Titanium carbide (MXene) nanosheet is one of the most promising early fire-warning materials but limited by its relatively low thermopower. Doping modification is an effective method to improve its thermoelectric efficiency. Herein, a novel enhanced thermopower flame-retardant cotton fabric (HTE@CF) was fabricated by dip-coating of MXene, tannic acid (TA), and calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) via layer-by-layer assembly. It was found that HTE@CF exhibited high thermopower. When the temperature difference was 120 °C, its maximum thermoelectric voltage was as high as 3.72 mV, and the Seebeck coefficient was more than 39.4 μV/K, which was about 900% higher than those of MXene/TA@CF. HTE@CF displayed accurate temperature response and sensitive fire-warning performance. When being burned, it quickly triggered the fire-warning system within 3 s. More importantly, HTE@CF exhibited outstanding flame retardancy. Its limiting oxygen index (LOI) was as high as 35.3%, and its structure remained stable when exposed to the flame for 60 s. Furthermore, due to the high conductivity of MXene and CaCl 2 , HTE@CF showed good piezoresistive sensing capability. Our work provides new insights for the preparation of multifunctional and smart fire protection cotton fabrics.

Fabric-based wearable devices have gained significant attention as next-generation flexible electronics. However, traditional fabric sensors are limited by their dense woven structures, which hinder moisture-wicking and self-powered applications. There is an urgent need to develop more portable fabric sensors that combine efficient moisture-wicking with versatile sensing capabilities. In this work, a Janus-structured fabric sensor integrating moisture-wicking (unidirectional wetting) characteristics, superior ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) properties and strain sensing capabilities was developed. The Janus fabric sensor was fabricated through a two-step sequential modification process. First, a layer of conductive polypyrrole (PPy) was synthesized directly on the fabric surface through in situ polymerization. Second, asymmetric surface modification was achieved: an i-TE gel was spray-coated onto one side of the fabric, while 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate were applied to the opposite side to create a hydrophilic surface. The i-TE gel was prepared by incorporating 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide into fluorine-modified polyurethane. The Janus fabric sensor, with its asymmetric architecture, achieved effective moisture-wicking and liquid transport against gravity within 2 s. It exhibited sensitive motion-sensing performance with a gauge factor of 9.37 while simultaneously showing outstanding thermoelectric properties, characterized by a Seebeck coefficient of 4.84 mV K−1 and a power factor of 32.8 μW mK−2. These attributes enabled the monitoring of different human activity stages in a wearable self-powered mode. More significantly, the sensor's rapid response time of 0.2 s to flame exposure enabled common household textiles to serve as fire-warning systems. It holds a great promise as a platform for next-generation smart textiles.

Smart textiles with flame retardant and fire-warning functions have received more and more attention. However, improving the fire-warning response sensitivity and long-term responsiveness of the smart textiles is a top priority. In this research, flame retardant and fire-warning cotton fabrics were prepared by layer-by-layer assembly composite coating consisting of bio-based flame retardants composed of chitosan (CS) and phytic acid (PA) and carbon-based nanomaterials composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO). The PA-GO/CS-CNTs coated cotton fabric showed excellent flame retardancy with a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 31 %, and the coated fabrics could self-extinguish rapidly when the flame was removed. The fire hazard of the coated fabric was significantly reduced by reducing the 45.77 % of peak heat release rate , 29.69 % of total heat release and 81.9 % of total smoke production. The PA-GO/CS-CNTs coated cotton fabric showed ultra-fast fire warning response with the response time of 1.0 s. And the fire-warning response time of the coated cotton fabric could last longer than 600 s revealing it possessed the continuous fire warning response property. This research provides a new strategy to prepare the smart fireproof textiles with flame retardant and fire-warning functions to broaden its application in early fire-warning.

Multifunctional intelligent fireproof cotton fabrics are urgently demanded in the era of the Internet of Things. Herein, a novel high fire safety cotton fabric (denoted as MXene/CCS@CF) with temperature sensing, fire-warning, piezoresistivity, and Joule heating performance was developed by coating MXene nanosheet and carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS) via an eco-friendly layer-by-layer assembly method. Benefiting from the thermoelectric characteristic and high conductivity of MXene nanosheet, MXene/CCS@CF exhibited accurate wide-range temperature sensing performance. When being burned, it could repeatedly trigger the fire-warning system in less than 10 s. More importantly, MXene/CCS@CF showed outstanding flame retardancy because of the synergistic carbonization between MXene and CCS. The limiting oxygen index of MXene/CCS@CF was as high as 45.5%, and the char length was only 33 mm after the vertical burning test. Meanwhile, its peak heat release rate reduced more than 66%. Besides, the obtained fabric could detect a variety of human motions. Moreover, the controllable Joule heating performance enabled the fabric to be used in extreme cold weather. This work provides a facile approach to fabricating a next-generation high fire safety cotton fabric, showing promising applications in firefighting, home automation, and smart transportation.
