As drilling wells continue to move into deep ultra-deep layers, the requirements for temperature resistance of drilling fluid treatments are getting higher and higher. Among them, blocking agent, as one of the key treatment agents, has also become a hot spot of research. In this study, a high temperature resistant strong adsorption rigid blocking agent (QW-1) was prepared using KH570 modified silica, acrylamide (AM) and allyltrimethylammonium chloride (TMAAC). QW-1 has good thermal stability, average particle size of 1.46 μm, water contact angle of 10.5°, has a strong hydrophilicity, can be well dispersed in water. The experimental results showed that when 2 wt% QW-1 was added to recipe A (4 wt% bentonite slurry+0.5 wt% DSP-1 (filtration loss depressant)), the API filtration loss decreased from 7.8 to 6.4 mL. After aging at 240 °C, the API loss of filtration was reduced from 21 to 14 mL, which has certain performance of high temperature loss of filtration. At the same time, it is effective in sealing 80–100 mesh and 100–120 mesh sand beds as well as 3 and 5 μm ceramic sand discs. Under the same conditions, the blocking performance was superior to silica (5 μm) and calcium carbonate (2.6 μm). In addition, the mechanism of action of QW-1 was further investigated. The results show that QW-1 with amide and quaternary ammonium groups on the molecular chain can be adsorbed onto the surface of clay particles through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction to form a dense blocking layer, thus preventing further intrusion of drilling fluid into the formation.

Water-based drilling fluids are prone to contamination by high temperatures and high salt, resulting in a deteriorated filtration performance of the drilling fluids, posing a significant threat to the safety of drilling operations. This study utilized N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC), N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP), and nanomaterials (nano-SiO2 and nanolaponite) to prepare a polymer nanocomposite NP-3 as a filtratef reducer for drilling fluids. The thermal stability evaluation of the polymer solution revealed that the thermal degradation temperature order of the different structural units of the polymer is DMAA < AMPS ≈ DMDAAC < NVP, and the temperature resistance of NP-3 in the solution is 220 °C. Evaluation of drilling fluid performance demonstrated that 3.5 wt % NP-3 enabled the drilling fluid to resist contamination from 15 wt % NaCl at 230 °C, with an American Petroleum Institute (API) filtration loss and high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) filtration loss after hot rolling of 4.2 and 22.0 mL, respectively. At high temperatures, the degradation of the polymer composite releases nanoparticles, which enhance the density of the filter cake, allowing for adjustable and enhanced control of filtration performance of drilling fluids under high-temperature and high-salty conditions.

To overcome the negative effects of high temperature and salt pollution on the performance of drilling fluid in deep and ultra-deep wells, it is imperative to develop a high- temperature-and salt-resistant filtrate reducer. A zwitterionic quaternary copolymer (DADN) of N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC), and N-vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) was synthesized in an aqueous solution by free radical copolymerization reaction. The composition, structure, and thermal stability of the copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Furthermore, the filtration loss reduction performance of DADN was evaluated according to the American Petroleum Institute (API) standard. The mechanisms of filtrate loss reduction and salt resistance were revealed based on the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, adsorption isotherm and zeta potential analysis for the water-based drilling fluid (WBDF) containing DADN, and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analysis and Brunner–Emmet–Teller (BET) analysis for the corresponding filter cake. The results showed that the thermal decomposition of DADN mainly happened over 298 ℃. Meanwhile, DADN exhibited the most outstanding filtration loss reduction ability compared to three commercially filtrate reducers (Driscal D, CMC and PAC-Lv). Specifically, the filtration losses of Driscal D/WBDF, CMC/WBDF and PAC-Lv/WBDF were 18.2, 31.2 and 24.8 mL after hot rolling at 220 °C for 16 h, respectively, while the filtration loss of DADN was only 6.5 mL. It was found that 2% DADN showed excellent filtration loss reduction ability at 220 °C and 15% NaCl. As confirmed by the SEM, EDS and adsorption isotherm results, strong adsorption of DADN on bentonite was obtained even under a high temperature and high-salinity environment. In particular, in the high-salinity environment, a firm “star network” structure formed by bentonite/DADN was observed by TEM, significantly improving the colloidal stability and filter cake compactness of WBDF.

High temperatures degrade drilling fluid performance and endanger drilling safety when drilling deep and ultra-deep wells. The development of a new high-temperature drilling fluid additive to maintain drilling fluid performance in high-temperature environments is critical. A polymer nanocomposite (ADA@SM) was synthesized from the monomers styrene (St), methyl methacrylate (MMA), acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) through a free-radical copolymerization reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) were used to characterize the structure of ADA@SM, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the microstructure of ADA@SM, indicating that it had a "star-net" structure. TGA analysis showed that the thermal decomposition temperature of ADA@SM was above 274 °C. The rheological and filtration properties of drilling fluids with ADA@SM were studied before and after aging at high temperatures (150–240 °C). The rheological model of the drilling fluid containing 2.5 wt% ADA@SM was found to be consistent with the Herschel-Buckley model. After aging at 220 °C, the filtration loss for API and HTHP was 8.4 mL and 29.8 mL, respectively. Using particle size analysis and zeta potential analysis, ADA@SM produced a drilling fluid with good particle size distribution and colloidal stability in high temperature environments . SEM analysis showed that ADA@SM adsorbed on the surface of the bentonite particles, which improved the compactness of the filter cake. The relative molecular weight (Mn) of ADA@SM decreased from 59671 to 5908 after degradation at high temperatures, and ADA@SM released polymer nanospheres , which effectively reduced the filtration loss of the drilling fluid.

Traditional linear polymeric filtrate reducers for water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs) are insufficient for drilling engineering requirements, even with adjustments in the type and proportion of functional groups in the copolymer, especially under high-temperature and high-salinity conditions. In this study, a dual cross-linked copolymer (named AAS-L 4% -M 0.5‰ ) was synthesized through free radical copolymerization using lauryl methacrylate (LMA) as hydrophobic associated segments and N, N ’-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as the chemical crosslinker. The synergistic effect of covalent micro-crosslinking and hydrophobic association in AAS-L 4% -M 0.5‰ were systematically investigated and demonstrated. After aging at 220 °C for 16 h, the WBDFs containing 1 % AAS-L 4% -M 0.5‰ exhibited high-temperature/high-pressure filtration loss (FL HTHP ) and American Petroleum Institute filtration loss (FL API ) of 34 mL and 10 mL, respectively, representing reductions of 50 % and 38 % compared to the linear polymer AAS-L 0 -M 0 . Even after aging at 200 °C in saturated salt solution conditions, the WBDFs containing AAS-L 4% -M 0.5‰ maintain excellent filtration properties with FL API value of 7.5 mL, achieving an 83 % reduction compared to AAS-L 0 -M 0 . Moreover, because of the three-dimensional spatial network structure formed by dual cross-linking, AAS-L 4% -M 0.5‰ effectively inhibits unwanted foaming caused by the polyelectrolyte effect. Therefore, this work provides a simple but effective approach to develop temperature-resistant and salt-tolerant filtrate reducers with excellent workability.

To control the filtration loss of drilling fluids in salt–gypsum formations, a novel type of zwitterionic polymer gel (DNDAP) was synthesized by free radical polymerization, which was used as a salt- and calcium-resistant fluid loss reducer for water-based drilling fluids (WBDF). DNDAP was prepared with N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP), Diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC), 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropaneonic acid (AMPS), and isopentenol polyether (TPEG) as raw materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) were used to characterize the composition and structure of the DNDAP copolymer. The thermal stability of DNDAP was evaluated by the use of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). WBDF with DNDAP was analyzed for zeta potential and particle size and the corresponding filter cake underwent energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The results showed that the thermal decomposition of DNDAP mainly occurred above 303 °C. DNDAP exhibits excellent rheological and filtration properties in water-based drilling fluids, even under high-temperature aging (up to 200 °C) and high salinity (20 wt% NaCl or 5 wt% CaCl2) environments. The strong adsorption effect of DNDAP makes the particle size of bentonite reasonably distributed to form a dense mud cake that reduces filtration losses.

We investigated the performance of viscoelastic surfactant (VES) solution when applied in treatment on the uninvaded matrix using core flooding tests to analyze the impact of VES/CaCl2concentration on fluid viscosity. In this paper, core samples from Tahe carbonate reservoir, with an average permeability less than 0.02 × 10−3μm−2and a small average porosity in the range of approximately 0.04–5.24% are used in the experiments. Computed tomography (CT) scanning is used to provide a detailed description of inner structure variation of cores after the acid system treatment. The results confirmed that a large pressure difference contributed to fracture propagation and the relative permeability of water increased significantly after the treatment. It was also found that higher concentrations of VES and/or Ca2+induced higher viscosity and a stronger fracturing effect, while a lower concentration improved the reaction rates and etching effect, generating small worm holes inside the core. Foam in-situ produced during the etching process is the major contributor to the fluid viscosity enhancement. The permeability of fracture formed on the surface of the core is more sensitive to the confining pressure. These findings can help better understand the rheological properties of the acid system and etching and fracturing mechanisms during acid treatment, and which provides instructions for field implementation.Keywords:VES/HCl solution;carbonate rock;acid etching;X-CT scan;filter loss;core flow experiment

Nanoscale plugging agent is essential to wellbore stability of troublesome shale formation in the drilling of oil and gas wells. In this paper, polymeric nanospheres (PNS) with a double cross-linked structure were synthesized using monomers of styrene (ST), acrylamide (AM), 2-Acrylamide- 2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC). PNS were characterized by FTIR, SEM and TGA. The plugging performance of PNS was analyzed using nitrogen adsorption experiments and SEM. And compatibility with water based drilling fluid (WBM) was studied. Experimental results showed that PNS had a mean particle size of 133 nm, and could retain about half of the original size after high temperature treatment under 150–200°C. TGA showed that the initial decomposition temperature of PNS is around 315°C. After plugging by PNS, both the specific surface area and pore volume of the shale cuttings decreased substantially compared with those of shale samples treated with water. Thus, PNS was thermal stable in WBM under high temperature and could effectively plug shale pores. Besides, PNS was beneficial to reduce both API and HTHP fluid loss of WBM.

High filtration loss of the oil-based drilling fluids restricts their application in reservoirs production at high temperature and high pressure. In this work, modified nano-microsphere P(AM-co-AA)/PSt filtration reducers are designed to reduce filtration loss by excellent dispersion in oil medium, excellent water-absorption swelling and auxiliary emulsification and prepared by inverse phase emulsion polymerization using acrylamide, acrylic acid and styrene, followed by modification with stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride. The modified nano-microspheres absorb water to reach an equilibrium swelling rate of 950%. Additionally, the water contact angle increases to 70.3° and the temperature resistance reaches up to 240 o C. The permeability of the filter cake can be decreased through the utilization of swelling microspheres to plug tiny cracks, as well as by intertwining organo-montmorillonite sheets with polymer chains detaching from weakly crosslinked microspheres. Especially, due to their excellent dispersion in the oil medium, the microspheres gather at the oil-water interface, thereby stabilizing the emulsification state of oil-based drilling fluids. These two points are conducive to reducing filtration loss. After thermal aging for 16 h at 180 o C, oil-based drilling fluid by adding 4% microspheres exhibits a low filtration loss volume of 7.8 mL at 180 o C and 3.5 MPa. These hydrophilic nano-microspheres with a partially alkylated structure have a considerable practical application prospect as filtration loss reducers of oil-based drilling fluids.

In deep and ultra-deep well drilling, ultra-high temperatures and high salt lead to poor drilling fluid performance. In this study, N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), 4-acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) and modified laponite (m-LAP) were polymerized into polymer nanocomposites PDADA-LAP by free radical polymerization in aqueous solution. The structure of PDADA-LAP was characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR and XPS. The microstructure of PDADA-LAP was characterized by TEM, SEM and EDS. The results showed that LAP improved the network structure of the polymer by hydrogen bonding and covalent bonding. The effect of temperature on the degradation of the polymer solution was investigated. The experiment showed that the degradation temperatures of the polymer was 220 °C. PDADA-LAP was used as a filtrate reducer in drilling fluids. The results showed that 3.0 wt% PDADA-LAP could improve the filtration performance of drilling fluids at high temperature of 220 °C and resist contamination with 20 wt% NaCl. The FL API and FL HTHP were 7.0 mL and 28.6 mL, respectively. PDADA-LAP is adsorbed on bentonite particles through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, which slows down the contamination of bentonite particles by NaCl and gives the drilling fluid a good effect to reduce fluid loss at high temperature and high salt.

A new water-soluble polymer was prepared and evaluated as a filtrate reducer for oil well cementing. The filtrate reducer (WSP) was synthesized from 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylic acid (AA), dimethyl acrylamide (DMAA), and sodium allylsulfonate (SA) by aqueous free radical polymerization. The synthesis conditions were optimized by orthogonal experiment. The molecule structure of the synthesized copolymer (WSP) was verified by Fourier transformer infrared spectrum (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy ( 1 H-NMR). The molecule weight of the synthesized copolymer was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The thermal stability of the synthesized copolymer was tested by thermogravimetry and differential thermogravimetry (TG and DTG). When the dosage of WSP is up to 3% in fresh water cement slurry, the FL API can be controlled within 58 mL. In 37% salt water cement slurry, the FL API can be controlled within 90 mL when the dosage of WSP is 5%. The thermal degradation of WSP is not obvious before 289 °C. Compared with a commercial filtrate reducer BS-100L and a reported copolymer HTF200C, the WSP has better performance. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133 , 43824.

Filtration control of drilling fluid plays an important role in the process of wellbore construction and ensures the success of drilling operation. A swellable polymer microsphere (SPM) of methylmethacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA), and lauryl methacrylate (LMA) was synthesized with suspension polymerization. Its swelling property was characterized by oil adsorption capacity measurement. First, the effect of SPM on the filtration and rheological properties of virgin organic clay dispersion was investigated. Then the filtration and rheological properties of mineral oil-based drilling fluid in the presence of SPM were elucidated under the respective conditions of hot aging temperature, oil to water ratio and density. Furthermore, the filtration control properties between SPM and two traditional filtration loss additives including modified lignite and asphaltic additive was compared. Addition of SPM exhibited obvious influence on the viscosity of oil-based drilling fluid especially at high concentration of 3 w/v%, therefore, a concentration of lower than 1.5 w/v% was recommended. After hot aging at 200 °C, the oil-based drilling fluid containing 1 w/v% SPM exhibited an API filtration loss decrease of 85%, and HTHP filtration loss decrease of 79% in comparison with the base fluid. After hot rolling at 180 °C, the API filtration loss decreased by 2%, 24% and 53%, and the HTHP filtration loss decreased by 42%, 54% and 65% respectively when 1 w/v% asphaltic additive, modified lignite and SPM are in the presence of the base fluid. Besides decreasing the filtration loss volume under high temperatures, incorporation of SPM also improves the filter cake quality of oil-based drilling fluid. SPM is capable of adsorbing considerable base oil and become swellable. The swellable polymer microspheres with favorably deformable and compressible properties can effectively fill the voids of filter cake and reduce the permeability, which leads to low filtration loss and minimization of solids invasion.
