Textiles with passive cooling capabilities offer an efficient way to optimize personal thermal regulation. However, the simultaneous achievement of passive cooling, durability, and comfort in a single fabric poses a significant challenge. Herein, an ingenious cotton fabric that can be fabricated through a facile dip-dry technique is proposed. Carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals are grafted onto the fiber surfaces, and then covalently linked with hydroxylated boron nitride nanosheets to form a nanostructured coating. The resulting fabric demonstrates a remarkable enhancement of 69 % in its thermal conductivity and an impressive 56 % rise in in-plane thermal diffusivity, when compared to the pristine cotton fabric. This has the potential to raise the comfort setpoint temperature of indoor cooling equipment by 2.1 °C, thereby reducing cooling energy consumption by 22.2 %, while significantly enhancing the perceived cooling effect on the skin. Under the direct sunlight, the nanostructured fabric cools the skin by 1.21 °C below ambient temperature, preventing an excessive increase of 8.2 °C in skin temperature. Moreover, the resulting fabric maintains comparable levels of comfort and wearability as that of the original cotton fabric. This study presents an innovative strategy towards the development of passive cooling textiles.

Summary In this work, diatomite (DM) was calcined at 400°C to obtain the pure surface and pores (DM-1); then, the three kinds of shape-stable composite phase change materials (ss-CPCMs) of CaCl 2 ·6H 2 O (CCH)/DM-1, CH 3 COONa·3H 2 O (SAT)/DM-1, and Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O (SSD)/DM-1 were prepared by impregnation method. The hydrated salts were uniformly adsorbed on the surfaces and into the pores of DM-1 by capillary action and surface tension. The addition of nucleating agent effectively reduced the supercooling degrees of hydrated salts, and the heterogeneous nucleation mechanism was employed to explain the supercooling suppression. The results showed that the supercooling degrees of the three hydrated salt ss-CPCMs with optimal nucleating agent were less than or equal to 0.6°C. Moreover, the thermal conductivities of ss-CPCMs were significantly improved by adding graphite, and the addition of 10 wt% graphite could increase the thermal conductivity of hydrated salt ss-CPCMs by at least 70%. The package capacity of CCH, SAT, and SSD in three ss-CPCMs with appropriate contents of nucleating agent and graphite was 58.1, 56.1, and 56.3 wt%, respectively. The DSC results showed that the phase change temperatures of the three ss-CPCMs were approximately 28.8 to 57.8°C, and the latent heat was approximately 108.7 to 149.4 J/g. The XRD and FT-IR results exhibited that the three ss-CPCMs indicated understanding chemical compatibility. In addition, the results of 200 melt-solidification cycles demonstrated that the ss-CPCMs had excellent thermal cycle reliability. Thus, the hydrated salt/DM-1 ss-CPCMs showed great potential as heat storage materials for various heat storage applications.

Latent thermal energy storage plays an indispensable role in exhaust heat recycles in various industries which is useful for reducing energy consumption . Different phase change temperatures and high thermal conductivities of composite phase change materials were required for various domains. In the present work, Alum as phase change material and Ala as melting point modifier, a series of phase change materials with adjustable melting temperatures were prepared by physical mixing method. Moreover, EG as porous skeleton and thermal conductive enhancer, composite with high thermal conductivity was obtained with simple physical adsorption method. The XRD and SEM were applied to characterize the phase crystal and microstructure of the composite phase change material. DSC results revealed that phase change temperatures of Alum-Ala mixtures could be adjustable from 91.11 °C to 74.61 °C and thermal conductivity of the composite was improved to 10.93 W·m −1 ·K −1 , which is 21.9 times of pristine Alum-Ala mixture. The infrared thermography and temperature-time curves were obtained to represent the heat transfer performance and the subcooling degree intuitively. The subcooling degree was decreased from 2.238 K to 1.866 K. The result of TGA indicated that the composite possessed favorable thermal stability during the operating temperature. From the result, the composite obtained in the present work is a prospective candidate for exhaust heat recycles.

Solar-driven desalination has received tremendous attention due to its utilization of renewable solar energy, minimized carbon footprint, and simple installation. However, the traditional solar evaporator has the disadvantages of damaged light absorption and low heat transfer efficiency. In this work, a leaf-like photothermal evaporator (LPE) is designed by integrating the functions of light-to-heat conversion, water transport and evaporation, and vapor discharge. The photothermal layer is made of graphene oxide reduced by tannic acid, which shows a full–spectrum optical absorption as high as 94 % and achieves a strong combination with the water transport-evaporation layer thereby improving the heat conduction. Due to the chemical and mechanical bonding between tannic acid and cellulose, the temperature difference between the photothermal layer and the water transport-evaporation layer was reduced by 33 %. In addition, the water transport-evaporation layer adopts a Janus structure, which makes the water transport-evaporation layer thinner, thereby reducing the heat loss during the water transporting process, and provides a hydrophobic surface with good resistance of salt precipitation. By combing with an aluminum-made invert-structured condenser, a reversed solar-driven desalination (RSDD) system is proposed, whose water collecting rate is greatly improved to be 1.007 kg m −2 h −1 . A freshwater collection efficiency as high as 80 % is almost the highest value of a single-stage solar distiller. Besides, a single-stage solar distiller with four LPEs in parallel is made and applied in the outdoor desalination. This work proposes a design idea for a new type of solar distillation system, which will play a role in response to the water crisis.

As the power density of electronic devices continues to increase, traditional coolants (e.g., water and ethylene glycol) are unable to meet the demand for efficient heat dissipation. This study prepared graphene oxide (GO)/aminated iron (III) oxide (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 ) nanofluids (NFs, abbreviated as GF NFs) with different mass fractions, and systematically investigated their stability, thermophysical properties, and heat transfer enhancement (HTE) mechanism under magnetic field modulation. Experimental results show the following: The viscosity of NFs increases with rising particle concentration and decreases with increasing temperature; Conductivity increases with increasing concentration and temperature. For heat transfer performance, the convective heat transfer coefficient (h) of the NFs increased significantly with flow rate. Adding 0.05 mass% GF to the base fluid, the maximum HTE of GF NFs reached 120%. reducing the device temperature by 2.2 °C. Under a 1460 G magnetic field, the 0.1mass% GF NF reduced the device temperature by 2.6 °C compared to the base fluid. Combined with numerical simulations, this study reveals that the Brownian motion of nanoparticles (NPs) and magnetically induced micro-convection synergistically disrupt the thermal boundary layer, thereby enhancing the heat transfer performance of NFs. This study provides novel functionalized NF materials and regulation strategies for the intelligent thermal management of high-power electronic devices.
