Converting low-grade heat into electricity improves energy efficiency, reduces thermal pollution, and contributes to sustainability. However, the low thermal voltage, thermopower, or conversion efficiency of current monovalent-ion-based thermocells severely impede their application. Herein, we propose a new multivalent-ion-based calcium-ion thermal charging cell (CTCC) by introducing the concept of calcium-ion batteries into a thermoelectric system which demonstrates an ultrahigh thermopower of 25.2 mV K −1 through the synchronous thermo-extraction effect of oleic acid-treated Ca 0.24 V 2 O 5 ·H 2 O electrode and thermodiffusion effect of electrolyte. The appealing calcium-ion energy carrier, favorable aqueous Ca(CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 electrolyte, and facile oleic acid modification strategy can ensure potentially higher voltage, enable fast diffusion kinetics, and prevent vanadium species from dissolution. As a result, the CTCC achieves ultrahigh thermal voltage of 1.149 V and Carnot-relative efficiency of 24.42% (± 0.22%) at a temperature difference of 45 K. This work enriches the multivalent-ion-based thermocell classes for efficient heat-to-electricity conversion in sustainable energy utilization.

High-performance thermally chargeable supercapacitors (TCS) greatly depend on the design of electrode materials. The unique features of succulents of absorbing water for sustaining their lives during long severe droughts imply that there exist vast spaces inside these plants, which inspires us of fabricating biomass-based electrodes by means of such succulents to develop highly efficient TCS. The optimized porous carbon prepared from succulents presents a high specific surface area of up to 3188 m 2 g −1 , resulting in the superior capability of accommodating a vast amount of ions and promising thermal charging performance. The TCS with this carbon electrode can generate an open-circuit voltage of 565 mV under a temperature difference of 50°C with a temperature coefficient as high as 11.1 mV K −1 . This article provides a new method for the preparation of porous carbon from biomass for the TCS system.

Thermally chargeable supercapacitors (TCSCs) have offered exceptional energy-converting efficiency for absorbing human epidermal heat and generating and storing electrical energy, which then realize continuous power supply to electronic devices, such as sensors and wearable electronic products, in a wide range of practical significance. Here, we proposed a flexible TCSC by attaching binder-free Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@PPy electrodes on both ends of the H 3 PO 4 @P(AM-co-AA-co-AYP K + ) hydrogel electrolyte, which exhibits a large thermal power of 35.2 mV K −1 at 50% relative humidity and maximum figure of merit of 2.1. The high performances of the fabricated devices can be attributed to the tunable electrical, thermodynamic, thermoelectric, and mechanical properties of the hydrogel electrolyte by adjusting the acid content and the proportion of zwitterionic compound AYP K + in the hydrogel, and the high photothermal conversion efficiency and electrochemical performance of the electrodes. Moreover, the stable and outstanding thermofvoltage output (∼200 mV) under different time scenarios of the TCSC makes it possible to drive a strain sensor, accomplishing the objectives of a human activity monitor.

Flexible power supply devices provide possibilities for wearable electronics in the Internet of Things. However, unsatisfying capacity or lifetime of typical batteries or capacitors seriously limit their practical applications. Different from conventional heat-to-electricity generators, zinc ion thermal charging cells has been a competitive candidate for the self-power supply solution, but the lack of promising cathode materials has restricted the achievement of promising performances. Herein, we propose an attractive cathode material by rational heterostructure engineering of hydrated vanadium pentoxide. Owing to the integration of thermodiffusion and thermoextraction effects, the thermopower is significantly improved from 7.8 ± 2.6 mV K −1 to 23.4 ± 1.5 mV K −1 . Moreover, an impressive normalized power density of 1.9 mW m −2 K −2 is achieved in the quasi-solid-state cells. In addition, a wearable power supply constructed by three units can drive the commercial health monitoring system by harvesting body heat. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of electrodes design for wearable thermoelectric applications.

Thermally chargeable supercapacitors can collect low-grade heat generated by the human body and convert it into electricity as a power supply unit for wearable electronics. However, the low Seebeck coefficient and heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency hinder further application. In this paper, we designed a high-performance thermally chargeable supercapacitor device composed of ZnMn 2 O 4 @Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composites (ZMO@Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene) electrode and UIO-66 metal–organic framework doped multichannel polyvinylidene fluoridehexafluoro-propylene ionogel electrolyte, which realized the thermoelectric conversion and electrical energy storage at the same time. This thermally chargeable supercapacitor device exhibited a high Seebeck coefficient of 55.4 mV K −1 , thermal voltage of 243 mV, and outstanding heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency of up to 6.48% at the temperature difference of 4.4 K. In addition, this device showed excellent charge–discharge cycling stability at high-temperature differences (3 K) and low-temperature differences (1 K), respectively. Connecting two thermally chargeable supercapacitor units in series, the generated output voltage of 500 mV further confirmed the stability of devices. When a single device was worn on the arm, a thermal voltage of 208.3 mV was obtained indicating the possibility of application in wearable electronics.

The energy efficiency of batteries is generally compromised by internal resistance and polarization, which lead to considerable energy losses in widespread applications. Herein, we save the electrical energy and enhance energy efficiency by simultaneously charging Zn-ion batteries using waste heat and electricity. Using first-principles calculations and the modified Nernst equation, a high entropy Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) reaction was introduced into the anode of a NiHCF/Zn battery, leading to a record absolute temperature coefficient of 3.157 mV K−1 and a massive heat absorption during the charging process. Then the modified battery was charged at 45 °C and normally discharged at 5 °C, significantly saving 11.23% of electrical energy during charging and elevating the energy efficiency to 105.16%. Additionally, the NiHCF/Zn-LDH battery exhibits extraordinary stability, enduring over 1000 charge/discharge cycles with a capacity fade of less than 4.27%. This work demonstrates that large energy saving and surpassing 100% energy efficiency through heat charging are feasible, presenting a potential technology for enhancing energy conservation in battery applications.

Emerging ionic thermoelectric devices (i-TEs), with synergistic effect of thermogalvanic effect and thermo-diffusion effect, are promising devices to achieve heat to electricity. We report a zinc-iodine thermal charging cell (ZITCC) enabled by cost-efficient electrolytes for low-grade heat harvesting. Efficient functional electrolytes are obtained through optimization from Zn(NO 3 ) 2 , Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 and ZnSO 4 electrolytes and introducing redox species (I − /I 3 − ). The ZITCCs generate electricity through thermo-diffusion effect of electrolyte ions, as well as the thermogalvanic effect involving I − to I 3 − conversion and Zn plating, enabling efficient heat-to-electricity conversion. The Seebeck coefficient of 19.2 mV K −1 , a high output voltage of ∼1 V and superior normalized maximum power density of 0.44 mW m −2 K −2 is obtained at temperature difference of 15 K. Meanwhile, ZITCCs have good energy storage capacity. In addition, a quasi-solid-state device delivers an 8.5 mW m −2 output power and impressive performance at temperature difference of 8 K can be acquired. This work provides a good strategy for the design of high-Seebeck coefficient, cost-effective i-TEs for low-grade heat harvesting.
