Nanofibrillated cellulose paper (nanopaper) has drawn increasing attention as a potential material for various areas, due to its extremely smooth surface, excellent optical transparency and sequent nanofiber matrix. To extend nanopaper application as the analytical platform, nanopaper-based microfluidics has quickly advanced recently. However, the current method of patterning microchannels on nanopaper which is the basic for establishing microfluidic (i.e., 3D printing and spray coating), still has some limitations, including low precision and long preparation time. So, in this study, we utilized laser cutting to fabricate microchannel patterns on nanopaper by burning the surface of nanopaper. Through systematic parameters (laser cutting speed and power) optimization, we identified the optimal laser cutting conditions, enhancing both efficiency and accuracy. The minimum depth and width of the microchannels were reduced to 15 μm and 58 μm, respectively. The entire fabrication process, including drying, was completed in less than 35 minutes. Compared to the existing methods, this method has smaller microchannels size, time saving and no need for additional molds or equipment those advantages which contribute its novelty and accuracy. By arranging different shapes of lines, microchannels for various sensing were developed. As a proof-of-concept, we developed two functional nanopaper-based analyzer devices (NanoPADs). With a detection limit of 2.2 mM for glucose and 281 fM for Rhodamine B (RhB), both demonstrating excellent performance and low detection limits. The results indicate that our laser-cutting nanopaper microchannels may serve as a platform for developing high-performance analytical devices which may spark the development of nanopaper in the future.

Laser cutting electrode technology is an environmentally friendly and sustainable manufacturing method that offers many benefits, such as low energy consumption and greenhouse gases, no waste production, no tool wear, flexible manipulation, and multi-scale processing. However, achieving high cutting quality with adjustable notch shape and controllable dimension precision is still a cutting-edge challenge. In addition, the influence of laser cutting on the microscopic structure and electrochemical performance of battery electrodes has not been fully illustrated. Here, the Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) electrode is cut using a femtosecond laser technology. The processing parameters are systematically optimized, and the influence of laser cutting taper structure on the structure and performance of LTO electrodes is comprehensively investigated. It is found that laser photoionization and the generated plasma could create oxygen vacancies and thus more Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ defects in the LTO electrodes, resulting in increased electronic conductivity. Moreover, proper taper structure could help improve electrolyte infiltration as well as Li + diffusion kinetics. As a result, the laser cutting LTO electrode with the optimized taper angle of T = 0.004 shows excellent electrochemical performance. The capacity retention is more than 99.2 % after 400 cycles at 1C, and the specific capacity reaches ∼60 mAh g −1 at a high rate of 60C, which is about 1.7 times higher than that of mechanically cutting LTO electrodes. The outstanding electrochemical performance is also demonstrated by LiFePO 4 ||Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 full cells. This work could pave the way for the development and application of laser technology in cutting battery electrodes.

Thermoplastic polyurethane microcapillary film (TPU-MCF), as a novel extruded product, inherently contains an array of circular micron-sized capillaries embedded inside the polymer matrix. With the aid of simple laser cutting and conventional sealing technologies, a rapid prototyping method for microfluidic devices is proposed based on the ready-made microstructure of MCFs. Two functionalized microfluidic devices: serpentine micromixer and multi-droplet generator, are rapidly fabricated to demonstrate the advantages and potential of employing this new method. The whole proof-of-concept fabrication process can be completed in 8–10 min in a simple way; each procedure is repeatable with stable performance control of microfluidic devices; and the material cost can be as low as $0.01 for each device. The TPU-MCF and this novel method are expected to provide a new perspective and alternative in microfluidic community with particular requirements.

The application of aerogels in textiles is limited because their poor moisture permeability and mechanical properties. Aerogel flowers with down-like structures for clothing filling are prepared by laser cutting bacterial cellulose. The nanoporous structures of the aerogels maintained excellent heat preservation performance, and the large pores between flowers provided a channel for water vapor transmission. Moreover, the rigid silica coating on the nanofiber skeletons enabled them to rebound in a timely manner after being subjected to compression. The resulting vest exhibits better thermal insulation when it is 0.8 cm thinner than the down vest. This strategy should expand the potential applications of aerogel materials in the field of personal thermal management.
