ions was analyzed by particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, TEM and X-ray diffraction. Because of the stretching of polymer chain under 180 °C that more amide, sulfonic acid groups and cyclic rigid groups were exposed and the strengthening of the connection between PAAN-SiO 2 and clay prevents a large amount of ion exchange between Ca 2+ and clay layers, reducing the agglomeration of clay. Meantime, the distribution of clay particles was more extensive and some particles with a size of 1–10 μm plugged the micro-nano-pores on the filter cake, and eventually the thin and compact filter cake was formed.

Development and mechanism of a multi-target adsorption high-temperature-resistant filtrate reducer: Synergistic effects of Si–O–Si chemical bonds and ionic interactions

Qibing Wang,Luman Liu,Jianlong Wang,Wanjing Luo,Ren Wang,Lili Chen,Jinsheng Sun,Jie Yang,Huicui Sun,Fulong Peng,Jianhua Guo

Deep and ultra-deep drilling operations face significant challenges such as high temperatures and salinity levels. Drilling fluids are prone to failure under these conditions, causing increased filtration loss and frequent downhole accidents. To address these critical issues, this study utilised the high-temperature-stable adsorption properties of siloxanes to synthesise a multi-target adsorption-type fluid filtrate reducer, PFS-1. The molecular structure and thermal stability of PFS-1 were characterised using 1 H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Its effects on the microstructure of drilling fluid were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and zeta potential analysis, thereby elucidating the interaction mechanism between PFS-1 and clay particles. Experimental results demonstrate that PFS-1 possesses excellent thermal stability, with a decomposition onset temperature exceeding 318°C. After thermal ageing at 240°C for 16 h and 72 h, the filtration loss of drilling fluid containing 2 wt% PFS-1 was 9.1 mL and 9.7 mL, respectively. Additionally, in a 15 wt% NaCl brine-based drilling fluid system, the API filtration loss was just 5.6 mL after ageing at 220°C with 2 wt% PFS-1. Results confirm the superior high-temperature resistance and salt tolerance of the novel filtration reducer. Through the synergistic effect of Si–O–Si chemical adsorption and ionic bonding, PFS-1 forms a stable multi-point adsorption on the surface of the clay particles, inhibiting their hydration and aggregation and thereby reducing the fluid filtration loss. Furthermore, the performance of PFS-1 was improved by 18.75 % compared to that of commercial products, indicating its strong potential for application in demanding drilling environments characterised by ultra-high temperatures and high salinity.

Preparation, Performance Evaluation and Mechanisms of a Diatomite-Modified Starch-Based Fluid Loss Agent

Guowei Zhou,Xin Zhang,Weijun Yan,Zhengsong Qiu

Natural polymer materials are increasingly utilized in drilling fluid additives. Starch has come to be applied extensively due to its low cost and favorable fluid loss reduction properties. However, its poor temperature resistance and high viscosity limit its application in high-temperature wells. This study innovatively introduces for the first time diatomite as an inorganic material in the modification process of starch-based fluid loss additives. Through synergistic modification with acrylamide and acrylic acid, we successfully resolved the longstanding challenge of balancing temperature resistance with viscosity control in existing modification methods. The newly developed fluid loss additive demonstrates remarkable performance: It remains effective at 160 °C when used independently. When added to a 4% sodium bentonite base mud, it achieves an 80% fluid loss reduction rate—significantly higher than the 18.95% observed in conventional starch-based products. The resultant filter cake exhibits thin and compact characteristics. Moreover, this additive shows superior contamination resistance, tolerating 30% NaCl and 0.6% calcium contamination, outperforming other starch-based treatments. With starch content exceeding 75%, the product not only demonstrates enhanced performance but also achieves significant cost reduction compared to conventional starch products (typically containing < 50% starch content).
