Perylenedioic Acid-Derived Carbon Dots with Near 100% Quantum Yield in Aqueous Solution for Lasing and Lighting

Yupeng Liu,Bingzhe Wang,Yunsen Zhang,Jia Guo,Xiaoyi Wu,Defang Ouyang,Shi Chen,Yeqing Chen,Shuangpeng Wang,Guichuan Xing,Zikang Tang,Songnan Qu

Carbon dots (CDs) are a burgeoning star of luminescent carbon-based nanomaterials with emerging interest for various applications. Luminescence from the sp 2 -conjugated domains in the carbon cores is considered to be the intrinsic bandgap emission of CDs, whereas the relationship between them remains poorly understood. Simultaneously, the solvent relaxation of water molecules will quench the fluorescence of CDs, thus, obtaining strong luminescence from CDs aqueous solutions remains a great challenge. Herein, a facile one-step spatial-confined cross-condensation method that uses a heat-induced self-foaming process in ambient pressure has been developed to synthesize highly luminescent CDs with unprecedented photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) over 97.2% in water. The unique precursor-derived cross-arranged perylene skeleton in the cores hinders π–π stacking, while the hydrophobicity of the conjugated units mitigates solvent relaxation by water molecules, resulting in near-unity PLQY in aqueous solutions, enabling this to demonstrate the first optically pumped green lasing emission in the CDs aqueous solution. Moreover, a biomaterial-based white light emitting diode is fabricated using the CDs-stained silks as a fluorescence conversion cover to realize a high luminous efficiency of 60.7 lm W −1 with CIE color coordinate of (0.33, 0.35).

1.88 μm laser emission from Tm3+ doped fluorosilicate glass microspheres with excellent stability and high damage threshold

Xin Wang,Jibo Yu,Haiyan Zhao,Xiaosong Lu,Wenhao Li,Ke Tian,Gilberto Brambilla,Pengfei Wang

In this letter, high Q factor microsphere resonators with excellent stability and high damage threshold are fabricated from Tm 3+ doped fluorosilicate glasses using the traditional melt-quenching and fiber heating techniques. Intense 1.88 μm photoluminescence and single mode laser emission are obtained under the excitation of an 808 nm laser. The Q factor of the microsphere resonator is measured to be as high as 1.4 × 10 6 . Models for photoluminescence and lasing are proposed using spectroscopic data from the absorption and emission spectra . The excellent resistance to humidity and temperature are characterized from the transmittance spectra under different environmental conditions. Differential thermal analysis (DTA), measured in four different glass samples proves the high damage threshold. The proposed glass microsphere resonator laser can find application in optical sensors and micro lasers, especially in complex environments.

Mask-Free Patterned Perovskite Microcavity Arrays via Inkjet Printing Targeting Laser Emission

Zhewei Chen,Junjie Wu,Zheheng Song,Yatao Zou,Jingyun Hu,Ya Li,Yuhang Song,Yawen Li,Guilin Bai,Xiang Li,Yanan Zhu,Xinping Zhang,Xue-Dong Wang,Tao Song,Baoquan Sun

Perovskite materials are promising candidates for the implementation of electrically pumped lasers considering the enhanced performance of perovskite-based light-emitting diodes. Nonetheless, current methods of fabricating perovskite optical microcavities require complex patterning technologies to build suitable resonant cavities for perovskite laser emission, burdening the device structure design. To address this issue, we applied inkjet printing, a maskless patterning technique, to directly create spontaneous formations of polycrystalline perovskite microcavity arrays to explore their laser-emitting action. The substrate surface tension was tuned to modulate the perovskite crystallization process in combination with optimization of printing ink recipes. As a result, polycrystalline perovskite microcavity arrays were achieved, contributing to the laser emission at 528 nm with a lasing threshold of 1.37 mJ/cm2, while simultaneously achieving high-definition patterning of flexible display. These results clearly illustrate the efficiency of inkjet printing technology in the preparation of polycrystalline perovskite optical microcavities and promote the development of flexible laser arrayed displays, providing a facile process toward the realization of perovskite-cavity laser devices.

Laser emission from flash ignition of Zr/Al nanoparticles

Fan Yang,Xiaoli Kang,Jiangshan Luo,Laixi Sun,Handing Xia,Zao Yi,Yongjian Tang

We report the first laser emission from flash ignition of Zr/Al nanoparticles with the addition of strong oxidizer KClO4 using Nd: YAG as a laser medium. The mixture Zr/Al/Kp-45 (mass ratio = 33%Zr: 33%Al: 34%KClO4) has the highest brightness temperature Tb = 4615 K and the adiabatic flame temperature Tf = 4194 K with the duration of 20 ms. At 1064 nm we measured a maximum output energy of 702.5 mJ with the duration of nearly 10 ms by using only 100 mg mixture with an output coupler (transmission T = 10%). Further optimizing the concentration cavity and increasing the mixture content will yield much higher efficiency and output energy.

Stable, Efficient, and Scalable Multicolor Lasing from Colloidal Quantum Dots in Liquids

Xueyang Li,Jun Du,Yuxi Jia,Shu Hu,Gang Li,Boyu Zhang,Jingyi Zhu,Jingwei Guo,Kaifeng Wu

Liquid-state optical gain media are desired for high-power lasing applications due to their easier heat management than solid-state media, as well as for the emerging field of optofluidics. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are solution-processed materials that carry many attractive properties suitable for liquid lasing. To date, however, their lasing action is often achieved in close-packed films, as a high volume fraction of QDs is required for stimulated emission to outpace the ultrafast Auger decay of gain-active multiexciton states. Here we report liquid lasing from color-tunable (red, orange, and green) alloyed core/shell QDs with impeded Auger recombination. Lasing action is achieved by loading the QD-solutions into cavities under quasi-continuous-wave excitation. The light amplification behaviors of QD-solutions under ambient conditions are much more stable compared to those of both solid-state QD-films and dye solutions. Compatibility with aqueous solvents and ease of scalability are also demonstrated. An optimized optical power efficiency of 17.2% has been achieved. These results indicate that liquid lasing from colloidal QDs holds strong promise for real-world implementation.

Amplified Spontaneous Emission and Lasing from Zn-Processed AgIn5S8 Core/Shell Quantum Dots

Yang Mi,Anqiang Jiang,Lei Kong,Jun Wang,Heng Guo,Sheng-Nian Luo

I–III–VI ternary quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as favorable alternatives to the toxic II–VI QDs for optoelectronic and biological applications. However, their use as optical gain media for microlasers is still limited by a low fluorescence efficiency. Here, we demonstrate amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and lasing from colloidal QDs of Zn-processed AgIn5S8 (AIS) for the first time. The passivation treatment on the AIS QDs yields a 3.4-fold enhancement of fluorescence quantum efficiency and a 30% increase in the two-photon absorption cross section. ASE is achieved from the AIS/ZnS core/shell QD films under both one- and two-photon pumping with a threshold fluence of ∼84.5 μJ/cm2 and 3.1 mJ/cm2, respectively. These thresholds are comparable to the best optical gain performance of Cd based-QDs reported in the literature. Moreover, we demonstrate a facile whispering-gallery-mode microlaser of the core/shell QDs with a lasing threshold of ∼233 μJ/cm2. The passivated AIS QDs can be promising optical gain media for photonic applications.

Highly stable yellow-emitting fluorescent film based on graphene quantum dots for white laser-emitting devices

Pinyi He,Su Yang,Xinghua Liu,Yongzhen Yang,Jingxia Zheng,Xuguang Liu,Bingshe Xu

Green-emitting graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with a high crystallization degree were prepared by a two-step solvothermal method . Owing to the co-doping of nitrogen and oxygen, carbonyl and amide groups were introduced into GQDs. The quantum yield (QY) of GQD solution is up to 47.09%, which is higher than that of other GQDs synthesized by top-down methods. Since GQD solution exhibits concentration-dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties, green, yellow, and orange emissions were realized by adjusting GQD concentration. A high concentration (no less than 6.0 mg mL −1 ) GQD solution was mixed with KH-792 to form a yellow-emitting fluorescent film with an excellent fluorescence and thermal stability, which was used as color converters and combined with 405 nm laser diodes (LDs) to realize the devices with white laser-emitting. The Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate of the laser device is (0.34, 0.39), the correlated color temperature (CCT) is 5288 K, and the color rendering index (CRI) is 70. This work provides an advanced way for the development of laser fluorescent materials.

Laser-emission vibrational microscopy of microdroplet arrays for high-throughput screening of hyperlipidemia

Li Zhonghao,Cai Zhihan,Wang Yuhan,Liu Yuliang,Li Guifeng,Yang Xi,Deng Ming,Chen Yu-Cheng,Yang Jichun,Luo Yang,Gong Chaoyang,Zhu Tao

The mechanical properties of biological fluids serve as early indicators of disease, offering valuable insights into complex physiological and pathological processes. However, the existing technologies struggle to achieve high-throughput measurement, limiting their widespread applications in disease diagnosis. Here, we propose laser-emission vibrational microscopy of microdroplets for high-throughput measurement of the intrinsic mechanical properties of fluids. The microdroplet array supporting high Q-factor (10 4 ) whispering gallery modes (WGM) lasing was massively fabricated on a superhydrophobic surface with inkjet printing. Ultrasound was employed to actuate the mechanical vibrations of the microdroplets, and the vibration amplitude was quantified using time-resolved laser spectra. We found that the stimulus-response of the laser emission is strongly dependent on the liquid viscosity. Fast mapping of the microdroplets’ viscosities was achieved by stage scanning. High-throughput screening of hyperlipidemia disease was also demonstrated by performing over 2000 measurements within 25 min. Thanks to the small volume of the microdroplets, a single drop of blood can support over seven million measurements. The high-throughput ability and small sample consumption make it a promising tool for clinical diagnoses based on mechanical properties.
