Thermal imprinting and vapor annealing of interfacial layers for high-performance organic light-emitting diodes

Mingguang Li,Jun Wang,Ying Zhang,Yizhong Dai,Lingfeng Chen,Chao Zheng,Wenzhen Lv,Runfeng Chen,Wei Huang

Control of interfacial layers is highly effective in tuning charge injection and transport processes in various organic optoelectronic architectures for high device performance. Herein, we developed a thermal imprinting and vapor annealing (TIVA) method to regulate the microstructures of the widely used poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonic acid (PEDOT:PSS) interfacial layer. The introduced ammonia vapor can reduce the acidity of the PSS units and facilitate the formation of continuous hole-transport channels. Meanwhile, the sub-micron patterns can be efficiently transferred from the flexible template to the PEDOT:PSS layer via thermal imprinting (TI) treatment. Interestingly, the synergistic effects on the PEDOT:PSS hole-injection layer (HIL) result in a current efficiency (CE) of 36.62 cd A−1, power efficiency (PE) of 27.60 lm W−1 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 18.80% with a more than 35% efficiency enhancement for the blue phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). This novel TIVA method applied to the regulation of a PEDOT:PSS HIL benefits the performance of PhOLEDs in two ways: (1) to regulate the microstructures of PEDOT:PSS and construct continuous hole-transport channels in the intrinsic PEDOT:PSS layer, and (2) to enlarge the interfacial contact and thus create more hole-transport paths from HIL to hole-transporting layer. These findings will provide a new platform for the rational regulation of HILs with efficient and rich charge-transport channels and thus further advance the realization of high-performance OLEDs.

Improved Performance of All-Inorganic Perovskite Light-emitting Diodes via Nanostructured Stamp Imprinting

Hai-Jing Zhang,Yue-Feng Liu,Xin Zheng,Jing Feng

Graphical A thermal imprinting strategy using nanostructured stamps is utilized to selectively manipulate the nucleation and growth in nanoscale to produce small-sized grain with improved crystal quality and surface morphology of the film. The luminance and efficiency of perovskite light-emitting diodes are increased by 123 % and 100 % respectively, compared to the ones without imprinting. Halide perovskites are emerging emitters with excellent optoelectronic properties. Contrary to the large grain fabrication goal in perovskite solar cells, perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) based on small grain enable efficient radiative recombination because of relatively higher charge carrier densities due to spatial confinement. However, achieving small-sized grain growth with superior crystal quality and film morphology remains a challenge. In this work, we demonstrated a nanostructured stamp thermal imprinting strategy to boost the surface coverage and improve the crystalline quality of CsPbBr 3 film, particularly confine the grain size, leading to the improvement of luminance and efficiency of PeLEDs. We improved the thermal imprinting process utilizing the nanostructured stamp to selectively manipulate the nucleation and growth in the nanoscale region and acquire small-sized grain accompanied by improved crystal quality and surface morphology of the film. By optimizing the imprinting pressure and the period of the nanostructures, appropriate grain size, high surface coverage, small surface roughness and improved crystallization could be achieved synchronously. Finally, the maximum luminance and efficiency of PeLEDs achieved by nanostructured stamp imprinting with a period of 320 nm are 67600 cd/m 2 and 16.36 cd/A, respectively. This corresponds to improvements of 123 % in luminance and 100 % in efficiency, compared to that of PeLEDs without the imprinting.

Flexible N-Doped Graphene Electrodes Fabricated via Rapid Direct Hot Stamping for Microsupercapacitors

Jinghong Chen,Wei Yuan,Yaopeng Wu,Xiaoqing Zhang,Simin Jiang,Bote Zhao,Yu Chen,Chenghao Yang,Liangxin Ding,Yong Tang,Xinrui Ding

Motivated by the advancements in portable and wearable electronics, the rising necessity for microscale energy storage electronics has prompted extensive research on the efficient and cost-effective preparation of high-performance electrode materials. Herein, a facile fabrication method of N-doped graphene-based electrodes is demonstrated for in-plane microsupercapacitors (MSCs) on flexible textile. Our approach involves a one-step direct hot stamping of 10 s for efficient reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and simultaneously N doping into reduced GO (N-rGO). The degree of N doping is controlled by varying the concentrations of precursor chitosan (CS) in GO. Benefiting from the enhanced N doping, the N-rGO 15% electrodes prepared with a CS-to-GO mass ratio of 0.15 exhibit excellent volumetric capacitance of 42.2 F cm–3, exceptional energy density of 3.01 mWh cm–3, and a maximum power density of 31.57 mW cm–3, along with the outstanding mechanical flexibility and cycle stability. Besides, serial integration of the MSCs interwoven on short sleeves was also performed to light a customized LED, suggesting its potential as a power source in wearable devices. Therefore, the proposed hot stamping strategy offers insights for the development of an integrated and multifunctional textile.

Water-repellent hierarchical microstructured PTFE films via micro powder hot embossing

Jie Gao,Yujun Deng,Linfa Peng,Peiyun Yi,Zhongqin Lin

The preparation of hierarchical microstructured surfaces to obtain different wettability has been studied in both academy and industry. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an ideal material for preparing superhydrophobic surface due to its ultra-low surface energy. However, it is still a challenge to prepare hierarchical structure on the surface of PTFE. In this paper, PTFE films with hierarchical structure were successfully prepared by micro powder hot embossing (mPHE) process. Through characterization, the maximum contact angle and minimum sliding angle can reach up to 164° and 5.3° respectively. The influence of processing parameters and particle size on forming qualities was discussed. A dimensionless indicator was proposed to successfully describe the hierarchical character and characterize the relationship between wetting states and forming quality. Finally, a series of mechanical and chemical durability tests were carried out, verifying the practical application value of the prepared PTFE films.

Photonic-Crystal-Printed Fabrics with Wash Resistance Properties for Color Stability Based on Hot Press Printing of ZnS Nanoparticles

Chen Pan,Aqing Tian,Mingxiong Wu,Qingwen Shi,Haiying Tan,Danyi Shao,Jiuxiao Sun,Fengfeng Zhou,Dongsheng Liu

Photonic crystals (PCs), which are micro nanostructured materials periodically arranged from media with different refractive indices, have attracted great interest in textile coloring over the past decades. However, the washing resistance of PC-based fabrics cannot meet the requirements of daily washing, which limits the application of PCs in coloring. Therefore, it is particularly important to further improve the washing resistance of PC-based fabrics. Herein, high-refractive index zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanoparticles were spray-coated on polyethylene films with patterns to construct PC-based fabrics by hot press printing. The excellent toughness of polyethylene was utilized to improve the washing resistance of fabrics. The influence of the hot press process, the color control method of PCs, and the washing and friction resistance of fabrics were systematically studied. Generally, the wash resistance of the obtained fabric did not fade after 24 times of laundered washing. The results of this work will benefit the application of PCs in textile coloring, sensors, and so on.

Improving performance of AgNPs/PDA/TPU electrospun composite film based flexible pressure sensor by hot imprinted microstructure array

Chaoying Wang,Chuangao Ma,Zhuping Han,Mengnan Li,Shaoning Lu,Peibang Dai

Highly sensitive sensors have attracted considerable attention in areas such as electronic skin, health monitoring and artificial intelligence. Herein, a simple and efficient approach was proposed to fabricate hierarchically structured flexible sensors. A common metal mesh was used as a template and its pattern was transferred to the surface of a composite film of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) decorated polydopamine (PDA) and polyurethane (TPU) electrospun fibers by hot imprinting. The resulting film with a uniform convex microstructure array on the surface was used as the conductive sensing layer of the AgNPs/PDA/TPU sensor. The sensor exhibited a linear detection range increased from 15 kPa to 20 kPa compared to the control sensor without the microstructure. Furthermore, the sensitivity was improved from 8.13 kPa −1 to 10.44 kPa −1 . The response time and recovery time of the sensor were determined to be 110 ms and 90 ms, respectively, and it maintained good stability at 10 kPa even after 1000 compression cycles. In addition, the sensor enabled real-time pressure signal detection for touch, joint movement and voice recognition, showing promising applications in health monitoring, pressure detection and human-machine interaction.

Convex micropatterned arrays in fused silica glass surface from the uniaxial thermal imprinting of thermoplastic nanocomposites

Qinglong Zhang,Youwang Hu,Haikuan Chen,Ji’an Duan,Xiaoyan Sun

The sintering of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) for fused silica glass structural components has garnered significant interest due to its cost-effective and scalable production, as well as potential applications in optics, resonators, and microfluidics. Fabricating thermoplastic nanocomposites (NCs) by combining SiNPs with an organic polymer binder for thermal imprinting using a hard mold, followed by debinding and sintering, represents a promising approach. However, the mechanisms of high-quality cavity filling and the influence of polymer binders on sintering quality remain poorly understood. Here, an improved uniaxial thermal-imprinting technology was developed, utilizing thermoplastic NCs combined with dimethyl silicone oil and hydrophobic SiNPs as mold lubricants. The effects of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) binder's molecular weight and content on sintering performance were systematically investigated. Optimizing these parameters significantly enhanced fused silica glass convex microstructures, achieving a surface roughness Sa = 48.2 nm, visible light transmittance exceeding 90 %, and an aspect ratio of 0.84. This study provides a practical framework for fabricating micropatterned fused silica glass parts with complex shapes, offering potential applications in optics, resonators, microfluidic chips, and beyond.

Improving Perovskite Solar Cell Performance and Stability via Thermal Imprinting-Assisted Ion Exchange Passivation

Shuwen Qi,Chenghao Ge,Peng Wang,Bin Wu,Yuping Zhao,Rongjun Zhao,Shafidah Shafian,Yong Hua,Lin Xie

The latest development in perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology has been significantly influenced by advanced techniques aimed at passivating surface defects. This work presents a new approach called thermal imprinting-assisted ion exchange passivation (TIAIEP), which delivers a different approach to conventional solution-based methods. TIAIEP focuses on addressing surface imperfections in solid-state films by using a passivator that promotes ion exchange specifically at the defect sites within the perovskite layer. By adjusting the time and temperature of the TIAIEP process, we achieve substantial enhancement in the creation of a compositional gradient within the films. This optimization slows the cooling rate of hot carriers, leading to minimizing charge recombination and improving the device performance. Remarkably, devices treated with TIAIEP achieve a 22.29% power conversion efficiency and show outstanding stability, with unencapsulated PSCs maintaining 91% of their original efficiency after over 2000 h of storage and 90% efficiency after 1200 h of constant illumination. These results highlight TIAIEP’s effectiveness in mitigating surface defects, improving both the photoelectric and stability performance of PSCs, and indicating significant potential for large-scale application in perovskite film passivation, promoting the widespread adoption of this technology.
