Facile construction of polypyrrole microencapsulated γ-Fe2O3 for simultaneously enhancing the flame retardancy and smoke toxicity suppression of intumescent flame-retardant epoxy resins

Miaotian Long,Zerui Zhang,Long Yan,Liang Yi

For effectively strengthening the comprehensive properties of intumescent flame-retardant epoxy resins (EPs), a microencapsulating γ-Fe 2 O 3 by polypyrrole (PPy) named PPy-Fe 2 O 3 was synthesized and used as a synergist to simultaneously enhance the flame retardancy, smoke toxicity suppression and mechanical strength of EP composites containing diaminodiphenylmethane modified ammonium polyphosphate (DDP). The results demonstrate that the mixture of PPy-Fe 2 O 3 and DDP exhibits a surprising synergistic effect on strengthening the comprehensive properties of EP composites. Specifically, EP composite containing 0.2 wt% PPy-Fe 2 O 3 and 9.8 wt% DDP achieves the UL94 V-0 rating with a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 35.5%, while 10 wt% DDP only imparts a UL94 V-1 rating and a LOI value of 34.0% to EP. Furthermore, 0.2 wt% PPy-Fe 2 O 3 shows a 11.0% reduction in peak smoke production rate and a 12.3% reduction in peak heat release rate of the EP/DDP system. The enhanced fire security of EP/DDP/PPy-Fe 2 O 3 is attributed to the formation of more phosphorus-rich structures retained in the char, thus reducing the release of harmful gases including NH 3 , CO, and CO 2 , and generating more incombustible gases including H 2 O to weaken burning intensity. Meanwhile, the satisfactory compatibility of PPy-Fe 2 O 3 with epoxy matrix imparts a superior mechanical strength to EP composites.

MoS2 supported on acid activated kaolinite used in the kaolinite-epoxy resin composites for suppressing smoke toxicity and degradation

Wufei Tang,Haizhou Fan,Fang Liu,Yunhui Liao,Qi Xiao,Jiao Yan,Sheng Zhang,Xiaoyu Gu

By growing molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) on the surface of acidified kaolinite (A-Kaol) to obtain MoS 2 @A-Kaol compounds, which effectively suppressed the toxic smoke and soot, enhanced thermal stability and ageing resistance of the epoxy resin (EP). In the cone calorimetry test, the total smoke production (TSP) reached 3917.6 m 2 ; while the TSP value decreased to 2575.5 m 2 after adding 3 wt% MoS 2 @A-Kaol; MoS 2 @A-Kaol slowed down the mass loss and promoted the char residue of EP composite increased to 11.3%. In TGA test, the temperature of 50% mass loss (T 50% ) was postponed from 388 °C to 414 °C and the residue increased to 8.7% after adding 3 wt% MoS 2 @A-Kaol, indicating the thermal degradation of the EP was postponed and its thermal stability was improved. The released smoke and soot were filtrated by a non-woven PP fabric, which documented MoS 2 @A-Kaol reduced the toxic aromatic volatiles. The tensile and impact strength of the EP was mostly kept by 3 wt% MoS 2 @A-Kaol after UV ageing for 72 h. Based on all the results, the smoke suppression and anti-ageing mechanism was disclosed. This work provided a feasible solution to improve the comprehensive properties of EP with low amount of filler.

Structural design of flame-retardant phosphatized unsaturated polyester resin

Junzhi Ma,Dong Wang,Shaohai Fu

To improve flame-retardant properties of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR), two phosphorus-containing vinyl monomers with different chemical structures were synthesized to replace styrene molecules and then copolymerized with UPR oligomers to prepare flame-retardant phosphatized UPRs. Curing behavior of phosphatized UPRs was investigated by DSC non-isothermal curing curves, deducing the best curing conditions. Cone calorimeter results demonstrated the obvious reduction of heat release rate and smoke production rate by comparing phosphatized UPRs with flammable UPR. TG-IR-MS coupling technique was utilized to reveal thermal degradation and pyrolytic volatiles including aromatic compounds, hydrocarbons, CO, PO 4 ˙, and so forth, providing more information of smoke toxicity and the gas phase flame- retardant mechanism of phosphatized UPRs. Moreover, the yield, compactness and graphitic degree of char residues of phosphatized UPRs were increased, strengthening the barrier effect to inhibit the permeation of combustion heat and the effusion of pyrolytic volatiles in the condensed phase.

Barrier function of graphene for suppressing the smoke toxicity of polymer/black phosphorous nanocomposites with mechanism change

Wei Cai,Zhaoxin Li,Xiaowei Mu,Lingxin He,Xia Zhou,Wenwen Guo,Lei Song,Yuan Hu

Recently, black phosphorous (BP) nanosheets as an emerging nanomaterial have presented significant fire safety improvement in polymer nanocomposites . However, as elemental phosphorus, fire safety improvement effect of BP nanosheets on polymer composites builds on the conversion of gaseous pyrolysis products into smoke particles, which inevitably promotes the formation and release of smoke particles. From the perspective of overall fire safety improvement, it is vital to simultaneously suppress the heat release and smoke production of polymer/BP composites. Herein, melamine-mediated graphene/black phosphorous nanohybrids (GNS/MA/BP) were fabricated through electrostatic-driving self-assembly process and introduced into polyether thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). During combustion, the barrier function provided by thermally stable layered structure of graphene (GNS) enables more pyrolysis products of BP nanosheets to be kept within condensed phase and react with polymer matrix. Compared to pure TPU, the incorporated hierarchical nanostructure (GNS/MA/BP-2) decreases PHRR, THR, and total CO 2 release of TPU composite by 54.7%, 23.5%, and 32.5%, respectively. Beside, in contrast to TPU-BP composite, the release rate of toxic smoke and CO gas of TPU-GNS/MA/BP-2 composite are reduced by 46.7% and 49.4%. With barrier function of graphene, the heat and smoke release behavior of polymer/BP nanocomposites is effectively suppressed.

In-situ formation of macromolecule P/N/Si flame retardant for epoxy resin with low smoke toxicity and excellent flame-retardancy

Huaiyin Liu,Penglun Zheng,Junwei Li,Jichang Sun,Rui Wang,Haihan Zhao,Jing Wu,Yun Zheng,Quanyi Liu

Epoxy resins (EP) have great chemical and physical properties, but their poor flame retardant properties have prevented their widespread use. To improve the flame retardancy properties of EP, an active P/N/Si flame retardant (KDC) containing a double bond was successfully synthesized in this work by using a typical aldehyde amine condensation reaction. This flame retardant not only can form a large molecule flame retardant in situ by double bond reaction and increase the tightness with EP matrix, but also has the advantage of P/N/Si three elements synergistic flame retardant, and at the same time play the flame retardant performance of each element, can achieve excellent flame retardant performance and low smoke and toxicity with low addition amount. Subsequently, the performance of the flame retardants was tested. When 7 wt% of KDC was added, the pHRR and TSR of the EP composites were reduced by 51.7% and 29.8%, respectively. More importantly, the addition of KDC inhibited the release of toxic fuels and smoke from EP, where the TSP values of EP/3-KDC were 18.14% below those of neat EP and increased the residual amount of charcoal, while the inhibition of CO and CO 2 release was particularly pronounced with the presence of KDC.

Tri-phase flame retardant system towards advanced energy-saving building materials with highly efficient fire and smoke toxicity reductions

Yao Yuan,Lulu Xu,Wei Wang

The extensive usage of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) as an energy-saving building materials in construction has raised concerns about fire risks and toxic hazards. To address these challenges, a melamine-derived polyol (MADP) was synthesized using the Mannich reaction, resulting in inherently flame-retardant RPUF materials with the introduction of flame-retardant functional groups. Furthermore, a novel MoS 2 -Cu 2 O nanohybrid was prepared and employed to enhance flame retardancy and suppress smoke toxicity in RPUF through a cooperative effect with expandable graphite (EG). The resulting M-RPUF/EG/MoS 2 -Cu 2 O nanocomposite exhibited remarkable fire safety, as evidenced by significant reductions in peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), total smoke production (TSP), and peak carbon monoxide (CO) release, amounting to 76.9 %, 64 %, 82 %, and 99 % respectively, compared to pristine RPUF. Furthermore, the nanocomposite effectively addressed interfacial defects and significantly enhanced the mechanical property and thermal stability. The significant improvement in fire safety is mainly ascribed to the catalytic charring effect of MADP and EG, as well as the catalytic oxidation of MoS 2 -Cu 2 O nanohybrids, resulting in the formation of a thermally stable protective layer in the condensed phase. Based on these results, the integration of the tri-phase flame retardant system holds great potential for advancing the development of fire-safe polyurethane materials.

Design of Hierarchically Tailored Hybrids Based on Nickle Nanocrystal-Decorated Manganese Dioxides for Enhanced Fire Safety of Epoxy Resin

Yao Yuan,Chen Liang,Anthony Chun Yin Yuen,Lulu Xu,Bin Yu,Chengfei Cao,Wei Wang

A novel and hierarchical hybrid composite (MnO2@CHS@SA@Ni) was synthesized utilizing manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanosheets as the core structure, self-assembly chitosan (CHS), sodium alginate (SA) and nickel species (Ni) as surface layers, and it was further incorporated into an epoxy matrix for achieving fire hazard suppression via surface self-assembly technology. Herein, the resultant hybrid epoxy composite possessed an exceptional nano-barrier and synergistic charring effect to aid the formation of a compact layered structure that enhanced its fire-resistive effectiveness. As a result, the addition of only 2 wt% MnO2@CHS@SA@Ni hybrids led to a dramatic reduction in the peak heat release rate and total heat release values (by ca. 33% and 27.8%) of the epoxy matrix. Notably, the peak smoke production rate and total smoke production values of EP/MnO2@CHS@SA@Ni 2% were decreased by ca. 16.9 and 38.4% compared to the corresponding data of pristine EP. This was accompanied by the suppression of toxic CO, NO release and the diffusion of thermal pyrolysis gases during combustion through TG-IR results. Overall, a significant fire-testing outcome of the proposed hierarchical structure was proven to be effective for epoxy composites in terms of flammability, smoke and toxicity reductions, optimizing their prospects in other polymeric materials in the respective fields.Keywords:polymer-matrix composites;surface treatments;flame retardancy;smoke toxicity
