Preparation and sintering behavior of micron-sized spherical-like sliver particles based on seed-mediated method

Senpei Xie,Weixuan Chen,Minghan Yu,Guofeng Lu,Kang Li,Weiwei Zhao

Tunneling oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) solar cells are conventionally sintered at lower temperatures using the laser enhanced contact optimization (LECO) process, which requires higher sintering activity of silver particles. In this study, spherical-like silver particles were synthesized based on a seed-mediated method using ascorbic acid to reduce silver nitrate. In addition, by mediated growth after the seed modification treatment, pores are formed inside the silver particles and the grain size is reduced. The pore and grain sizes of silver particles were characterized and analyzed using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The creation of defects in modified seed-mediated diffusive growth leads to the appearance of pore structures within the particles. Thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA) showed that the contraction rate of silver particles increased from 12.35 % to 13.61 % in the presence of internal pores, indicating high sintering activity. The modified seed-mediated silver particles were formulated into silver pastes, exhibiting a lower line resistivity of 2.342 μΩ·cm.

Combustion synthesis of Si3N4 powders with high sintering activity under low nitrogen pressures

Jiale Zhang,Jianjun Chen,Jinyu Guo,Hao Chen,Longbo Xue,Chenyu Li

In this study, silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) powders with high α-phase content and rod-like crystal morphologies were synthesized via self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) in a low-pressure nitrogen atmosphere (0.2 MPa), using silicon and Si 3 N 4 powders as reactants, with magnesium powder serving as an igniter. The influence of different ratios of silicon to silicon nitride on the phase composition, crystal morphology, and sintering activity of the synthesized Si 3 N 4 powders was systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that controlling the silicon-to-silicon nitride ratio under low-pressure conditions significantly affects the formation of α-phase Si 3 N 4 and the resulting microstructure of the powders. A low-pressure nitrogen atmosphere was adopted based on kinetic and thermodynamic analyses, providing a feasible environment for SHS. Notably, in situ formation of magnesium nitride (MgSiN 2 ) during the reaction not only acted as an effective sintering aid but also improved the thermal conductivity of the resulting Si 3 N 4 ceramic. The powder produced from a reaction using a raw material composition of 65% Si minimizes both silicon infiltration and melting to the greatest extent, and consequently, the sintered silicon nitride ceramics exhibit the highest thermal conductivity. The low-pressure environment effectively moderated the reaction rate and temperature, promoting the formation of fine α-phase Si 3 N 4 particles with rod-like morphologies. This innovative method offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach for producing high-quality Si 3 N 4 powders with high sintering activity.

A novel spray co-precipitation method to prepare nanocrystalline Y2O3 powders for transparent ceramics

Li Zheng,Zhang Le,Zhou Tianyuan,Wang Lixi,Wong Ching Ping,Yang Hao,Zhang Qitu

A novel spray co-precipitation method was adopted to synthesize well dispersed nanocrystalline Y 2 O 3 powders for transparent ceramics. Several analytic techniques such as XRD, SEM, BET and UV–Vis–NIR spectrophotometer were used to determine the properties of coprecipitated powders, and the microstructure and optical properties of as-fabricated ceramics. The influences of the aging time on powders and ceramics were systematically investigated. Precursors were completely reached to yield the Y 2 O 3 phase after being calcined at 1250 °C in air. The calcined Y 2 O 3 powders exhibited an approximately spherical morphology with narrow size distribution and weak agglomeration, with mean particle size of ~140 nm. The co-precipitated nanopowders with an aging time of 12 h exhibited the best sintering activity due to the low agglomeration, and the in-line transmittance of Y 2 O 3 ceramic sintered at 1800 °C for 8 h in vacuum reached to 77.2% at 1064 nm (1 mm thickness).

Synthesis of BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-δ nano-powders by aqueous gel-casting for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells

Donggang Wang,Zhenhao Zhang,Tao Song,Haibin Sun,Jiao Li,Xue Guo,Qiangqiang Hu,Yurun Feng,Shikai Zhao

For the sake of enhance the sinter ability and electrical conductivity of BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZCY) electrolytes, a modified aqueous gel-casting method was applied to synthesize high sintering active and high conductive BZCY nano-powders. The new approach makes it easy to obtain pure perovskite. The highly sintering active purity-phase of BZCY nano-powder (particle size of 50∼100 nm) was obtained by calcining at 1100°C for 2 h. Nano-powders effectively reduce the sintering densification temperature and successfully prepare BZCY electrolyte with relative density > 96 % at 1450°C, and promote grain growth with an average grain size of 2.36 μm. Benefiting from this, improved electrical conductivities (e.g., 12.4×10 −3 S cm −1 at 700°C, in wet air) are obtained. The NiO-BZCY/BZCY/LSCF-BZCY anode-supporting single cell shows a peak power density of 0.75 W cm −2 at 700°C while taking ambient air as oxidants and wet H 2 (∼3 vol.% H 2 O) as fuels.

Synthesis, characterization and application of submicron ZrSiO4 powder via sol-gel-microemulsion-hydrothermal method

Chao Wang,Qikun Wang,Kun Liu,Jianlei Liu,Yongqing Wang,Yulong Yang,Qibing Chang

High-performance submicron ZrSiO 4 powder is prepared by a sol-gel-microemulsion-hydrothermal method (S-G-M-H). In this method, the transformation from sol to gel is constrained in the droplets of the microemulsion and accelerated by the hydrothermal process. The interface change of sol/oil to gel/oil makes the emulsion automatic demulsificate without demulsifiers, which means that the organic solvents can be recycled. The preparation process is low-cost and environmentally friendly. The results show that the synthesized ZrSiO 4 powder owns the optimized median diameter (D50) of 0.67 μm under the optimized preparation condition of hydrothermal treatment at 150 °C for 7 h. The ZrSiO 4 particles are the agglomeration of the primary particles with a size of about 100 nm. As an opacifier , 15 wt% submicron ZrSiO 4 powder added give a whiteness value of 85 to the opaque glaze, which is significantly better than commercial ZrSiO 4 powder with the same amount added. Meanwhile, the obtained submicron powder has excellent sintering activity. After sintered at 1300 °C for 2 h, the ZrSiO 4 pellets has the density of 4.32 g cm −3 and the porosity of 0.31%.

Synergistic surface modification of silver powder: Mechanisms for tapped density enhancement and low-temperature sintering

Wei Wang,Jia Liu,Yapeng Jia,Jun Yin,Lianzhou Zhang,Xuefei Zhou,Junpeng Li,Jianqiang Wang,Guoping Yang,Wenyan Zhang

Silver powder, as a pivotal material in electronics and new energy applications, critically depends on its tapped density and sintering activity. This study systematically optimizes the physical properties and sintering performance of micron silver powder through a synergistic surface modification strategy integrating jet milling classification and high-speed shear shaping. Results demonstrate that the modified silver powder exhibits a 40–45 % enhancement in tapped density (5.91 g/cm 3 ), a 50–56 % increase in apparent density (4.01 g/cm 3 ), a narrowed particle size distribution span (reduced from 2.93 to 0.52), and significantly improved flowability (angle of repose: 28.97°). The conductive silver paste formulated with modified powder achieves optimized rheological properties, including a 41.8 % higher 17-s recovery rate (84.5 %) and a 79.08 % reduction in static viscosity. Sintering experiments revealed that the modified silver powder achieved a maximum reduction in sintering temperature of 100 °C, with a relative density exceeding 97.3 % at 650 °C, with grain boundary diffusion and defect density modulation identified as the core mechanisms for densification. This work elucidates the synergistic regulatory mechanisms of surface modification on the sintering behavior of silver powders, aligning with the principles of tapped density enhancement and low-temperature sintering.
