Graphical In the heat of the light : Thermo-photocatalysis is a new catalysis approach based on the synergistic mechanism of photo- and thermocatalysis that can operate under the emission of a solar spectrum (see image). The reaction mechanisms, reaction conditions involved in various thermo-photocatalysis-based reactions for different environmental and energy applications that have better efficiencies and desired characteristics compared to individual catalytic systems are reported. Catalysis is an integral part of a majority of chemical operations focused on the generation of value-added chemicals or fuels. Similarly, the extensive use of fossil-derived fuels and chemicals has led to deterioration of the environment. Catalysis currently plays a key role in mitigating such effects. Thermal catalysis and photocatalysis are two well-known catalytic approaches that were applied in both energy and environmental fields. Thermo-photocatalysis can be understood as a synergistic effect of the two catalytic processes with key importance in the use of solar energy as thermal and light source. This Review provides an update on relevant contributions about thermo-photocatalytic systems for environmental and energy applications. The reported activity data are compared with the conventional photocatalytic approach and the base of the photothermal effect is analyzed. Some of the systems based on the positive aspects of thermo- and photocatalysis could be the answer to the energy and environmental crisis when taking into account the outstanding results with regard to chemical efficiency and energy saving.

A hollow polyhedral structure can effectively capture light and facilitate carrier separation, thus enhancing photocatalytic performance. Herein, hollow cubic CdS@CoS/WS2 dual S-scheme heterojunction superstructure photocatalysts are fabricated using a simple sulfidation and hydrothermal method. CdS@CoS/WS2 with a band gap of 1.59 eV and a relatively narrow band gap broadens the photoreaction to the near-infrared region and shows a good photothermal effect, which can promote photocatalytic reactions. It shows a relative specific surface area of 91.58 m2 g−1, which provides abundant surface-active sites to enhance the photocatalytic reaction. Under light conditions, the photocatalytic degradation ratios of CdS@CoS/WS2 for tetracycline and bisphenol A are up to 98.9 and 99.1%, and the hydrogen evolution efficiency is also up to 10.62 mmol h−1 g−1. The enhanced photothermal–photocatalytic performance could be due to the formation of a dual S-scheme heterojunction superstructure that facilitates space charge separation, a narrow band gap and a mesoporous hollow structure promoting solar light utilization, providing abundant surface-active sites and enhanced mass transfer. This simple strategy provides a new idea for the construction of high-performance hollow superstructure photocatalysts.

Solar evaporation is considered as a promising approach for harvesting freshwater from non-potable water utilizing sustainable solar energy. Integrating the photocatalytic effect into solar vapor generation is beneficial for the substantial augmentation of solar energy utilization for freshwater production and dealing with polluted water when it is used as source water. In this work, a synergistic photothermal–photochemical hybrid membrane is prepared by facilely dip-coating three-dimensional porous carbon nitride (CN) and a two-dimensional MXene on non-woven cotton cloth. The obtained hybrid membrane possesses high light absorption in the whole solar spectrum, a decreased band gap, excellent photothermal conversion accompanied by a reduced non-radiative reflection loss, and enlarged photocurrent by forming a Schottky junction between the MXene and CN under simulated solar light. With the combined merits above, the hybrid membrane shows excellent photocatalytic performance and solar steam generation. Typically, the hybrid membrane degrades 95% Rhodamine B, 92% crystal violet and 72% methyl orange at 3 mg L−1 under 1 kW m−2 irradiation within 60 min. The water evaporation rate is up to 2.30 kg m−2 h−1 with a solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency of 98.9% under one-sun irradiation. Significantly, a large-scale solar conversion device is constructed for outdoor experiments to simultaneously harvest freshwater from contaminated water and degrade organic dyes in source water. The daily freshwater production rate is 5.7 kg m−2, meeting the requirement of two adults. This work demonstrates the promising potential of the hybrid membrane for potable water production and contaminated water treatment within one device and opens an avenue for application in energy conversion and storage.

A hollow core–shell potassium phosphomolybdate (KMoP)@cadmium sulfide (CdS)@bismuth sulfide (Bi 2 S 3 ) Z-scheme tandem heterojunction is fabricated by a simple hydrothermal strategy and kept in a water bath to continue the reaction. At the same time, the ternary structure combined Keggin-type polyoxometalate with two photosensitive sulfide semiconductors to form a stable hollow core–shell heterojunction. KMoP@CdS@Bi 2 S 3 with a narrow band gap of ∼ 1.2 eV also has excellent photothermal performance, which may further promote photocatalytic efficiency. The hollow core–shell KMoP@CdS@Bi 2 S 3 tandem heterojunction shows excellent H 2 production performance, Cr VI reduction ability and photocatalytic degradation performance of highly toxic tetracycline (TC). Under visible light irradiation , the photocatalytic H 2 generation rate of the KMoP@CdS@Bi 2 S 3 tandem heterojunction reaches 831 μmol h −1 , which is 103 times higher than that of pristine KMoP. The photocatalytic reduction efficiency of Cr VI and degradation efficiency of TC are as high as 95.5 and 97.51%, ∼4 times higher than that of KMoP. The boosted photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the formation of core–shell Z-scheme tandem heterojunctions favoring spatial charge separation and the narrow band gap, which extends the photoresponse to visible light/NIR regions. When TC and Cr VI exist at the same time, the reduction efficiency of Cr VI can be as high as 99.64% because the intermediate of TC degradation can promote the reduction of Cr VI . In addition, the photocatalytic performance of the KMoP@CdS@Bi 2 S 3 heterojunction remains nearly constant after 4 recycles, which indicates high stability. The design strategy may provide new insights for preparing other high-performance core–shell tandem heterojunction photocatalysts for solar energy conversion .

Graphical BP/MoS 2 heterojunction is prepared by solvothermal method using NMP, BP nanosheets and (NH 4 ) 2 MoS 4 . Under NIR irradiation, BP/MoS 2 can be heated up to 51.8 °C within 5 minutes by photothermal conversion. In addition, the existence of ⋅O 2 − and 1 O 2 in BP/MoS 2 -NIR system is verified to sterilize efficiently. With a loading content of 10 wt % MoS 2 , bacterial cells, especially drug-resistant bacteria (10 6 cfu ⋅ mL −1 ) completely can lose the viability within 10 min of NIR irradiation. In this research, a high-efficiency nano-fungicide with synergistic effect was obtained by combining polycrystalline MoS 2 with layered nano-BP to form heterojunction, which had a new photothermal-photocatalytic antibacterial mechanism to Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative and drug-resistance bacteria under NIR. BP/MoS 2 whose lethality of bacteria could reach nearly 100 % at 400 μg/L, exhibited the highest photothermal lysis efficiency against E. coli, B. pumilus and A. baumannii. It was found that the heterojunction could be heated up to 51.8 °C within 5 minutes by photothermal conversion, and it also had an excellent performance of photothermal cycle. High temperature and stability of the material endowed it with an outstanding and long-lasting bactericidal effect. In addition, a series of in vitro free radical experiments was designed, the existence of ⋅O 2 − and 1 O 2 in BP/MoS 2 -NIR system was verified. And the Way of ROS production and the mechanism of action were discussed by EPR test. Subsequently, two mechanisms of synergistic antibacterial action were summarized, that is, abundant ROS and high temperature could destroy cell wall damage and lysis of bacteria effectively. This study provides a theoretical basis for the synergistic antibacterial action of NIR photothermal and photocatalysis of BP system.

Solar-driven catalytic synthesis of H 2 O 2 is an ideal alternative to the anthraquinone method, but current photocatalysts still suffer from low activity and inefficient solar energy utilization. Here we presented an economic and efficient solar interfacial catalysis system (SICS) that incorporated photothermal–photocatalytic materials into commercial sponge to simultaneously generate the required heat and carriers for H 2 O 2 production. We demonstrated its superiority over conventional particulate photocatalysis (PC) in photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. The SICS, located at the air–water interface, remarkably improves the activities of photocatalysts by efficient utilization of solar-converted heat. The produced H 2 O 2 from SICS was reserved in the sponge and resulted in an ultrahigh concentration of 46 mM for per gram catalyst after 1 h solar irradiation. As thus, our application experiments confirmed that the SICS presented great advantages in organic pollutant (e.g. phenol and tetracycline) degradation compared with conventional PC. This work paves a new way for the industrialization of solar-driven catalysis.

Addressing the global freshwater crisis demands advanced solutions where solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) shows promise, yet integrated photothermal-photocatalytic synergy within a single platform remains fundamentally challenging. An accordion-like Mo 2 AlB 2 MBene is pioneered and engineered into a crosslinked MBene/Polyvinylachohol (PVA)/meso-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) composite membrane (MPTM) that synergistically unifies solar harvesting and catalytic degradation. This architecture leverages accordion-like MBene nanosheets and interfacial porphyrin coordination to establish a dynamic hydrophilic network with exceptional broadband absorption (93.3% average, 200–2500 nm). Through Schottky junction formation and charge redistribution, the system achieves unprecedented solar evaporation rates (2.24 kg m − 2 h −1 under 1 sun) while concurrently generating reactive oxygen species (•OH/•O 2 − ) that degrade 98.7% organic pollutants (10 ppm rhodamine B) in 2 h. The MPTM sustains > 85% evaporation efficiency during long-term stability operation (Bohai seawater, 200 h) with < 4% efficiency decay, establishing a new paradigm for solar-powered water purification.

Integrating interfacial solar steam generation with photocatalytic degradation technology holds significant prospects for practical applications in simultaneous clean water collection and organic pollutant degradation. However, existing photothermal-photocatalytic bifunctional evaporators still suffer from performance deficiencies such as limited light absorption, insufficient evaporation rate and degradation efficiency, leading to the partial contaminant residual in complex wastewater. Herein, we propose a surface functionalization-bicrosslinking strategy to develop a novel photothermal-photocatalytic bifunctional hydrogel solar evaporator. The strategy involves surface functionalization of TiO 2 nanoparticles to form core-shell structured bifunctional TiO 2 @C nanoparticles by dopamine-modified thermal treatment, followed by composting with polyacrylamide/sodium alginate (PAM/SA) to achieve microporous double-network hydrogel. The resultant TiO 2 @C/PAM/SA hydrogel composites exhibit efficient sunlight absorption of up to 99.87 %, a remarkable evaporation rate of 2.97 kg m −2 h −1 with an outstanding photothermal efficiency of 92.13 %, as well as high photodegradation efficiency of 84.37 % under one sun irradiation. We further integrate such hydrogel composites into the fabrication of photothermal-photocatalytic bifunctional evaporators, which demonstrate efficient purification and photocatalytic efficacy in various water samples, including low-to-high concentrated brines and heavy metal ion/organic pollutant-containing wastewater. Such a strategy of designing high-performance photothermal-photocatalytic hydrogels opens new avenues to coherent solar desalination and organic pollutant degradation for complicated seawater/wastewater systems.

Multimetallic plasmonic nanostructures, with appropriate morphology, elemental proportions and sizes, can be used to accelerate photocatalytic reactions. Here, we designed zigzag trimetallic nanostructures with the Au core and Pd–Pt alloy shell, whose catalytic ability was boosted by the synergistic effect of the plasmonic metal and catalytic metal. The catalytic rate of Au@PdPt nanoparticle (NP) with no light have a significant improvement, attributed to the larger contact area provided by the zigzag alloy shell. Furthermore, the enhanced catalytic activity in the presence of light is primarily due to the thermo-photo catalytic effect of plasmonic Au. The adding ratios of Pd:Pt were adjusted from 1:4 to 4:1, and we found that, when adding the Pd:Pt of 1:1, the zigzag Au@PdPt nanoparticle (NP) exhibited a superior reaction rate in the reduction methylene blue (MB) under light illumination. The rate is 8 times higher than that of Au@Pt, and the reduction conversion reached 100%. And it has a favorable plasmon enhancement factor with an appropriate shell thickness and get the balance between the catalytic performance and economic effects. This structure driven by capability-oriented design principles and holds the potential for applications in the field of catalysis. Graphical abstract
