Foams stabilized by nanoparticles (NPs) and surfactants have a great research potential in the development of environment-friendly firefighting foams. In the present study, foam dispersions, consisting of hydrophilic SiO 2 NPs, a hydrocarbon surfactant (CAD-40), and a fluorocarbon surfactant (FS-50), were prepared to investigate the effect of NPs on the thermal stability of firefighting foams. The interactions between NPs and surfactants and foaming ability of the mixed dispersions were investigated. Foam decay, drainage, and coarsening under different thermal radiation intensities were systematically investigated. Results indicated that as the NP concentration was increased, the viscosity of the foam dispersions increased rapidly, the conductivity and foaming ability decreased, and the surface activity decreased initially and then increased. Foam volume decay, drainage, and coarsening under different temperatures were delayed by the NPs. As the concentration of NPs increased, the effect became more obvious. This study could provide theoretical guidance for the application of NPs in firefighting foams.

Nanoparticles (NPs) have shown promising applications in developing the novel environmental-friendly firefighting foams. Hydrophilic silica NPs, siloxane surfactant (CoatOsil-77), and hydrocarbon surfactant (BS-12) were used to prepare mixed foam dispersions. The adsorption between surfactant molecules and NPs, and foamability of the mixed dispersions were analyzed. Thermal stability of foam was evaluated by using foam drainage, coarsening, and volume decay under thermal radiation. The strengthening mechanism of NPs on thermal stability of foam was analyzed. Results indicate that the intense interaction exists between NPs and surfactants. The presence of NPs with a concentration below 1 wt% leads to the deterioration of foam stability by accelerating foam drainage and coarsening, while a concentration of NPs above 1.5 wt% enhances foam stability. The foam coarsening, drainage, and foam volume decay were obviously delayed by NPs under thermal radiation. This research can give theoretical guidance for NP application in invention of fluorine-free firefighting foams.

Firefighting foam stability is a critical aspect in determining fire extinguishing efficiency. The stability and rheological properties of environmental firefighting foams are investigated in this work. The results show that increasing NaCMC polymer concentration decreases the equilibrium surface tension of CTAB/501W surfactants, while enhancing the viscosity and conductivity. And the yield strain and yield stress of the foam improve. However, when the NaCMC concentration is enhanced to 0.8 wt.%, the NaCMC concentration has less effect on the change in rheological characteristics. Slight NaCMC concentration addition enhances the foaming ability of CTAB/501W surfactant solutions, but further addition of NaCMC concentration decreases its foaming ability. Increasing NaCMC cocentration reduces the height decay of the foam produced by CTAB/501W surfactant solutions, retarding the bubble coarsening and liquid drainage process, and leading to foam stability enahncement, where the stability turning point occurs when NaCMC concentration is 0.5 wt.%. This is mainly attributed to the interaction between NaCMC polymer and CTAB molecule, and the increased viscosity.

Nanoparticles (NPs) have tremendous potential for improving the stability of environmentally friendly fluorine-free firefighting foams. However, many properties of nanoparticle-stabilized foams are still unclear before application. In the present study, hydrophilic SiO 2 NPs with different specific surface area (SSA), a nonionic silicone surfactant (CoatOsil-77), and a zwitterionic hydrocarbon surfactant (BS-12) were chosen for preparing mixed dispersions in water to investigate the effect of NP SSA on fluorine-free foams. The interaction between NPs and surfactants in water, foaming ability, and foam stability of the mixed dispersions were systematically investigated. Results indicate that the conductivity and foaming ability of the mixed dispersions first decreased and then increased, whereas the dynamic viscosity and surface tension were just the reverse with increasing NP SSA. The presence of NPs with SSA of 300 or 400 m 2 /g enhanced foam stability of the mixed dispersions by delaying foam drainage and coarsening. The optimal SSA for NPs enhancing foam stability is 300 m 2 /g. The results of this study could provide theoretical guidance for the application of NPs in the development of environmentally friendly fluorine-free firefighting foams. Graphical Abstract

Nano SiO 2 particles (NPs) combined with organosilane surfactants present a promising avenue for the development of stable fluorine-free firefighting foams. In this study, hydrophilic nano SiO 2 particles, non-ionic organosilane surfactant (SiCare2238), and amphoteric hydrocarbon surfactant (LAMC) were prepared as a mixed dispersion to investigate the interactions between nano particles and surfactants, foaming ability, and foam stability of the mixed dispersion. Results indicated that the surface activity, electrical conductivity, and foaming ability of the mixed dispersion decreased with increasing NPs concentration. The impact of NPs on foam stability depended on the filling and blocking mechanisms within the platform boundary of the formed liquid film. At NPs concentrations below 1.5%, strong electrostatic interactions among surfactant molecules resulted in the adsorption of surfactant molecules on the nano particle surface, preventing the formation of a network structure at the platform boundary, thereby reducing foam stability. At NPs concentrations above 1.5%, a significant number of NPs formed a network structure, filling and blocking the platform boundary, leading to delayed foam drainage, coarsening, and enhanced foam stability. This study provides theoretical guidance for the application of nano particles in fluorine-free.

While nanoparticles (NPs) are known to enhance the rheological properties of firefighting foams, the impact of different NPs types on the foam thermo-rheological properties has remained unclear. Short-chain fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon surfactants, and three types of NPs (SiO 2 , Al(OH) 3 , and β-Al 2 O 3 ) were used to prepare the foams. The interactions between NPs and surfactants, as well as their effects on foaming ability, foam stability, and foam thermo-rheological properties, were analyzed. Results indicated that NPs can form aggregates with surfactant molecules, thereby affecting surface tension, pH value, conductivity, zeta potential, viscoelasticity, and viscosity of foam dispersion. NPs can reduce the initial foam height of the foam dispersion from 340 mL to 250–260 mL, and significantly decrease the foaming ability. All three NPs could significantly delay foam drainage and enhance foam stability. At 45 °C, the NPs can decrease foam viscosity and viscoelasticity. The thixotropy of all foams at 45 °C showed different trends, and the foam with Al(OH) 3 NPs showed the best thixotropic structure recovery. Hysteresis behavior at 45 °C of the foam with Al(OH) 3 NPs decreased, but increased in the foam containing SiO 2 and β-Al 2 O 3 . In general, all three NPs could enhance the foam stability and foam thermo-rheological properties, with Al(OH) 3 demonstrating the strongest capability. This study can provide theoretical support for the development of firefighting foam stabilized by NPs.

The effect of carboxylated cellulose nanofiber (CCNF) on the firefighting foam stability and stabilization mechanism is investigated. The results show that equilibrium surface tension of CTAB/FC1157 solution decreases when CCNF concentration increases to 0.5 wt%, while CCNF has little effect on that of SDS/FC1157 solution. Besides, when CCNF concentration increases to 1.0 wt%, the foam initial drainage of SDS/FC1157 solution is delayed for about 3 min. Increasing CCNF concentration can slow down foam coarsening process and liquid drainage process of SDS/FC1157 and CTAB/FC1157 solutions, improving the foam stability. The foam stability enhancement of CTAB/FC1157-CCNF solution is due to the formation of bulk aggregates and the increase of viscosity. However, the foam stability enhancement of SDS/FC1157-CCNF solution may be caused by the increase of viscosity. CCNF significantly reduces the foaming ability of CTAB/FC1157 solution when CCNF concentration is >0.5 wt%. Nevertheless, the foaming ability of SDS/FC1157 solution decreases significantly when CCNF concentration reaches 3.0 wt%, and its foaming ability remains higher than CTAB/FC1157 solution. The foaming ability of SDS/FC1157-CCNF solution is mainly dominated by viscosity, while that of CTAB/FC1157-CCNF solution is dominated by viscosity and adsorption kinetics . Adding CCNF is expected to enhance the stability of firefighting foam and increase the efficiency of extinguishing fire.
