Ecological and environmental damage caused by oil spillage has attracted great attention. Used cigarette filters (CF) have also caused negative environmental consequences. Converting CF to economical materials is a feasible way to address these problems. In this study, we demonstrate a simple method for production of a highly hydrophobic absorbent from CF. CF was modified by using different volume ratios of octadecyltrichlorosilane and methyltrimethoxysilane. When the volume ratio was 3:2, the modified CF had the high water contact angle of 155°. It could selectively and completely absorb silicone oil from an oil-water mixture and showed a good absorption capacity of 38.3g/g. The absorbed oil was readily and rapidly recovered by simple mechanical squeezing, and it could be reused immediately without any additional treatments. The as-obtained superhydrophobic modified CF retained an absorption capacity of 80% for pump oil and 82% for silicone oil after 10 cycles. The modified CF showed good elasticity in the test of repeated use. The present study provides novel design of a functional material for development of hydrophobic absorbents from used CF via a facile method toward oil spillage cleanup, as well as a new recycling method of CF to alleviate environmental impacts. Keywords:cigarette filter;superhydrophobic;highly selective;absorbent;oil spillage

As a type of solid waste, the used cigarette filters (UCF) were utilized to produce ester-rich bio-oil via a cleaner production process, namely, microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP). The pyrolysis efficiency was significantly enhanced owing to the high heating rate under MAP conditions with assistance of microwave absorber silicon carbide (SiC) in reactor and adding methanol into N 2 carrier gas. Compared with the traditional tubular muffle furnace heating method yielding 0% of bio-oil, the MAP heating method obtained 29.17% of bio-oil from UCF. The bio-oil yield from UCF increased from 29.17% to 46.71% due to the introduction of methanol. Results of the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry showed that esters were the main components in the bio-oils (over 40%), especially of methyl acetate (over 12%). The aromatic compounds of phenols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were also produced from the MAP of UCF. The bio-char from MAP of UCF exhibited the mesoporous property (e.g., over 500 m 2 /g of specific surface area). It is expected to produce over 350000 metric tons ester-rich bio-oil if the proposed technology can be scaled up globally. It will be a preeminent contribution for the conversion of UCF to the cleaner production and our environments.

The worsening of the freshwater crisis undoubtedly poses great challenges to the normal production and life of human beings. Developing multifunctional materials that are capable of both atmospheric water harvesting and undrinkable water purification is highly desirable for freshwater production but is rare. In this study, a super-hygroscopic photothermal material (WCBs@SA/MNPs/MOFs) composed of environmentally polluting waste cigarette butts (WCBs), sodium alginate (SA), metal–organic framework-Zr (MOF-801) and melanin nanoparticles (MNPs) was successfully fabricated. Benefiting from the simultaneous loading of moisture-absorbing MOF-801 and photothermal MNPs into the porous structure of WCBs, freshwater production consisting of efficient atmospheric water harvesting (daily water production of ∼ 1.41 L kg −1 at low relative humidity of 20 % and 5.42 L kg −1 at higher relative humidity of 80 %, respectively) and eco-friendly solar-driven undrinkable water purification (water evaporation rate ∼ 2.72 kg m -2 h −1 , 1 kW m −2 ) can be realized concurrently. We believe this research not only mitigates environmental pollution caused by discarded cigarette butts and enhances their economic value, but also expands the options for freshwater production with multiple positive implications.

The development of advanced carbon materials as metal-free catalysts holds great importance for mercury catalyst replacement in acetylene hydrochlorination. In this paper, we transform discarded cigarette butts into a porous nitrogen-doped carbon material (N-CB-800), exhibiting characteristics of high specific surface area, large N doping amount, defective structure and strong C2H2 chemical adsorption ability. These unique features endow N-CB-800 with a high catalytic performance with an acetylene conversion of 71.8% at 220 °C and an acetylene space velocity of 100 h−1, making it one of the most active metal-free catalysts. This work will be of great value for the recycling of living waste and provide meaningful guidance for the development of non-mercury catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination.
