Acrylamide polymers were widely used as oilfield chemical treatment agents because of their wide viscosity range and versatile functions. However, with the increased formation complexity, their shortcomings such as poor solubility and low resistance to temperature, salt, and calcium were gradually exposed. In this paper, acrylamide (AM)/2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) copolymers were synthesized by aqueous solution polymerization and inverse emulsion polymerization, respectively. The aqueous polymer (W-AM/AMPS) and the inverse emulsion polymer (E-AM/AMPS) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and particle size analysis. The rheological properties, filtration properties, and sodium ion (Na+) and calcium ion (Ca2+) resistance were investigated. The results showed that E-AM/AMPS not only had a dissolution speed 4 times faster than that of W-AM/AMPS but also had superior shear-thinning performance both before and after aging. The filtration property of the bentonite system containing 2 wt % E-AM/AMPS was also better than that of the bentonite system containing 2 wt % W-AM/AMPS. In addition, E-AM/AMPS also exhibited extremely high tolerance for Na+ and Ca2+. The huge difference between rheological and filtration properties of E-AM/AMPS and W-AM/AMPS in drilling fluid can be attributed to the differences in the polymer microstructure caused by the two polymerization methods. Both FTIR and 1H NMR results showed that more hydrogen bonds were formed between E-AM/AMPS molecular groups and molecular chains, which led to a cross-linked network structure of E-AM/AMPS which was observed by TEM. It was this cross-linked network structure that made E-AM/AMPS have a high viscosity and allowed it to be better adsorbed on bentonite particles, thus exhibiting excellent rheological and filtration behavior. In addition, E-AM/AMPS powder had a high specific surface area so that it can be dissolved in water faster, greatly reducing the time and difficulty of configuring drilling fluid.

Drilling fluids with poor filtration property are disadvantageous for well drilling, easily causing wellbore instability and formation collapse. This work reports the novel utilization of tea polyphenols (TPs) as a fluid loss additive in the bentonite–water-based drilling fluids (BT-WDFs). The influence of TP concentration and temperature on the filtration property of the fluids was described. The results showed that an increase in the TP concentration contributed to a decrease in fluid loss. Especially BT-WDFs added with 3.0 wt % TP exhibited a low fluid loss (less than or approximately 10 mL) at room temperature and high temperatures (∼150 °C), displaying better filtration property and temperature resistance than common fluid loss agents. Through the investigations on the viscosity, the particle size of TP/BT-WDFs, and micromorphology of filter cakes, the dispersion effect of TP was considered as the dominant factor for the filtration property of TP/BT-WDFs. TP molecules, containing many functional groups, could attach to the surface of bentonite platelets, improve the hydration of bentonite particles, and promote the dispersion of bentonite particles. At room temperature, TP facilitated the dispersion of hydrated bentonite. The existing “house-of-cards” structure was weakened, decreasing the particle size and viscosity of TP/BT-WDFs. At high temperature, bentonite dehydrated and aggregated, thereby increasing the particle size of bentonite particles, decreasing the viscosity of bentonite dispersion, and resulting in a high fluid loss. The addition of TP dispersed bentonite from face-to-face (FF) attraction to edge-to-face (EF) attraction, recovered the house-of-cards structure, and increased the viscosity of TP/BT-WDFs. Under the dispersion effect of TP, an appropriate grain composition of bentonite particles was formed and the pore throats were plugged to prevent the penetration of water. Finally, a compact and thin filter cake was built and the fluid loss was greatly reduced. The TP/BT-WDFs exhibited good filtration property. TP is a prospective candidate to be a high-performance and biodegradable fluid loss additive in well-drilling applications.

To meet the escalating demand for oil and gas exploration in microporous reservoirs, it has become increasingly crucial to develop high-performance plugging materials. Through free radical grafting polymerization technology, a carboxymethyl chitosan grafted poly (oligoethylene glycol) methyl ether methyl methacrylate acrylic acid copolymer (CCMMA) was successfully synthesized. The resulting CCMMA exhibited thermoresponsive self-assembling behavior. When the temperature was above its lower critical solution temperature (LCST), the nanomicelles began to aggregate, forming mesoporous aggregated structures. Additionally, the electrostatic repulsion of AA chains increased the value of LCST. By precisely adjusting the content of AA, the LCST of CCMMA could be raised from 84.7 to 122.9 °C. The rheology and filtration experiments revealed that when the temperature surpassed the switching point, CCMMA exhibited a noteworthy plugging effect on low-permeability cores. Furthermore, it could be partially released as the temperature decreased, exhibiting temperature-switchable and self-adaptive plugging properties. Meanwhile, CCMMA aggregates retained their reversibility, along with thermal thickening behavior in the pores. However, more detailed experiments and analysis are needed to validate these claims, such as a comprehensive study of the CCMMA copolymer’s physical properties, its interaction with the reservoir environment, and its performance under various conditions. Additionally, further studies are required to optimize its synthesis process and improve its efficiency as a plugging material for oil and gas recovery in microporous reservoirs.Keywords:temperature-switchable;intelligent fluid;adaptive;rheological properties;filtration loss

High temperature would dramatically worsen rheological behaviors and increase filtration loss volumes of drilling fluids. Synthetic polymers with high temperature stability have attracted more and more attention. In this paper, a novel quadripolymer was synthesized using 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylamide (AM), sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS), and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC). Firstly, the molecular structure was studied by Fourier transform–infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) analysis. It was shown that the synthetic polymer contained all the designed functional groups. Moreover, the effect of temperature and the quadripolymer concentration on the rheological behavior and filtration loss of the bentonite-free drilling fluid were investigated. It was experimentally established that when the adding amount of the quadripolymer was 0.9 wt%, the prepared drilling fluid systems exhibited relatively stable viscosities, and the filtration losses could be controlled effectively after hot rolling aged within 180 °C. Further, it was confirmed that the bentonite-free drilling fluid containing the synthesized quadripolymer had good reservoir protection performance. In conclusion, the synthetic quadripolymer is a promising rheology modifier and a filtrate reducer for the development of the bentonite-free drilling fluid at high temperature. Keywords:synthetic polymer;high temperature;bentonite-free drilling fluid;rheology;filtration

With increasingly intensified energy demand and environmental pressure, it has been of great interest to develop high-performance and environmentally friendly drilling fluid additives, and natural-derived biopolymers are promising candidates. In this work, carboxymethyl chitosan (CM-CS) with different molecular weight , namely high- (CM-HMWCS), medium- (CM-MMWCS1, CM-MMWCS2) and low-molecular-weight (CM-LMWCS) CM-CS, were prepared and the structural factors including molecular weight (MW), degree of deacetylation (DD) and degree of substitution (DS) were determined. The impact of different CM-CS on rheological, filtration and inhibition properties of bentonite-based drilling fluid was evaluated, as well as the bentonite-polymer interactions. The experimental results showed that the lower the MW the higher the DS, while the DD seemed unaffected during reactions. All obtained CM-CS could effectively reduce the yield point of bentonite suspension before and after aging at 135 °C and 150 °C for 16 h, and the lower MW ones had better yield point-reducing effect and showed little influence on plastic viscosity. Besides, different CM-CS possessed the ability to control filtrate loss as well, which showed a high dependence on MW, the CM-HMWCS had the best filtration reduction performance. Meanwhile, all CM-CS had better inhibition properties to prevent clay swelling and shale disintegration than conventional inhibitors, in which the CM-MMWCS2 with medium MW and relatively higher DS exhibited the best inhibition. Therefore, the obtained different CM-CS was versatile and could perform thinning, filtration reduction and shale inhibition properties. These properties were dominated by their amphoteric molecular structures, and also related to the molecular weight.

Aiming at the characteristics of low shear resistance and high filtration loss of guar gum-fracturing fluid, a high-efficiency organic zirconium crosslinker was prepared. In addition, the effects of different factors on the filtration coefficient and apparent viscosity of fracturing fluid were studied, and this study explores the micro mechanisms of various factors affecting the filtration coefficient from a molecular dynamics perspective. The results show that the antifiltration ability of guar gum-fracturing fluid is inversely proportional to the fluid viscosity. The increase of crosslinker content and reservoir pressure is beneficial to improve the viscosity and antishear ability of guar gum-fracturing fluid. When the crosslinker content is 0.25% and pressure is 30 MPa, the fracturing fluid parameters are 145 mPa·s and 2.1 × 10 −2 m 3 · min 1/2 , respectively, while the increase of reservoir temperature and the shear rate reduces the rheology and shear resistance of guar gum-fracturing fluid, so that the viscosity and filtration coefficient of fracturing fluid at 180°C and 200 s -1 are 123 mPa·s and 2.3 × 10 -2 m 3 ·min 1/2 , respectively. This work not only paves a new avenue for synthesizing organic zirconium as a crosslinker but also provides an efficient measure to reduce the filtration of guar gum-fracturing fluid on the oil and gas reservoirs.

After the limitations of polymer-based fracturing due to poor clean-up property during flowback after fracturing treatment, viscoelastic surfactant (VES) received very huge attention in the last three decades, especially in low permeability reservoirs. In this study, a Novel CO 2 -induced clean fracturing fluid (SDS-TMTAD-CO 2 ) is formulated with simulated formation water (23,003 mg L −1 ) after optimization experiments according to the proposed parameters (i.e., 70 °C, economical, easily preparation, and environment-friendly). The results of rheological experiments show that the apparent viscosity of the fracturing fluid system increases to a certain extent under high salt conditions and possesses sufficient self-healing property against high shear tolerance. At different temperatures (25, 50, and 70 °C), the thermodynamic properties, fluid viscoelasticity, and proppant carrying capacity meet the requirements of the fracturing fluid industry standards. After adding kerosene (0.02 mol L −1 ); the gel breaking fluid viscosity (3.2 mPa s), anti-swelling rate (91.3%), and interfacial tension (2.3 × 10 −2 mN m −1 ) are holding promising conditions during the flowback period, clay swelling, and residual oil saturation, respectively. The filtration and core damage experimental results meet the national industry standard for fracturing fluids. The SEM results show that the fluid system after reaction forms a unified adsorption film on the core surface. Hopefully, this fluid system will be proved as a good candidate by means of excellent proppant transportation ability, anti-swelling, easy gel structure breaking, low filtration, and less formation damage in low permeable formations with an increase in productivity.

To effectively reduce the filtration rate of water-based fracturing fluid and promote the pressure holding effect of fracturing fluid in underground unconventional reservoirs, an efficient and clean organic-boron cross-linker was synthesized with boric acid and low alcohols. The results obtained that the synthesized organoboron cross-linker exhibits better fluid loss performance to water-based fracturing fluid than the commercially available cross-linker. This organoboron cross-linker allowed decreasing filtration coefficient more than 0.74 × 10 –2 m 3 ·min 1/2 as a result of the network structure formed by the organoboron cross-linker and guar gum molecule. However, commercially available cross-linker exhibits a relatively large filtered mass of water more than 1.33 × 10 –2 m 3 ·min 1/2 at the same condition. Meanwhile, the cross-linked guar gum fracturing fluid can significantly improve the fluid loss property with the increase of cross-linker content and pressure, and an increased fluid filtration gradually was revealed with increasing the reservoir temperature and current speed. Moreover, the damage of shale reservoir caused by the prepared boron cross-linker was only 11%, which was lower than 18% of the commercial boron cross-linker under the same conditions.

During ultradeep oil and gas drilling, fluid loss reducers are highly important for water-based drilling fluids, while preparing high temperature- and salt-resistance fluid loss reducers with excellent rheology and filtration performance remains a challenge. Herein, a micro-crosslinked amphoteric hydrophobic association copolymer (i.e., DADC) was synthesized using N,N-dimethyl acrylamide, diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, hydrophobic monomer, and pentaerythritol triallyl ether crosslinker. Due to the synergistic effects of hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic association, and micro-crosslinking, the DADC copolymer exhibited outstanding temperature- and salt-resistance. The rheological experiments have shown that the DADC copolymer had excellent shear dilution performance and a certain degree of salt-responsive viscosity-increasing performance. The DADC copolymer could effectively adsorb on the surface of bentonite particles through electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonds, which bring more negative charge to the bentonite, thus improving the hydration and dispersion of bentonite particles as well as the colloidal stability of the drilling fluids. Moreover, the drilling fluids constructed based on the DADC copolymer exhibited satisfactory rheological and filtration properties (FL HTHP = 12 mL) after aging at high temperatures (up to 200 °C) and high salinity (saturated salt) environments. Therefore, this work provided new insights into designing and fabricating high-performance drilling fluid treatment agents, demonstrating good potential applications in deep and ultradeep drilling engineering.

Using common corn stalks as raw materials, a functional dense-structured carbon microsphere with good elastic deformation and certain rigid support was modified from biomass through a step-by-step hydrothermal method. The composition, thermal stability, fluid-loss reduction performance, and reservoir protection performance of the modified carbon microspheres were studied. Research indicates that after hydrothermal treatment, under the multi-level structural action of a small amount of proteins in corn stalks, the naturally occurring cellulose, polysaccharide organic compounds, and part of the ash in the stalks are adsorbed and encapsulated within the long-chain network structure formed by proteins and cellulose. By attaching silicate nanoparticles with certain rigidity from the ash to the relatively stable chair-type structure in cellulose, functional dense-structured carbon microspheres were ultimately prepared. These carbon microspheres could still effectively reduce fluid loss at 200 °C. The permeability recovery value of the cores treated with modified biomass carbon microspheres during flowback reached as high as 88%, which was much higher than that of the biomass itself. With the dense network-like chain structure supplemented by small-molecule aldehydes and silicate ash, the subsequent invasion of drilling fluid was successfully prevented, and a good sealing effect was maintained even under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. Moreover, since this functional dense-structured carbon microsphere achieved sealing through a physical mechanism, it did not cause damage to the formation, showing a promising application prospect.

In order to broaden the application of clean fracturing fluid in ultra-high temperature reservoirs, a surfactant gel for high-temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid was developed with a gemini cationic surfactant as the main agent in this work. As the fracturing fluid, the rheological property, temperature resistance, gel-breaking property, filtration property, shear recovery performance and core damage property of surfactant gel were systematically studied and evaluated. Results showed the viscosity of the system remained at 25.2 mPa·s for 60 min under a shear rate of 170 s−1at 200 °C. The observed core permeability damage rate was only 6.23%, indicating low formation damage after fracturing. Due to micelle self-assembly properties in surfactant gel, the fluid has remarkable shear self-repairability. The filtration and core damage experimental results meet the national industry standard for fracturing fluids. The gel system had simple formulation and excellent properties, which was expected to enrich the application of clean fracturing fluid in ultra-high temperature reservoirs. Keywords:clean fracturing fluid;VES;surfactant gel;rheology behavior;thermal stability
