The effects of exogenous potassium salts on the thermal degradation of flue-cured tobacco were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), surface area/porosity measurements (SAPM), real-time fourier transform infrared (RT-FTIR), and thermogravimetric/Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR), respectively. TGA analysis showed that potassium salts accelerated tobacco’s degradation at around 150–350 °C, but improved the thermal stability of char residue at high temperature range. The porous texture analysis displayed that potassium salts reduced the pore volume and surface area of tobacco pyrolysis residues. Further study using RT-FTIR illustrated that there was a positive catalysis of potassium salts with C O, O H and C O bonds at different temperature ranges, but a protective effect was given to C H bond, C C bond and aromatic moieties except for the accelerating degradation of C H by the oxidation effect of KNO 3 . The evolution comparison of their gaseous products manifested that potassium salts cut down the emission of CO 2 , H 2 O, CO, aldehydes and alkanes, but enhanced the release of carbonyl compounds, anhydrides and alcohols at around 150–350 °C. Above 350 °C, the potassium salt-containing samples exhibited a gentle escape process for both the oxygen-bearing molecules (CO 2 , H 2 O and CO) and oxygen-free species (alkanes, methane and unsaturated compounds) in comparison with their quick emission for the virgin samples.

Nicotiana tabacum leaves are mainly used in the production of cigarettes and cigars all over the world, and a large amount of waste materials will be produced in the process. High-value scopoletin can be extracted and separated from waste materials, but there are some problems, such as low purity of products and inability of large-scale production. In this study, we established an efficient and stable method for producing high-purity scopoletin from waste tobacco by containing acetone reflux extracting with dynamic axial compression-high performance liquid chromatography (DAC-HPLC) separating. In particular, the extraction system makes the scopoletin fully extracted through continuous reflux, the DAC-HPLC system makes the high-purity scopoletin repeatedly obtained, and the DAC-HPLC system was first used for scopoletin. Finally, related to the waste tobacco power, the yield of scopoletin is 1.9%, and its HPLC purity is 99.94%. Additionally, a preparation method for the colorless needle crystal of scopoletin was established. Meanwhile, it has a strong antioxidant activity by testing the scavenging activity of the DPPH free radical and the Fe 3+ reducing power. And its spatial structure was identified by an X-ray diffractometer, which laid a good foundation for in-depth study of scopoletin. Graphical Abstract

Extraction of tobacco extracts from tobacco leaf scraps can promote the maximum utilization of tobacco waste and offer tobacco industries a formula to improve cigarette qualities and flavors. Tobacco extracts can be used as a reconstituted tobacco coating solution for reconstituted tobacco sheet (RTS)-based paper. Aroma components in the tobacco extracts can determine the fragrance style of the RTS. However, traditional extraction methods usually have many problems. Herein, the ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis was first applied to improve the aroma of tobacco extracts from tobacco leaf scraps. After ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis, the total aroma components content in tobacco extracts was increased by 5.0 times compared with that in aqueous extracts, and the total extraction yield was increased by 51.57%. Moreover, other compositions in tobacco extracts, including total sugar, nicotine, lignin, total phenols, formic acid, and acetic acid were also increased. This study provides a method to improve the aroma in the tobacco extracts and the quality of RTS. Graphical abstract

Plant leaf protein, especially soluble protein in tobacco leaves, has high nutritional and medicinal value, and has been gradually applied in the food field as an important source of food protein. In this study, tobacco protein was extracted and purified from discarded tobacco leaf by hollow fiber membrane integrated process. Hollow fiber ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and osmosis reverse (RO) membranes were prepared and used to extract and desalinate to obtain the high-purity tobacco protein. The derived wastewater was filtered by hollow fiber osmosis reverse (RO) membrane for harmless treatment. Experimental results showed that tobacco protein rejections by UF membrane and NF membrane could reach 87.9 and 98.5%, respectively. When diluted twelve times, the concentrated protein solution could be effectively desalinated by UF membrane with a low protein loss rate of 13.89%. All membranes suffered inevitable fouling. Using combined physical washing and chemical cleaning could effectively recover membrane water flux.

Cigar tobacco residues are a special air-cured tobacco material with increasing production in domestic. In this present study, the effect of glycerol addition on the pyrolysis characteristic, kinetic behavior, and release of pyrolytic products was investigated by using thermogravimetry coupled with online FTIR and self-built infrared tubular furnace. The thermal weight loss process of cigar tobacco could be divided into four stages, and the glycerol exhibited significant impact on the pyrolysis process. The stage II corresponding the decomposition of volatile components and hemicellulose shifted to the lower temperature accompanied with an increase of DTG max and weight loss at this stage. The T i , T f , and residues were decreased, while the CPI was increased as for the CT-G sample, indicating an increased reactivity and comprehensive pyrolysis performance. Gauss peak fitting was used to separate the pyrolysis process of different pseudocomponents in the tobacco biomass. Pyrolysis kinetic analysis based on Coats-Redfern method showed that the activation energy for the decomposition of each pseudocomponents decreased after the addition of glycerol. The online FTIR and MS analysis also reflected the interaction between glycerol and biomass through the release of pyrolytic gaseous products. GC–MS was further used to analyze the compositions of pyrolytic products in the trapped particulate matter under different heating rates. High heating rate was beneficial for the sufficient release of pyrolysis products and aroma compounds. The glycerol addition inhibited the generation of alkaloids, phenols, esters, ketones, acids, and heterocyclic compounds, indicating some effect may exist between cigar tobacco and glycerol.

Cigar is a kind of air-dried tobacco raw material with different physical structures and chemical compositions compared with flue-cured tobacco. The pyrolysis and thermal release characteristics of cigar tobacco are important for advancing their use in heat-not-burn cigarette. In this study, the thermal release behavior of cigar tobacco with different glycerol additions under heating conditions was analyzed by thermogravimetric technique as well as a self-built infrared rapid heating furnace combined with GC–MS analysis. The results showed that the thermal weight loss process of cigar tobacco could be divided into three stages. The addition of glycerol exhibited significant impact on pyrolysis process, especially in the stage II, accompanied by a decrease in T max , an increase in DTG max , and weight loss at this stage. Thermal release kinetic analysis of stage II by Coats-Redfern method showed an increased activation energy and pre-exponential factor. With the amount of glycerol addition increasing, the total aroma components released from cigar tobacco showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing at both heating rates, and reached the highest level when the glycerol addition amount was 20%. By means of multi-factor analysis of variance, the significance of heating rate and glycerol addition as well as the optimum combination between them that could maximize the release of various types of aroma components was determined. This study may be beneficial for the reasonable utilization of cigar tobacco in related products.

Water soluble sugars play an important role in the flavors and irritations of the cigarette sensory quality and the low content of water soluble sugars in the discarded tobacco leaves was a huge obstacle for their application. To make better use of the discarded tobacco leaves, a novel roasting method with sugar supplement was developed to enhance the sugar contents and total flavor compounds (TFCs) of tobaccos. Three main factors in the roasting process namely the reaction time, reaction temperature, and glucose supplement were optimized by single factor methodology. A proper condition was established as reaction time of 10 min, reaction temperature of 140 °C, and glucose supplement of 30%, which was further optimized by the response surface method through a three-level-three-variable Box–Behnken design. Moreover, the flavor compounds of the roasted cut tobacco extracts were analyzed and their effects in cigarettes were also determined. All these results suggested that this simple and easy method could be used to make better use of discarded tobacco leaves.

Cigar is a flavor-dependent cash crop. However, the key aroma compounds of tobacco leaves are less studied. In this study, we used molecular sensory science to explore the key aroma compounds of cigar tobacco leaves from three different origins in Yunnan, China. The results showed that a total of 33 aroma compounds were quantitatively analyzed in the three tobaccos, among which there were eight key aroma components in YXYY, eight in DHYY, and four in PEYY with odor activity value (OAV)≥1 and flavor dilution (FD)≥2. Through recombination and omission experiments, the key aroma actives were further identified as phytol, acetic acid, isovaleric acid, 3-methylpentanoic acid, and (E)-5-isopropyl-8-methylnona-6,8-dien-2-one in YXYY, styrene, (E)-5-isopropyl-8-methylnona-6,8-dien-2-one, irisone, and phytol in DHYY, and acetic acid, styrene, and phytol in PEYY. In conclusion the present study revealed the key aroma compounds and their differences in cigar tobacco from three different origins. It provides insights for a comprehensive exploration of the unique flavors of cigars.

In order to study the volatile and semivolatile components changes of cut tobacco in the drying process, the cut tobacco were determined by headspace-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-GC/MS). Principal component analysis (PCA) and similarity analysis were used to analyze the HS-GC/MS results. Based on the similarity, the drying conditions and drying mechanism have been studied. The results showed that the increase in water content would reduce the dying rate, and if the temperature increased, the dying rate increased. The preliminary study on the drying kinetics of the drying process shows that Henderson and Pabis model appeared to be the most suitable for describing the drying process of cut tobacco, and the drying activation energy is 111.9 kJ.

Introduction: Mold-derived contamination in cigar tobacco leaves causes severe economic losses and health risks due to mycotoxin production. This study aimed to identify early-warning biomarkers for mold and elucidate their interaction with fungal communities.Method: Gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) combined with high-throughput sequencing was employed to profile volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fungal communities during artificial molding. Results: A total of 72 VOCs were detected, with four compounds (2-methyl-1-butanol-M, 2-methyl-1-butanol-D, 2-propanone, and 1-penten-3-ol) identified as early-warning biomarkers through VIP > 1 and P < 0.05, showing 1.31.5-fold increases in early mold stages (MB3). Furthermore, fungal diversity sharply declined post-molding (OTUs reduced by 85.7%), with Aspergillus dominating (>99.45% abundance), and exhibiting strong positive correlations with 1-penten-3-ol (ρ = 0.61) and benzaldehyde-M (ρ = 0.67).Discussion: These findings provide actionable biomarkers for industrial mold prevention and insights into fungal-VOC interaction, with implications for perishable crop storage.

Introduction: This study focused on three kinds of cigar tobacco leaves (Yunxue 6, Yunxue 36, Yunxue 2) produced in Yunnan region, and through the systematic analysis of their physicochemical properties and aroma components of the smoke, the transformation pattern of aroma compounds and their origins during combustion were deeply investigated. Methods: In the experiments, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry (GC-O-MS) techniques were used to comprehensively qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the volatile constituents in the tobacco and its smoke, and combined with the conventional chemical composition detection, to reveal the physicochemical properties of Yunnan cigar tobacco and its influence mechanism on the smoke flavor. Results: Yunnan cigar tobacco exhibits distinct chemical characteristics with low sugar (0.12%–0.16%), high nitrogen (2.84%–4.56%) and alkaloid (2.32%–5.56%) contents, along with imbalanced nitrogen-alkali and potassium-chlorine ratios, affecting its combustion and sensory properties. Smoke analysis identified 144 volatile compounds, predominantly heterocyclic, aromatic and olefinic substances, with elevated pyrazines and pyridines contributing roasted, nutty and smoky notes. GC-O-MS analysis revealed 51 key aroma-active components, demonstrating greater complexity in core tobacco (YXYY) than wrapper tobacco (DHYY, PEYY).Discussion: Combustion transforms precursors (carotenoids, cedranes, phenylalanine) into characteristic aromas through pyrolysis and Maillard reactions, enhancing flavor complexity. This study first elucidates the chemical basis of Yunnan cigar’s characteristic aroma, providing theoretical support for quality improvement, process optimization and product differentiation in domestic cigar production. It fills research gaps in Chinese cigar aerochemistry and establishes a foundation for precision cultivation (e.g., chlorine regulation) and targeted fermentation processes to enhance cigar quality.

Tobacco is an agricultural commodity with great economic significance. Producers recognize that the flavor characteristics of filler tobacco clear-out (FTLs) affect the quality of cigar tobacco items. To identify the major volatile organic compounds (VOCs) responsible for differences in FTLs, E-nose, HS-SPME-GC–MS, and HS-GC-IMS were employed for multi-dimensional analysis of nine groups of FTLs at various fermentation stages. The E-nose results indicated a progressive increase in nitrogen-oxygen compounds during fermentation. Coupled with these findings, HS-SPME-GC–MS identified 56 VOCs, and HS-GC-IMS revealed 55 VOCs in the FTLs. Principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that FTLs from various fermentation stages of the Yunxue No 39 tobacco plant exhibit significant differences. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), along with the variable importance in projection (VIP) method for feature selection, pinpointed 12 VOCs as the essential unmistakable metabolites embroiled within the agrarian fermenting prepare of matured FTLs. During the fermentation process, these crucial metabolites are predominantly enriched in pathways including pyruvate metabolism, phenylalanine metabolism, as well as nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism. The study provides insights into the differences and diversity of FTLs at agricultural fermentation stages. It offers valuable information for optimizing the quality of agricultural fermentation and guiding the directional fermentation of tobacco leaves.
