Direct near-infrared laser ignition of CL-20 by introducing DATNBI as a bi-functional additive: Energetic photosensitizer and self-assembly stimulator

Ping Ye,Heng Ding,Bo Yang,Weimiao Wang,Xiaodong Li,Zhiqiang Qiao,Rui Li,Guangcheng Yang,Guoqing Lv

The ignition strategy of energetic materials using low-energy near-infrared (NIR) laser has garnered significant attention due to its enhanced safety and reliability. This study explores the use of a relatively photosensitive but mechanical insensitive energetic material, DATNBI, to facilitate the self-assembly of nano-CL-20 crystals into polycrystalline particles though solvothermal induction, yielding a rough structure conducive to NIR laser ignition. The findings demonstrate that by adjusting the content of DATNBI, it is possible to achieve micro-nano controllable spherical CL-20/DATNBI (C/D) particles, with CL-20 as the primary component and DATNBI as the auxiliary component. The incorporation of DATNBI and the rough surface structure enhance the light absorption of C/D particles in the NIR band. Additionally, the unique synergistic effect between CL-20 and DATNBI during thermal decomposition further promotes NIR laser ignition. As expected, the C/D particles achieved self-sustained combustion and exhibited excellent combustion performance under a 1064 nm laser, which is challenging to be achieved with raw CL-20 or raw DATNBI. Furthermore, the relatively insensitive DATNBI and spherical structure reduced the impact sensitivity of the C/D particles. This multifunctional material strategy, integrating energy, safety, environment-friendliness, and laser ignition performance, offers a novel approach for laser ignition of energetic materials.

Laser-Induced Ignition and Combustion Behavior of Individual Graphite Microparticles in a Micro-Combustor

Yue Wang,Minqi Zhang,Shuhang Chang,Shengji Li,Xuefeng Huang

Microscale combustion has potential application in a micro power generator. This paper studied the ignition and combustion behavior of individual graphite microparticles in a micro-combustor to explore the utilization of carbon-based fuels at the microscale system. The individual graphite microparticles inside the micro-combustor were ignited by a highly focused laser in an air flow with natural convection at atmospheric temperature and pressure. The results show that the ignition of graphite microparticles was heterogeneous. The particle diameter had a small weak effect on ignition delay time and threshold ignition energy. The micro-combustor wall heat losses had significant effects on the ignition and combustion. During combustion, flame instability, photophoresis, repetitive extinction and reignition were identified. The flame structure was asymmetric, and the fluctuation of flame front and radiation intensity showed combustion instability. Photophoretic force pushed the graphite away from the focal point and resulted in extinction. Owing to large wall heat loss, the flame quickly extinguished. However, the graphite was inductively reignited by laser. Keywords:microscale combustion;graphite;photophoresis;repetitive extinction;laser ignition

Synthesis of novel heterobimetallic MOFs and its effect on thermolysis and laser ignition of TKX-50

Chao Chen,Haijian Li,Jianhua Yi,Zhao Qin,Changjian Wang,Zhihua Sun,Yi Xu,Siyu Xu,Kangzhen Xu,Fengqi Zhao

Two novel heterobimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), Ba 4 Pb 4 (CH 3 CO 2 ) 8 [(CH 6 CO 2 ) 4 Pb](CH 3 CO 2 ) 4 (PbBa-MOFs) and Ba 2 Ni(CO 2 H) 6 (OH 2 ) 4 (NiBa-MOFs), were prepared via the solvothermal method, and their structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques. The pyrolysis behavior of the two MOFs and their catalytic performances on the dihydroxylammonium-5,5’-bistetrazole-1,1’-diolate (TKX-50) pyrolysis were studied by thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and thermogravimetric-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-mass spectrum (TG-FTIR-MS) methods. Compare with the pure TKX-50, the pyrolysis peak temperature and apparent activation energy ( E a ) of the TKX-50/PbBa-MOFs mixture were decreased by 3.2°C and 13.47 kJ‧mol −1 respectively. The E a of TKX-50/NiBa-MOFs was decreased by 9.35 kJ‧mol −1 . And the second pyrolysis peak disappeared in the DSC curves of TKX-50 after the addition of the two MOFs, due to that the products from MOFs pyrolysis suppress the chemical reaction pathway on the production of 5,5′-bis (2-hydroxytetrazole) (ABTOX) and accelerate the direct decomposition of 1,1’-bistetrazole diol (BTO). This resulted in the percentage of H 2 O decreased greatly and the percentage of NO/CH 2 O, CO 2 /N 2 O, NH 2+ /O• and NH 3 /OH increased during the pyrolysis of TKX-50. Finally, the relation between the pyrolysis and ignition characteristics was discussed and described. The two MOFs reduced the ignition delay time of the TKX-50 at the high power density region, and the flame becomes more luminous due to the formation of metal oxides and active free radical.

Catalytic activity of K2Ba[Ni(NO2)6] on the thermolysis and laser ignition of CL-20, FOX-7 and TKX-50

Chao Chen,Haijian Li,Zhao Qin,Changjian Wang,Yi Xu,Zhihua Sun,Siyu Xu,Jianhua Yi,Fengqi Zhao

Hexanitro complex K 2 Ba[Ni(NO 2 ) 6 ] was prepared via the co-precipitation method, and its composition and morphology were characterized by XRD , SEM , XPS and FT-IR techniques. The catalytic performances of K 2 Ba[Ni(NO 2 ) 6 ] for CL-20, FOX-7 and TKX-50 thermolysis were also discussed and studied by using DSC and TG-DTG-MS. After K 2 Ba[Ni(NO 2 ) 6 ] were mixed with CL-20, the activation energy ( E a ) of thermolysis reaction was increased, while the heat release was greatly improved, and the transformation from NH 3 to NO occurred. It is attributed to that the decomposition products of K 2 Ba[Ni(NO 2 ) 6 ] have strong effects on the oxidation of the radicals and the electrons transfer . Besides, the thermolysis E a of FOX-7 by addition of the K 2 Ba[Ni(NO 2 ) 6 ] was increased by 81.03 kJ mol −1 , and the heat release was greatly increased. In addition to that the two-step separate thermolysis processes of pure FOX-7 was almost replaced by a one-step exothermic reaction for the FOX-7/K 2 Ba[Ni(NO 2 ) 6 ] mixture, which was due to that Ni 2+ cations could effectively increase the activity of amino groups in the FOX-7 thermolysis process. Finally, K 2 Ba[Ni(NO 2 ) 6 ] scarcely has the thermolysis catalytic activity of TKX-50 owing to the influence of metal cations on the decomposition of the hydroxylamine . Furtherly, the characteristics of ignition and flame propagation on the three energetic mixtures were strongly correlated to their thermolysis pathway and mechanism. The comparative study on the effects of K 2 Ba[Ni(NO 2 ) 6 ] to the CL-20, FOX-7 and TKX-50 thermolysis and ignition showed that the hexanitro complex has great significance on promoting the heat release efficiency of solid propellants for future study.

Effects of hollow carbon nanospheres on combustion performance of Al/Fe2O3-based nanothermite sticks

Haifeng Yang,Chuanhao Xu,Shuaishuai Man,Hebin Bao,Yuting Xie,Xiaodong Li,Guangcheng Yang,Zhiqiang Qiao,Xueming Li

Effects of hollow carbon nanospheres on the combustion behavior of Al/Fe 2 O 3 -based thermite sticks are studied in this work. The results from laser ignition experiments confirm that the presence of hollow carbon nanospheres not only can reduce the ignition threshold because of the excellent laser energy absorption capacity, but also play a positive role in heightening the heat transfer efficiency by introducing pores and increasing heat-flow output during the combustion process. The video snapshots indicate that the combustion propagation stages, including ignition, acceleration, and steady combustion, all improved significantly with the suitable inclusion of hollow carbon nanospheres. The modified composites containing 4 wt% hollow carbon nanospheres exhibit a minimum ignition threshold (28 mJ), shorter acceleration duration (76 ms), higher combustion rate (10.10 cm/s) and steady combustion temperature (~2850 K). Furthermore, it exhibits a remarkable enhancement in energy release (537.36 J/g) and pressure output (0.91 Mpa), which are 1.67 and 1.34 times than that of pristine thermite sticks, respectively. Overall, this work demonstrates that the high porosity structure and heat-flow release of thermite sticks facilitate convective heat transfer and eventually improve the combustion behavior, which can provide some reference in the design and optimization of microstructure and composition in micro-energetic devices.

Regulation of stability and detonation performance: preparation of coordination compounds by using isomeric ligands

Tingwei Wang,Chao Zhang,Zujia Lu,Baolong Kuang,Zhiming Xie,Zhenxin Yi,Yan Li,Jianguo Zhang

In order to resolve the conflict between mechanical sensitivity and explosive performance, we utilized a retro-synthesis approach to design and synthesize the ligand 1H-imidazole-4-carbohydrazide (4-IMCA) and the complex Cu(4-IMCA)2(ClO4)2 (ECC-1). The structure of the product was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR and elemental analysis. The results showed that the physicochemical stability of ECC-1 was improved, including thermal stability (Td = 200 °C), mechanical sensitivity (IS = 3 J, FS = 7 N), and explosive performance. Moreover, laser ignition (P = 22 W, τ = 3 ms, E = 66 mJ) and lead plate damage tests showed that the detonation ability of ECC-1 was not compromised.

Energy release properties of amorphous boron and boron-based propellant primary combustion products

Daolun Liang,Jianzhong Liu,Jinwu Xiao,Jianfei Xi,Yang Wang,Yanwei Zhang,Junhu Zhou

The microstructure of amorphous boron and the primary combustion products of boron-based fuel-rich propellant (hereafter referred to as primary combustion products) was analyzed by scanning electron microscope . Composition analysis of the primary combustion products was carried out by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The energy release properties of amorphous boron and the primary combustion products were comparatively studied by laser ignition experimental system and thermogravimetry–differential scanning calorimetry. The primary combustion products contain B, C, Mg, Al, B 4 C, B 13 C 2 , BN, B 2 O 3 , NH 4 Cl, H 2 O, and so on. The energy release properties of primary combustion products are different from amorphous boron, significantly. The full-time spectral intensity of primary combustion products at a wavelength of 580   nm is ~2% lower than that of amorphous boron. The maximum spectral intensity of the former at full wave is ~5% higher than that of the latter. The ignition delay time of primary combustion products is ~150   ms shorter than that of amorphous boron, and the self-sustaining combustion time of the former is ~200   ms longer than that of the latter. The thermal oxidation process of amorphous boron involves water evaporation (weight loss) and boron oxidation (weight gain). The thermal oxidation process of primary combustion products involves two additional steps: NH 4 Cl decomposition (weight loss) and carbon oxidation (weight loss). CL-20 shows better combustion-supporting effect than KClO 4 in both the laser ignition experiments and the thermal oxidation experiments.

Effects of oxidizer and architecture on the thermochemical reactivity, laser ignition and combustion properties of nanothermite

Weimin Wang,Hui Li,Ming Zhang,Fengqi Zhao,Siyu Xu,Changjian Wang,Zhao Qin,Ting An,Kangzhen Xu

Energetic materials have been widely employed in both military and aerospace fields. Nanothermite has superior energy properties and better combustion performance compared with conventional organic energetic materials. In this paper, a novel nitrocellulose coated aluminum/copper ferrite (Al/CuFe 2 O 4 @NC) thermite composite with moderate energy release was assembled via electrospray. The intimate contact and uniform distribution between the fuel (Al) and oxidizer (CuFe 2 O 4 ) are achieved in Al/CuFe 2 O 4 @NC microparticles. The thermochemical reactivity, laser ignition and combustion performance of Al/CuFe 2 O 4 @NC were investigated and compared with those of Al/CuO@NC, Al/Fe 2 O 3 @NC and physical mixture of Al and CuFe 2 O 4 (PM. Al + CuFe 2 O 4 ). The thermite reaction of Al/CuFe 2 O 4 @NC composite is dominated by the solid–solid reaction, which is similar to that of Al/CuO@NC and Al/Fe 2 O 3 @NC. Al/CuFe 2 O 4 @NC composite show a short ignition delay time of ∼ 4.0 ms and a moderate combustion process. The burning rates of Al/CuFe 2 O 4 @NC can be adjusted in the range of ∼ 0.39–1.77 m·s −1 by varying the content of NC in composite. In addition, the pressurization characteristics and condensed combustion products of thermite composites with different oxidizers were also investigated. The results indicate that the oxidizer and architecture have considerable effects on the thermochemical reactivity, laser ignition and combustion performance of thermite composite. The large heat release and superior ignition and combustion performance can be achieved by electrospray technology, which is an effective approach for enhancing interfacial contact.

Effects of graphene organic iron nanocomplex on the pyrolysis and laser ignition performance of TKX-50

Ming Zhang,Fengqi Zhao,Hexin Liu,Na Li,Yifan Jiang,Zhen Zhang,Hui Li,Zhao Qin

Novel graphene iron tannate and graphene iron gallate nanocomplex (G-D-Fe and G-M-Fe) were designed, prepared and characterized by SEM , EDS , FTIR, RAMAN and XPS equipment. The catalytic property of the G-D-Fe and G-M-Fe for energetic TKX-50 was explored by DSC , kinetic calculation and laser ignition. The synthesized G-D-Fe and G-M-Fe present a positive impact on pyrolysis and ignition combustion of TKX-50, resulting in the significantly reduced decomposition temperature , activation energy ( E a ) and ignition delay time. After adding G-D-Fe (G-M-Fe), the first and second decomposition peak temperatures ( T FDP and T SDP ) of TKX-50 were decreased by 42.3 °C (43.9 °C) and 45.0 °C (49.6 °C), respectively. At the conversion degree of 0.2–0.8, the nonlinear kinetic data showed that after adding G-D-Fe and G-M-Fe, the E a of TKX-50 decreased from 163.5 to 141.3 and 145.4 kJ·mol −1 respectively. Additionally, after adding G-D-Ni and G-M-Ni, the laser ignition delay time of TKX-50 was reduced from 58 ms to 26 ms and 28 ms, respectively. The possible catalytic mechanism of preferred combustion catalyst G-D-Fe was disclosed by in-situ FTIR and gas-phase MS-FTIR analysis. The results are helpful to broaden the catalysts for pyrolysis and ignition combustion of TKX-50 and to disclose the catalytic mechanism.

Improvement of ignition and combustion performance of micro-aluminum particles by double-shell nickel-phosphorus alloy coating

Chao Wang,Xiangrui Zou,Shipan Yin,Junlong Wang,Hongyang Li,Ying Liu,Ningfei Wang,Baolu Shi

A novel ‘one-step’ in-situ electroless plating method capable of controlling phosphorus content was proposed for the fabrication of spherical core-shell energetic Al@Ni-P composites, aiming to prompt particle ignition by adding easy-to-ignite P element. In this experimental study, the preparation and characterization of Al@Ni-P composites, as well as the effect of coating an alloy shell on the Al particle surface were mainly addressed. The morphology and chemical composition heterogeneity demonstrated that the Al@Ni-P composites possessed comparatively dense double-shell structure. Thermal analysis showed that these composites could accelerate the rate of energy release by decreasing the apparent activation energy ( E a ) for particles oxidation. Laser ignition experiments were then conducted to examine the influence of Ni-P alloy on breaking through the barrier of ceramic phase Al 2 O 3 shell to improve the ignition and combustion performances. Moreover, the composites with surface P of 12.68 at.% exhibited extremely shorter laser ignition delay time of 86 ms under 1 atm O 2 atmosphere, reducing by 65.46% compared with that of raw Al particle (249 ms); and the pressurization rate reached 88.08 kPa/s under 10 atm O 2 atmosphere, which is approximately 11 times that of raw Al particle (8.09 kPa/s). These drastic improvements were attributed to the synergistic effects of double-shell structure and intermetallic compound exothermic reaction, which enhanced mass and heat transfer. These results demonstrate that Al@Ni-P composites have a promising future in solid composite propellants, which exhibit shorter ignition delay time and more vigorous combustion than raw Al. This strategy is expected to provide a new method for the construction of complex core-shell structural materials in other research fields.

ZIF-67/Ti3C2 MXene intercalated membrane with enhanced physical/chemical coupling light-to-heat conversion for laser ignition

Yingnan Yang,Haifeng Yang,Pengfei Tang,Xiaodong Li,Weimiao Wang,Guangcheng Yang

Laser induced high temperature pulse (HTP) generation has been widely used in some high-immediacy applications requiring dramatic temperature changes. Recent years researchers put interest in light-to-heat (include photothermal, light induced exothermic reaction and combination of both) materials to reduce the initiating energy of the laser ignition. However, the laser energy for realizing sufficient light-to-heat conversion is still high. MXene exhibits excellent light absorption, high light-to-heat conversion efficiency and has abundant metastable atoms which trend to undergo exothermic chemical reactions, but its incomplete oxidation affects its total heat release when the laser power is relatively high. Herein, we have prepared a ZIF-67/Ti 3 C 2 MXene intercalated membrane. It is found that porous ZIF-67 exhibits a synergistic effect on MXene and can significantly improve its physical/chemical coupled HTP by enhancing its light absorption and subsequent energy release during its oxidation. ε 2,4,6,8,10,12-(hexanitrohexaaza) cyclododecane (ε-CL-20) laser ignition experiments prove that ZIF-67/Ti 3 C 2 MXene intercalated membrane exhibits better ignition performance than pure MXene membrane by reducing both ignition threshold (151.2 mJ) and ignition delay (21 ms) at a low laser power intensity (59.7 W/cm 2 ). This work can provide an insight for the structural design of new light-to-heat membranes.

Two novel heterobimetallic metal-organic frameworks for the enhanced catalytic thermolysis and laser ignition of CL-20

C. Chen,H. Li,J. Yi,Z. Qin,C. Wang,Z. Sun,Y. Xu,S. Xu,F. Zhao

The study of multiple complex catalytic mechanisms is currently one of the great scientific issues for the application of high-energy solid propellants . Two novel heterobimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), Ba 4 Pb 4 (CH 3 CO 2 ) 8 [(CH 6 CO 2 ) 4 Pb](CH 3 CO 2 ) 4 (PbBa-MOF) and Ba 2 Ni(CO 2 H) 6 (OH 2 ) 4 (NiBa-MOF), were prepared via the solvothermal method, and their structures and composition were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques and N 2 adsorption/desorption experiment. The thermal decomposition characteristics of the two MOFs and their catalytic performances on the hexanitro hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) thermolysis were also studied by differential scanning calorimetr (DSC) and thermogravimetric-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-mass spectrum (TG-FTIR-MS) methods. The results showed that the NiBa-MOF presented a lower initial decomposition temperature than the PbBa-MOF, and the difference of the MOFs structures affected the starting point of thermal decomposition. Compared with the pure CL-20, the thermolysis peak temperature and apparent activation energy ( E a ) of the CL-20/PbBa-MOF mixture were decreased by 2.2 °C and 23.76 kJ‧mol −1 , respectively. The E a of CL-20/NiBa-MOF mixture was lower and 42.01 kJ‧mol −1 , indicating the better catalytic activity of NiBa-MOF. The thermolysis catalytic mechanisms were studied by analyzing the transformation of gas products during the pyrolysis of mixtures. The effect of these two MOFs on the CL-20 thermolysis is primarily owing to the strong attraction of metal cations to electronics, bimetallic synergistic catalysis, and the release of active free radicals. Furthermore, the laser ignition and flame propagation features showed that these two MOFs reduced the minimum ignition power density and ignition delay time of the CL-20, and the flame becomes brighter and more luminous. The influence of the two MOFs on the flame bright spot of CL-20 based mixtures was described.
