Bamboo and other biomass materials have become essential constituents in architecture and interior decoration owing to their outstanding environmental attributes. Nevertheless, their extensive utilization has given rise to substantial fire safety hazards, with toxic smoke frequently posing a greater lethality than heat. In this research, a fire warning coating with a mud brick structure was fabricated on the bamboo surface (AM@Bamboo) by combining positively charged flame retardant ammonium polyphosphate with the negatively charged groups on the MXene surface through a simple water evaporation-induced self-assembly method. The coating's abundant graded pores effectively suppressed the volatilization of smoke at high temperatures. Specifically, the concentrations of toxic NO 2 , NO, CO, and CO 2 gases released during the combustion of AM@Bamboo decreased notably. Among them, the decreases in peak value of CO and CO 2 were 21.2% and 61.1%, respectively. The limiting oxygen index value of AM@Bamboo rose to 36.06%, and the heat release rate was 166.51 kW/m 2 , which is 45.5% lower than that of bamboo. Simultaneously, MXene generated rutile type TiO 2 with semiconductor properties at high temperatures, endowing bamboo with stable cycling warning capabilities. It can trigger an alarm within 5 s in case of a fire and is capable of cycling warnings for 10 cycles. Consequently, AM@Bamboo can be reused multiple times after a fire, greatly reducing its carbon footprint. This achievement provides novel concepts and methods for enhancing the fire safety of bamboo products, and its potential applications can be extended to emerging fields such as intelligent sensing and monitoring.

The prospects of endowing the omnipresent hazardous substances with sensitive, safe, and stable life-like behaviors poses significant for the development of on–off switchable smart materials. Herewith, based on material-structural synergistic design, a multi-level responsiveness smart structures (VBGO) inspired by phospholipid biomolecules is self-assembled through asymmetric swelling and smart supramolecular nano-structures. Due to the outstanding sensitive of fire-warning nano-hybrid of functionalized cyclodextrin-graphene and highly stable substrate of vermiculite, the designed VBGO exhibits the high-sensitively fire alarm time (only 0.17 s) and super-along sustained fire alarm time (up to 249 s). Moreover, the VBGO displays significant increment in thermal stability and film-forming properties. Besides, given the asymmetrical and self-assembled smart structures, the VBGO exhibits the unique fast responses in their surrounding environments like fire, heat, light, humidity, and solvent vapor. Additionally, the on–off switchable mechanisms of fire-warning responsiveness, solvent-/humidity-/light-driven, shape memory and environmental awareness are presented systematically. This work introduces a sensitive, safe, and stable approach to designing multi-level responsive smart materials by modifying fire-warning bioinspired structures.

With the low carbon-driven development of modern intelligent, research towards novel materials is concentrating on the sustainable biomass-based advanced functional composites. The advanced functionalized wood toward sensing, optoelectronic devices, and energy conversion has been contributed to fast electron transport upon temperature or photo stimulus. Fast electron transport has been highly depended on the interfacial adhesion between the functional layer and wood matrix as well as graphitization degree during carbonization, which promote the electronic excitation and jumps. Here, we develop wood-based functional composites for advanced fire warning and energy conversion by loading metal–insulator transition (MIT) function factor (Ti 3 O 5 ) onto different woods via liquid crosslinkers, and systematically establish the interfacial adhesion-carbonization-electron transport processes and their relationships on the sensing and photothermal conversion properties. Firstly, balsa with high porosity (pore diameter ≈50 μm), low density (0.16 g/cm 3 ) and extractives content (total extractives content 16.27 %) facilitates crosslinker penetration due to the more holding space and lower nonpolar components. A favorable permeation can promote better interfacial adhesion, and the formation of a continuous conductive network of char-layers during carbonization. Secondly, the crosslinker (chitosan) with excellent adhesion (1 level) and char-forming ability (char residues is 21.7 %), facilitates the formation of a compact network of highly graphitized char-layers (I D /I G =0.81), which increases the electrical conductivity (highest conductivity 5.52 × 10 -4 S/m). We found that the most sensitive flame trigger time (0.86 s) for fire warning and the highest evaporation flux (1.63 kg m -2 h −1 ) for desalination can be obtained by using balsa which coupled the chitosan as well as the Ti 3 O 5 .
